Passion has long been championed as a key to workplace success. However, scientific studies have found mixed results: On the one hand, some studies find evidence that passionate employees tend to perform better, while other research has documented null or even negative effects on performance. What’s the root of these inconsistent findings surrounding passion? And how can we reap the benefits of passion without falling prey to its downsides? Through a series of studies with more than 1,000 employees from the U.S. and China, researchers shed light on these questions by showing that passion is associated with overconfidence in our own performance. Although this passion-driven overconfidence is not necessarily harmful — and in certain contexts, it may even be helpful — their findings suggest that managers should take steps to mitigate the potential negative consequences of the overconfidence that may go hand in hand with passion.

From business leaders to athletes to everyday employees, passion is often cited as a key ingredient in the success of high achievers. Consider Elon Musk, whose passion is undeniable. He followed this drive and went on to popularize electric cars through Tesla and reinvigorate space transportation via SpaceX.

Jim Wilson, gene therapy pioneer, departs Penn to set up new companies

J im Wilson, a leading gene therapy researcher who has persisted through the field’s ups and downs , is leaving his longtime academic home at the University of Pennsylvania to found two new companies.

Penn is spinning out much of the work of its Gene Therapy Program, where Wilson had served as director, to the two new companies. Most of the program’s employees will be offered roles at the new companies, according to a statement released Wednesday night.

One of the companies, Gemma Biotherapeutics, will aim to build advanced medicines for patients with rare diseases. The other, called Franklin Biolabs, will serve as a contract research organization for companies working on genetic medicines.

The pile of research linking bacon, hot dogs, and sausage to dementia risk grows with new study

People who regularly eat processed red meat—like bacon, hot dogs, sausage, kielbasa, salami, and bologna—may be at higher risk of developing dementia as they age, suggests preliminary new research presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference this week.

The study, which has not yet been published in a journal, examined the relationship between diet and dementia risk by tracking 130,000-plus people for up to 43 years. Over time, more than 8% of the participants developed dementia. In the study, dementia risk rose by 14% for participants who ate roughly two servings of red meat a week as compared with those who ate fewer than three servings per month.

However, consuming a serving of nuts and legumes—like beans and peas, instead of a serving of processed red meat—every day may lower dementia risk, the findings suggest. In the study, replacing a serving of processed red meat with a serving of nuts, beans, or tofu daily was connected to a 20% lower dementia risk.

“By studying people over a long period of time, we found that eating processed red meat could be a significant risk factor for dementia,” said Yuhan Li, the study’s lead author and a research assistant in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in a press release .

Health risks of ultra-processed foods

Most processed red meats are categorized as ultra-processed foods, which are created by numerous industrial processes and contain ingredients that wouldn’t typically be used in home cooking—like high-fructose corn syrup, preservatives, and artificial colors and flavors. Along with the vast majority of processed red meats, common items like chips, ice cream, and instant soups are considered ultra-processed foods, which contain high levels of refined carbohydrates and added fats.

While ultra-processed foods make up a significant chunk of many Americans’ diets—accounting for more than 55% of the calories consumed by U.S. children and adults on average—researchers have linked these products to numerous health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and some cancers and gastrointestinal diseases. In fact, research has found that ultra-processed foods are even as addictive as cigarettes and alcohol.

The saturated fat, sodium, iron, and nitrites (a type of preservative) in processed red meat specifically have been linked to a higher risk of developing certain conditions, such as stroke, chronic inflammation, increased blood pressure, and neurological disorders, studies have shown.

“Processed red meat has also been shown to raise the risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes,” Li said in the release. “It may affect the brain because it has high levels of harmful substances, such as nitrites and sodium.”

A new study spans 43 years

Li’s research was able to track subjects over decades by assessing their diets every two to four years. These assessments were based on people’s answers to questionnaires about what they were eating, specifically, how often they ate processed red meat, nuts, and legumes.

Of the 130,000 people who participated in the study, researchers found that more than 11,000 developed dementia. Among the subjects, eating an additional serving of processed red meat daily was linked to cognitive decline—which relates to the ability to understand and recall words and sentences—over time, according to researchers’ assessments.

However, consuming a serving of nuts and legumes instead of a serving of processed red meat daily was linked to less cognitive decline as participants aged, according to the research. In addition, the study did not discover a “significant association” between eating unprocessed red meat, like hamburgers, steak, and pork chops, and developing dementia.

The findings join a growing body of research from the past several years that examines the association between consuming more ultra-processed foods and cognitive decline. One study that tracked more than 72,000 adults from the U.K. ages 55 or older for a decade discovered that eating ultra-processed foods was associated with developing dementia.

Similarly, another study that involved more than 10,000 adults in Brazil found that consuming more ultra-processed foods was associated with more rapid cognitive decline.

What do the findings mean?

While studies like these have found an association between ultra-processed foods, cognitive decline, and dementia risk, they haven’t proven that these products are directly harmful to neurological health. Li’s research, although yet to be published, presents “a specific example of one way to eat healthier,” said Heather M. Snyder, vice president of medical and scientific relations at the Alzheimer’s Association.

“Eating an overall heart-healthy diet may contribute to decreasing one’s risk for cognitive decline and dementia,” the press release announcing Li’s study read. “However, there isn’t a single food or ingredient that, through rigorous scientific research, has been shown to prevent, treat, or cure Alzheimer’s or other dementia. In fact, it is unlikely that one food or ingredient will have a significant beneficial effect against a disease as complex as Alzheimer’s.”

Everyone Knows Meta Platforms Makes Money From Facebook and Instagram. But 1 Wall Street Research Firm Says 17% of the Company's Value Comes From Something Surprising.

This infrequently mentioned product is also a major driver for growth in Meta's user engagement.

Social media empire Meta Platforms ( META -1.93% ) is valued at nearly $1.2 trillion. And according to a report from investment research firm Needham, about 17% of this value -- or $203 billion -- should be attributed to a part of the business that might surprise you.

Of course, with platforms as big as Facebook, Instagram , and Whatsapp, Meta Platforms' investors can be forgiven for overlooking something somewhere. But it's surprising that Needham believes there's so much value in a part of the business that gets such little attention.

To be clear, Meta Platforms' platforms are truly massive. The company doesn't break down its users per platform anymore. But across its social platforms -- what management calls its "Family of Apps" -- it has 3.24 billion daily active people as of the first quarter of 2024. That's roughly 40% of the planet's population.

Many parts of Meta Platforms are big and important -- this much is true. But this other value driver shouldn't be overlooked.

What else could possibly be worth $200 billion?

Needham's report takes a look at short-form video platforms, such as TikTok . And increasingly popular in the short-form video space is the Reels service from Meta Platforms. Reels provides short-form video options on both Facebook and Instagram and was management's answer to TikTok a few years ago. And it's worth over $200 billion now, according to the aforementioned research firm.

How could this service be so valuable? For context, investors need to remember that almost all of Meta Platforms' revenue comes from advertising. When it comes to growing this revenue source, there are things the company can do to improve the effectiveness, placement, and frequency of ads. But all of this is predicated on user engagement -- if people aren't on the platform in the first place, it's not generating ad revenue.

As it turns out, Reels is driving engagement for Meta Platforms. On the Q1 earnings call , management said that when its users get on the Facebook and Instagram platforms, they're watching video more than 60% of the time. There are multiple ways to watch videos on these platforms -- it's not just Reels. But management is clear that Reels is driving the growth in Meta's video consumption.

The big question for investors is whether Reels can keep driving engagement growth. And there is reason to believe that it can. In April, Meta Platforms updated its video engine so that everything it has is interconnected, providing the ability for more relevant video recommendations, in theory.

Meta Platforms is also working to upgrade its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI), which management hopes will also improve the recommendation engine. And if users get better video recommendations, perhaps they'll binge-watch content just a little bit longer, giving the company a chance at higher engagement and ad revenue.

It's truly staggering to think that Meta Platforms is approaching trailing-12-month revenue of $150 billion and still growing at more than a 20% annual rate. But that's exactly what's happening, as the chart below shows.

Considering over half of the company's user engagement is from video, investors should definitely monitor trends with Reels from Meta Platforms. It does seem that people are generally moving toward the consumption of these shorter-form videos, so the demand is there. And if the company can continue to improve its system to provide better recommendations, it could keep driving engagement and consequently continue achieving an above-average growth rate. Together with a robust monetization strategy, that would be good for investors.
