The University of Palermo was established in 1806 in Palermo, the metropolis of Sicily which is the heart of the Mediterranean Sea,  with a population of more than 650,000. Regrettably, the founding year of the University dates to 1498, when the faculties of law and medicine were established.

The foundation date of the university goes back so far that office of the current rector  is located in the primary building of the University, which was constructed in 1307. One of the most significant historical elements of Palermo is this long-standing University building.

UNIPA (the common name of the University of Palermo), a non-profit public higher educational institution, currently owns 3 campuses in addition to the main campus. These campuses are: Agrigento, Caltanissetta and Trapani.

The average temperature in February is 14 degrees in Celsius, while in August in summer the average temperature is 26 degrees. These place is also popular with seven world heritage sites in the region: Valley of Temples (Agrigento), Villa Romana del Casale (Piazza Armerina), the stunning Aeolian Islands, Val di Noto, Syracuse and Pantalica, Mount Etna and most recently, the Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalú and Monreale.

Moving from the city center to the neighborhoods of Palermo, via Ruggero VII and Libertà, you will encounter very interesting shopping areas, enriched by the presence of the two main city theaters, the Politeama Garibaldi and the Massimo, the largest opera theater in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. Built between 1875 and 1891, it can accommodate more than 1,380 visitors. The opera was designed and supervised by the great Italian architect Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile. It is considered one of the most famous operas in Italy, where you can enjoy the music and the magnificent room.

The University of Palermo offers language courses for students who wish to learn a new language. Students have a chance to study Arabic, English, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish by academic staff and professors at the University. You can also enjoy many cultural and historical events in the city, including the seven sites included into the list of UNESCO of Sicily.

As you walk through the narrow and characteristic streets of the city center, you will fully experience the baroque atmosphere and taste the unique street food of Palermo: “pani ‘ca meusa” and “panelle” (bread with fried spleen or chickpea slices), “stigghiola” (grilled meat), “arancine” (rice balls), “sfincione” (typical pizza of Palermo) are especially abundant in many historic parts of the city.

Garibaldi Square, Della Liberta and Roma Street are some of the most populated areas of the city and are often host restaurants. Students will find plenty of places to visit as the city is full of nature, history and culture. Application and Admission Requirements at the University of Palermo

Depending on the disciplines and language of the  program, there may be various requirements for international students who wish to enroll in undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral programs at the University of Palermo. In Italy, bachelor’s degree programs typically last for three years, while master’s degree programs last for two years.

Whereas only a small percentage of undergraduate classes of University of Palermo are taught in English, majority of departments providing  master’s level of education are taught in English.

The following requirements must be met in order to enroll and study at the university:

  • For undergraduate programs, it is necessary to have completed 12 years of education and to be eligible for admission to a particular university (exceeding the minimum score in the university entrance exams is a sufficient level).

El Doctorado en Diseño está profundamente integrado al Programa de Investigación en Diseño , a las Publicaciones Internacionales , al Coloquio Internacional de Investigadores en Diseño que ubican, jerarquizan y proyectan a Los doctorandos que realizan sus investigaciones en el marco de este espacio institucional valorado internacionalmente.

Diseño Curricular

La eficiente organización curricular del Doctorado en Diseño permite avanzar con la Tesis desde el primer día de clases a efectos de finalizarla en el período de cursada regular sin demoras o pérdida de tiempo.

Emprendedores Creativos

Los estudiantes del Doctorado en Diseño tienen una formación como Emprendedores Creativos para crear y gestionar, desarrollar y liderar su propio proyecto académico de investigación, de desarrollo institucional y/o consultoría internacional.

La Facultad de Diseño y Comunicación, a la que pertenece el Doctorado en Diseño , es reconocida como una exitosa plataforma de Proyección Profesional por tener la tasa más alta y de mejor calidad de empleabilidad de sus egresados en el país y la región.

Investigadores superiores en Diseño

Condiciones de ingreso.

El Doctorado está dirigido a "egresados de carreras universitarias de grado de Diseño, Arquitectura o disciplina afín, de cuatro o más años de duración, aprobadas en universidades argentinas o extranjeras reconocidas" (Reglamento Académico Art. 19) Según resolución CSU N° 38/12: "Podrían establecerse requerimientos de estudios previos particulares, los que serán indicados conjuntamente con el Plan de Estudios". La comisión de Posgrado solicita para esta primera etapa, que los ingresantes posean título de Maestría (Master o Magister) que puede presentarse como equivalencias de las asignaturas electivas del Plan de Estudios. En caso de no poseerlo, se puede obtener realizando la Maestría en Gestión del Diseño que la Universidad de Palermo dicta desde el año 2002. En el proceso de Ingreso al Doctorado cada aspirante construye su plan de doctorado y modalidad de cursado. En este proceso, de acuerdo al título de Posgrado que el aspirante tenga, el Comité de Doctorado podría aconsejar realizar cursos complementarios de carácter disciplinar y/o metodológicos. Estos cursos se incorporan en el Plan de Doctorado y no significan costos complementarios para el doctorando.

Proceso de admisión

Luego de una entrevista telefónica o vía correo electrónico con el candidato, donde se le informa las condiciones necesarias para su incorporación, formaliza la solicitud de admisión. A partir de ese primer momento el Comité de Doctorado evalúa los antecedentes académicos - profesionales del candidato y finalmente éste es admitido como doctorando con un Plan de Doctorado.

Modalidad de Cursada

• Modalidad Regular: Esta modalidad es intensiva con una duración de dos años aproximadamente. Durante el período de cursada se sugiere realizar la investigación conducente a la Tesis doctoral, que cuenta con el apoyo institucional, la posible incorporación al Programa de Investigación DC , el asesoramiento y la supervisión de un Tutor Académico. “La Tesis de Doctorado deberá desarrollarse en el período máximo de dos años a partir de la finalización del cursado del programa de Doctorado” (Reg. Art. 57). La organización de esta modalidad, más el compromiso del doctorando y la colaboración de la estructura académica de la Facultad de Diseño y Comunicación en su conjunto, permite cumplir con el objetivo de calidad, calendario y presentación de la Tesis. Esta modalidad está focalizada en satisfacer la necesidad de instituciones educativas de Argentina y América Latina de formar a sus grupos académicos a nivel de doctorado en determinados plazos. (Las instituciones interesadas pueden consultar el Programa de Colaboración Institucional). Días de cursado: de lunes a viernes, de 8 a 18:30hs., en la sede Larrea 1079. Los días sábados de 8 a 12:30hs. en la Biblioteca, sede Mario Bravo 1050. • Modalidad Personalizada: Aquellos candidatos que por diversos motivos no puedan responder a los requerimientos mínimos del plan pautado, tendrán la posibilidad de reprogramar el cursado y adaptarlo a sus posibilidades y ritmo de estudios atento a las recomendaciones del Comité. • Modalidad online o presencial, vos elegís: Cursá el Doctorado en modalidad a distancia, presencial o combinando las dos alternativas. Para ello, la Universidad cuenta con la mejor tecnología en educación y clases participativas diseñadas especialmente para el aprendizaje a distancia. Ver Plan de Estudios .

Articulación Maestría – Doctorado

Para aquellos interesados en realizar el programa de Doctorado en Diseño y aún no poseen título de Master o Magister, se les ofrece realizar el cursado de ambos programas de manera articulada. Consiste con el cursado de la Maestría en Gestión del Diseño UP y a continuación el Doctorado, con el beneficio de que la Tesis académica de Maestría constituye un corpus sustancial para la Tesis final del Doctorado.

Diploma y Título *

Se otorga un diploma, que certifica el título obtenido de "Doctor de la Universidad de Palermo en Diseño".  (Resolución Ministerial N° 1524) (*) Dictamen favorable de la Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria (CONEAU) Nº 11040/11 del día 3 de Diciembre de 2012 durante su sesión Nº 367.

En el Doctorado en Diseño se desarrollan acciones de visibilidad y proyección de las investigaciones en proceso y de las tesis finalizadas en las Publicaciones Académicas que edita la Facultad y en uno de los Congresos Internacionales que organiza.

She holds the Hughes M. and Katherine Blake Endowed Professorship in Health Psychology. Dr. Palermo serves as Vice Chair for Research for the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. At Seattle Children’s Research Institute, Dr. Palermo serves as Interim Director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development. Dr. Palermo completed her undergraduate training at UCLA in Psychology and her PhD at Case Western Reserve University in Clinical Psychology. She completed residency training at Ohio State University followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric pain management at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Palermo has been in Seattle since 2010 where she directs the Pediatric Pain & Sleep Innovations Lab. The focus of her research is on behavioral, psychosocial and family factors that affect pain experiences, the interrelationship of sleep and pain, and innovative psychological treatments for managing and preventing chronic pain. Currently, Dr. Palermo serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pain. Dr. Palermo has developed and evaluated several internet and mobile applications to deliver cognitive-behavioral interventions for chronic pain, has published over 290 articles, and has published two books on cognitive-behavioral therapy. She is active in training clinician-scientists at the postdoctoral and faculty level and directs the T32 postdoctoral training program in anesthesiology research at the University of Washington.

Dr. See Wan Tham is an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She is a pediatric anesthesiologist and pain physician and provides clinical services as an anesthesiologist and in the multidisciplinary pain management clinic at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She received her MB BS at the University of Sydney, Australia in 2001 followed by anesthesiology residency at the State University of New York (Syracuse). She then completed pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Her research focus is on identifying the mechanisms underlying the relationship between pain and sleep in pediatric populations with chronic pain conditions. Her research is funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to understand the longitudinal trajectories of sleep disturbances and autonomic function in children and adolescents with chronic abdominal pain.

Dr. Caitlin Murray is an assistant professor and a pediatric psychologist in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She provides clinical services in the pain management clinic at Seattle Children’s Hospital. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from Loyola University Chicago and completed her predoctoral internship training in pediatric psychology at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, Ohio). Her research focuses on elucidating unique health and developmental issues facing young adults with chronic painful conditions, with the long-term goal of creating tailored psychological interventions that target outcomes of highest importance and interest to this population.

Dr. Rui Li is a pain epidemiologist and research assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She received her bachelor's degree in preventive medicine (2011-2016) from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and School of Public Health, followed by a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry (2016-2021). She then completed postdoctoral training in the Pediatric Pain & Sleep Innovations Lab at Seattle Children’s Research Institute (2021-2024), where she studied chronic pain assessment and prevention in adolescents alongside a team of pediatric pain researchers. Dr. Li’s research aims to integrate developmental aspects and sex and gender-specific factors to prevent the occurrence and reduce the public health impact of chronic pain. With a keen interest in addressing pain in women and children, her long-term goal is to prevent the development of chronic pain in young people and reduce sex and gender disparities in pain across the lifespan.

Bethany Pester is an acting assistant professor and pain psychologist in the UW Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. She earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Wayne State University and completed a predoctoral clinical internship at the Charleston Consortium Internship Program with a focus on behavioral medicine. She recently completed a 2-year postdoctoral research fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, where she developed, conducted, and tested various nonpharmacological interventions for chronic pain and post-surgical pain. During her training, she collaborated with interdisciplinary teams within the Harvard Medical System, Medical University of South Carolina, and academic medical centers across Michigan to study biopsychosocial approaches to understand, treat, and prevent chronic pain. For example, some of her research explored the influence of romantic partners and social media on pain treatment outcomes. Bethany aspires to lead interdisciplinary teams to effectively and compassionately assess and treat people with acute and chronic pain and to advance research to better understand these complex conditions and translate discoveries into effective personalized treatments for children, adolescents, and adults.

Dr. Teresa Ward is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine with an adjunct appointment in Nursing. She earned her undergraduate degree in Nursing at Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales, a Master of Science in Nursing at Drexel University, and a PhD at University of California, San Francisco. She completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in the School of Nursing at the University of Washington. Teresa's research focuses on sleep health and tailored interventions that integrate technology, behavior change, and shared-management strategies for children, adolescents, and their caregivers to promote sleep and improve health and wellbeing. As a nurse scientist, Teresa's research interests grew from her clinical practice as a nurse practitioner in a pediatric pulmonary and sleep disorders center where she managed behavioral and medical sleep problems. Teresa and her interdisciplinary team partner with children, adolescents, and their families in the design and development of sleep interventions.

Dr. Daron Vandeleur is a T32 fellow and pediatric chronic pain physician in the UW Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine/Seattle Children’s Research Institute under the mentorship of Dr. Tonya Palermo. She completed both her undergraduate training (in neurobiology and global health) and medical training at the University of Washington. Her pediatric residency was completed at University of California San Francisco and chronic pain fellowship at the University of Washington. She is motivated by the patients she sees in clinic to improve and expand access to pain care. Her research includes understanding the sociocultural context of pediatric chronic pain, increasing knowledge of commonly used pain treatments, improving the transition from pediatric to adult pain care, and expanding access to pain care through innovative methods such as mobile health and community-delivered interventions.

Dr. Andrew Rogers is a T32 postdoctoral fellow and clinical psychologist in the UW Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine/Seattle Children’s Research Institute under the mentorship of Dr. Tonya Palermo. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Houston and completed his pre-doctoral internship at the University of Washington Medical Center/Fred Hutch Cancer Center. His research focuses on identifying psychosocial vulnerabilities to chronically painful medical conditions and substance use, with a focus on pain and opioid use among adolescents and young adults with cancer. The long-term goal of his research is to develop personalized cognitive-behavioral interventions to improve pain management and reduce opioid-related negative consequences for vulnerable medical populations.
