Public Affairs Communications Certificate
Public Affairs Communications (PAC) is at the forefront of politics, policymaking and issue advocacy. Grady College is home to the first program in the nation to provide undergraduate students with practical training in this emerging field.
The PAC program provides students with specialized communications skills aimed at educating, shaping or changing public opinion on public policy, legislation, political candidates or issues.
Grady College and the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) jointly offer their students the opportunity to obtain a Public Affairs Professional Certificate. The PAC program and certificate are designed to prepare students for careers in public affairs.
Strategic Health & Risk Communication Certificate
The Strategic Health & Risk Communication certificate offers undergraduate students the knowledge, skills and experience related to applying communication principles to address public health problems. It prepares students to better meet the evolving health needs of society at large and use their health promotion and/or communication skills in an applied manner. The program culminates in a capstone course in which students will create a public health communication campaign for a community client, providing students with valuable experiential and hands-on learning.
The SHRC track requires six courses in a balanced curriculum: two core courses at Grady College, two courses at the College of Public Health, and two elective special topics courses. Students will apply for acceptance into the certificate program. However, students outside the certificate can take these courses, thus broadening the number of students introduced to this discipline.
Graduate Certificate in Crisis, Risk, and Disaster Communication
At the University of Georgia, academics and practitioners from industry, nonprofits and the public sector have worked collaboratively to prepare future leaders and executives in the crisis, risk and disaster communication practices. To educate the next generation of crisis communication leaders, based on the successful CCTT model of bridging academia and industry, this 12-credit graduate certificate program in crisis, risk, and disaster communication provides advanced learning about crisis, risk, and disaster communication through specialized coursework connecting theory and practice across sectors and industries. It is specifically aimed at students interested in obtaining in-depth and integrated education in the interdisciplinary areas of crisis and risk communication, risk management and disaster management.
The 12-credit graduate certificate has its program of study constructed with two core Grady College courses (6 credits). Depending on the desired study of focus and/or career orientation, students will choose one of two additional tracks: (1) business track in partnership with the Terry College of Business or (2) public health track in partnership with the College of Public Health.

Research Spotlight
Brain, body, & media lab.
The Brain, Body and Media Lab investigates mechanisms (e.g., attention, emotion) that underlie audience/consumer response to different features of messages (e.g., models in ads) and individual difference variables that are associated with these responses. Equipment in this lab includes peripheral psychophysiological measures (EMG, EDA, ECG) and central measures (EEG). By using these measures, we are able to identify and dissociate between psychological processes that occur in response to media using fluctuations in the activity of the brain and body – without relying on self-reported assessment of these processes. Measurement of implicit processes in a media/advertising context furthers understanding of cognitive and affective processing of media messages which has both theoretical and practical implications.
Center for Advanced Computer-Human Ecosystems
The Center for Advanced Computer-Human Ecosystems (CACHE) is an interdisciplinary research facility for a human-centered approach to investigating virtual experiences and how they influence the attitudes and behaviors of users. The lab makes forward-thinking inquiries into how interactions in virtual worlds can shift traditional rules and norms of social interactions in the physical world. Our projects apply frameworks of psychosocial and behavioral sciences to explore, test and evaluate the impact of virtual and augmented environments on a wide range of social issues.
Center for Health & Risk Communication
The Grady College Center for Health and Risk Communication is focused on health and risk communication-related research, teaching and service that advances knowledge about effective and understandable messages to help people make better health-related decisions.
Social Media Engagement & Evaluation Suite
The Social media Engagement and Evaluation (SEE) Suite at the Department of Advertising and Public Relations of the Grady College at the University of Georgia is an innovative space, designed for students and researchers to gain the skills, experience and knowledge to become leaders in the changing social communication ecosystems.
The mix between industry technology and a media lab allows us to train our students for examining cross platform social data, analyzing engagement, identifying actionable insights and prepare them for jobs in a wide range of industries and providing our graduate students and faculty with the data, software and hardware to conduct cutting-edge research at the University of Georgia.
The Crisis Communication Think Tank (CCTT) was established in 2018 at the University of Georgia as a thought leadership entity. It is designed to further discussions and understanding of crisis communication and strategic conflict management, with an emphasis on evolving technologies.
Housed at UGA’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication and led by the C. Richard Yarbrough Professor in Crisis Communication Leadership, the CCTT aims to build collaborations among leading crisis scholars and practitioners globally, through dialogue on emerging topics and co-creation of evidence-based advice for next-generation crisis research and practice. Our overarching goals are:
- To connect crisis communication experts from the segmented worlds of academia and industry practice.
- To reshape and refine how crisis communication is understood and practiced.
- To advance crisis communication knowledge via academic-practitioner collaborative research.
- To educate the next generation of crisis communication scholars and practitioners.
- To design protocols for handling “sticky crisis” challenges effectively and ethically at the top decision-making level via crisis preparedness and resilience.
We believe it is imperative that the advertising and public relations industries strategically address the gap in diversity among its staff and strive for a more inclusive, equitable and welcoming environment representative of all the voices, ideas and perspectives of our global society.
AdPR Academy is a solution to aid in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
The ever-growing, global consumer market is more ethnically and culturally diverse with each generation. This means that the professionals and organizations that serve this market must truly reflect current and future generations but also be creatively nimble and innovative to build and sustain engagement with the global consumer market.
The diversity gap in advertising and public relations is wide! Whites comprise nearly 90% of management roles in advertising and promotion, marketing and sales and public relations (and fundraising) in the U.S., according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As of 2019, a total of 6.0% African Americans/Blacks, 5.4% Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders and 8.5% Hispanics/Latinos held manager roles in the occupations above.
Our goal is to amplify the power of diversity, equity and inclusion while investing in the pipeline of new leaders in advertising and public relations career paths.
AdPR Connection is an annual student-run networking event that includes workshops, a career fair and networking socials to help students connect with future employers and build skills needed for their job search. AdPR Connection is sponsored by UGA’s PRSSA and AdClub and takes place each fall.

Perspectives
“When I was 17, the president of the Hispanic Organization Promoting Education (HoPe) David Araya told me that “to lead is to influence, to influence is to change the world.” Since then, I’ve worked towards being a leader in my community and being the change I wish to see in the world. I decided to major in public relations because I was certain that this pathway would equip me to communicate, to influence and to lead.”

“Adding an extra year to my education with the Integrated ADPR program has helped me understand the other side of the industry that I didn’t learn in undergrad and has given me a competitive edge that has made me more marketable in networking and interviews . I highly recommend the program to anyone who wants to learn more about the industry and how PR and advertising complement each other! I feel that it has helped me narrow down exactly what I want to do out of college.”

Marketing is concerned with decisions that relate to a firm’s customers, competitors, and network of partners including channel members and promotion agencies. It focuses on how customers make choices and how companies design products, services, and programs to satisfy customer needs.
Given the breadth of marketing decisions, marketing scholars study a variety of marketing issues ranging from marketing strategy to product development, consumer decision making, and customer satisfaction. The field of marketing is interdisciplinary, drawing theories and methods from disciplines such as economics, psychology, sociology, and statistics, among others.
Marketing Concentration Overview
Michael Lowe, Associate Professor of Marketing, gives an overview of the Marketing concentration within the Scheller Ph.D. program.
What is the Focus of a Marketing Ph.D.?
The Ph.D. program in marketing is designed to provide students with the skills necessary for a successful academic research and teaching career. We train students to identify and define interesting and important marketing phenomena and develop the necessary methodological tools to investigate these insights with original research.
Why a Marketing Ph.D. at Georgia Tech?
Since interaction with faculty mentors is an essential component of doctoral training, students in our program generally initiate research projects with one or more faculty members. Faculty and students are involved in joint research cutting across a wide spectrum of issues at the core of marketing, as well as multidisciplinary topics that interface with other functional areas such as management, economics, and psychology. The culture at Georgia Tech encourages multidisciplinary collaboration across areas within the Scheller College of Business and across Colleges within the Institute. In addition, the Ph.D. program is designed to expose students early on to the methods and contributions of all three research areas in marketing — consumer behavior, modeling, and strategy. While our program’s emphasis is on preparing students for academic research, our Ph.D. students also learn to teach and have the opportunity to strengthen their teaching skills by leveraging the resources of the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL) . The Center runs a number of specialized programs for junior faculty and graduate teaching assistants designed to develop teaching skills.
Marketing Specializations
Marketing Ph.D. students are not required to enter the program with a pre-established area of specialization. During the first year, they will be guided to select an area to specialize in.
As part of this training, students take a common set of “breadth” courses as well as “depth” courses tailored to their specific interests. In addition, students learn by working with faculty members on joint research, conducting a series of original research projects, and assisting in the teaching of marketing courses.
- Consumer Behavior
Consumer behavior focuses on the study of consumer-level behaviors by conducting laboratory and/or field experiments, among others, to understand consumers’ decisions, actions, and responses and to explain why those behaviors are taking place. This line of research tends to emphasize the cognitive psychology of consumer decisions, though alternative perspectives such as sociology and social psychology can also be adopted.
- Marketing Modeling
Marketing modeling focuses on the study of a variety of marketplace phenomena related to marketing decisions including market entry, competitive reactions, pricing, and innovation, among many others. The focus tends to be on advancing the field’s knowledge related to the understanding of market-level responses or methodological techniques. It attracts students with an interest in the application of higher-level econometrics, probability, and statistics to marketing questions.
- Marketing Strategy
Marketing strategy focuses on the study of firm and manager behavior, across a broad range of marketing topics including sales force management, innovation management, competitive strategy, and marketing communications. It studies the evolution and effect of managerial decisions and marketing capabilities, processes, and orientations on firm behavior and performance. Strategy researchers use surveys, archival data, qualitative studies, or large-scale third-party data to study related phenomena.

Darby Miller, a senior majoring in marketing, has accomplished much during her time at UGA. But it’s not the organizations she has worked for or the awards she has received that mean the most to her. She’s most grateful for “all of the unique, inspiring and remarkable people this school has given me.”
“Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” I’ve learned so much in college, but truly finding what drives your passion is the most important. I’ve loved serving this campus through many unique ways. The Student Government Association, UGA Orientation, the Visitors Center, Wesley Foundation and Zeta Tau Alpha will continue to hold a special place in my heart.”

Ph.D. Degree
At the discretion of individual schools or departments and with the approval of the dean of the Graduate School, applicants may be considered for admission to one of the following classifications:
- Prospective Candidate for a degree. Applicants who meet all requirements for admission to a degree program may apply as prospective candidates for a graduate degree. Applicants who are missing an official document or test scores may be admitted provisionally to a degree program, if recommended by the department and approved by the graduate dean. The conditions of the provisional admission must be satisfied by the end of the first semester of enrollment.
- Nondegree (ND). Applicants who do not intend to pursue a degree but who wish to take courses for professional advancement, licensure, or certification purposes, and who hold a baccalaureate degree or higher degree from a regionally accredited institution, should apply for nondegree status. Nondegree students who are later admitted as prospective degree candidates may apply up to 9 hours of course work taken in nondegree status toward a graduate degree program, subject to the approval of the major professor, the departmental graduate coordinator, and the dean of the Graduate School.
- Graduate Transient (TRANS). Transient admission may be granted to students in good standing at regionally accredited graduate schools who wish to enroll for one semester at the University of Georgia. Students admitted in this classification who later wish to enroll as prospective candidates for a degree must make formal application to the Graduate School as described in item 1 above.
Section B: Admission Procedure
The GRE revised General Test is required of all degree candidates. Students who have already taken the exam but feel that they can significantly improve their score are encouraged to take the exam again, since the GRE score is an important factor in the competition for all university-wide assistantships and fellowships. Transcripts from all universities attended are required as well as three letters of reference. Appropriate forms and instructions are available from the Geography Department website (www.ggy.uga.edu). Additional information and instructions for international students is also available from the Geography Department website. Based on the above information the Graduate Studies Committee makes admission recommendations to the Graduate School. The final and official admission decision is made by the Graduate School.
The University of Georgia requires a minimum level of English language proficiency and will accept satisfactory scores on either the TOEFL or IELTS language proficiency examinations for admission of international applicants to graduate programs. Test scores must be submitted directly from the testing agency. The minimum TOEFL score requirement is an overall score of 80 with at least 20 on speaking and writing. The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band-width of 6.5, with no single band (score) below 6.0.
Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit official TOEFL or IELTS scores that are not more than two years old. Applicants who have received degrees from accredited institutions in the U.S. or from institutions in countries where English is the primary language (e.g., the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand) usually are not required to submit the TOEFL (or IELTS) scores. If such an applicant received the degree more than two years prior to application to the Graduate School and has been residing/working in a country where the primary language is not English, he or she must submit current scores. Students who are currently enrolled and have been enrolled at least one year at a regionally accredited U.S. institution, may have the English language proficiency requirement waived, if their work shows a strong quality of performance. Some departments may require the TOEFL (or IELTS) regardless of previous educational experience.

The Marketing & Supply Chain PhD program trains students in how to identify interesting marketing phenomena (in consumer behavior and marketing strategy), how to test their ideas, and ultimately, how to publish their research in our field’s most prestigious academic journals. This 4-5 year process involves close collaboration with and mentorship by our faculty. In addition to working closely with faculty on research, PhD students focus their efforts on coursework for the first two years (PhD seminars, research methods courses, courses in economics, sociology, and psychology), and on their dissertation research in the latter years.
Our PhD students also graduate with a firm foundation in teaching. Over the course of their program, PhD students will teach a limited number of undergraduate courses. Such courses typically include consumer behavior, marketing research, marketing management, and personal selling. Feedback from these courses affords students the opportunity to hone their teaching skills before embarking on their formal academic careers.
