Writer’s block: nine tips to overcome it when you write your thesis

You know what you want to write, but you’re incapable to write? The page remains blank? Nothing to worry about. This is a writer’s block. Writer’s block is normal. It belongs to the writing process. Specially when you write such challenging text such as a paper or your thesis. This paper explains how to deal with it.

Actually, you know exactly what you want to write, but you just cannot start.

Perhaps you try a first sentence, but you delete it immediately…

And you try another one.

Again you delete it… and so on.

The screen remains blank.

The page, bare.

The situation seems insurmountable.

Nearly everybody has struggled with writer’s block at one time or another.

Nearly every writer has experienced how dreadful it is.

Even the most experienced authors.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES FOR WRITER’S BLOCK?

The most common causes for writer’s block among PhD candidates are:

  • Fear: e.g. fear of critique, of one’s own ideas, of the reader, of failing, of success.
  • Perfectionism: the text is never good enough; it needs to be rewritten and improved again – and never gets finished.
  • Delusions of grandeur:  My PHD will save the world!
  • The environment:  e.g. financial problems, conflicts, uncomfortable working space.
  • The targeted reader: e.g. a professor who intimidates you, the anonymous mass of readers.
  • The topic:  e.g. it is  boring, makes you angry, or you feel so passionate about it that you cannot think calmly.
  • The inner critic: an inner voice which denigrates what you do.
  • Isolation: being alone in front of your blank screen, facing your fears and constantly hearing your inner critic only worsens the problem. It does not help.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IN CASE OF  WRITER’S BLOCK ?

  • Start with the easiest part of your text. You will progress quickly and get motivated to continue.
  • Brainstorm your topic before writing your first draft: It is easier to structure your thoughts when you can see them in black and white.
  • Change the tool: If you cannot write with the computer, try with a pencil or talk on a Dictaphone.
  • Change the location: If you cannot work in the office, try in the kitchen, in a pub, or in a park.
  • Address your text to a friend: by targeting this reader you will be able to forget the readers who are blocking you.
  • Tell a friend what you want to write about: Sometimes talking is easier than writing.
  • Be aware that a good text is the result of many revisions: Do not try to write it perfectly the first time.
  • Seek help: Don’t spend too much time staring at your empty Talking with other people often helps  you recover self-confidence and overcome a block.
  • Join a writing group: This is a group of PhD candidates sharing the same aim (to finish their thesis), same problems and solutions. In such a group you can ask for help, ask for feedback while helping others and giving feedback as well, which will surely empower you!

In any case, remember that writer’s block is normal. It  belongs to the writing process. It is nothing to worry about, and no reason to question your intelligence.

Most writers experience writer’s block at some point in their life, at various stages of the writing process. Often a solution can be found by speaking with your instructor (if you are a student) or a writing tutor. But there are ways to combat writer’s block on your own, too! When you’re having trouble figuring out what to write next, consider these common types of writer’s block and try the strategies that sound most promising.

If you're having trouble finding a starting place for the assignment...

  • Brainstorm topics that are interesting to you. Use the invention strategies suggested by a tutor or teacher to generate questions or thoughts that serve as useful starting places.
  • Write down all the primary ideas you'd like to express and then fill in each with the smaller ideas that make up each primary idea. This can easily be converted into an outline .
  • If your paper involves conducting research, you can look for places where you disagree with another thinker’s claim or feel more work needs to be done. Identifying gaps or conflicts in the existing conversation around a topic is often a great starting place.

Example: You’ve been asked to analyze a television commercial. You remember three commercials that you found interesting and re-watch them, taking notes on details that stand out to you. You freewrite for five minutes on each of the three commercials, and discover that you have much more to say about one than the others. You focus on that one, expanding your freewrite into the an outline for the entire essay.

If you have a topic and an outline, but can’t think of an interesting beginning…

  • After the paper is completely drafted, you can get all the sections in the correct order and read it start-to-finish to ensure that transitions are smooth.

Example: You have to complete a lab report and hate writing the “Introduction” section. In order to complete the project on time, you overcome your anxiety about writing that section by first writing the “Materials,” “Method,” and “Results” sections. You write the “Introduction” last, reorder, and revise holistically.

If you’ve chosen or been assigned a topic that bores you…

  • If you’ve chosen a common topic just because you thought it would be easy to write on, reconsider: it’s easiest to write about something in which you have a personal interest.
  • If you can’t change the major scope or goal of the assignment, try to understand why you’re being asked to write it. What knowledge will you gain from completing the assignment? What skills will you be able to practice? Who would benefit from reading my finished product, and how would that positively change that community?

Example: You work for your campus newspaper and have been assigned to write an article on an upcoming career fair. Although at first your editor asks you to simply inform students of what companies will be represented at the event, you find that you’re much more interested in profiling a certain company that’s new to the fair. You talk to your editor and get permission to write the article that engages you more.

Example: The same scenario as above, but your editor tells you that you have to write the original, more general article. Although it’s boring to you, you reflect that you’ll gain practice presenting a mass of information in concise language, certainly a useful skill for a journalist. Additionally, there are thousands of students on campus who would benefit from the information your article will cover. This motivates you to write the article.

If you don’t understand the assignment…

  • The better you can articulate the source of confusion, the more help others can give you.

Example: Your composition instructor has asked you to write a Digital Literacy Narrative. The assignment sheet provides a definition of “digital literacy,” and you have some class notes that further clarify the concept. But after reviewing these materials, you’re still not certain if your instructor would allow you to write about how you learned to use different coffee-making technologies, as they aren’t traditionally considered digital devices. You go to your instructor’s office hours to ask if this topic would be acceptable, taking your annotated assignment sheet and class notes with you.

If you’re worried that you’ll write the wrong thing…

  • Remember that the first draft is not the final draft. If you’re not sure that an argument will pan out, just start writing it and see where it takes you. You can always delete paragraphs that don’t work out later, but the best insights often come from pushing yourself into uncertain territory—if you never feel unsure about your claims, you’re probably just reproducing existing findings!
  • If you’re worried that a small detail is incorrect, that’s okay in the draft phase. Rather than spending a lot of time checking every small detail as you go, just leave a note to yourself to check your sources later. Or, leave the troublesome paragraph for later and work on a section that you’re more confident writing about.

Example: You’re writing a paper on King Henry VIII and can’t remember off the top of your head whether he beheaded two or three of his wives. The answer to this question wouldn’t change your major argument either way, so you decide it’s not important to look up right now. You write “two,” highlight it, and leave a note to yourself to check this minor supporting fact against your research notes later.

If you’re worried that your sentences aren’t polished enough…

  • Remember, again, that the first draft is not the final draft. The sooner you get some words on the page, the more time you’ll have to edit your prose for clarity and style later. Complete an entire draft before you start editing on the sentence level.
  • If you find yourself consistently obsessing over individual sentences as you go, try dimming or covering your laptop or computer monitor’s screen so that you can’t see what you’re typing. You can also try writing in a notebook and typing up your work later.
  • Consciously stop any non-productive comments running through your head by replacing them with productive ones. Rather than labeling yourself a “bad writer,” think about what parts of the writing process you excel at (idea generation, conclusions, sentence style, etc.) and plan to allot more time for the steps that take you longer.

Example: You’re writing a paper on the effects of all-nighters on college student’s health. You can’t think of the word “deleterious.” After a few seconds of futilely scanning your brain for it, you write “super harmful,” knowing that you can find the more professional word later.

If you’re so stressed out that you can’t seem to put a word on the page…

  • Take a short break! If you’re close to a deadline and worried about losing track of time, then set a timer for ten or fifteen minutes and use that short window to relax before getting back to work. Stretch, move away from your desk, and don’t neglect your sleeping and eating schedule. It’s much harder to write if you’re sleep-deprived or dehydrated.
  • If you have several days left before your deadline, break the assignment into manageable parts. Set measurable writing goals for yourself, like writing without interruption for thirty minutes every day, or writing a certain number of words by a given deadline.
  • Finally, ask for help! Writing is most stressful when you’re doing it by yourself for a long period of time. Asking a tutor or a friend to talk through your ideas can help you get some perspective on the assignment, and remind you that it’s nothing to be anxious about.

Example: You have a week before an important job application is due and you’re anxious that the search committee will dislike your cover letter before you’ve even written it. Since you still have plenty of time before the deadline, you plan to work on it for just thirty minutes every day. You talk to a friend who helps you make a list of reasons why you’re qualified for this job, and you stick to your writing schedule.

If you’re easily distracted when you open your computer to write…

  • Try temporarily disabling your internet access. Take your laptop to a space that doesn’t have internet access. Draft by hand in a notebook and type up your work later. Or, simply turn your computer’s wifi detector off, or put your document into full-screen or “Focus” mode: these obstacles are easy to overcome, but the time it takes to make the few extra clicks to open an internet browser is sometimes enough to stop yourself.
  • You can also try setting a timer forcing yourself to do nothing but write for a short period of time. Even a ten-minute focused writing session can help you break through initial writer’s block and build momentum on your project.

Example: You start to work on your paper, and after writing one sentence feel the impulse to watch just one YouTube video. However, as you have wisely decided to take your computer to the house of a friend who doesn’t have internet, your browser gives you a frowny face and an error message. You return to your paper and keep writing.

Set a manageable target for yourself. Some scholars prefer to work on a time basis. For those of you, my suggestion is, to try to write for 2 hours per day. Ie., 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening or frame a suitable schedule that works best for you and stick to it.

Some scholars prefer to have several page counts. For those of you, fix a target to complete 1 page per day. The key is you need to be consistent. The next day you need to have the motivation to write for 1 hour or 1 page, or whatever target you have set for yourself. Don’t worry about the format or the style.

It is easier to edit than to start from scratch. So, just keep the words flowing and avoid skipping even one day. If you skip, then the next day will be even harder.

In my case, I did all my writing work in my University Library, where I was able to think and write peacefully without any disturbance and distractions. So, you can also try to find a place in your University Library for writing your research paper or thesis.

I’m telling you; you can realize the magic. Very quickly you will start to associate this place with writing. Your thoughts and ideas will automatically turn into your research paper or thesis.

  • Stimulate creativity : A change of scenery can inspire fresh ideas and perspectives.

  • Boost productivity : A new setting can energize your writing session and help you stay focused.

Some ideas for changing your environment include:

  • Writing in a different room or location in your home

  • Even just rearranging your writing space or desk

6. Different writing techniques

You can randomly make notes on it and from that you can develop your writing.

Writing a Paper: Writer's Block

Writing is a process, not a singular event. It is rarely an automatic occurrence and requires diligence, creativity, and practice. If you feel lost in the process of research, take a look at our strategies for critical reading and note taking. If you are stuck, here are tips for helping you put words onto the page.

Before you begin writing, take 20 min to construct a thesis statement with some of our prewriting strategies. Taking the time to prepare will give you direction and focus. A blank page does not mean that you are searching for the right word or words to begin your essay; it often means that you have no plan. As a scholarly writer, you should show up to your paper or computer full of information you have found in your research. Your goal is to compile a wide and deep knowledge base from which your own ideas will flow.

Find a Suitable Environment

Turn off your internal editor, write nonstop for a set period.

Find a timer or stopwatch, and set it for 1 min. Then, like a sprinter, type or hand-write nonstop until the time is up. Even if you type the letter A over and over again, you are still typing something! You are still defeating the blank page. Next, set the timer for 2 min, then 5 min, and repeat the process, with 1-min breaks in between. Soon enough, you will be surprised by what you see on the page!

Set Realistic Goals

Sometimes the blank pages in front of you can be incredibly intimidating—especially if you know that you are required to fill 25 of them. Rather than tackling the entire paper in one sitting, set goals for yourself. Setting goals will help you to work at a reasonable pace and form the paper in increments and pieces. Set time goals, such as these:

  • I will freewrite for 5 min.
  • I will work on the body paragraphs for 2 hr today.
  • I will complete my outline by Friday.
  • I will finalize my thesis statement by 3 p.m. today.

Hold yourself accountable to your goals.

Giving yourself a break (whether for 10 min, an hour, a day or two) will help clear your mind and make your words appear fresh on the page. Some ideas need time to develop without conscious thought—not all time spent away from the computer is unproductive time!

Change Perspective

Bounce ideas off classmates, friends, or family members.  Ask general questions to people who are familiar with your topic. What seems important to them? What background, terms, or other ideas will they need to know in order to understand your message? Do they disagree with your argument or the points you make? If so, why?

Summarize your own work.  In the margins of your paper (or using comment bubbles), write a one-sentence summary of the purpose of each paragraph. Review your summaries to get a clearer idea of your direction, the overall flow of the paper, and how far you still need to go.

Take another look. Ask yourself a few questions:

  • Is this information necessary?
  • Does it add to my argument?
  • What message am I trying to convey?
  • Are these ideas contributing to that message?
  • What ideas could I be missing?

When in doubt, read more on your topic—it is never a bad idea to go back to your sources and expand your knowledge when you are trying to work your way out of writer’s block.

Blast through writer's block

If you're struggling with writer's block as you wrestle with your dissertation or a grant application, would it help to know that many psychologists believe the condition doesn't exist?

Psychologist Steven Pritzker, PhD, co-editor of "The Encyclopedia of Creativity" (2011) and a former TV show writer, says that what's known as writer's block is an "artificial construct that basically justifies a discipline problem. A commitment to a regular work schedule will help you overcome barriers like perfectionism, procrastination and unrealistic expectations."

For many students, though, writing is not easy. In his 2007 book, "How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing," Paul Silvia, PhD, associate professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, likens the tedious and occasionally agonizing process to the "grim business" of fixing a sewer or running a mortuary. The panic and frustration writers feel looking at a blank page with a deadline looming doesn't help, especially if you convince yourself you're creatively blocked.

"Naming something gives it object power," Silvia says. "People can overthink themselves into deep dark corners, and writer's block is a good example of that."

The struggle isn't, of course, just for graduate students. Many seasoned psychologists have a trove of unpublished research lurking in their computers waiting to be crafted into publishable articles. Silvia is part of a humorously titled "agraphia group" in his department that meets weekly in a coffee shop to share goals and spur each other on.

Here are some strategies that he and others use to write regularly and well.

Set a writing schedule

Many experts say scheduling time to write is the best way to be prolific; Silvia says it's the only way. Robert Boice, PhD, a psychologist who compared regular, spontaneous and emergency writing for his 1990 book "Professors as Writers: A Self-Help Guide to Productive Writing" found that regular writers produced more work.

How much time is up to you, but Silvia says four hours per week should allow for a good amount of output. Pick a time when you're likely to be mentally acute and observe it with the same dedication you put toward attending class, he advises. "If someone tries to interrupt your writing time, come up with a beige lie, like a work meeting or visit to an allergist. Put it on your calendar so colleagues can see you're busy."

Your writing may improve with practice, too. According to Ronald Kellogg, PhD, a psychology professor at Saint Louis University and author of "The Psychology of Writing" (1994), regular writing practice may help reduce writing's demands on working memory, freeing experienced writers to create and revise more nuanced prose ( Journal of Writing Research , 2008). Boice's study found that regular writers also had more new ideas.

Many psychologists accept the theory that the creative process has four stages: preparation, incubation, illumination and verification. Note the first stage. If you can't figure out what to say, it may be your brain telling you to do more research, Silvia says. A strong outline can help organize your thinking on how to tackle a piece, though many people don't outline anymore, thinking "it's like cursive writing, something your teacher forced you to do in grade school," he says.

Incubate inspiration

What's referred to as writer's block is waiting for the third phase of creativity: inspiration, says Oshin Vartanian, PhD, editor of the 2013 book "Neuroscience of Creativity." If you're stuck on something, give it a rest for a day or two. A 2014 review in Frontiers of Human Neuroscience by Simone Ritter, PhD, from Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, found that even when we consciously take a break from a project, the brain is still tinkering with it. Sleeping may also help consolidate ideas and associations we've gathered during the day. "The problem is still percolating unconsciously in your mind. Incubation really helps creative insights," Vartanian says.

Just get it down

Put something, anything down to get ideas flowing, even if it's a flow chart with sticky notes. Pritzker often writes in freehand. James C. Kaufman, PhD, co-author of "The Psychology of Creative Writing" (2009) and a professor of educational psychology at the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut, starts with a title page or a very basic outline.

"It's easier to edit than create," he says. "To generate from scratch seems harder than building on what's out there."

In fact, Kaufman says, based on psychologist Joy Paul Guilford's theory of creative problem solving, writing and editing are likely separate mind processes. Writing involves divergent thinking — generating ideas — and editing is convergent thinking, or evaluating ideas. Therefore, your work will go more smoothly if you write for one session and edit in another, rather than stopping after each sentence. Learning to edit will also make you more efficient. For tips on polishing prose, many writing professionals recommend William Zinsser's book "On Writing Well," now in its 30th anniversary edition.

Find your sweet spot

If you work best standing up, or in a coffee shop or park, go for it. "You need to find the environment and circumstance where you write best, and when you find that, embrace it," says Pritzker, who is also a professor of psychology at Saybrook University. "Pretty soon it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy."

Taking a walk first may boost your creativity, according to a series of experiments by Marily Oppezzo, PhD, of Santa Clara University and Daniel Schwartz, PhD, of Stanford University in the Journal of Experimental Psychology  (PDF, 144KB) (2014). The researchers found that people had higher scores on tests of divergent thinking while walking, an effect that lasted even after they sat down.

Accept that criticism happens

The tough editing and rejections you'll inevitably receive throughout your career can lead to what Kaufman cites as "creative mortification" and stifling self-doubt. Prevent that fear of failure by sharing your drafts with trusted peers or an advisor you communicate with easily, Kaufman suggests. "If you never ask for or get feedback, you lose connection with reality and end up holding [your writing] up for a major potential doom-and-gloom judgment."

Also, remember, no piece of writing is perfect, so don't let that get in the way of your writing. Research by Simon Sherry, PhD, of Dalhousie University in Canada, and colleagues, found that psychology professors whose answers indicated they were more perfectionistic published less often and in journals of lesser impact ( Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science , 2010).

To help overcome the paralyzing sense of finality that comes with letting a draft go, Silvia says, remember that you'll get another crack at it after your advisor and reviewers see it.

Reward yourself

Set goals for each writing session, like writing a certain number of words or revising a draft, and reward yourself for completing them, perhaps with fancy coffee or a few minutes on Twitter. Some writers set word count goals. Silvia tracks his progress on a spreadsheet. As a student, Kaufman would not allow himself to brush his teeth, shower or leave his room before finishing a writing task. These days, he simply stays in his office until he achieves a writing goal he's set for the day, whether it is completing the draft of a paper or answering all of his email.

Make it personal

Finding an assignment tedious? Try injecting a personal interest in the piece, Kaufman suggests. "I tend to insert references to things I like, like baseball, theater or pop culture," he says. If you really can't find anything intrinsically interesting in it, focus on the larger picture, such as why you're doing this work — perhaps for a degree, for funding or to be published.

Unfortunately, the search for perfection – the perfect words in the perfect order to achieve the perfect form of expression – is often responsible for writer’s block, and the more formal and important the writing happens to be, the more difficult it is to let ideas flow in written text. For students who are working on a thesis or dissertation, that document is usually the most formal and significant piece of writing they have yet tackled, a situation that can increase the chances of experiencing writer’s block even if you have never encountered this problem before.

Fortunately, you need not and should not think of everything you have to write for your thesis or dissertation in such formal terms. In fact, some of the text you produce will never be seen by anybody but yourself, a reassuring thought that tends to render that writing less daunting. Jotting down your ideas about your research is a perfect example, and you can freely develop those ideas to see how they work out in text without the need to polish, prove, perfect or share them. Adding your own critical and reflective thoughts as you take notes from the sources you plan to use to support your research also provides an opportunity for spontaneous writing, and so does recording early analyses of the results of any tests or trials you conduct as part of your research. Indeed, the feedback of your supervisor and other mentors will often necessitate changes, so a strategy that prioritises the process of writing and sacrifices the ideal of perfection in order to enable the progress of your work can be extremely effective. Such an approach should not encourage you to ignore essential aspects of your writing, but it can stop you from worrying about every little detail at too early a stage and therefore allow you to move ahead with your work.

Remember (without panicking) that worrying about not writing will not solve the problem. It is, in fact, as counterproductive as worrying about not sleeping when suffering from insomnia. What is a writer’s block?

The inability to begin or continue writing, one of the most dreaded parts of a thesis writing process. There is little worse than staring at a screen not knowing how to start or what to write next. Writer’s block as a condition does not actually exist, rather, it is a symptom of something else. Writer’s block could have several (or multiple) causes:

  • The sense of failure You are afraid that what you write won’t be good enough, so you avoid writing at all. Or you are afraid of your supervisor’s disapproval.
  • Understanding of the topic Writing a thesis requires both a broad and detailed understanding of the research topic. Writer’s block may be a sign that you have not assimilated the material well enough.
  • Distractions You may not be able to focus on your thesis writing when you are in a bad mood, or when you feel angry, pressured or stressed.
  • Exhaustion Endless hours sitting in front of a computer can be exhausting. You may simply be tired or burnt out

A writer’s block may, of course, be an indicator of a flaw in the system itself, i.e. not just in the writing task but in the writing process as a whole: ‘Impatience is the single most important predictor of writing blocks’ (Boice 1994: 28).

Once you’ve got an idea of what you want to say, try to create a visual representation. You can draw a concept map to show how your ideas are related. Verbalise your thoughts

We are often more comfortable expressing ourselves verbally than through writing, so use this to your advantage. Talk your ideas out with a friend or family member. This can help you structure your ideas and provide new insights on the topic.

(temporarily) Forget about academic language

People very often have difficulty writing, because they can’t seem to translate the ideas in their head into the appropriate academic language. Try to ignore the language and pretend you’re writing to your friend. Once your thoughts are down on paper, you can always revise them in an academic format.

Find your rhythm

Take advantage of your body’s natural rhythms. Schedule your writing for peak periods. For example, if you work best in the morning, then make sure that your mornings are devoted to writing and nothing else. Once you have determined and set your schedule, maintain it consistently.

See writing as a process

Accept that you will go through a series of revisions. Writing is a process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing. Accept that everything you write is not going to be, nor should it be, perfect. By focusing on your writing instead of the finished product, you can avoid getting caught up in the quest for perfection.

Add thinking time

Use waiting time (e.g., walking to class, waiting in line) to think about what you have to do in this chapter and how you want to continue. You’ll be surprised how much this extra thinking time can help. And make sure to take (active) breaks during your writing sessions. This can also help you gather your thoughts, develop your ideas and see things in a new light.

Find your spot

Have a certain place to work on your thesis that is the most productive for you. Some students work better at the library than they do at home. Some students want a quiet room while others want television or music on while working. Try to figure out what works best for you, and dedicate a space to writing your thesis.

Flip the writing order around

Don’t waste too much time on finding the perfect opening sentence for your thesis. Just start with the core of your writing: some background information and literature review, and then off to your own contributions. Once these thoughts are out there, it is much easier to write an introduction and conclusion that embody the main ideas of your piece.

Learn from examples

There is nothing wrong with being inspired by a great paper or a very clear thesis. When someone out there has a good and structured setting, it is an ideal opportunity to learn from it and use it as a basis for your own writing. Good examples can transform your final product. 

Let the ideas flow

Try not to correct yourself and reread too much while you are typing out your ideas. This will only slow you down. Emptying your head first helps to let the ideas flow in your writing. You’ll be proofreading anyway later on, so you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to correct and improve every sentence. However, having an entire part written will help you keep an eye on what really matters: the flow of the story, not a collection of perfectly written sentences.

Get support

Seek help early! Sometimes simply talking through a problem can help you find a solution. Pick people whom you know will be sympathetic, will listen and encourage you. Contact details can be found here .

While it’s great to have a devoted space to develop your academic writing skills, a quiet corner at home works just as well if you don’t have this option.

Don’t try to tackle everything in one go

Writing a research paper, especially one based on complex data, takes time, so pace yourself. Avoid trying to tackle everything at once. Plan to work on different sections of the paper at a time; this will allow you to focus as each section needs to be written and dealt with differently. Breaking your writing into smaller chunks helps in overcoming writer’s block and can eventually hone your academic writing skills so the process isn’t so daunting anymore.

Move between writing and editing

Writing your PhD thesis is the most rewarding accomplishment of your education. It’s what allows you to call yourself “Doctor”.

One problem: it’s hundreds of pages long and writing anything of that length can feel like climbing a mountain, even if you’ve written papers for your coursework. You promise yourself you’ll get started next week. Or you enjoy a few productive weeks and then you can’t seem to keep going.

Then the deadline grows shorter. You start to worry, “I’m so far behind. Can I ever catch up? I’m a good student. So why haven’t I been more productive?”

What’s causing the delay is nothing other than PhD writers’ block — something every professional writer (and yes, every professor) has experienced. So how are they still churning out articles and books at a prolific rate and you can’t get past five pages?

The difference is, they don’t stop writing. They’ve learned a few ways to trick their writers’ block into a burst of creativity.

Below we present 7 ways to beat writers’ block and become a highly productive writer. You won’t just finish your dissertation on time. Your life will become less stressed and you’ll have plenty of time to get everything done.

1. write every day.

Some people prefer to work according to a set time frame. They’ll write for 30 or 45 minutes each day.

Others prefer to count words,   setting the bar as low as 300-500 . That’s the length of a long-ish email to a good friend.  Once you’ve written your 500 words you get to stop, whether you need fifteen minutes or a whole hour.

The key is, you can keep going as long as you like. But the next day you still have to write 30 minutes or 300 new words, or whatever target you have set yourself.

Don’t worry about form or style. It’s much easier to edit than to start from scratch. Just keep the words flowing and avoid skipping even one day. When you do, the next day will be even harder.

2. Can’t figure out what to write? 

Imagine you’re typing an email to a good friend. Write about why you’re not writing, such as: 


“I’ve got these five variables in my model. How I will measure X1, X2, X4 and X5. X3 is a challenge. How can I figure out how to measure X3? Ask my advisor? Research to see what others have done?” 

Let’s face it: you know what your dissertation’s going to be about. What’s scary is putting it into a form you can send to your advisor.  

So start with this chatty format. You might look up two hours later to find your coffee has gotten cold and you’ve drafted the entire proposal — or chapter — in one sitting. You won’t be the first.

3. Find your writing nook

Find a place where you can write, you’re free from distractions and where you aren’t tempted to do anything else. 

Very quickly you’ll start to associate this place with writing. Your thoughts will automatically turn to your dissertation and you’ll be able to jump right in. 

If you’re assigned to share an office with one or two other students, you’ll probably find that’s not a great place to write. You can’t control distractions. If you or your office mates also serve as teaching assistants, you may also get students showing up at all hours. 

Some doctoral students set up a home office, even if it’s a corner of their living room or kitchen table. Others actually find a home in the local coffee shop. Some get assigned to a library carrel; you’re not alone but nobody’s allowed to talk.

A few graduate students join   co-working spaces   — places where you rent a desk by the day or month. You’ll need to shop around for a co-working space that fits your style and budget. A big advantage of this approach is that everyone in the room works really hard. You’ll feel social pressure to keep working. Best of all, the other members understand if you’re too busy to talk. You feel more like a grown-up with a job, so you’re likely to take the whole thing much more seriously.

5. Build in some down time

When I was writing my dissertation, I was teaching full-time at a state university. I would teach, deal with students and enjoy some downtime. In the evening I’d go to my office and work on my dissertation for three or four hours, almost every night. 

The toughest part was getting home after midnight in a college town: the campus police would escort me to my car and every so often I’d meet a smirking student with that “what did you do?” look. 

Nevertheless, my dissertation got done ahead of schedule and I got to say “I told you so” to all the nay-sayers who proclaimed, “You’ll never finish if you teach.”

The key is to set a firm schedule that will be a non-negotiable. You never think, “Should I start working now?” You just go.  

It’s also important to choose a time that harmonizes with your natural rhythms. At that time, I liked working late. As a bonus, there were no distractions: nobody else was around. 

Some of my colleagues would rise early, begin work at 7, and end their day around noon. They’d take the entire afternoon and evening off without a single twinge of guilt.

Best of all, you create a habit, just as you did with your workspace. When your work time rolls around, you’ll automatically tune into your dissertation. As you make progress, you’ll actually look forward to each work session.

6. Set up a supportive accountability buddy or hire a coach

Find a classmate — not necessarily in the same department — who’s also writing a dissertation. Some buddies meet weekly to share what they’ve done. Some have daily telephone check-ins. What matters is that you’re comfortable with the arrangement so you’ll be motivated to keep going.

Set the ground rules: no judgment, no scolding, and no false praise. You’ll want to look forward to each meeting. 

You might decide to ask each other questions, but you might just report progress. Consistency is more important than format.

If you can afford the fees, it’s not unusual for doctoral students to hire a life coach or career coach to stay motivated. Hiring a coach can be a good move if your advisor isn’t particularly helpful, if you’re experiencing an unusual amount of stress or if your department is so lacking in collegiality that you can’t find a buddy. 

You call your coach three or four times a month to report progress. Coaches are trained to offer encouragement without hype. You may find yourself experiencing personal as well as professional growth.

7. Promise yourself a meaningful but completely realistic reward.

I began planning my graduation party long before I finished writing. Some of my classmates planned travel, reunions with family, or even weddings. Knowing you’ve got a light waiting at the end of the tunnel does two things: you get motivated and you keep things in perspective. This is just one blip in your life. There’s no need to stress over it. 

The end is closer than you think …

Don’t wait! Once you get momentum going, you’ll start to feel rewarded as you pass each milestone.

Believe it or not, many PhDs carry happy memories of writing their dissertations. It’s a rare chance to focus on one significant research problem. You’re learning skills you will use throughout your career, especially if you engage in research. And you’ll never forget the moment when you walk across that stage to claim your degree, and someone calls you “Doctor” for the very first time.

I recently had a request to give a talk to graduate students about writer’s block. This term is frequently mentioned in the context of graduate writing, presumably because of the general sense that something is inhibiting the writing processes of students at this level. While I was explaining why I didn’t want to give a talk on writer’s block, I realised that I spend quite a lot of time telling various people that I’m sceptical about the concept of academic writer’s block. Having recently read two interesting takes on writer’s block in academia (from  Helen Kara  and  Julia Molinari ), I decided that my own disinclination to use this concept might be worth exploring.

In general, I am resistant to identifying common graduate writing difficulties as writer’s block. Most graduate writers who are struggling with their writing are actually struggling with their thinking. That isn’t just a semantic quibble: it matters that we grasp exactly what is inhibiting our writing processes. When we diagnose ourselves as having writer’s block, we can start to believe that we aren’t currently able to write. If you find yourself with a sore leg, it may well be that avoiding walking is a sound strategy. If you find yourself unable to write, might it be a sound strategy to avoid writing? The answer to that question is almost always no. Not writing has little-to-no curative power, in my experience. I’m not saying that we don’t need to take breaks; there are many things that we can do away from our desks to clear our minds and loosen up our ideas. But when we are committed to working, the act of writing is often the most immediate way to tackle the problems in our thinking. The risk of identifying inevitable  writing challenges  as  writer’s block  is that doing so can lessen the chance that we will  use writing to move our ideas forward .

The idea of writer’s block can thus be seen as having the potential to detach writing from its broader intellectual context. When we treat writing challenges as  psychological rather than intellectual , we run the risk of minimising the conceptual work involved in graduate writing. I have, of course, encountered graduate writers who appear to have a disposition towards writing that is so fraught that they may need some sort of psychological shift in order to develop an effective writing routine. But for most graduate writers, writing is being hampered primarily by the challenge of sorting out what they think  (or  what they think they should think  or  what others think  or  what their supervisor thinks about what they think). In other words, they don’t have a psychological block; they simply have the intellectual confusions endemic to the process of communicating sophisticated research. Those intellectual confusions are real, and they can have deleterious consequences for writing. But when we treat these problems as conceptual problems in our thinking, we create the space to use writing as a strategy to solve those problems. Writing can move from being the problematic thing to being a means to solve the problem.

To use writing in this way, I suggest introducing a new font that will signal that you are writing in an exploratory vein for your own benefit. The variant font will remind you that your eventual reader need never see these ruminations, thus lessening your own reticence. Using this new font, try writing something like this: “ I’m worried that what I’m saying here …”

“… is inconsistent with what I said on p37.”

“… might be confusing the cause with the effect.”

“… may lead the reader to think that my research is less significant than I’ve claimed.”

“… is the sort of thing that annoys my supervisor.”

Staying in this provisional, for-your-own-eyes-only font, try writing a follow-up sentence or passage: “ To figure this out, I need to … ”

“… re-read the sections on and around p37 and decide which formulation works best. Does this shift represent an actual shift in my thinking or just a different way of expressing things?”

“… satisfy myself about the direction of causality in my argument and think of a way to flag all the places where this may have become confused.”

“… revisit my initial claims for significance to see if they are affected by the current line of reasoning.”

“… decide how I feel about that potential reaction, whether that annoyance is something I want to withstand or something that should guide me in a different direction.”

The key, for me, is that this writing is just that: writing. We can’t, arguably, have writer’s block when we are actively writing. Instead, we may have unresolved issues that are making us want to avoid writing. Using writing as the means of addressing these issues gives us a strategy for inevitable conceptual hurdles. Even in those cases in which writing about writing highlights serious problems, we have still made progress by identifying what is wrong. In the end, my concern is simply that the writer’s block label may be further alienating us from our own writing. While it may not be possible to write our way out of all problems, I’m convinced that it is near-impossible to solve writing problems without using writing as our central strategy.

Writer’s block is the opposite of writer’s inspiration. The block is psychological ans due to a feeling of depression rather than of hope. The answer is to try to get into a happy mood or better state of mind.

Well, in my case it is often the inability to write with a good syntax. Every time I start a sentence it is like having a little devil on your shoulder who tells you. ” Are you sure to write it that way?” Maybe you don’t have enough vocabulary or it is like not to have a great sense of great writing. In school I didn’t get an answer what exactly I can pratice to step up my writing. The teacher I had often criticized my written expression. Out of this experince for me their is a fear to write something in any life situation.

It is good that you do know what you want to say at the sentence level. Learning a few tricks for how to say it (and why each might work) sounds to be worth seeking out, given previous bad feedback.

At one point I had a good manager who took time to explain why my sentences weren’t as effective as they should be, how to adjust them, and what the purpose of the updated layout was. It has allowed me to at least take a view on some of the unexplained advice I see on-line.

Maybe even try starting by deliberately writing your sentences in a known bad way, so that at least you have the phrases and information but in a known miss-order, then rearrange to another ordering to practice different styles. Being half right is actually quite good!

For more advanced academics, sometimes it’s not “writer’s block”, but just literal inability to come up with another good project, even though we’ve successfully done it in the past.

Like… we know how to write, and if we had anything to say we’d simply do so. But sometimes after writing two books and all the related articles, that next project is just elusive, and you realize you’re still only 43 and too young to quit. But it’s been two years since you’ve written anything and the problem (I repeat) isn’t that you don’t know how to write: it’s that you can’t write anything because you haven’t yet done the research because you have no clue what you’re supposed to be working on now…

Writer’s block is one of the worst things that can happen to any writer. It gets even more frustrating when you are writing a PhD thesis and cannot figure out how to move on to the next bit. What can you do then? Should you simply wait for inspiration to strike? Not necessarily.  There are plenty of ways to beat writer’s block when writing a dissertation. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the best methods at your disposal.

Try to Be Spontaneous

When you have writer’s block, you tend to overthink what you want to write. You might find yourself trying to string a simple sentence together and be left with a blank Word Document instead. It helps to be spontaneous here. Instead of trying to write a perfect sentence, you should simply write whatever comes to your mind. This free-writing can remove the mental block that’s preventing you from writing and develop a flow.

You might hate what you wrote when you revisit your draft later, but you have got the basic ideas down. You can refine this draft and improve it until you are happy with what you wrote.

Find a Place Conducive to Writing

It can be difficult to write a thesis when you are surrounded by distractions. Things can get even harder if you add writer’s block to the mix. Your brain is just begging you to focus on other things instead and you are unlikely to get anything done.

Finding a quiet place that eliminates the distractions that usually surround you can be very helpful here. You can switch off your phone and focus on your writing until you have a good flow going. Most PhD students can benefit from a home office that allows them to write without being called away every 5 minutes to do other things.

Build It into Your Routine

As with other things, you need to make a habit of writing your thesis every day. For example, you can dedicate an hour or two every day to this activity. Building a routine is also helpful in warding off a potential writer’s block. Once your brain recognizes thesis writing as a daily task, it will immediately jump into a productive zone every time you sit down to write.

We also suggest choosing a time when you are most productive. For instance, if you are busy running errands in the middle of the day then trying to write your thesis at this time every day would defeat the purpose of setting a routine. Instead, you can choose a time when you aren’t doing anything and the distractions are at a minimum. Early mornings or late nights are usually ideal for this.

Choosing a specific spot for writing every day can also be helpful as it allows your brain to discern a pattern and associate this spot with thesis writing.

Declutter Your Mind

Writer’s block is often the byproduct of stress and a hectic routine. If you are struggling with something similar, then we suggest you give yourself a break and get some necessary R&R. Doing so can help you get rid of the things that are weighing you down. Once you are feeling better, you can take a stab at your thesis again and get back to writing. If you are distracted by personal or professional problems, then it helps to resolve these issues as best as you can before you return to your thesis.

Make Yourself Accountable to Someone

Some people work best under pressure. If you are one of them, you could benefit from an accountability partner or a coach who can check on your progress. The idea that you are answerable to someone can help you get over your writer’s block and focus on your thesis more. Writing is never a smooth process, and most successful writing proceeds in fits and starts. Writer’s block refers to those greater-than-ordinary blockages. It occurs when a writer feels truly stuck and unable to write. There are many possible causes, including anxiety, stress, or a simple lack of understanding of the material. Below are some common causes of writer’s block, with some potential solutions. Do not forget that if you have access to a writing centre, probably the best way to work through writer’s block is to meet with a writing centre instructor.

Are you having trouble understanding the assignment? You can gain a better understanding of the assignment through a combination of outside help and self-help:

  • When the instructor gives out an assignment, ask questions about anything that you find new or confusing. If you have questions, chances are that other students do too.
  • Most assignments use keywords that will help you figure out what you are expected to do. Look for keywords and phrases such as analyse , discuss , argue , compare , and provide evidence .

Have you done enough research? If you don’t know what to write about, you may need to do more research or review the research you have already done:

  • Go to the library and speak with a librarian about finding materials on your topic and specific to the discipline.
  • Go back and reread key passages from your research materials. After reading, make notes on key ideas or potential pieces of evidence. Write in your own words so that you engage more fully with the material. Be sure to jot down any of your own ideas as well.

Have you done too much research? Sometimes if you’ve done a lot of reading on a particular subject, beginning to write can be overwhelming. See if either of the following two strategies helps focus your thinking:

  • Come up with a narrow research question that you can reasonably answer within the assigned word count. This question should help you discard materials that are beyond the scope of the paper.
  • Put the notes aside and ask yourself, what are the essential points to make about the topic? When you gather a lot of notes, you can easily become lost in all of the detail.

Do you have a topic? In many of your courses, you must narrow down a topic or even create your own. This challenging task can make getting started tricky. Try these suggestions:

  • Be sure that you have a specific topic. If you try to write on a topic that is too general or too vague, you will probably struggle.
  • Use course materials to help you generate or refine your topic. Reread lecture notes or readings in areas that you find interesting or that relate to the assigned topic. Look at the bibliographies of course readings to help you discover possible research directions.
  • Talk about your ideas. Have a conversation with a friend or another student in your class. Speak with your instructor about how to proceed with any thoughts you might already have for the assignment. Make an appointment at the Writing Centre. Sometimes discussing your ideas with another person can help you to clarify them.
  • Try a mind-mapping exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down your topic, or idea for a topic, in the centre of the page. In the surrounding space, write down any related ideas from class materials and research. Now, look at this mind map and take note of any interesting connections. Cross out any unrelated areas. Use the mind map to help create an essay outline or a research plan.

Have you written a paper in this genre before? It can be hard to get started on a piece of writing when it’s in an unfamiliar genre or discipline. For example, if you’re used to writing lab reports, you might not know how to get started on a thesis-driven essay. To solve this problem, find out the conventions for this type of writing in this particular discipline:

  • Check the course and department websites for examples or explanations. This site provides a number of useful advice files on specific genres: e.g., The Book Review or Article Critique , Writing an Annotated Bibliography , The Literature Review , The Comparative Essay , Writing about History , Writing in the Sciences , and The Lab Report .
  • Seek guidance from your professor or TA.
  • Look for handbooks and guides on how to write in specific disciplines.

Are you worried about sounding smart enough? It’s normal to have trouble expressing your ideas in the early drafts of a paper. Here are tips to avoid paralyzing yourself unnecessarily:

  • Don’t try to use unfamiliar words to sound smart, and don’t convince yourself that your readers want you to do so. Focus on getting your ideas down simply and clearly.
  • Just get something down on the page! Try a free-writing exercise. Open up a new Word document and turn off your computer screen. Set a timer for five minutes. Start writing about whatever comes into your mind on the topic. Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, or punctuation, and don’t stop writing. After five minutes, look at what you’ve written. Ignore grammar or spelling problems. Instead, look for any important or recurring ideas.
  • Leave plenty of time for revising and editing. Once you have your ideas formulated in a draft, you can work on combining some of your simple sentences into more complex ones. You can also improve your word choice and, if necessary, make the overall tone more formal or academic by eliminating inappropriate colloquialisms and relying on key terms in your discipline.

Do you find introductions difficult to write? Even very experienced writers often find the introduction to be the hardest part of a paper. The best remedies relieve the pressure of having to come up with the ideal introduction before moving on to the body:

  • Write the introduction last. This approach may sound radical, but once you’ve written your paper, you will have a better sense of exactly what you need to introduce. Most of us were taught to write a paper from beginning to end, but research shows that many people don’t think most effectively this way. Don’t be afraid to start writing with what you know, even if it is something that you plan to deal with in a body paragraph. A writing plan, outline, or focus statement is still a good idea, but you don’t need to write the introduction first.
  • Write the introduction quickly. If you find it impossible to write the paper unless the earliest draft begins with an introduction, then write one just to get going. But don’t waste time on it or expect it to be perfect. Come back to it after you have completed the body, and then rewrite it.

Is outside stress distracting you from your academic work? Everybody has a life outside school, and sometimes outside responsibilities and stress can prevent you from focusing on writing. Learning new study habits can make a big difference:

  • Try time-management strategies that allow you to set aside separate time for school work and for other obligations. When you are writing, work somewhere quiet where you cannot be interrupted, turn off your cell phone, and stay off email and the Internet.
  • Take a break. If you are exhausted, you’re unlikely to be productive. Take a nap, go for a walk, or have a snack. Often time away from an essay allows you to gain perspective or generate fresh ideas.

In our Friday drop-in session, we will allow you the time to further progress your own writing projects in a number of supportive and non-intimidating ways—​utilizing free-writes, discussion activities, collective and individualized goal setting, and more to help you take manageable steps forward in your work and (hopefully) feel better about the state of your writing after each session.
