पुस्तक समीक्षा कैसे लिखें

उत्कट पाठक सामान्यतः इसमें रुचि लेते हैं कि जो पुस्तकें उन्होंने पढ़ी हैं उनके संबंध में अन्य पाठक क्या राय रखते हैं। ऐसे पाठक उन पुस्तक समीक्षाओं को पढ़ना पसंद करेंगे जो एक निष्पक्ष बोध उपलब्ध करेगी कि यह पुस्तक किस संबंध में है। यह निबंध आपको दर्शाएगा कि पुस्तक समीक्षा कैसे लिखते हैं।

पुस्तक के संबंध में कुछ वाक्य लिखिए

पहला नियम है पुस्तक की कहानी को कभी भी प्रकट नहीं करना। पाठकों की कल्पना के लिए कुछ छोड़ दीजिए। पुस्तक में होने वाली घटनाओं के विस्तृत विवरण से बचना अच्छा है। यदि पुस्तक त्रयी या किसी श्रृंखला का अंश है, तब आप इसका, और यदि आप सोचते हैं कि कि इसका आनंद लेने के लिए श्रृंखला की अन्य पुस्तकों को पढ़ना आवश्यक है, उल्लेख कर सकते हैं।

उस चीज की चर्चा कीजिए जिसने आपको इस पुस्तक में आकर्षित किया था

अपने-आप से पूछिए कि आपको इस पुस्तक में सबसे आकर्षक क्या लगा था। जो आपको आकर्षक लगा था वह पात्र, कथानक चा विषय-वस्तु में से कुछ भी या कोई और चीज हो सकती है। कहानी, और जिस तरह से इसे कहा गया है उस पर अपने अनुभव तथा सोच पर ध्यान केंद्रित कीजिए। आप स्वयं से निम्नलिखित प्रश्न पूछ सकते हैं और तदनुसार अपने उत्तरों पर आधारित एक समीक्षा लिख सकते हैं:

• आपकी पसंद का पात्र कौन था और क्यों?
• क्या पात्र आपको वास्तविक लगे थे?
• क्या कथानक में अनिश्चय/रोमांस या कोई ऐसी चीज थी जिसने आपको आकर्षित किया था?
• क्या पुस्तक ने आपको हँसाया या रुलाया था?
• दृश्य कैसे लिखे गए थे? वे किस प्रकार के दृश्य थे? उदाहरण के लिए आनंदपूर्ण दृश्य, रोमांटिक दृश्य, रहस्यात्मक दृश्य, इत्यादि।
• कथानक ने कैसा आकार लिया था? क्या कथानक ने आपके चित्त को आकर्षित किया था?
• क्या आपको संवाद पसंद आए थे? क्या कोई ऐसे संवाद थे जिनसे आप प्रेरित हुए थे?
• पुस्तक में समायोजन कैसा था? क्या यह ऊष्णतापूर्ण रोमांस था, या पागलपन भरे अभियान के लिए कोई विदेशी ठिकाना था? उदाहरण के लिए, कोई पर्वतीय क्षेत्र आसन्न संकट सूचित कर सकता है। वातावरण में व्याप्त गुलाबों की सुगंध रोमांस का सुझाव दे सकती है। किसी अस्पताल का प्रतीक्षा कक्ष विपदा सूचित करता है।
• किस तरह की शब्दावली का प्रयोग किया गया था? उदाहरण के लिए उत्तर प्रदेश के ग्रामीण व्यक्तियों के द्वारा प्रयोग की गई भाषा इसी राज्य के शहरी क्षेत्रों में रहने वाले व्यक्तियों से अलग सुनाई देगी।

पुस्तक के संबंध में किसी ऐसी चीज का उल्लेख कीजिए जो आपको पसंद नहीं आई थी

जहाँ आपको पुस्तक के अधिकांश अंश अच्छे लगे होंगे, कुछ ऐसा भी हो सकता है जो आपको पसंद नहीं आया हो। यह कहानी का अंत, जिस तरह से पात्रों से व्यवहार किया गया था, विषय-वस्तु, संवाद या समायोजन, कुछ भी हो सकता है। इसका वर्णन कीजिए।

अपनी पुस्तक समीक्षा का समापन कीजए

अपनी समीक्षा का सारांश यह उल्लेख करते हुए दीजिए कि किस प्रकार के पाठकों को यह पुस्तक आकर्षित करती है। यह युवा पाठक हो सकते हैं, वयस्क पाठक हो सकते हैं, नाटक, रोमांस, अनिश्चय, रहस्य या किसी अन्य विधा के कट्टर अनुगामी हो सकते हैं। यदि आप इस पुस्तक की आपके द्वारा पढ़ी गई किसी अन्य पुस्तक के साथ तुलना कर सकते हैं, तब उसे भी सम्मिलित कर लीजिए।

पुस्तक का मूल्यांकन कीजिए

पुस्तक का मूल्यंकन उपलब्ध कीजिए, उदाहरण के लिए, पाँच या दस में से स्कोर। यह पाठकों को एक अच्छी अवधारणा देगा कि पुस्तक को पढ़ा जाए या नहीं।

Book Review: Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore

I don’t want to put this as a disclaimer, but I might be a wee bit partial in my rating. Tagore is one of the best poets and writers in the world. I’ve loved his works since I was a child (we had a few of his stories in our Hindi and English textbooks). My personal copy of Gitanjali is almost two decades old. I got it from a tiny makeshift bookstore.

The original poems were written in Bengali, the native language of Tagore. He then translated them (and many other works) to English. What can get better than reading the poems translated by the poet himself? Of course, nothing compares to the beauty of reading them in the original language, but since I do not know the language, I have to settle for the next best.

Tagore was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India. He wrote his first poem when he was around eight years old. Songs, sketches, poems, short stories, and prose—Tagore had numerous talents as a musician, polymath, artist, essayist, composer, playwright, and poet.

From his birth to his death (7 May 1861- 7 August 1941), Tagore’s entire life was during the British Raj (British rule) in India. He was a part of the freedom struggle. He wrote and composed the National Anthem of India and Bangladesh [which was then a part of Akhand Bharat (United :and of Bharat)]. Gitanjali or Song Offerings: A Collection of 103 Prose Poems

The English version of Gitanjali includes 69 poems from the Bengali version of Gitanjali, along with the rest for other works. He made a few changes, such as clubbing two poems and removing some phrases during the translation.

The original Bengali collection was first published in 1910. The translated version was published in 1912, which won him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. He was the first non-European to receive the award.

The second edition of Gitanjali (Song Offerings) has an introduction written by WB Yeats. The core theme of Gitanjali is devotion to the Supreme. The poems are steeped in spiritual essence. The title suits the theme to perfection.

I feel honored to review such a revered piece of literature during the NaPoWriMo month of April. At the same time, I wonder if I can do justice to his work.

If my review appears more like a student in awe of the mentor rather than an actual analysis, you know the reason.

The poems are written in the style of the era, where words and spellings that differ from today's English. This period could be called the Indian Renaissance. You will see words like thou, thee, thy, etc. in every poem. While most poems have one-sided conversations with God, some are narrated to fellow villagers, Mother, and even readers.

Nature, love (for God), simplicity, devotion, death, graceful acceptance of situations, gratitude, peace, happiness, melancholy, and life are some of the recurring themes of his poems.

The imagery is vivid and marvelous. We can picture the hills, the rivers, the open sky, birds flying around. We can hear the sounds of gushing waters, feel the warmth of a kerosene lamp on a twilight evening, and breathe in the scent of night flowers.

The poems are metrical in Bengali. In English, they are lyrical and flow like the waves of a brook. Most of them are about half a page in length. A handful of poems are longer than a page. But the amount of emotion and imagery he packs in each poem is immense. A Few Favorite Poems

In the first poem of the book, the poet talks to Lord Krishna (who carries a flute) about how his frail vessel (the human body) will be filled with new life no matter how many times it gets emptied. The body might go weak and lose its life, but the heart and soul which have experienced the joy of being blessed by Krishna will always remain pure and stay alive.

The third poem shows the poet’s marvel at the melody played by Lord Krishna and despite his attempts, he doesn’t seem to be able to join the Lord to sing along. The music of the Lord seems to encompass the whole world as the poet stays mesmerized.

I’ll add a small note here. Lord Krishna is known for his musical sense, his magnetic appeal, his magical ability to know everything, and his wisdom mixed with loads of playful mischief. I’m going to add a picture at the end of the post so that you have an idea about his appearance. Poem 32 talks about how everyone who loved the poet has bound him with that emotion; except the Lord. The Lord has set him free. There are no expectations, no demands. Even if the poet doesn’t think of the Lord, he knows he is still loved. He knows that the Lord will wait for the poet to love him back.

Let’s jump to the 83rd poem in the book. It is my most favorite. Here, Mother is Goddess Durga, worshipped by the Bengalis and across India. When I was a child, my dad recited the poem, especially the first line:

Mother, I shall weave a chain of pearls for thy neck with the tears of my sorrow.

I barely understood what it meant, but the words stayed with me. Today, when I read the poem, I understand how simply he put forward his devotion. He owns nothing but sorrow, and that is what he gifts Her with all his heart.

The last poem of the book winds up the themes and places them at the Lord’s feet. Imagery is in abundance in this poem. Not a single poem is complete without referring to Nature. For the poet, Nature and God are a single entity. The poet surrenders, expressing his fatigue at having led this life and his desire to reach God to rest forever.

Finding splendid books is like mining. You have to pull out the ones that you like from the mountain of possibilities and sift through the streams of information to discover the gold.

One of the biggest systems that helps readers do this are reviews.

Why Write a Book Review

First, I want to thank you for supporting authors. It is difficult to get reviews, but as they add up, it creates a snowball effect.

As more and more readers leave reviews, more readers see the book and choose to read it. Reviews give potential readers the opportunity to see other people’s opinions and determine if the book is their favorite type of jewel.

ARC readers, or advanced reader copy readers, have the responsibility and privilege of reading a book before it has been released. So that on release day, they can immediately add their reviews and help bolster the sales of the new book.

It is important to know the genre of the book you are reviewing and read it attentively. Then leave a review that is both objective and opinionated. Can you tell the carat of the jewel? And how closely must you look to see any flaws?

How do you do that? I’m glad you asked. Writing an excellent book review is easier said than done. So, here are a few tips.

How to Write a Good Book Review

How to Start a Book Review

It may be obvious, but you should start a good book review with the title and name of the author. This makes it clear which book you reviewed. In some cases, like Amazon and Goodreads, this is done for you by the review being associated with only that item.

Why both? Some titles are repeated and it could become confusing to the reader whether you are reviewing the nonfiction or the fantasy fiction novel of the same name. The author’s name helps pick through rocks, fool’s gold, and genuine gold.

Knowledge about the author can come in handy here. What awards have they won? What accreditations do they have? Is this a debut? Is it a long book or short, as in how many pages is it?

Next, include a basic summary of the plot and themes if you are writing a review for fiction, or a basic premise of what the book is about if you are writing for nonfiction. Try to sum up the theme of a book in one sentence, then add details. Keep it clear and avoid spoilers. This is where you differentiate between quartz and diamonds.

Give a sense of the book and writing. Share quotes that stood out to you. As a Fictionary StoryCoach Editor, I like to add my take on the structure of the book, structure of the scenes, and whether they used all thirty-eight Fictionary elements, like the five senses, to give depth to their story.

How to End a Book Review

Here is where you give your opinion of the book. Be honest but balanced in your review. I usually do this in two sections. Put what you loved first or that the author does well before addressing your constructive feedback. I think it helps to think of it as constructive feedback because then I see it as a way to help instead of criticizing the author’s choices or abilities.

You can go into depth on characters, setting, plot, structure, and prose. Try to keep it objective because what one person dislikes might be what someone else loves. Back up your criticism with examples and how it affects the reader’s experience. Was the ending satisfactory or not? Can you say why without spoiling it? Is the book unique or does it hit the familiar tropes readers love?

Compare and contrast to similar books on the market. Are they sapphires or emeralds? This can help the reader determine if they would like the book or not based on their personal preference instead of yours.

The author does the same thing when marketing the book because it is a good way to tell what the themes and style of a story are. Genre and even subgenre are pretty general, but comparing it to a specific book can give a potential reader a much better handle on if the book is their typical reading go-to.

Tips For Writing a Book Review

This is where you polish your skills and make a book shine.

Remember kindness. The author needs your respectful constructive feedback to improve. And as I said before, what one person dislikes about a book might be the very thing that other people like about a book. Hurting someone’s feelings helps no one.

There are many places today where you can publish your reviews. Including but not limited to social media, Amazon, Good Reads, blogs, BookTube, and more. The content and tone of reviews vary based on where it will be published. So, think about your audience and what the purpose of your review is.

 Keep it succinct. People searching for their next read are unlikely to read a dissertation. However, you should also put time and effort into making it convey the most important aspects of the story and writing.

Break it up into brief paragraphs. Writing on the internet today has become about creating as much white space as possible to keep the attention of the reader. So, break it up with your pickax instead of keeping it all in one block of text.

Add a star rating. Star ratings are used on many of the review sites or you can make your own system for your social media. But using stars can help the author build trust with their readership. High star ratings improve click counts, but don’t necessarily create sales. And remember, one-star reviews can really hurt the business of a new author starting out and should be saved for very special cases.

Avoid spoilers or at least include a warning about spoilers. If spoilers are included in the review, it can ruin sales. Especially for a mystery or thriller where the primary goal of reading to the end is discovering who done it.

Consider which format you read. There are differences in the experience of reading an ebook versus paperback versus hardcover versus audiobook. If you have read a special edition, include in your review any pictures, maps, quality of paper, printing, or the cover. Sometimes authors like to change their covers to give their book a fresh look. So, include your likes or dislikes of the cover as well in your balanced, respectful feedback.

This might just be the author/editor in me talking, but…write a draft of your review, then edit and revise it. And please, make a grammar check before you post it. This will make it ever so much easier for the author and review readers to understand what you are trying to get across, instead of throwing out your opinions based on assumptions or simple illegibility.

Point out your own personal biases. Personally, when reading romance, I prefer closed door and less spice. So, I will be honest about what I read, skipped, or whether I will read that author again based on that preference. This helps other readers like me who want their romance closed-door to avoid the book or choose the same books. But it also helps the readers who like spice to perk up and say, “Ooh, I should try this one.”

Some people like the author to wax lyrical with their purple prose and some readers like gritty and hard writing. Preference can affect your opinion of the book when that is something very subjective. 

So, mentioning it in the review can help readers get an overall picture of how the author has written the book, and whether it will appeal to them—even if it wasn’t your favorite jewel. This is a kindness to both the author and the potential readers, reading your review.

How to Review a Book Conclusion

A good book review is a balance between objective and subjective. Writing one takes time and effort. If you always consider pulling out the positive things you liked about a book before you go off on a rant, you’ll help yourself, the author, and potential other readers better.

Think of the book like a geode. It may just look like a rock on the outside, but if you take the time to crack it open and inspect what is inside, you might find some sparkly crystals.

Reading is often a matter of taste, but classics are loved by many throughout time for a reason, which has to do with deep structure and an understanding of the language they are written in.

A solid first-semester introduction to the Hindi language, this textbook includes an introductory chapter on Hindi script and the sounds represented by Hindi letters, as well as a variety of lessons that are focused either on topics of conversation like family and common places (home, school, market) or on functional elements of the language like expressions of actions in the past, present, and future. Numerous instructional videos accompany the lesson materials. An overall glossary of vocabulary terms is not included, though each chapter does contain lists of key vocabulary items specific to each lesson.

Content Accuracy rating: 5

The English content is accurate, generally error-free, and unbiased. As a reviewer who specializes in second-language instruction for other languages, and not Hindi, I’m not in a position myself to comment on the accuracy of the Hindi lesson texts.

Relevance/Longevity rating: 5

Lesson content is presented in a way that will be helpful for true beginners to the language, focusing on basic conversational settings and fundamentals of Hindi grammar. Each chapter includes review activities relevant to a study abroad setting, making the course more relevant and meaningful for students who are preparing for a study abroad experience in a Hindi-speaking area.

One of this textbook’s key strengths is the abundance of interactive activities and review exercises throughout all of the chapters. Interactive activities are programmed in H5P, allowing for instant feedback. There are also some task-based speaking activities that require a classroom setting where students can interact with each other, and individual speaking activities that involve self-directed audio recording of student responses.

Clarity rating: 4

The text is clear and concise, and should be accessible to most undergraduate students. Common grammar concepts such as gender and case marking for nouns, as well as tense and aspect marking for verbs, are introduced in a somewhat perfunctory manner and may require additional explanation on the part of the instructor, where students are not already familiar with such concepts. The reading examples in certain lessons, such as the one on family, include clickable glosses for key vocabulary, but other readings in later lessons do not include any glosses.

Consistency rating: 4

The textbook is highly consistent across chapters, with each chapter including a number of reading and listening examples. Transliteration of Hindi script is provided only for the first lesson. An area for further improvement could be to provide alternative views of the reading examples including transliteration and glosses for all of the lessons.

Modularity rating: 4

Introductory foreign language textbooks generally do not lend themselves to modular presentation since certain language skills, such as an introduction to the script and pronunciation, provide a foundation for more generalized learning. With that in mind, the book is reasonably divided into smaller reading sections and activities that make sense for a first-semester college course.

The format in which the dialogues are presented, in table format with separate sentences in each line and translations in each column, is relatively static and does not allow for easy adaptation or reorganization.

Organization/Structure/Flow rating: 5

The topics in the text are presented in a clear fashion, which follows a logic of introducing progressively more advanced grammar points over the course of study.

Interface rating: 5

The text is straightforward to use. All of the accompanying instructional videos include full transcripts.

Future iterations of the textbook could be further improved by including supplementary materials that would make the course content even more easily navigated and managed, such as a full glossary of vocabulary with links to lesson pages for each vocab item, and vocabulary flashcard materials that could either be provided in OER format or hosted on an external site like Quizlet or Memrise.

Grammatical Errors rating: 5

The text contains very few grammatical errors.

Cultural Relevance rating: 5

The text is culturally appropriate for native-English learners of Hindi who are learning in a college setting. Additional content and cultural notes in each chapter provide ample additional opportunities for learning about culture.

Basic Hindi I is an online, interactive, and tech-enhanced textbook that promotes speaking, listening, reading, writing, and cultural skills. Each Chapter in this book has clear stated learning outcomes, a review of previous chapters, reading/listening sections, study abroad section, relevant grammatical items, and cultural notes. The pedagogical approach in the book is mixed and informed by the socio-cultural approaches and the generative approaches of the Second Language Acquisition theory. The mixed theoretical backgrounds match diverse learning and teaching philosophies and styles. Following the learning outcomes guided by American Council of Teaching Foreign Language (ACTFL), this textbook aims for the novice learners to attain intermediate low to mid-level proficiency level. The textbook incorporates pictures, audio-visual materials, and activities developed on the H5P platform to keep learners engaged.
