Listen to Story
- Sookshmadarshini starring Nazriya Nazim, Basil Joseph released on 22nd November
- A smart thriller with a unique and interesting setup
- The film is directed by MC Jitin
Release Date: 22 Nov, 2024
Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph-starrer Sookshmadarshini brings a fresh perspective to the thriller genre, making it one of the more exciting recent releases. Directed by MC Jithin, the film explores the life of Priyadarshini (Nazriya Nazim), a small-town homemaker who becomes suspicious of her neighbour, Manuel (Basil Joseph), after his elderly mother goes missing. Unlike many thrillers that rely on clichéd police investigations, Sookshmadarshini stands apart by focusing on the protagonist's personal investigation, leading to an atmosphere of constant suspense.
The film’s slow-burning tension works in its favour, gradually drawing the audience into Priyadarshini’s world. Her curious nature, involvement in local WhatsApp groups, and growing obsession with Manuel’s mysterious life keep viewers intrigued. The narrative doesn’t rush to reveal its secrets, opting instead for a carefully constructed suspense that intensifies with each passing moment. This deliberate pacing is complemented by a strong sense of place and the portrayal of small-town life adds authenticity to the film while keeping it relatable.
Here's the trailer:
Nazriya Nazim’s performance as Priyadarshini is one of the highlights of the film. After a four-year break from Malayalam cinema, her return is marked by a deeply relatable character who is genuine, curious and determined. Basil Joseph, playing the enigmatic Manuel, complements her perfectly, with their on screen chemistry enhancing the film's suspense. Together, they make for an engaging duo whose performances add depth to the narrative.
However, while the film is engrossing overall, it does have a few minor hiccups. Some of Priyadarshini's motivations seem forced. While her curiosity is understandable, the stakes surrounding her suspicions about Manuel feel somewhat underdeveloped. As a result, certain actions come across as more plot-driven than character-driven.
For example, her decision to sneak into Manuel's house is a significant step that the character is taking. Throughout the story, Priya takes similar steps, driven mainly by her curiosity as a neighbour, with little deeper emotional connection to the situation. While her curiosity is understandable, these decisions feel more like plot devices than organic character choices. This lack of emotional grounding in her motivations dilutes the tension, especially in a tense sequence, where the action comes off as an overextension of her curiosity rather than something that emotionally justifies the risks involved.
Additionally, as the film progresses, some of the twists feel a little too convoluted, making the story appear more complicated than necessary. These narrative complications may distract some viewers, but they don’t detract from the film’s overall appeal.
On the technical side, Sookshmadarshini excels in its execution. The atmospheric background score by Christo Xavier enhances the film’s mood, and Sharan Velayudhan Nair’s cinematography works wonders in maintaining the film’s suspense. While the pacing slows down at times, the film’s second half picks up the momentum, ensuring that it remains engaging until the end. The direction by MC Jithin also deserves credit for maintaining a strong grip on the narrative, effectively building tension while keeping the audience invested in the story’s twists. Despite minor flaws in the plot, the film’s technical aspects elevate it, making it a thoroughly engaging thriller that holds its own within the genre. Sookshmadarshini review: A gripping mystery thriller with stellar performances by Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph

Sookshmadarshini (Malayalam)
- Main Cast: Basil Joseph, Nazriya Nazim, and Akhila Bhargavan
- Director: MC Jithin
- Producer: Samir Tahir, AV Anoop, Shyju Khalid
- Cinematography: Sharan Velayudhan
What does one expect when Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph come together for a film for the first time? When the film was announced, most assumed it to be a comedy, considering they both have predominantly done comedy dramas.
However, Sookshmadarshini which translates to “magnifying glass” is not just a comedy. This MC Jithin’s directorial is a mystery thriller that keeps you guessing from start to end.
Let us now see how the movie fared.

Priya, played by Nazriya Nazim lives with her husband Antony, played by Deepak Parambol, and a daughter in a town in Kerala. She has been looking for a job, as she is bored staying at home.
Meanwhile, we are introduced to Manuel, played by Basil Joseph, and his mother, as they shift to Priya’s neighbourhood. Manuel is a businessman, who owns a bakery and is quite well off, while his mother is someone who keeps to herself.
MC Jithin takes time to establish all his characters, which makes the film structurally strong.
As the story progresses, Manuel befriends everyone in the neighbourhood, except Pirya. Priya has reservations about Manuel’s character. The audience is also given hints about an impending plot twist.
One day, Manuel’s mother goes missing after a strange incident at their house. Later, Manuel tells everyone that his mother has Alzheimer’s and is found. Priya, however, believes Manuel is faking it and that he harmed his mother. But she has no proof to support her suspicions.
Can Priya with the help of her friends crack the lies of Manuel? One should watch the film to know more.
Tight script
Nazriya Nazim is the female lead. (X)
Sookshmadarshini has a tight script with no loose ends. As mentioned previously, the film takes time to establish its characters. The first half is used to make the audience familiar with Priya and Manuel and set the stage for the thriller.
Priya is a shrewd person with an investigative mind. She keeps trying to find out what is happening at Manuel’s house. Meanwhile, Manuel is a tough nut to crack. He is manipulative and maintains cordial relationships with all his neighbours including Priya’s friend Stephy.
The second half revolves around Priya, and her two friends, getting into Manuel’s house to crack the mystery. Amidst this, the audience is also treated to some hilarious moments involving Akhila Bhargavan, Nazriya Nazim and Pooja Mohanraj.
The characters of Kottayam Ramesh and Siddharth Bharathan as Manuel’s accomplices also were interesting.
The climax, and especially the way it was shot gives goosebumps. Unlike many thrillers, Sookshmadarshini gives a strong reason for the mystery. The film also doesn’t shy away from showing a same-sex relationship.
Performances
Basil Joseph plays the lead role in the movie. (X)
In-form Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph are the major strengths of this movie. Nazriya has her usual pattern at the start, but as the story progresses, her character gets more intriguing moments. Her investigation part and climax scenes are some of the key scenes showcasing her acting prowess.
Basil Joseph definitely is out of his comfort zone. This character of Manuel is different from the roles the actor had done in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jayahe (2022) and Kadina Kadoramee Andakadaham (2023). With Sookshmadarshini, Basil secures his spot in the industry.
In the comedy scenes, Akhila Bhargavan and Pooja Mohanraj as Sulu and Asma were good. Manohari Joy, as Manuel’s mother was well in the key role.
Deepak Parambol as Anthony, was a mature role for the actor. He did it without much hiccups.
Coming to the technical aspects, editing by Chaman Chacko and music by Christo Xavier of Bramayugam fame, add to the overall experience. Sharan Velayudhan’s cinematography has given a fine look for the movie which is rich in visuals.

Sookshmadarshini is a well-crafted mystery thriller with a good script that hooks the audience. Basil Joseph and Nazriya Nazim steal the show in this movie.

Sookshmadarshini review: A playful peek that turns into mind-bending mystery
24 november 2024, 03:44 pm ist, the film evokes comparisons to classics like alfred hitchcock’s ‘rear window’ and the netflix series ‘the woman in the house across the street from the girl in the window’..
Malayalam cinema continues to prove its mastery in storytelling, with 'Sookshmadarshini' adding another feather to its cap in 2024. Directed by Jithin MC and featuring Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph in pivotal roles, this suspense-filled thriller skillfully blends local sensibilities with universal themes, creating a cinematic experience that's both engaging and fresh.
Set in a semi-urban neighbourhood near Kottayam, 'Sookshmadarshini' introduces us to Priyadarshini, or Priya (Nazriya Nazim), a homemaker yearning for purpose beyond her routine life. Married to Antony (Deepak Parambol) and mother to a young daughter, Priya's curiosity knows no bounds. Her inquisitive nature leads her to observe Manuel (Basil Joseph), her enigmatic new neighbour who moves in with his ailing mother. When Manuel's mother mysteriously disappears, Priya's casual snooping escalates into a full-blown investigation, setting the stage for a riveting narrative.
In 'Sookshmadarshini,' visual storytelling takes centre stage, with windows playing an intriguing role in shaping the narrative. A circular window, vividly coated in bright colours and perched high on the wall, becomes a symbol of curiosity and mystery. Priya’s determination to peek through this window—climbing onto a chair to reach it—parallels her relentless quest to uncover the secrets in her seemingly mundane world.
What sets 'Sookshmadarshini' apart is its ability to derive tension from the ordinary. Priya’s perspective as a homemaker forms the lens through which we experience the story. From the playful exchanges in her WhatsApp group to the small-town dynamics of low compound walls and visible lives, every detail adds to the authenticity. This familiarity is juxtaposed with Manuel's guarded demeanour, creating an air of intrigue that deepens as the story unfolds.
'Sookshmadarshini' does a great job of showing Priya as a real person with flaws and instincts that shape the story. Priya's sharp intellect and resourcefulness are woven seamlessly into the story. Early on, she exposes her husband’s lie about spilled milk with nonchalant precision and retrieves her nosepin from a sink using nothing but double-sided tape. These moments highlight her keen observational skills, which later become crucial in her battle of wits with Manuel.
Nazriya Nazim, making her much-awaited return to Malayalam cinema after four years, delivers a performance that’s both lively and nuanced. Her Priya is bubbly yet determined, embodying a mix of youthful curiosity and mature resolve. Basil Joseph surprises with his portrayal of Manuel, a character layered with charm, mystery, and menace. The dynamic between Priya and Manuel is a cat-and-mouse game that keeps the audience guessing, with both actors skillfully balancing humour, tension, and suspense.
While the film evokes comparisons to classics like Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Rear Window’ and the Netflix series ‘The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window’ , it firmly grounds itself in the Malayali environment. Writers Libin TB and Athul Ramachandran infuse the script with relatable cultural elements, turning nosy neighbours and community gossip into integral plot devices. Who knew nosy neighbours could be blessings in disguise?
The screenplay is a masterclass in pacing and unpredictability. Just when you think you have the plot figured out, the story takes an unexpected turn, keeping you engrossed until the very end. Every seemingly mundane moment is later revealed to hold significance, culminating in a climax where every puzzle piece falls perfectly into place.
Sharan Velayudhan Nair’s cinematography captures the essence of the setting beautifully, while Chaman Chakko’s sharp editing ensures there’s never a dull moment. Christo Xavier’s music deserves special mention; its pulsating beats heighten the tension without overpowering the narrative. The use of sound to underscore Priya’s growing suspicions and Manuel’s cryptic behaviour adds an additional layer of depth to the storytelling.
For those seeking a suspenseful yet relatable cinematic experience, this movie is a must-watch.

Sookshmadarshini Movie Review: Intelligent writing and clever casting choices elevate this mystery thriller
Sookshmadarshini ( 3.5 / 5).
In the now viral promo videos of Sookshmadarshini , we can see Nazriya Nazim and Basil Joseph constantly trying to outsmart each other with counter-jokes and witty one-liners. The two are almost in a similar vein in the film but on a much more serious note. The narrative is driven by a thrilling cat-and-mouse game between their characters Manuel and Priyadarshini, who live a stone's throw away. Manuel is the cat here, who slyly carries out all his sneaky activities during the night. Cats are known to be fiercely territorial—Manuel is shown repeatedly shooing away a cat. In the end, the camera focuses on the same cat after what seems like its winning moment. Priya, on the other hand, is social, intelligent, and even agile enough to climb onto the second floor... just like a mouse. Oh, and the extremely sensitive sense of smelling Manuel's foul play.
Director: MC
Cast: Nazriya Nazim, Basil Joseph, Manohari Joy, Sidharth Bharathan, Akhila Bhargavan, Deepak Parambol, Pooja Mohanraj
Director MC picks a semi-urban neighbourhood to narrate this mystery tale, but with a refreshing treatment. In this friendly neighborhood, the prime focus is on Priya, who lives with her husband (Deepak Parambol) and daughter. Priya is a peculiar character, whose traits are depicted organically, without wasting much time. We first get a glimpse of her sharp brain when she nonchalantly catches her husband lying about spilling milk and later with how she retrieves her nosepin from the kitchen sink using a double tape. She is also sly and competitive, as conveyed in her introduction scene when she fabricates a fake experience certificate to secure the same job as her neighbour. These scenes are vital in sketching Priya, from whose perspective the narrative unfolds.
When Manuel and his mother (Manohari Joy) move in next door, Priya is initially excited about their new neighbours, but soon grows increasingly suspicious about him. Trust Basil to pull off a crooked guy's role. He has done that quite effectively in Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, Nunakkuzhi and Ajayante Randam Moshanam , yet manages to make Manuel stand out with able support from the writing. It's not a character whose true colours are exposed as some 'twist'. We know there's something wrong about this guy from the beginning, but the writing still keeps us guessing what he's plotting. Basil also employs his innate charm to good effect when he casually flirts with a single mother. Interestingly, the pickup line used here, "Never apologise for being a strong woman" could be later seen as a quote on another prominent character's Instagram profile. The film is rich with such details, tempting a more attentive rewatch.
The basic idea of constantly observing a suspicious neighbour seems to be borrowed from Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 film Rear Window , but the writers (Libin TB and Athul Ramachandran) have smartly adapted it to a local setting. For all the complaints about the male gaze, Sookshmadarshini is literally about the female gaze (pun intended). It's an interesting take on voyeurism. Priya is indeed a nosy neighbour, but her obsessive curiosity is for a cause here. Manuel's every next step happens under her vigilant watch, but it is also not entirely convincing how the seeds of doubt are sown so deeply in her. Though it's spelled out during a conversation with her friends, there doesn't seem to be enough reason for her to suspect him so relentlessly. But Nazriya still makes up with her inquisitive approach. Despite the character having shades of her real bubbly self, the actor is most impressive when the story turns serious, riding on her shoulders to solve the mystery. She ably brings out the character's curiosities, confusions, and importantly, the persistence to find out the truth.
Sookshmadarshini also works well with some clever casting choices. Sidharth Bharathan plays an interesting character as Manuel's partner-in-crime. While he considers himself to be some evil genius, he is clearly not and the exchanges between him and Basil are hilarious. Similarly delightful are the fun moments between the girl gang, comprising Nazriya, Akhila Bhargavan, and Pooja Mohanraj. Merin Philip also manages to make a mark, despite her character being underdeveloped.
Sookshmadarshini 's screenplay doesn't rely on instant highs but proceeds seamlessly with its focus on simple logic and negating glaring loopholes. While there's enough drama and thrills in the writing, Christo Xavier's music doesn't always let us absorb the mood organically. What happens often is his score, though apt, overpowers the narrative, suggesting something dramatic is about to happen even before we can perceive it. Interestingly, there's also a particular composition, which reminds heavily of the signature score from Drishyam . It must have been unintentional, but this familiar music fits well as it only elevates Priya's intelligence.
Backed by brilliant writing and clever casting choices, MC crafts Sookshmadarshini as a thoroughly engaging experience. What stands out is the refreshing treatment that doesn't conform to the genre formulas. With this, the director also announces himself as a talent to watch out for.

Sookshmadarshini review: Nazriya-Basil film is a fun, smartly written thriller
Sookshmadarshini (Malayalam) ( 3.5 / 5)
A window coated with bright colours, in the shape of a circle and at the top of the wall, is almost as fascinating as the images that the woman of the house sees through it, when she reaches for it, perched on a chair. The view is of the large compound of the house across her fence, small enough for her to climb over and pluck a few curry leaves from, for lunch. Nazriya’s famous wide eyes stare through the pane, as she is driven there from the kitchen window she can’t see enough from. Who knew that the simple act of looking, accompanied by the beats of thumping music, could send chills down spines and drive a pacy story forward? MC Jithin did apparently, directing a smartly-written script, putting Nazriya and Basil Joseph in the thick of it, and pulling off one helluva thriller with Sookshmadarshini (meaning microscope, naturally).
It is a cosy little neighbourhood, some way off the buzz of the city of Kochi, and old-fashioned enough for the neighbours to be all neighbourly – spending time at each other’s, exchanging confidences. Relatably, a Whatsapp group of the women in the neighbourhood is abuzz all the time, where news of the neighbourhood and preachy voice messages pop up all the time. These are breezy intros, setting the ways of life of a neighbourhood that appears torn between conventions and modernities. The proximity of the people and the outward appearances make the setting closer to the famous camaraderie of village life, while the forwardness of attitudes leans towards newer ideas.
No lengthy scenes are written to create this setting, and Chaman Chakko’s editing is tight enough to forbid distractions. As a respite to all the tension though, the scriptwriters allow doses of comedy, putting Siddharth Bharathan, an actor you don’t expect for it, primarily in charge.
Jithin wrote the script in the company of Athul Ramachandran and Libin TB, all of whom appear to be strong believers of not wasting time. The tension begins right away, as soon as Basil’s character Manuel appears with his elderly mother (Manohari Joy), who seems unwell and not talkative. You are forced to pay extra attention to the mother in what would seem like perfectly ordinary moments only because Priya (Nazriya) keeps looking at her and the music (Christo Xavier’s) keeps racing. In that way the director appears to get up from his chair and direct the audience too: note this scene, you will need it later.
Priya’s interest in the mother is necessary for the script, but not entirely natural unless you accept her as one of those overly perceptive ones who would have done well as a private eye (literally). Nazriya retains the gestures of her famous characters of the past with expressive body language, even as she attempts a deeper voice to perhaps sound mature for the role of a young mother, celebrating nine years of marriage. Deepak Parambol, playing the husband, and a little girl, their daughter, take time getting used to, since Nazriya – even in her traditional kurthas and saris – almost seems out of place in that setting. It is good writing that her character retains qualities of what is associated with younger women – jumping at good news, unafraid to act on her instincts and getting obsessed with an idea. Ageing does not automatically throw open doors inside your brain for you to push out what others label as juvenile. You are your own person.
It also allows Priya to go out of the way, in the way a regular homemaker wouldn't, to pry into what she is sure are unusual circumstances. The first time she gets a glimpse of Manuel – through the window of course – he is throwing a stone at a harmless kitten. Basil, perhaps following a rule he set for himself, bears no resemblance to his last few characters. This guy is full of charm, crookedness and a creepy sort of calm. Together, Nazriya and Basil play the basic characters you need in a mystery thriller – the pursuer and the suspicious. Only here, for a long time, you have no idea what the mystery is, and that only adds to the chills.
Then there are the co-pryers. The friendship between the women in the neighbourhood is not celebrated with song and dance but it is just lovely to watch them in action. The planning, the get-together, the advice – it is as fun as it is thrilling. Pooja Mohanraj and Akhila Bhargavan deserve special applause, for effortlessly adding to the comedy that Siddharth Bharathan unexpectedly masters in. He has only a few scenes, but those are worth vouching for. In hindsight though, they may seem like dark comedy.
You can pick a few unfitting elements from the script, lovely as it is. The introduction of Priya for one, showing a bit of slyness in character that doesn’t fit the rest of the storyline, or the explanation of Alzheimer's, or even the too-easy ending, is slightly offputting in an otherwise enjoyable thriller. But, not complaining at all.

- Kishkindha Kaandam
Directed by Dinjith Ayyathan, Kishkindha Kaandam plunges us into the dense Kallepathi reserve forest, where forest officer Ajay, played by Asif Ali, faces his worst nightmare. His son vanishes, setting off a gripping mystery that spirals deeper as his father, ex-military officer Appu Pillai (Vijayaraghavan), grapples with memory issues that hide dark secrets. This isn’t just a mystery; it’s an emotional rollercoaster that taps into the fragility of family bonds and the weight of memories.
The forest is an ideal backdrop for this haunting drama, adding a sense of claustrophobic mystery that complements the unravelling plot. With Vijayaraghavan and Asif Ali delivering deeply emotional performances, this movie is a thriller that doesn’t just entertain but gets under your skin, reminding us how memory, or the loss of it, can make or break lives.
An incredible disaster thriller by Jude Anthany Joseph, 2018 portrays Kerala’s devastating floods and showcases how courage, resilience, and the will to survive emerge from adversity. Tovino Thomas and Asif Ali lead a stellar cast, each character caught in the throes of a natural catastrophe that’s as much a metaphor for personal battles as it is a reflection of nature’s fury.
With heart-stopping moments of survival against nature’s rage, this movie is more than a thriller—it’s a tribute to humanity and the indomitable spirit of the people. This movie will keep you rooting for its characters while marvelling at the scale and intensity of its action sequences.
With Iratta, director Rohith MG Krishnan dives into the shadowy corners of human psychology. The thrill in this movie lies not just in its suspenseful plot but in Joju George’s masterful portrayal of both brothers. Each scene unfolds new layers, making you question who’s really “good” or “bad.” The film’s slow-burn tension keeps you guessing, with every twist leaving you more intrigued than the last.

- Anjaam Pathiraa
Directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas, Anjaam Pathiraa introduces criminologist Anwar Hussain (Kunchacko Boban), who’s on a mission to capture a serial killer targeting cops. The film plays out like a cat-and-mouse game, with Anwar’s investigation revealing the killer’s twisted motives and the dark secrets of his victims.
The plot is tight and leaves no room for dull moments, keeping the suspense alive till the last scene. With eerie visuals, nail-biting scenes, and Kunchacko Boban’s commendable performance, this movie is a classic psychological thriller that Malayalam cinema lovers can’t stop talking about.
The Play, directed by Anand Ekarshi, centres on a gripping and intense plot that unfolds within a theatre group. Following a disturbing incident where Anjali, the only actress in the group, is groped by one of the twelve male members, a meeting is urgently called—excluding the accused. The film dives into the discussions and moral debates within the group as they try to reach a decision on the expulsion. As tensions rise, stories unravel, suspicions flare, and buried grievances come to light, turning the situation into a tense psychological thriller.
With its layered approach and powerful performances, this movie challenges viewers to examine justice, camaraderie, and accountability within closed social circles, making it an unforgettable addition to the Malayalam thriller genre.
Directed by M. Padmakumar, Joseph is an emotionally charged thriller with Joju George as a retired cop haunted by his past. Joseph, a man with unmatched investigative skills, is forced to confront his own painful history when he investigates the mysterious death of his ex-wife. But this investigation is more than just a professional duty; it’s a reckoning with his own unresolved emotions.
With Joju George’s raw and vulnerable portrayal, this movie is both an investigation and an emotional journey, offering an experience that’s as introspective as it is thrilling. It reminds us that sometimes, it’s not the case but the people solving it who hold the real mysteries.
Jeethu Joseph’s Drishyam needs no introduction. Mohanlal’s portrayal of Georgekutty, an ordinary man who crafts an elaborate lie to protect his family, is unforgettable. This thriller isn’t just about outsmarting the police—it’s about a man doing whatever it takes to protect those he loves. When a crime turns his world upside down, Georgekutty’s cunning and resourcefulness transform him into an unexpected hero.
The film’s iconic twists, masterful direction, and Mohanlal’s charismatic performance make this movie a hallmark of Malayalam cinema. It’s suspenseful, intense, and filled with nail-biting moments that will make you want to revisit it time and again.
Another brilliant thriller from Jeethu Joseph, Memories stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as Sam Alex, a police officer struggling with personal loss and alcoholism. When a series of murders compels him to return to duty, Sam must confront both the killer and his own inner demons. The thriller is heavy on suspense but also deeply reflective, portraying how personal tragedy can affect even the strongest minds.
With Prithviraj’s nuanced performance, this movie blends crime and redemption into a story that’s as heart-wrenching as it is suspenseful. Every twist reveals a part of Sam’s past, making this film both a mystery and a character study.
These Malayalam thrillers each bring something unique to the table, be it psychological depth, suspense, or sheer intensity. They’re not just movies; they’re experiences that stay with you, giving you a mix of emotions that range from exhilaration to contemplation. So, if you’re looking for films that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat (and maybe make you question a thing or two about human nature), these thrillers are perfect for your next binge session!
