Doctoral studies
Doctoral programmes (PhD programmes) are offered by all six departments at the Lund University School of Economics and Management. It is often given in collaboration with other parts of Lund University or with other institutions in Sweden.
The doctoral degree is the highest academic degree. The Swedish doctoral degree comprises 240 credits and the doctoral programme normally takes four years of full-time study.
The programmes differ somewhat between disciplines, but in all cases they consist of at least one year of course work and at least two years spent writing the doctoral thesis. The thesis can be produced in the form of a monograph or in the form of a number of articles published during the doctoral programme, a so-called compilation thesis. The thesis is defended at a public defence where an opponent reviews and opposes the thesis. An examining committee consisting of at least three people grade the thesis.
You also have the option of obtaining a licentiate degree after 120 credits. Such a degree can either conclude a programme or be awarded when you are halfway to a doctoral degree. The thesis is then called a licentiate thesis and is presented and examined at a seminar.
After graduation many doctors pursue academic careers while others obtain positions within business or public administration.
At present, the School of Economics and Management has about 100 admitted doctoral students and around 20 doctoral theses are produced each year.

Financing your doctoral studies
At the School of Economics and Management there are two different ways of financing your studies: employment as a doctoral student, or external funding. External funding may consist of employment outside the university or a scholarship from an external source. It is important to recognise that the different types of funding give you different levels of social security. Upon admission, funding must be secured for the entire duration of the programme and must be at least half-time.
The doctoral degree conferment ceremony
The doctoral degree conferment ceremony takes place at the end of May and is the biggest event of the academic year. During the ceremony, the University rewards those who have completed a doctoral programme and defended a doctoral thesis. At the promotion ceremony, the insignia of learning are awarded: the hat or laurel wreath, the ring and the diploma.
On the same occasion, the University also honours outstanding researchers from other universities and individuals by awarding them honorary doctorates. As a tribute to previous generations, those who received their doctoral degree 50 years ago are also promoted to jubilee doctors.

PhD studies
Doctoral Studies in Sociology and Social Anthropology
The Department of Sociology at Lund University offers Postgraduate Studies in Sociology and Social Anthropology. Qualifications for Postgraduates comprise four years of studying (240 ECTS). The minimum requirements for admission is three years of full-time university studies, including a year and a half of full-time studies in the advertised discipline or equivalent.
Our subjects
Sociology is a discipline analysing social relations and processes ranging from global and historical transformations to everyday relations, life history and formation of identities at an individual level. A broad range of theoretical perspectives are important tools in analysing different social problems and processes. Sociologists carry out research on such diverse topics as gender relations, power relations, social inequalities, ethnic conflicts, youth cultures, mass media, criminology, environment and risk, labour market relations and housing. The methods used are manifold, e.g. comparative analysis, participant observations and text analysis, as well as statistical analysis.
Social Anthropology
Social Anthropology is one of the major internationally recognized basic research social science disciplines. The unifying focus of anthropology is the study of humankind, its history, social structures and cultural forms. The field has historically had a major influence on the other social sciences since several major approaches, structural functionalism, structuralism, structural marxism were elaborated very much within social anthropology. The department at Lund university has been a significant contributor to what is referred to as historical anthropology, and it has been the center for the development of global systemic anthropology.

PhD studies
Once you have completed your Master’s degree, you can go on to third-cycle studies and specialise in an area you are interested in.
PhD studies normally comprise four years of full-time study, corresponding to 240 credits. You spend approximately one year on courses and seminars, and three years on your research project. You compile your research findings in a doctoral thesis, which usually consists of a summary and synthesis together with articles that you have published in international scientific journals. You present and argue for your thesis in a public defence. If your thesis is approved and you have completed all the course components, you can receive your PhD degree.
The learning outcomes for research studies
PhD studies are to educate and train scholars capable of conducting research of high quality and working with other qualified assignments within higher education, industry and society, where the experience of research is essential. PhD studies aim to provide the following:
- Specialised subject knowledge
- The ability to think creatively and critically
- Training in planning, implementation and evaluation of research tasks/projects
- Practice presenting research findings, both orally and in writing, to various target groups
Biological research
Our research covers the entire field of biology, from molecular, cell and organismal biology to ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation biology and environmental sciences protection.
The Department of Biology has a long and distinguished research tradition. It can be traced back to Professor of Philosophia naturalis et physica experimentalis (natural history and physics), Kilian Stobaeus (1690-1742) (in Wikipedia). Now, as then, the Department of Biology is conducting modern research at the cutting edge of the research field. If you are curious about our research, you can find brief descriptions of our research specialisations on our research page .
Entry requirements
In order to be admitted to research studies at the Department of Biology, you must meet both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirements state that you must have completed a degree programme in higher education corresponding to at least 240 credits, or have equivalent knowledge. The specific entry requirements normally mean that you must have studied second-cycle courses that are relevant to the planned research specialisation and completed a degree project in the subject.
The general syllabus for biology specifies all the entry requirements (Faculty of Science's website) . The determining factor for selection for research studies is the expected ability to benefit from the degree programme.
Application and admission
Check for vacant doctoral studentships on our web page for job opportunities . There are no fixed application periods for doctoral studentships; vacancies are announced when finances and other conditions allow. If you are interested in starting research studies, contact a potential supervisor in your subject of interest. This will provide you with current information on research projects and study finance. Applications for admission to research studies at the Department of Biology are made via Lund University’s electronic recruitment portal and are always linked to an advertised vacancy for a doctoral studentship.
Study finance
If you are admitted to research studies, you will also be employed as a doctoral student with a salary. The doctoral studentship salary is increased according to centrally determined increments, based on how long you have been employed.

How to become a PhD student at LTH, Faculty of Engineering
To become a doctoral student at LTH is usually through emploument at an institution. When an institution wants to employ and accept a doctoral student in a certain thrid cycle study subject, the position needs to be advertised, i.e. employment and admission are done in competition with other applicants. LTH does not apply fixed application times, but a doctoral position can be advertised at any time throughout the year.
All vacancies, including doctoral positions, are advertised on Lund University's website, among other places.

Requirements
To be eligible for third cycle studies, both basic eligibility and special eligibility are required. The basic eligibility is the same for all doctoral education in Sweden and is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance. For each third cycle subject, the higher education institutions have the opportunity to set requirements for special eligibility, i.e. knowledge that is considered necessary to be able to complete that particular education.
In order to be fundamentally qualified, you need to meet one of the following requirements:
- completed a degree at the advanced level,
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
- in any other way within or outside Sweden acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.
Basic qualifications are often not enough to be able to complete a certain education. Knowledge in, for example, a certain subject area is normally also needed.
The requirements for special requirements may relate to:
- knowledge from higher education or equivalent education,
- specific professional experience, and
- necessary language skills or other conditions conditioned by the education.
For you to be enrolled as a doctoral student, funding is required for your entire education. The most common form of funding is through employment as a doctoral student, i.e. the department has the funds they want and can advertise for a doctoral position. There are no tuition fees at Swedish universities.
In some cases, institutions may enroll a doctoral student with other funding than through employment. In both cases, it is required that the funding is assessed as secured during the entire education and that the doctoral student will have the opportunity to pursue his or her education for at least half time (i.e. complete a four-year education towards a doctoral degree of a maximum of eight years).
As an industrial doctoral student, you are employed at, for example, a company or other university and are at the same time enrolled in a third cycle subject at LTH. The employer is thus willing to let you conduct third cycle studies during your working hours at the same time as LTH is responsible for the implementation of the education. For this to be possible, an agreement must be drawn up between the employer and LTH.
It is possible to finance an entire doctoral program with an external scholarship, but there are many rules to ensure fair conditions.
In general, the scholarship must be paid directly to the doctoral student from the financier and that there must be no requirement for work performance from the financier. The scholarship must be given either within the framework of an "assistance or capacity building program" or within the framework of certain types of formalized collaborations. The funding also needs to reach the salary level after tax for an employed doctoral student, if it does not, the department must establish an additional scholarship as a supplement.
Admitted for a doctoral or licentiate degree
In third cycle studies, there are two degree levels, doctoral degree and licentiate degree.
An entire doctoral program towards a doctoral degree comprises 4 years of full-time studies, i.e. 240 higher education credits. The education towards the doctoral degree is made up of a scientific dissertation and a course part. The dissertation part always constitutes at least half the scope, i.e. at least 120 higher education credits. If you are accepted with employment as a doctoral student, the position always refers to an education towards a doctoral degree.
It is also possible to take a licentiate degree that corresponds to 2 years of full-time studies, i.e. 120 higher education credits. The education towards the licentiate degree is made up of a scientific essay and a course part. The essay always constitutes at least half the scope, i.e. at least 60 higher education credits. Regardless of the form of financing, it is possible to take out a licentiate degree as a stage on the way to your doctoral degree. If you are enrolled with funding other than doctoral employment, it is possible to be enrolled for a licentiate degree only.
