The Spread of Islam

  • The “Rightly Guided” Caliphs -leaders
  • Used the Qur’an and Muhammad's example
  • Abu-Bakr (Muhammad’s father-in-law)
  • Uthman (assassinated)
  • Ali (Muhammad’s son-in-law)
  • By 750 the Muslim empire stretched from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indus River

Reasons for Success

  • Armies were disciplined and expertly commanded
  • Weak empires: Byzantine and Persian
  • Persecuted peoples welcomed them
  • Economic benefit for those who became Muslim, less taxes
  • Tolerance was shown to Christians and Jews
  • Could play important roles such as officials, scholars, and bureaucrats in the Muslim state

Internal Conflict Creates a Crisis

  • Ali was assassinated
  • A family known as the Umayyads came to power
  • Moved the capital from Mecca to Damascus
  • Too concerned with worldly affairs and lost touch with their religion
  • Sunni and Shiite split
  • Shiite, the party of Ali, lead by Hussein, son of Ali.
  • Sunni , follow Muhammad’s example.
  • Rebel groups overthrew the Umayyad
  • Law, religious and political: sharia

The Abbasid Caliphate

  • Came to power in 750
  • Ruthlessly murdered remaining members of the Umayyad family
  • Moved capital from Damascus to Baghdad
  • Developed a strong bureaucracy : treasury, department for the army, diplomats
  • To support the bureaucracy the Abbasids taxed land, imports, and exports and non-Muslims wealth

Rival Groups Divide Muslim Lands

  • Abbasids lasted from 750-1258
  • Independent Muslim states sprang up
  • Fatimid Dynasty in north Africa and spread to Baghdad
  • Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean linked Muslims into a world system of trade by sea
  • Silk Roads of China to Europe
  • Single currency: Abbasid dinar
  • Created letters of credit called sakk , pronounced “check”
  • Attracted many poets, philosophers, scientists and doctors
