Film review: evil nanny (2016).

Michelle Swope 08/08/2017 Uncategorized

evil nanny movie review

A couple hires a live-in nanny to watch their son while they work.  At first, everything goes perfectly, but when an unsafe incident means the parents no longer want the nanny around, they find out this nanny is savvy at not being evicted from her live-in situation.

Born in New York , Evil Nanny’s director Jared Cohn is an avid writer and director. Jared graduated NYIT with a B.F.A in communication arts.  Jared works in production and continues to hone his craft as an actor and filmmaker.

I’ve seen a couple of films with similar plotlines, but Evil Nanny is a bit over the top as far as showing just how far Jen ( Lindsay Elston ) will go to get what she wants. The film claims to be based on true events and doesn’t waste any time letting us know that Jen is bad news. She is kicked out of a home for wayward girls, and immediately burns it to the ground.  She has a secret which led to her being asked to leave the girls’ home.  Jen plans to try and get a job as a nanny, despite her questionable, hidden past.

Fay ( Nicole Sterling ) and Tim ( Matthew Pohlkamp ) are married and have a son. They have been struggling to juggle parenthood with their busy work schedules. They have just moved into Fay’s grandmother’s house and are in the process of interviewing potential nannies when they meet Jen and decide to hire her to be a live-in nanny to manage things around the house and also care for their young son Allan ( Cooper Fontaine ). Although this is a low budget film, the acting from Lindsay Elston as Jen is notable. The editing and cinematography are also pretty well done in this film.

evil nanny movie review

Jen seems bubbly and outgoing and immediately gets along well with Allan. Fay’s grandmother had a large house and they give Jen a private bedroom and bathroom in the lower section of the house. When Jen goes grocery shopping with Fay a girl who is a cashier recognizes her and calls her Alexa.  Jen pretends she doesn’t know the girl and tells her she has the wrong person until Fay isn’t around and then Jen threatens the girl if she says anything.  Obviously the girl knows Jen from her past life and also knows Jen’s diabolical secret.  Lindsay Elston is very believable portraying Jen as a dangerous girl trying to hide her dark past by switching between personalities. One minute she’s friendly and wholesome and the next minute she’s acting like a crazed serial killer.

evil nanny movie review

I found it odd that Fay and Tim don’t really seem very concerned about their son. They are distracted by work obligations, and this gives Jen free rein over the household.  Personally, I’d be at least a little concerned about a stranger making themselves so at home in my own house.  Jen begins having wild parties in her part of the house and when Fay and Tim discover this, they try to fire Jen and ask her to leave. The police are called and they tell the couple that they have to give Jen 30 days to vacate the house. A legal battle ensues and this is when things get really out of control and Jen’s behavior becomes more and more outrageous. She starts dating a drug dealer and drinking heavily. Fay and Tim finally get a judge to grant them an eviction to get rid of Jen, but she has found a loophole and stops the proceedings and is allowed to stay in the house.

By this point, I felt that the story was getting ridiculous. Fay goes grocery shopping and sees the cashier that knows Jen and notices she has the same tattoo as Jen. The cashier doesn’t want to answer any of Fay’s questions, but tells her that if she talks to her Jen/Alexa will kill her. Nicole Sterling wasn’t very convincing as a distraught Fay, which I found disappointing. She was just no match for the murderous Jen.

evil nanny movie review

I thought that this movie had potential as a thriller, but overall the story fell flat and other than Lindsay Elston, a lot of the acting just wasn’t believable.

Is Evil Nanny a True Story?

of Is Evil Nanny a True Story?

Lifetime is known for bringing its viewers the edge-of-the-seat thrillers, and ‘Evil Nanny’ is a fine addition to its already sumptuous catalog of thrillers.

What is the Evil Nanny About?

For those who are not already aware of this Lifetime movie, ‘Evil Nanny’ follows the Tripp family, whose lives are suddenly upended by the arrival of a nightmarish nanny. When Fay Tripp has to go back to work, she and her husband appoint a live-in nanny, Jen, to look after the family in their absence. However, this routine appointment soon becomes a nightmare for the family. When Jen starts to neglect her duties, the Tripp family decides to fire her (with good reason), but thanks to her prolonged stay with the family, Jen acquires the status of a resident at the Tripp home, marking the beginning of the nightmare. With legal eviction, the only way to get Jen out of the house, the Tripp family gets caught in a long-drawn game, and before long, Jen assumes control of the household, forcing Fay’s hand to come up with a desperate plan to get rid of Jen.

Is Evil Nanny Based on a True Story?

evil nanny movie review

Around 2014, several news reports emerged about a 64-year-old woman, Diane Stretton, who worked as a live-in nanny. While sexagenarians are usually considered to be sweet and harmless, Stretton allegedly terrorized the family that hired her before she was forced to leave the residence.

Hired by California couple Ralph and Marcella Bracamonte, Stretton was appointed to look after the couple’s family in their absence. Instead, the couple alleged that Stretton neglected her duties and refused to leave when they wanted to fire her. Reportedly, the situation spiraled out of control after that, and Stretton started threatening the family with legal action for minor things like no switching on the air conditioner. Other reports state that Stretton also called the cops on the family once because she deemed their television to be too loud. Further, CNN also reported that Stretton would often pressurize the Bracamontes to leave their own house for hours at a stretch so that she could enjoy her privacy. Thankfully, however, the Bracamontes eventually managed to get Stretton to leave, thus ending their nightmare.

Understandably, when the story broke in 2014, it left many parents in shock, and unsurprisingly, Stretton was given several monikers, such as “nightmare nanny,” “squatter nanny,” and “nanny from hell.”

Admittedly though, the events shown in ‘Evil Nanny’ are far more sinister than Stretton’s petty means of terrorization, and there’s no official acknowledgment in the movie that says that it is based on a true story. That being said, such stories about evil nannies are far and few between, and given the fact that ‘Evil Nanny’ was released in 2016, just a couple of years after the Stretton incident, it would make sense for the filmmakers to take inspiration from the real-life nightmare that the Bracamontes had to endure.

Evil Nanny – Movie Review

by A. Renee Hunt | Apr 3, 2017 | Movie Reviews , Reviews | 0 comments

Evil Nanny Directed by Jared Cohn Written by Naomi Selfman Produced by Dylan Vox Starring Lindsay Elston, Nicole Sterling, and Matthew Pohlkamp December 27, 2016 Reviewed by A. Renee Hunt

From what I understand, Evil Nanny is taken from true events. I tried to look up a case similar to this movie, but couldn’t find one. With that, I’m only to assume it set precedent to anything from ever happening, like this again. I hope so, because this movie was insane!

Evil Nanny tells the story of a couple with two children, trying to get settled into their inherited home. Fay, the wife, is trying to get back to work after maternity leave, while husband Tim is working on a special project that keeps him away from home. With that, they decide to hire a nanny for their children. In steps Jen, the seemingly perfect young lady the job. But they learn within days, the girl has issues, and now, they do too.

From excessive drinking to neglecting the children, they immediately regret hiring the live-in. But when they decide to fire her, they realize they’re stuck with a person who’s out to ruin their entire lives. Nothing they do or say seems to help them, and living in a state where certain details are more pro-tenant than landlord, their nightmares plummet to deeper, darker depths. They can’t get rid of the girl.

Now because I’ve never imagined having a stranger in my home, this movie set me in a vicious mood. The movie did what it set out to do, show me I’ll never have this in my life! Also, know your laws, because Jen did. She knew exactly what to do to start a row with her tenants and knew the right people to get her exactly what she wanted. It was unbelievable. It was good, like something from the Lifetime Network.

Evil Nanny released in December of 2016.

Evil nanny (2016) will take good care of you.

Billie Wood March 29, 2017 Reviews Comments Off on Evil Nanny (2016) Will Take Good Care Of You

Directed by camp veteran Jared Cohn and written by Naomi Selfman, Evil Nanny is a prolonged home invasion movie with enough invention and cleverness to surprise even a horror veteran like me. The plot follows the titular Evil Nanny, played with Joan-Crawford-in- Mommy – Dearest levels of zeal by Lindsay Elston, as she goes to work for a couple, Fay and Tim (Nicole Sterling, Matthew Pohlkamp), to look after their two children.

evil nanny movie review

To cover their minimal resources, the couple offers Evil Nanny free room and board. This doesn’t sound like a crucial detail, but trust me. Once the nanny moves in and begins living up to the title, you expect verbal abuse toward the children and you expect violence, but this film gives you none of it. For a while.

Naomi Selfman’s script is strangely scarier in its understanding that what truly ruins lives and frightens isn’t a creature from the black lagoon, it’s a person who won’t leave your house and knows they don’t have to. This is not a chainsaw, wire hanger, kitchen knife movie for the most part. It’s an eviction notice, restraining order, raucous metal music at 3 A.M. to keep everybody awake movie. It’s The Strangers (2008) by way of You, Me, and Dupree (2006) by way of the Lifetime Channel.

Most interestingly, you’d think a horror movie about a childcare specialist would play on a parent’s fear that anything could happen to the children, but the children are strangely on Evil Nanny’s side. This is somehow more horrifying when you think about it. Evil Nanny isn’t out to steal or slay your children. Evil Nanny is out to turn them against you.

evil nanny movie review

When the couple try to evict Evil Nanny the first time, Alan (Cooper Fontaine in a surprisingly not-that-irritating performance from a child) yells at the parents for being mean to “Jen-Jen,” his nickname for Evil Nanny (who goes by many names, Jennifer being one of them. I will continue to use Evil Nanny for clarity and, well, when you have a phrase like “Evil Nanny” at your disposal, using anything else is like leaving a shotgun on the shelf, picking up a kazoo, and wandering into the zombie apocalypse).

I brought up Pacific Heights at the beginning because Evil Nanny uses the same set of tools to inflict its torture. It becomes a movie about tenants’ rights, about legality, and about the thin line between politeness and the end of human capacity to endure. While not Michael Keaton, Lindsay Elston plays the same kind of monster in the film. The cold open to Evil Nanny features a massive fire and a banging soundtrack, but the Evil Nanny we see in the next scene is older, smarter, and better equipped. She realizes, way ahead of us, that fire is for amateurs and she’s ready to go pro.

Cohn’s directing gives the film fairly pleasant rhythm as well as a consistent balance of believability and TV-movie excess from the actors. Fay and Tim are a believably in-love couple, and they are clearly being put through the ringer we the audience might not understand but can certainly feel in Nicole Sterling’s voice as it grows increasingly frantic with each scene.

Movie Synopsis Of Evil Nanny On Lifetime

Fay is preparing to return to work after being a stay at home wife and mother. Before she heads back into the working world, Fay needs to hire a full-time nanny to care for her baby while she is away. Fay’s husband Tim is on board with the plan to hire someone to help out. But finding the right person won’t be an easy task. Determined to find the perfect nanny, Fay finally settles on Jen, a highly qualified nanny who seems to have just the right skills to fulfill all of their needs.

Excited that she has finally found someone who meets her expectations, Fay is baffled when all hell breaks loose in her home after the so-called highly skilled nanny almost kills the baby due to her negligence. What is more, Jen is shirking her responsibilities and engaging in risky behavior. From partying and acting inappropriately to drinking and disrespecting the home, Jen has clearly overstepped her bounds, and Fay and Tim are ready to send this crazy nanny packing.

But just when they fire her and send her on her merry way, Jen shows them who has the upper hand when she refuses to leave the home, where she is considered a legal resident. You see, Jen knows and understands tenant laws like the back of her hand, so she has no plans to move out of her new wonderful abode.

Now this nightmare nanny has total control of her bosses turned co-tenants as she plays out her role as the nightmare nanny everyone dreads. Stubborn and resistant, Jen taunts and toys with Fay and Tim until they are at their wit’s end? Who will survive? Will Fay’s family get out of this situation alive or will this evil nanny take everyone down with her.

Here Is One True Evil Nanny Story

According to The Best Darn Girls Movie Review, Evil Nanny is based on a true story or true events. In researching the movie, the following story caught our eye. It’s the story of Diane Stretton, a 64-year-old woman who allegedly terrorized a family after she refused to move out after she was fired, according to The Blaze.

Good riddance! 'Nightmare nanny' Diane Stretton no longer living inside ex-employers' home http://t.co/57aRo28PI1 — News This Second (@NewsThisSecond) August 2, 2014

Stretton was hired by Ralph and Marcella Bracamonte, a California couple who hired her to be a nanny in their home. Instead, they say she stopped working and refused to get out after they told her to leave.

From there, the situation became a real-life nightmare after the nanny allegedly began threatening to sue the family if they didn’t turn on the air conditioner. The unwanted tenant also called the police to report that the Bracamontes’ television was too loud. According to CNN , Stretton even wanted the Bracamontes to leave their own home for several hours at a time so that she could have more privacy.

When the shocking story broke in 2014, Diane Stretton was dubbed the “nightmare nanny,” “squatter nanny,” and “nanny from hell.”

One of the most infamous nanny movies is the 1992 movie The Hand That Rocks The Cradle , starring Annabella Sciorra and Rebecca De Mornay. In 2013, Lifetime debuted a similar movie titled The Nightmare Nanny.

According to the New York Times , Lifetime’s Evil Nanny premieres this Saturday at 8 p.m. Last week, the movie Mommy, I Didn’t Do It aired on the Lifetime Channel.

Evil Nanny – Movie Review

Evil Nanny Directed by Jared Cohn Written by Naomi Selfman Produced by Dylan Vox Starring Lindsay Elston, Nicole Sterling, and Matthew Pohlkamp December 27, 2016 Reviewed by Megan Purcell

Evil Nanny has a great concept. Based on a case where a live-in nanny used strict tenant laws to keep a family from firing her, it stars Lindsay Elston as Jenn/Alexa, the nanny who makes it impossible for parents Tim and Fay to get rid of her through legal means. After a very rough start depicting Alexa’s teen years in a foster home, the movie is actually pretty engrossing for an hour or so, until things devolve into an overwrought mess.

Unfortunately the evil nanny herself is the weak link in Evil Nanny . Alexa’s main intimidation tactic is smirking like a teenaged brat, and when she waves a knife around, the first impulse in the viewer is to laugh. She’s not believable when she’s bullying her friend, she’s not believable when she’s seducing the neighbor boy, and she’s definitely not believable when she’s menacing the kids. The movie only works when she’s offscreen. And the character motivation for the ending is non-existent, as though it were shot in a vacuum with no context from the rest of the film.

The fun in a Lifetime movie like this is in its campiness, but this is just embarrassing. If this movie hadn’t been filled with black thug stereotypes and the evil nanny had been the slightest bit believable or interesting, and the ending had made a lick of sense, it could have been a fun throwback TV movie of the week. As it is, it doesn’t even rate being called a thriller movie. Z-grade teen drama, maybe.

Perils of Women Wanting Careers

The Asylum made the most grindhouse Lifetime movie imaginable. It starts off with arson, goes to psycho nanny goes to court ends in a shotgun blasting treehouse stand off. It is a totally absurd movie but it is fun despite itself. Everything is clumsy and over the top but that is what makes it fun. You really don’t know what kind of nonsense is coming next but you know it is going to be really silly. Super over the top acting from our two female leads they absolutely rip and tear at their roles with gusto. I love the inciting incident that gets all this going is a passive aggressive comment about furniture placement. Not…

‘Evil Nanny’ preaches to a nonexistent choir

‘Evil Nanny’ preaches to a nonexistent choir

Having an agenda is not the same thing as delivering a worthwhile message, nor is having a message one thinks worthwhile the same thing as having a valuable piece of entertainment. Evil Nanny , despite what the bluntness of such a title would have you believe, is not an exploitative story of a nanny prone to violence, but is instead a protracted tale of one woman’s exploitation of landlord-tenant law, which is just about as exciting as it sounds. And even if you accept Evil Nanny as a message movie, it’s a message about a virtually non-existent issue.

The film opens on Jen ( Lindsay Elston ) setting fire to her foster home after being kicked out for some unknown offense. Cut to an indeterminate amount to time in the future, and Jen is casually reinventing herself to apply for a nanny position with a family whose matriarch is just starting a new job and needs someone around to care for the kids. After leading the couple, Fay and Tim ( Nicole Sterling and Matthew Pohlkamp , respectively), to believe that she has extensive experience caring for children, the family allows her into their home, offering a room and utilities in exchange for her services. When Fay comes home to discover Jen allowing the children to get into dangerous situations, she fires the nanny and demands she leave the premises at once. However, Jen starts abusing the tenancy laws of the state in order to maintain her residence, terrorizing the family with noise and scandal until they will pay her off.

So, in actuality, the so-called “evil” nanny is much less evil than she is manipulative and obnoxious, earlier arson notwithstanding. Despite some decent performances from all the key players, the screenplay places a false equivalency between the casual cruelty of a bad roommate and actually harmful crime such as assault and murder. Jen’s actions do eventually escalate to filing restraining orders on fallacious grounds and then (gasp!) actual violence, but only once the film finally decides to become a thriller rather than a warning on the perils of being a landlord.

Screenwriter Naomi L. Selfman must have had some sort of personal experience that needs working out of her system, because with as passionately as this screenplay advocates against tenants’ rights, the details of Jen’s manipulation of the legal system are awfully specific. The family’s attorney claims to have “seen this all before,” an attestation that this could happen to anyone who has a spare bedroom they’ve lent out. Given my own experience in the legal field, I don’t buy it, especially considering how cartoonishly calculating and foreknowing Jen’s manipulations turn out to be. Could this happen? Sure. But the odds of it are much less likely than the film wants you to believe, and the screenplay is riddled with so many contrivances that it desperately wants you to ignore as it tries to push its false reality all the harder.

But leaving the film’s self-professed realism aside, there just isn’t much here to make the film engaging or tense. Sure, Jen is a sociopathic horror that I would never wish to have as a tenant in my home, but her manipulation of her landlords is neither titillating nor fun, which begs the question of why I’m even watching a film called Evil Nanny . Despite how game the cast clearly is for this substandard material, the evil of this nanny is relatively benign.

Horror is a beloved genre that exceeds all limits and all expectations. And women have been the backbone of the genre since it began, whether through being the final girls we root for or the monsters that scare us. Unfortunately, historically, women in the genre have been portrayed as either eye candy or damsels in distress. However, recently this has changed, and we have seen women take the role of villains as well as brave, strong female leads .

But what happens when women are the ones behind the camera? What stories do they tell? Who are their lead characters? In recent years, there has been an increase in female directors in horror movies. These are some of the best debut horror movies by female directors.

10 'Censor' (2021)

Directed by prano bailey-bond.

Enid (Niamh Algar) In Censor 2021

Censor follows the story of Enid (portrayed by Niamh Algar ) who works as a horror movie censor during Britain's "video nasties craze." During the video nasties phenomenon in the 1980s, British politicians, press, and public believed that watching gory horror movies led to violent crimes. In Censor , Enid believes that her work in censoring horror movies and removing any explicit violent scenes is the only thing preventing violent crime from running rampant in society. However, everything changes after a man murders his family and the press blame it on a movie Enid has censored. Enid's down spiral is further exacerbated when she is assigned to censor a movie featuring a lead actress who looks like a grown up version of her sister, who was lost in the woods during Enid's childhood.

Director Prano Bailey-Bond makes two main points with Censor . The first point is how censorship does more harm than good, and blaming people's violent actions on movies rids them of all responsibility. The second point focuses on the impact of censorship on people. Enid censors herself and her thoughts over and over throughout the movie. At first, she doesn't remember how her sister went missing, despite the fact she was with her when it happened. Even after she believes that the actress is her sister and goes on a journey to find her, she continues to censor herself even further.

9 'Hatching' (2022)

Directed by hanna bergholm.

hatching-trailer-social-featured

In the Finnish body horror and creature feature movie Hatching , we are first introduced to the camera-perfect family of 12-year-old Tinja (portrayed by Siiri Solalinna ). Tinja is forced to be a gymnast by her influencer mother (portrayed by Sophia Heikkilä ), whom Tinja is desperate to please. One day, Tinja finds an egg in the woods and decides to incubate it. During the same time, a new neighbor, Reetta, moves in, and she joins Tinja's gymnastics team. Reeta proves to be a really talented gymnast, which frustrates Tinja's mother, who pushes her daughter to train harder and harder. At the same time, the egg hatches and a creature emerges.

Tinja calls the creature Alli and throughout the movie Alli's appearance is ever-changing. The movie gives a strong analysis of the divided self between the gentle, rule-abiding Tinja and the feral Alli, who represents Tinja's pent-up frustrations. The divided self concept is not new in cinema or horror movies, it is simply a division between the good and bad. In Hatching , Tinja represents a good, disciplined girl, while Alli represents a more animalistic version of her. Alli also acts as a testament to Tinja's mother's negligence towards her young daughter, and the impossible expectations she has for Tinja.

8 'Relic' (2020)

Directed by natalie erika james.

relic 2020 Horror Movie

On the surface, Relic appears to be just another haunted house horror . The movie starts with Edna (portrayed by Robyn Nevin ) going missing and her daughter Kay (portrayed by Emily Mortimer ), and her granddaughter, Sam (portrayed by Bella Heathcote ) traveling to find her. When Edna comes back, she is naked and covered in mud. Kay and Sam enter the house to find a mysterious mold growing on the walls. Throughout their stay, they hear creaking sounds and whispers which convince them that there is an evil spirit lurking in the shadows.

Director Natalie Erika James has previously stated that the movie was inspired by her experience dealing with her grandmother’s journey with Alzheimer’s. James uses the elements of a classic haunting house horror movie as a medium to show the struggles of people going through Alzheimer's and dementia, as well as the struggles of their loved ones. James perfectly captures the fear of morality and how humans have no power to prevent the loss of their loved ones.

7 'Nanny' (2022)

Directed by nikyatu jusu.

Anna Diop in Nanny

Nanny tells the story of Aisha (played by Anna Diop), a Senegalese immigrant who works as a nanny for a wealthy white family in New York City. Aisha looks after the family's young daughter, Rose, and they quickly grow closer, as Aisha often stays over when her parents don't come home for the night. The family often neglects to pay Aisha for her work, which in turn impedes her ability to bring her son, Lamine, and her cousin, Mariatou, to the United States. Aisha starts to be haunted by visions, especially visions of drowning and flooding.

Nanny tells the story of the exploitation of immigrant workers, as the parents often left Aisha to work way too much and without much reward. It also tells the story of maternal guilt . Aisha spends all of her time thousands of miles away from her son, taking care of another family's daughter. No matter how much Aisha tries, she cannot bring her son to the United States. In Nanny, the lie of the American Dream falls apart in front of Aisha's eyes.

5 'The Babadook' (2014)

Directed by jennifer kent.

Essie Davis in 'The Babadook'

The Babadook revolves around Amelia Vanek (portrayed by Essie Davis ) and her son, Samuel (portrayed by Noah Wiseman ) in the aftermath of her husband's death in an accident. Samuel starts to display erratic behavior after he starts believing there is a monster in their home. Amelia ignores her son's claims at first, but when she starts to be haunted by the same monster, the Babadook, she grows scared and impatient with her son. The Babadook is a very scary creature that scared William Friedkin , the director of The Exorcist .

The Babadook monster symbolizes Amelia and Samuel's grief and trauma over the death of the family's patriarch. One sentiment is echoed multiple times throughout the movie, which is that you cannot get rid of the Babadook, exactly how you cannot get rid of grief. Amelia tries to ignore her grief over and over, but the longer she ignores it, the worse things become. Unlike most monsters and demons, the Babadook grows stronger when it is ignored and neglected .

4 'Huesera: The Bone Woman' (2023)

Directed by michelle garza cervera.

Huesera: The Bone Woman Natalia Solián

Huesera: The Bone Woman follows Valeria (portrayed by Natalia Solián) from discovering she is pregnant to the very early days of motherhood. Throughout her pregnancy, Valeria becomes more isolated and in need of help for her complex feelings about motherhood and pregnancy . As her isolation and desperation grows, she sees the Bone Woman getting closer and closer. The Bone Woman is a creature with broken bones and limbs turned at unnatural angles, who hunts Valeria and even hurts her loved ones at times.

Huesera: The Bone Woman is a modern take on the Mexican folklore legend of La Huesera, who collected bones of wolves and sang to them to bring them back to life. Once a wolf was brought back to life by La Huesera, it turns into a woman. In modern fiction, Le Huesera is often utilized as an allegory, bringing justice to women. Huesera: The Bone Woman tackles the enormous pressure put on women through their pregnancies, the societal expectations of motherhood, the burdens of motherhood, and postpartum depression through this folkloric lens.

3 'saint maud' (2019), directed by rose glass.

Morfydd Clark in Saint Maud (2019).

Saint Maud follows Katie, or as she prefers to be called Maud (portrayed by Morfydd Clark ) who is a private care nurse. Maud became a private care nurse after she couldn't save one of her patients' lives at the hospital. Her patient's death also led to her becoming a devout Roman Catholic. When Maud meets her new terminally ill patient Amanda (portrayed by Jennifer Ehle ), she becomes convinced that God has assigned her to save Amanda's soul. Maud's only friend throughout the movie is God, but even her faith is practiced differently. She doesn't go to Church, she worships God all alone in her home, which shows how hard she has isolated herself from the whole world.

Maud uses her pain and loneliness to get closer to God. Loneliness is a subject Rose Glass explores in both of her feature movies . Throughout the movie, the audience follows along as Maud's mental health declines and the lines between reality and fantasy start to blur . Saint Maud is a story about the unresolved trauma of a young adult and the immense harm of needing to be absolved of any wrongdoing. Saint Maud cemented Glass as a filmmaker to watch.

2 'Raw' (2017)

Directed by julia ducournau.

Still from 'Raw': Close up of Justine (Garance Marillier) glaring. She has a nosebleed.

Raw is a cannibalism horror movie that follows a vegetarian veterinary school student. When a hazing ritual forces Justine (portrayed by Garance Marillier ) to consume a raw rabbit kidney, she starts craving meat. Her craving for meat turns into a craving for raw human flesh. Justine explores a world she didn't know existed and discovers some dark secrets about her family.

In its own twisted way, Raw is a coming of age movie as it explores Justine's transformation into her true self after she leaves her parents' supervision . Moreover, Julia Ducournau uses cannibalism as a metaphor for repressed female sexuality. The film also tackles female oppression by exploring oppressed women rather than oppressive men. Raw proved that Ducournau is a filmmaker that is here to disrupt and not to play by the rules. This was further demonstrated by her second film, Titane .

1 'A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night' (2015)

Directed by ana lily amirpour.

Sheila Vand as The Girl, a young woman with fangs wearing a chador in A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is the first Iranian Vampire Western movie. The movie's title is very descriptive as it follows the journey of The Girl (portrayed by Sheila Vand ) as she roams the streets of a fictional Iranian town called Bad City. When reading the title, audiences might think The Girl would be in danger as she walks alone at night. However, Ana Lily Amirpour subverts expectations and The Girl is actually the danger looming at night as she is a vampire who targets men who have wronged women.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is an exploration of female rage and revenge against men who abuse women. Moreover, the movie draws metaphors between The Girl, who is the vampire, and addiction. The first time Arash (portrayed by Arash Marandi ) encounters The Girl is when he is high on ecstasy. Her two prominent victims are both drug users and their deaths are thought to be caused by drug overdose. Another important aspect that Amirpour highlighted is that the chador worn by The Girl is not political and that the only political thing is the existence of a gay gender-binding character in the movie.
