Writing About Domestic Violence 25

Since October is Domestic Awareness Month, I want to help bring awareness to this issue while offering ways to write about how violence affects each of us personally.

It’s not a subject we like to think about. And when it happens publicly, as recent viral videos have shown, those of us who have not experienced that kind of violence personally express morbid fascination and outrage. We know that no one — man or woman — should have to endure that kind of treatment, but it’s so ubiquitous we don’t know what to do about it.

Domestic Violence Month grew out of the Day of Unity begun in 1981 as a day intended to connect battered women’s advocates in their efforts to end violence against women and children. In 1989 Congress passed the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation, and it has been observed every October since then.

Here is the first paragraph of the President’s proclamation of this year’s awareness month:

Domestic violence affects every American.  It harms our communities, weakens the foundation of our Nation, and hurts those we love most.  It is an affront to our basic decency and humanity, and it must end.  During National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we acknowledge the progress made in reducing these shameful crimes, embrace the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse, and recognize that more work remains until every individual is able to live free from fear.

I think we can all agree with those words. We have made progress since 1989, but we have a long way to go. Here are some recent statistics from a variety of web sources (sources cited at end of post):

• 10% of teenagers are intentionally harmed by someone they are dating. In 2013, that figure included 1.5 million high school students. –
• One woman is beaten by her husband or partner every 15 seconds in the U.S. –
• One in four women experiences domestic violence in her lifetime. –
• It’s not just women. Yes, they represent 85% of the domestic violence victims, but let’s not forget the other 15%. –
• Police are more likely to respond quickly if they think the offender is unknown to the victim. –
• Based on reports from 10 countries, between 55 percent and 95 percent of women who had been physically abused by their partners had never contacted non-governmental organizations, shelters, or the police for help.

Reading these statistics has made me wonder how far we have really progressed. Here in the U.S., we believe we are more aware and less tolerant of this kind of violence, so if these are our statistics, how much worse is it in countries where domestic violence is still considered acceptable?

Below, I offer a few journaling, memoir, and personal essay writing prompts to help you develop your thoughts on this issue. Not all the prompts will apply to everyone, so just use what works for you.

The Writing Prompts

Journaling prompts:.

• Perform a word association exercise  with domestic violence at the center. After you’ve finished the word association, set a timer and freewrite for 10 minutes. –
• How do you feel about having a month every year devoted to awareness of this issue? –
• What experience do you have with domestic violence (include emotional and verbal abuse in your answer)? Write about its impact on your decision-making processes, then and now.

Prompts for memoir and personal essay:

• Write about a time you experienced domestic violence, either as a victim or perpetrator. If you never experienced this personally, write a scene about the first time you heard about domestic violence happening to someone you know. –
• How far have we come in the long journey to end domestic violence around the world? Perform some historical research on this subject and write a summary of your findings. –
• Get on a soapbox: Write a speech about what needs to happen to eliminate domestic violence and what your “listeners” can do today. –
• If you have ever been or are a victim of domestic violence, write a compassionate letter to yourself (to the past or present you) offering advice and wisdom for the future.
• If you have never been a victim of domestic violence, but know of someone who has, use your imagination and write a letter from that person’s perspective about why he or she stayed and what it took (or will take) to get out of the situation.

I realize that even if you have never experienced or know someone who has been embroiled in domestic violence, this is not an easy subject to write about — and it is extremely difficult if you have experienced it. To all who take this subject on: thank you for your courage.

This much I know — writing has the power to heal.

Good article, Amber. I did a word association and one of the words I came up with was a love-hate relationship. I had a couple friends years ago that fought constantly to the point of physical violence. We, their peers, called it a love-hate relationship. Now when I look back on it, that phrase seems a form of denial, a way for us to look the other way when it was really a much more serious issue. I hope young people today are more aware than we were.

Barbara, thank you for sharing this bit of insight. You’re right that using the term “love-hate relationship” was probably a way of normalizing the fighting, a way to shrug one’s shoulders and look the other way. I think there is more awareness today and less tolerance of physical violence within a relationship — at least I hope so.

I have been interested in this issue for many years, both from a personal and professional view. I have written a short play and a short story monolgue about domestic violence from a couple of different perspectives. The play has been performed and the monolugue is due to be performed at the end of September. Thanks for addressing the issue on your website.

Domestic violence doesn’t always exhibit itself with bruises and blood. It permeates the soul, the self esteem, the “your stupid”, “your dumb”, :you re ugly”. Then, controlling your actions, what you say in front of others, being groomed in how to behave in public, control what you read(i.e, library books of your interest), not wanting you to expand your knowledge by going back to school. Hiding your keys just when your about to go to class or stating they will not care for you child as you are leaving the house with no time to find a sitter. The slapping when you don’t agreed, you no longer have a voice, no communication w/family members, Walking on egg shells, pretending to hit you buy stopping one inch from your face. Beating you up, no longer slapping your face but punching your face and jaw because you went to visit your mother on Mother’s Day. Take a rifle down and loads it so you cannot take your children out of the house. The Alhambra police called by neighbor but they only gave me10 minutes to get clothes for kids. they don’t even take his gun away, No arrest or a question of an arrest, This was in 1980 Alhambra California. Policemen will side with the man……it was humiliating. I was bruised but made to feel like a nothing. I missed 1 week of work because of the bruising, had to use makeup to hide the bruises for a few weeks. This was a professional , a man who would later run for city council of Alhambra (lost). Intelligent, charismatic and in control. Emotional abuse damages your esteem that lasts a lifetime, even after 40 years I still don’t wear skirt/dresses because of the critical comments of my legs that in the back of my mind I still feel like he was right. After hearing for 13 years how dumb you are you tend to start to believe it which lead me not to try to go back to school or improve my life. Your fight with domestic abuse physically and emotional doesn’t end when you leave, you are fighting everyday to change how you think about yourself, what you were lead to believe about your looks/intelligence, etc. Even a harder task if you do not have a support group.

But the emotional abuse can be the worst part, because its effects are invisible and, as you share, last a lifetime. You are strong. You are beautiful. You are smart. I wrote a 6 paged article I just started and it will be under 20 pages. Which sites do I submit this to be paid for it Its my own experiences surviving abuse in childhood and through adulthood and have found writing to be a release like singing is for me.

I am a victem of domestic violence 2 years of being “free” im still not.. i need help.. ive had no luck in my life what so ever.. council wont help me im stuck everyday that goes by just seems to get harder and harder im now dealing with heart problems.. waiting on a epg at the doctors and even im having to wait on that because there struggling to get “pads”. My lifes a mess i try to be strong but it just seems i get strong then something hits me again :'( why is it they say it will be ok.. when really it wont.. dreams turn into nightmares, the light fades when the suns shining it just always seems like its raining.. but when its actually raining u can cry freely as no one can see a tear as its just like a rain drop. Im not affraid of being alone im scared for life its self. When i think im getting there its like the mountian i just climed has trippled insize, why at the age of 22 am i getting pannic attaks. Its only been recently i went to the doctors ive had my bloods and waiting on a epc, i feel like my heart is on fire in my chest like theres no one there to put out the flames. My family ask for money when i wish to see them i know in this world thats all this world is about. Im thinking of just getting a horse and carage and going bk in time. But this world has evolved and is getting worse by the day. Those who actually need help are alone and suffeing.. but were do they actually go to get help?

Hello i am a 33 year old male and i have myself been physically and emotionally abused for 2 year by my noq ex spouse(female) I am looking to write of my experience as a victim behind closed doors but to the outside world i was portrayed as an abuser by many and all people especially law enforcement. I have learned as a male and my own experience Males cannot be victims. Sitting in a cold concrete cell with numerous injuries for many hours because police refuse to believe a woman can inflict such injuries on a man(im 6 foot 2 190lbs) even though there is not a scratch on my now ex spouse because her lies were chosen as the truth. This is just one example of many and i am now ready to take a stand for myself and others i know who suffer at the hands of there wife, girlfriend, or common-law and write a small book. Derek, thank you for choosing to tell your truth. It’s difficult enough for women to be believed when they speak up about abuse, and I can only imagine how much harder it is for a man to speak up in the same situation: he is judged as somehow being “unmanly” and, as you say, people cannot imagine that the woman can be the abuser. But abuse happens both ways, and I think it’s important as a culture that we recognize that and listen to anyone who claims they are physically or emotionally abused. In those situations, I know it’s difficult for people (and police) to know who is lying and who is not, as it is often one person’s word against another. We must find a way to deal compassionately with everyone who says they’ve been a victim of violence.

I have a voice but no one is listening. I am a mother but I am scared for my children. I have a voice but I am not heard or respected . I lived with a bully someone to intimidated me and my children but I am paying the price. No one is listening. My children think its normal but it isnt. Who tells their children they are pigs; who sends their children to bed without food because they want you to do more homework and who washes their children’s mouth with soap and frightens them a bully does over and over but it is supposedly jovial. I left my children because I became scared of a man who picked on me nothing was right. My children watched but I had no voice. . I was financially abused but I have no voice. I am tired and all I seem to do is scream but no one is listening. My former husband does not tell me where my children are. My former husband doesn’t tell me anything about my children. They see therapists but I am not consulted and its his opinion only I have no voice no respect as a mother. I just have to accept, that I cannot prove emotional abuse but I can prove financial but no one is listening. My children will more than likely be abusers and be abuse but I cannot stop it no one is listening. Please listen I was told today I am not burnt but charred . I have paid tens of thousands to a system that is failing my children and myself. I now have my sister in law and she too is suffering the cruel treatment that her husband does to her and her children. He is no different to his brother. I have one person who knows what I went thru. My children are still there and I am desperate to help them and others. Please help me.

And contrary to the myth that women usually get the children or that women are protected by the courts, my experience is that the courts let us down and do not listen. They believe the abusers. I sat motionless on the bed, tears streaming down my face and clutching my abdomen, feeling the pain aroung my bruised neck and praying to God, that my unborn child would be ok. There in the darkness, I.knew that few would understand or even sympathize that I was a victim of domestic violence.

My daughter was nearly two years old, when the clouds of life came crashing down, as not only was I living in a private hell at home, I was working in a toxic work environment and trying to be a loving mother to my two young children. I had a mental breakdown at Christmas time. I looked at the Christmas tree and Holiday decor and felt dead inside and two weeks later, my husband hit me in the back of the head, the contusion was the size if a golf ball, and I was in such despair, that I took over 10 anti depressant medication.

My life was spared and my world changed nearly two years later, when fate intervened and saved my babies and myself. My husband was arrested and sent to prison for murder.

It was 35 years ago since he was arrested and a year ago I was told that he was going to be released from prison and immediately, I started to have PSTD flashbacks until I came to the realization that he would be over 1000 miles away and in a wheelchair. He was subsequently denied parole and this past July my son was notified that his father was dying of cancer and my son went to see his father in a prison hospital. His father passed away in August.

My heart and soul goes out to every person who has been and/or is in an abusive relationship. My daughter followed in my footsteps and she was a 4th Generation survivor of Domestic Violence.

There were little to no resources available when I was being abused and he did threaten to kill my young children. He never accepted responsibility for his behavior and at the end, I prayed that he was free from pain and died in peace.

Why when you talk about domestic violence do you only talk about battered wives? I feel great empathy for them and believe that their cause is underfunded. However, the cause of domestic violence against men is UNfunded and even unpublicized.

That said, the vast majority of domestic violence is male-to-female violence, so it’s natural that this would get the most attention. Because of the stigma involved (the “male macho” standard), men who are beaten by their partners are less likely to come forward. Hopefully, we can begin to break down some of those double standards in our conversations about the issue.

Domestic violence is a topic that’s hard to talk about but is incredibly important to understand. It’s not only about physical violence, but also about control, manipulation, and terror that can cause emotional trauma to a person. It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover is one such book and now a movie, in which the subject matter is very well communicated. Apart from being a love story with its characters and plot so touching, the storyline treats the audience to a deep cautious approach to domestic violence. In this blog, we will discuss the plot and major characters, the story which portrays domestic abuse insightfully and heartbreakingly.

The Storyline: Love, Pain, and Choices

The story revolves around a young girl, Lily Bloom, who relocates to Boston to restart her life. She opens up a flower shop and very soon makes good friends with a successful neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid. At first sight, everything in their relationship looked perfect because Ryle was friendly, wise, and deeply in love with Lily. However, while they continue to develop their bond, some cracks begin to show.

Ryle’s anger issues start to surface, leading to a cycle of abuse that Lily struggles to escape. The story also delves and flips back into Lily’s past, as she reconnects with her first love, Atlas Corrigan, who is the epitome of a loving and affectionate memory. As she tries to work through her toxic relationship with Ryle, Atlas represents a safe and loving space for her. The story walks through an inner struggle of Lily as she works through her love for Ryle versus the fear of the violence that comes with it.

Understanding Domestic Violence Through the Story

Whatever the age, sex, or socioeconomic status, it affects millions of people worldwide because domestic abuse is a terrible problem. It is a pattern of behaviour where one partner abuses the other physically, emotionally, or psychologically and seeks control over them. Due to many reasons like financial dependence, love, fear, and social pressure, a lot of victims of domestic abuse may find it hard and struggle to leave the abusive relationships.

In It Ends With Us, Colleen Hoover masterfully details how domestic abuse can start very quietly and build up with time. While their initial dates seem to label Ryle as a tender and caring partner, his aggressive tendencies are soon revealed to Lily catching her off guard. This gradual shift is common in abusive relationships , where the abuser initially hides their true nature until the victim is emotionally invested and less likely to leave.

The Role of Love and Guilt

One of the most challenging aspects of domestic violence is the role of love that victims have for their abusers. Like Lily, many victims genuinely love their abusers, making it even more difficult for them to leave. It Ends With Us communicates this with the constant battle with love that Lily goes through. She finds it even harder to believe that Ryle is capable of causing harm because she is reminded of their happy times together when he was helpful and compassionate.

The other major factor that keeps victims in violent relationships is guilt. Lily feels guilty for even considering leaving Ryle, especially when he shows guilt for his actions. He apologizes to Lily and promises that this will never happen again. Still in love with Ryle and wanting to believe his promise, Lily forgives him. And that is exactly what happens in abusive relationships: the victim clings to every hope that the abuser may change. As the story unfolds, Ryle’s violent behaviour in this situation was certainly part of a recurring pattern rather than some kind of one-time accident. And still, she worries about how leaving him might affect his life and career.

Breaking the Cycle

One of the most important messages given by It Ends With Us is that one has to say, “Enough is enough,” so that a chain of violence could be broken. Throughout the story, Lily reflects on her childhood and recalls witnessing her father abuse her mother. She remembers vowing never to end up in a similar situation, yet she finds herself in one. Even with her love for Ryle, the decision to leave him is a testament to her strength and her will to cut this cycle for the benefit of her daughter. The book also emphasizes the importance of support systems. Lily’s family and friends play a very vital role in helping her to move away from Ryle and start her life afresh. It also points out the fact that victims of domestic abuse often rely on the help of others to break free from their abusers.

It Ends With Us is a powerful and moving story that sheds light on domestic abuse. The story of Lily helps the audience understand the dynamics within an abusive relationship and the problems that poor victims face as they try to get out. The ending of this vicious circle of abuse and finding the courage to finally escape, even when it seems impossible, is yet another theme of the book.

A new A$4.7 billion national funding package announced today will deliver much needed resources to address family and sexual violence.

For years, specialist support services, community legal services, therapeutic responses and men’s behaviour change programs have been saying they can’t keep up with the demand from people living with family and sexual violence. Long wait lists, delayed access to support and inadequate legal representation are just some of the problems victim-survivors have faced due to this under-resourcing.

When the service sector cannot respond to all the calls for assistance and intervention it receives, victim-survivors are left in harm’s way. Their lives may be at risk. And there are lost opportunities to intervene with people using violence to prevent their behaviour from escalating further.

Previously, the sector has estimated it needs approximately $1 billion per year to meet the needs of Australians experiencing family and sexual violence. While the current announcement does not meet that demand, it is an unprecedented investment in frontline services and a very welcome one.

What’s in the package?

The announcement from National Cabinet places the safety and recovery of victim-survivors front and centre. It promotes holding people who use family and sexual violence accountable. It does this by strengthening legal systems, specialist services, and programs for perpetrator change.

The plan addresses the impacts of violence on children and young people. It also promises to improve the coordination and stability of family and sexual violence responses across the country.

Specific measures that will receive a boost in funding include:

$3.9 billion over five years to the family, domestic and sexual violence sector, and a commitment to long-term funding certainty for services

an $800 million increase in legal assistance funding to services addressing gender-based violence, over five years

a more than $80 million boost to trauma-informed support for children and young people to promote recovery and intervene early to prevent inter-generational violence.

A nationally coordinated approach

There were commitments from first ministers to work collaboratively on several national reform areas.

These include a shared national risk assessment framework for family violence and information sharing systems to better respond to high-risk perpetrators.

There’ll also be an audit of government systems that are being weaponised by perpetrators as a tool of abuse.

The announcement substantially extends previous funding commitments, including the nearly $1 billion in funding announced in May . That money extended the Leaving Violence Program . Also the announcement last year of $100 million over five years to deliver targeted prevention activity across the community.

Together, this investment goes a long way towards implementing the holistic and multi-sectoral approach identified in the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children .

The national plan identifies four priority areas for action:

early intervention

recovery and healing.

Each of these is crucial to addressing family and sexual violence, both now and into the future.

This national approach promises to work collaboratively across all levels of government. To be successful, it will take sustained efforts across governments, by justice and legal institutions and across the community services sector. That’s not to mention in our workplaces and schools, too.

There should be no wrong door for someone experiencing family or sexual violence to be able to access information and be connected with specialist services.

Where to from here?

The immediate and crucial issue is the timing for the first of these funds to be available to front line services. The funding package is due to start roll out from July 1 next year.

But to meet demand right now, many family and sexual violence services need that funding to commence much more urgently.

Many men’s behaviour change programs have also faced long waitlists and a lack of capacity due to insufficient funding.

There is also concern about workforce challenges facing the family and sexual violence sectors.

Long term under-investment has meant these specialist service workers often face short-term contracts, precarious work and unreasonable workloads. All this contributes to worker burnout.

Efforts to train new family violence caseworkers are hampered by expensive course fees and a lack of flexible study options. The same issues stop existing community workers from being able to specialise in family violence response work.

If we really are to end violence against women in “one generation”, as the national plan intends, then we must continue to work together as a community.

Crucially, we must hold governments to account to ensure that the promised funding is delivered where it is needed – and soon.

Telehealth services are essential in providing services for people unable to come out and seek healthcare. This study will use a case study to provide telehealth services to a victim of suspected domestic violence who has red marks on her chest, indicating a fist by her partner.

After noticing the patient has a red mark on the chest, the clinician’s first step is to ask her if there is another person in the house. If there is, the clinician should clearly state that, according to HIPAA laws, telehealth should be conducted without anyone else in the house (Simon, 2021). Once the other person has left the room, the provider should assure the patient that they are safe and that all the information they give is confidential and will not be disclosed to any other person.

The treatment plan for this patient would include social support from the telehealth clinical team. The patient requires a healthcare specialist to conduct regular visits to talk to them about violence and examine if there are more injuries to the patient (Simon, 2021). In addition, the violent partner may require counseling, and legal action can be taken if they do not change. The other treatment the patient requires is painkillers to help the patient ease pain so they can have a good sleep. Since the patient states that they cannot sleep, it shows that they must be experiencing physical and mental pain, which is why they are unable to sleep.

The healthcare provider will have provided a treatment plan that addresses the two issues. The clinician should visit the patient after two weeks to see their progress, carry out a follow-up session, and administer more medication to the patient. With the effective use of telehealth, treatment of domestic violence will reach the most remote areas where most people cannot report the cases or visit a healthcare center.

Violence against Women in India

Understanding trends in the extent of violence against women can be helpful in challenging violence against women and gender inequality. In this paper, we compare the incidence of violence, as measured in the National Family Health Surveys, to the reporting of violence, as compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau. We also shed light on heterogeneity in incidence and reporting across India’s states. We find that violence against women is common, that most violence against women is not reported to the police, that violence by husbands is less likely to be reported than violence by others, and that the reporting of violence has not improved over the last decade and a half. These concerning findings highlight the urgent need for social and legal interventions to reduce violence against women, and to improve its reporting.

Sexual and physical violence against women is one of the clearest and most detrimental manifestations of gender inequa lity. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals aim at “eliminating violence against women and girls” (UNWomen 2022). And violence against women remains one of the core concerns of movements against patriarchy in India and globally (Kannabiran and Menon 2007). Despite this recogn ition, public discussions on violence against women in India are c onstrained by the lack of reliable information on the magnitude of violence against women, the extent to which cases are reported to the police, or trends in incidence and reporting (Bhattacharya 2013; Gupta 2014; Rukmini 2021).

• Physical Abuse: This form of abuse involves physical harm inflicted upon the victim. It includes acts such as hitting, kicking, slapping, choking, or any other form of bodily violence. Often, the physical scars are visible, serving as a grim reminder of the trauma endured.
• Sexual Abuse: Sexual abuse within abusive relationships involves non-consensual sexual activities imposed upon the victim. This may range from unwanted sexual advances and coercion to sexual assault. Victims often grapple with profound feelings of violation and shame.
• Psychological and Emotional Abuse: Psychological and emotional abuse is insidious, leaving no visible marks but causing severe psychological harm. It encompasses tactics like manipulation, verbal threats, humiliation, isolation, and control. The scars of emotional abuse run deep, eroding the victim's self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
• Financial Abuse: Abusers often exercise control over their victims' financial resources, leaving them financially dependent and powerless. This form of abuse may involve withholding money, preventing employment, or sabotaging the victim's financial stability.
• Digital Abuse: In the digital age, abusers have found new avenues to exert control. Digital abuse includes actions like cyberbullying, stalking on social media, or using technology to monitor and intimidate the victim.

The Complex Dynamics of Abusive Relationships

• Cycle of Abuse: Abusive relationships often follow a cyclical pattern. The cycle typically begins with a period of tension building, characterized by escalating conflict and tension. This tension culminates in an acute abusive incident, such as physical violence. Following the abusive episode, an abuser may display remorse and offer apologies, initiating a phase of reconciliation. However, this reconciliation phase is often short-lived and eventually gives way to renewed tension, perpetuating the cycle.
• Isolation: Abusers frequently isolate their victims, cutting them off from friends and family. Isolation serves to control the victim's social interactions and limit their support network, making it harder for them to seek help or escape the relationship.
• Gaslighting: Gaslighting is a manipulative tactic used by abusers to make victims doubt their reality. Abusers may deny their actions, trivialize the abuse, or shift blame onto the victim, causing them to question their perception of events.
• Dependency: Abusers often foster financial and emotional dependency, making it challenging for victims to imagine a life outside the relationship. This dependency can be a significant barrier to leaving the abuser.
• Emotional Bonding: Paradoxically, abusive relationships may involve moments of intimacy and affection. These intermittent displays of love can create a strong emotional bond that keeps victims attached to their abusers, hoping for change.
• Patterns of Escalation: Recognizing patterns of escalating abuse is essential. Victims and their support networks should be vigilant about increases in the frequency or severity of violence, as this can signal a heightened risk.
• Isolation and Control: Assess the extent to which the abuser isolates and controls the victim. Isolation tactics and increased control can indicate a greater risk, as they may signify the abuser's desperation to maintain dominance.
• Access to Weapons: Determine the abuser's access to weapons. The presence of firearms or other deadly weapons can significantly elevate the risk of lethal violence.
• History of Violence: Consider the abuser's history of violence. If they have a documented history of violent behavior, including previous arrests or restraining orders, this should be taken seriously as a predictive factor.
• Escalation of Threats: Monitor any escalation in threats made by the abuser. Expressions of intent to harm the victim or themselves should be treated as urgent warning signs.
• Support System: Assess the strength of the victim's support system. A robust support network can be a protective factor, potentially reducing the risk of further violence.
• Legal Intervention: Evaluate whether legal interventions, such as restraining orders, have been sought or granted. Understanding the legal measures in place can provide insights into the victim's safety.
