Saudi Arabia , arid, sparsely populated kingdom of the Middle East that in the 20th century became one of the world’s largest oil-producing countries in terms of output. It is ruled by the Saud family , which in the 18th century entered an alliance with the austere and conservative Wahhābī Islamic movement. Mohammed bin Salman , the forceful crown prince, is the de facto ruler, acting on behalf of his elderly father King Salman .

Extending across most of the northern and central Arabian Peninsula , Saudi Arabia is a young country that is heir to a rich history. In its western highlands, along the Red Sea , lies the Hejaz , which is the cradle of Islam and the site of that religion’s holiest cities, Mecca and Medina . In the country’s geographic heartland is a region known as Najd (“Highland”), a vast arid zone that until recent times was populated by nomadic tribes. To the east, along the Persian Gulf , are the country’s abundant oil fields that, since the 1960s, have made Saudi Arabia synonymous with petroleum wealth. Those three elements—religion, tribalism, and untold wealth—have fueled the country’s subsequent history.

It was only with the rise of the Saud family (Āl Saʿūd)—a Najdi group for which the country is named—and its eventual consolidation of power in the early 20th century that Saudi Arabia began to take on the characteristics of a modern country. The success of the Saud family was in no small part due to the motivating ideology of Wahhābism , an austere form of Islam that was embraced by early family leaders and that became the state creed. This deep religious conservatism has been accompanied by a ubiquitous tribalism—in which competing family groups vie for resources and status—that often has made Saudi society difficult for outsiders to comprehend. Enormous oil wealth has fueled huge and rapid investment in Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure . Many citizens have benefited from this growth, but it also has supported lavish lifestyles for the scions of the ruling family, and religious conservatives and liberal democrats alike have accused the family of squandering and mishandling the country’s wealth. In addition, civil discontent increased after the Persian Gulf War (1990–91) over the country’s close ties to the West, symbolized notably by the U.S. troops stationed in Saudi Arabia until 2005.

In the mid-20th century, most of Saudi Arabia still embraced a traditional lifestyle that had changed little over thousands of years. Since then the pace of life in Saudi Arabia accelerated rapidly. The constant flow of pilgrims to Mecca and Medina (vast throngs arrive for the annual hajj , and more pilgrims visit throughout the year for the lesser pilgrimage, the ʿumrah ) had always provided the country with outside contacts, but interaction with the outside world expanded with innovations in transportation, technology, and organization. Saudi Arabia’s growing petroleum wealth also wrought irreversible domestic changes—educational and social as well as economic. Modern methods of production have been superimposed on a traditional society by the introduction of millions of foreign workers and by the employment of hundreds of thousands of Saudis in nontraditional jobs. In addition, tens of thousands of Saudi students have studied abroad, most in the United States . Television, radio, and the Internet have become common media of communication and education, and highways and airways have replaced traditional means of transportation.

Saudi Arabia, once a country of small cities and towns, has become increasingly urban; traditional centers such as Jeddah , Mecca, and Medina have grown into large cities, and the capital, Riyadh , a former oasis town, has grown into a modern metropolis. Most of the region’s traditional nomads, the Bedouin , have been settled in cities or agrarian communities .

The country occupies about four-fifths of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Jordan , Iraq , and Kuwait to the north; by the Persian Gulf , Qatar , the United Arab Emirates , and Oman to the east; by a portion of Oman to the southeast; by Yemen to the south and southwest; and by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba to the west. Long-running border disputes were nearly resolved with Yemen (2000) and Qatar (2001); the border with the United Arab Emirates remains undefined. A territory of 2,200 square miles (5,700 square km) along the gulf coast was shared by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia as a neutral zone until 1969, when a political boundary was agreed upon. Each of the two countries administers one-half of the territory, but they equally share oil production in the entire area. The controversy over the Saudi-Iraqi Neutral Zone was legally settled in 1981 by partition, yet conflict between the two countries persisted and prevented final demarcation on the ground.

The Arabian Peninsula is dominated by a plateau that rises abruptly from the Red Sea and dips gently toward the Persian Gulf. In the north, the western highlands are upward of 5,000 feet (1,500 metres) above sea level , decreasing slightly to 4,000 feet (1,200 metres) in the vicinity of Medina and increasing southeastward to more than 10,000 feet (3,000 metres). Mount Sawdāʾ, which is situated near Abhā in the south, is generally considered the highest point in the country. Estimates of its elevation range from 10,279 to 10,522 feet (3,133 to 3,207 metres). The watershed of the peninsula is only 25 miles (40 km) from the Red Sea in the north and recedes to 80 miles (130 km) near the Yemen border. The coastal plain, known as the Tihāmah , is virtually nonexistent in the north, except for occasional wadi deltas, but it widens slightly toward the south. The imposing escarpment that runs parallel to the Red Sea is somewhat interrupted by a gap northwest of Mecca but becomes more clearly continuous to the south.

Toward the interior, the surface gradually descends into the broad plateau area of the Najd , which is covered with lava flows and volcanic debris as well as with occasional sand accumulations; it slopes down from an elevation of about 4,500 feet (1,370 metres) in the west to about 2,500 feet (760 metres) in the east. There the drainage is more clearly dendritic (i.e., branching) and is much more extensive than that flowing toward the Red Sea. To the east, this region is bounded by a series of long, low ridges, with steep slopes on the west and gentle slopes on the east; the area is 750 miles (1,200 km) long and curves eastward from north to south. The most prominent of the ridges are the Ṭuwayq Mountains (Jibāl Ṭuwayq), which rise from the plateau at an elevation of some 2,800 feet (850 metres) above sea level and reach more than 3,500 feet (1,100 metres) southwest of Riyadh, overlooking the plateau’s surface to the west by 800 feet (250 metres) and more.

The interior of the Arabian Peninsula contains extensive sand surfaces. Among them is the world’s largest sand area, the Rubʿ al-Khali (“Empty Quarter”), which dominates the southern part of the country and covers more than 250,000 square miles (647,500 square km). It slopes from above 2,600 feet (800 meters) near the border with Yemen northeastward down almost to sea level near the Persian Gulf; individual sand mountains reach elevations of 800 feet (250 metres), especially in the eastern part. A smaller sand area of about 22,000 square miles (57,000 square km), called Al-Nafūd ( nafūd designating a sandy area or desert), is in the north-central part of the country. A great arc of sand, Al-Dahnāʾ , almost 900 miles (1,450 km) long but in places only 30 miles (50 km) wide, joins Al-Nafūd with the Rubʿ al-Khali. Eastward, as the plateau surface slopes very gradually down to the gulf, there are numerous salt flats ( sabkhah s) and marshes. The gulf coastline is irregular, and the coastal waters are very shallow.

There are virtually no permanent surface streams in the country, but wadis are numerous. Those leading to the Red Sea are short and steep, though one unusually long extension is made by Wadi Al-Ḥamḍ , which rises near Medina and flows inland to the northwest for 100 miles (160 km) before turning westward; those draining eastward are longer and more developed except in Al-Nafūd and the Rubʿ al-Khali. Soils are poorly developed. Large areas are covered with pebbles of varying sizes. Alluvial deposits are found in wadis, basins, and oases. Salt flats are especially common in the east.

Since Saudi Arabia is known for its generous and giving culture, we figured it would only make sense to embrace that charitable spirit to celebrate Saudi National Day. This year, we’re offering these presentation slides to help commemorate the KSA’s past, present, and future.

What is Saudi National Day?

For nearly thirty years, King Abdul Aziz Al Saud strove to join the Nejd and Hijaz regions into his kingdom. Finally, on September 23, 1932, he announced the nation’s unification under the new Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

And now in 2022, we celebrate 92 years of this Kingdom by commemorating its past and reflecting on the forecasted Vision 2030. The projects strive to solidify Saudi Arabia as a hub for technology and tourism.

This year, there are several reasons to celebrate Saudi National Day, among them:

Renewing your spirit of belonging. Join in on the festivities and engage with the community around you to renew your passion and belonging in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Appreciating the opportunities it provides. It’s a nation that seeks to empower its citizens and residents and provide them with what they need to contribute to the Kingdom’s continuous growth and prosperity.

Enjoying the beautiful historic, cultural, and religious sites it homes. Immerse yourself in the rich heritage harbored all across the Kingdom. From Mecca to AlUla, Saudi Arabia’s care for its sites made it an exciting destination for tourists and investors.

At Prezlab, we are celebrating by extending our tools to help you make the most of your celebrations. Download the slides and customize your own Saudi National Day celebratory presentation.

Saudi Arabia

Transcript: There I was sitting on a window sill wondering why did this have to happen to us? We were once a happy family too. Just me and my Father. Life was perfect until one day... Uh....yeah, that would be nice. I would really like that. I'm really very sorry, but I don't talk to him now what so ever. If you want, I can help you get your oil barrels back.... "WHAT! Thats not fair, she promised me she'll come this time!" I screamed. "I'm sorry dear, but I can't do anything," Father said. Thanks to Omar's help, I got all the oil barrels back and my father held his head high with pride. A COUPLE MONTHS LATER.... "Aaliyah, Aaliyah!" Yelled the Nanny. "Yes?" I asked. "Your father wants to see you right away." She replied. We relied on oil so much. Since it was harnessed from underground, we would drill for it. We used oil for cars, had jobs for people at factories, and electricity. Many people had jobs, but now many have become homeless. Also, there's barely any electricity. The bad things were when oil was manufactured, it would release greenhouse gases. The greenhouse gases that were released would pollute our environment. So then at night, Omar and me went to the Egypt's Science Center and got my oil barrels back. After that, we put them into the truck and drove all the way to Saudi Arabia. I couldn't see my father cry anymore. It was just to difficult. I decided I was going to go to Egypt and get all of the oil barrels back. But, before I did anything, I got a call from Diya. I left my father a note saying, "I will be back with pride." I don't think he knows what I mean, but when I come back, he will. Saudi Arabia The sandstorms were harsh. One part of me wanted to go back, but then another part wanted revenge! I wouldn't just let them get away with it. "Aaliyah, Diya would not be able to come back for another couple for months as she has many exams coming up," Father said. I reached Egypt and met this guy, Omar. He was very sweet and caring. He let me stay in his house which was really nice. And, then one day, I saw a picture of him and another guy, in front of Egypt's Science Center. Diya told me that a good alternative energy source would be solar. This is a good idea so we can get our place back in society. It was a hot morning in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Everybody was happy that Diya was coming back from after completing her studies aboard. That idea was perfect! It worked out really good and we got our place back in society. My father was really proud of me and Diya. We were ruined completely! We went from rich to poor. I would see my father cry every night, especially when our house got auctioned. That was the worst. Solar is harnessed by the sun. Photovoltaics harnesses the sun's rays converting them into electricity. The good things about solar power are that its free, abudant, and clean. Also it reduces loss of power. The bad things are that we might have problems at night, batteries are expensive, and it requires large areas of land. I asked him who that was in the picture with him. He said it was his brother, Masud. Masud is a traitor and is defaming my country. He's been robbing primary energy sources of many countries. I brought water bottles, food, clothes, and a tent with me. The quickest route to Egypt was the desert way. It would be hard but I have to, for my father. Now it was time to get back at the enemies. They made my father cry, now its time for them to cry. They are going to pay for every one of my father's tears. Masud robbed our oil barrels and ruined our fields in Saudi Arabia, I told him. Because of your brother, my happy little family was ruined. That was just the beginning of bad things. The next day was even worse! My father had come home crying that night. He told me people from Egypt's Science Center came at night and took all of our oil barrels and ruin our oil fields. We're ruined, dear! Those people have been trying to ruin us for years and now they have accomplished.

Transcript: Saudi Arabia Background... In 1938, the first oil reserves were discovered in Saudi Arabia. Shortly after, Aramco (Arabian American Oil Company) was formed. By 1960, the Saudi Arabia government joined OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). Now, we know that Saudi Arabia contains the largest proven oil reserves in the world, nearly 19.1% of Earth's oil lays in Saudi Arabia. Also, it is the world's largest oil exporter, and ships to countries such as Japan, South Korea, US, China, India, Taiwan and Singapore. Oil in Saudi Arabia makes up: - 40% of the country's gross domestic product - 75% of government revenues - 90% of export receipts How much income is generated from oil revenue? Saudi Arabia made 311.8 billion dollars in 2011 by exporting oil. What are the environmental impacts of oil resource development? In recent years, Saudi Arabia has greatly increased efforts in trying to aid in the reduction of environmental impacts. As always, offshore drilling poses a large threat to the surrounding ecosystems and ocean life. Saudi Arabia has implemented many programs to prevent and provide control if a distaster of this sort were to occur. Does the country use oil revenues to support social programs for it's citizens? Saudi Arabia uses oil revenues to provide a wide range of programs to aid in areas such as improving standards of living and quality of life. Some other focuses also include: -the unemployed -widows and widowers -females who have no living family members to support them -orphans -the disabled -families of those serving custodial sentences -victims of natural disasters Does the country provide aid to help support other less developed countries? According to the GHA (Global Humanitarian Assistance), Saudi Arabia funded amost 52 million dollars towards less developed countries. Also sexual offenses tend to be hard to prove. This could lead to a dark figure in crime. Description of the country Women are treated as minors with little to no Social rights Crime is not statistically a large problem for Saudi Arabia http://www.nationmaster.com/country/sa-saudi-arabia/cri-crime Although criminal activity does not seem to be a problem in Saudi Arabia, Corruption, high unemployment ,and most importantly terroism plague the country. Recent associations with the west have caused deep social tension. Along with the minority Shiite population causing civil unrest, the Saudi police have to be trained, and prepared for many situations.

Transcript: The birthplace of Islam, Saudi Arabia is home to the two holiest shrines located in Mecca and Medina. Located in the Middle East, it is surrounded by Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, and other smaller countries. Being a leading producer of oil and natural gas, it holds more than 20% of the world's proven oil reserves, accounting 95% of oil for exports and 70% of government revenue. It is the largest Arab state in Western Asia (according to land size), constituting the bulk of the Arabian Peninsula. The estimated population is about 27 million. Natural resources include petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, gold, and copper. It has the largest mineral deposits in the Middle East. Oil production in Saudi Arabia began in 1933 and exported in 1939. Every day they extract over 7.5 billion standard cubic feet of natural gas Saudi Arabia's GDP was estimated in 2011 to be $687.7 billion and the GDP per capita was $587.5 billion. Compared to the U.S. where the GDP was an estimated $15.08 trillion and the GDP per capita was $14.83 trillion. Major imports include machinery and equipment, foodstuffs, chemicals, motor vehicles, and textiles. About $120 billion worth of products was imported in 2011. 90% of exports include petroleum and petroleum products. About $364.7 billion worth of goods were exported in 2011 as well. The currency used is called Saudi riyals (SAR) In 2011, the exchange rate of SAR per US dollar was 3.75 Three other economic indicators: The inflation rate in 2011 was at 5% Unemployment was at 10.9% Real GDP was 7.1% Inflation decreased from 2010 into 2011 however real GDP increased. Generally as a whole, prices overall have decreased and more people weren't working. Real GDP measures the value of all final goods and services produced using the prices of a base year, whereas nominal GDP uses current prices. Saudi Arabia's standard of living seems to be high because of the 12.6% of debt in the GDP and high unemployment rates. At one point the U.S. also reached a 10% unemployment rate however it is much larger and consists of more people. A 10.9% unemployment rate in a country with only 27 million people is very high. Although real GDP was at 7.1%, showing that the economy grew, it didn't grow by much. The inflation rate decreased, but it doesn't say much when more people are out of work and cannot afford to buy the wants that they used to. In the U.S. during 2011: Unemployment was 9% Inflation was 3.1% Real GDP was 1.8% Inflation increased from 2010, and both unemployment and GDP decreased. The U.S. also imported more than exported. The rates are all about the same and the standard of living is high in both countries. However the GDP in Saudi Arabia is much higher than that of the U.S., meaning that the economy grew more.

After Rain in Riyadh – Saudi Arabia’s Contemporary Art Biennale Breaks New Ground in 2024

I n December 2021 the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale, Saudi Arabia's first ever art biennale, launched in an industrial zone - JAX – just outside Riyadh. And amidst the angular, functional landscape, something unprecedented happened. A global squadron of local and international artists, 63 in total under the vision of curator Philip Tinari and his team created a compelling multimedia presentation entitled ‘Feeling The Stones’, reflecting on the Kingdom’s rapid metamorphosis into the region’s fastest-accelerating cultural powerhouse, comparing Saudi expansion to that of China’s transformation during the 1980s. Despite the organisational and curatorial acuity of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation and Tinari’s team respectively, it was a risk. Would local audiences, unaccustomed to home-grown contemporary art biennales, respond and engage with the event?

presentation on saudi arabia

As it turned out, they did. Over 100,000 of them, in fact, a significant genuine public engagement, by any metric. And proving it was no fluke, last year’s inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale (set to alternate every other year with the art biennale) at a repurposed terminal in Jeddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport was even more popular, welcoming over 300,000 visitors. Due to local demand was extended to 23 May, a month after the original end date.

Cut to February 2024. The Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale returns to JAX between 20 February and 24 May, this time under the direction of renowned Singapore-based curator, Ute Meta Bauer. And this year’s three-month event is its most ambitious yet. The curatorial theme, ‘After Rain’, digs into the earth, gazes at the sky, and considers the natural environment, through the perspectives of 92 participating artists from across the Kingdom and around the world.

‘After Rain’ might seem ironic, given the biennale’s location, but participating artists have taken up the challenge responded to the curatorial brief with a hot mix of art in a multiplicity of media. And in the Art Lab and Research Room programming, talks, performances, workshops and presentations debate transformation, revitalization and renewal. And as with the Islamic Arts Biennale in 2023, Sotheby’s is supporting the event, presenting talks and screenings during the biennale's run.

At the time of writing, the JAX district is a last-minute bustle of construction chaos familiar to biennales worldwide - artworks are being assembled, installations are being installed and artists are busy arting . But speaking to me, mere weeks before launch on 20 February, the DBF’s CEO Aya Al Bakree is upbeat and happy to preview the shape and dimensions of what will be the most compelling presentation of contemporary art to take place in Riyadh to date.

presentation on saudi arabia

How did the success of the inaugural 2021/2022 Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale shape this 2024 Biennale’s planning? It went very well in terms of participating artists, audience numbers etc. The first edition of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale made a clear statement of our ambition to nurture artistic expression in Saudi Arabia, and to engage local communities with the arts, more than ever before. At the time, the entire biennale model was a relatively new proposition in our country, and it offered a new way for audiences - particularly local ones - to learn, discover, and connect with new themes and artistic practices. Artists and creatives too, have found our biennales important platforms to connect and engage with each other – Ahmed Mater and Armin Linke’s collaborative exploration of futurism in this year’s edition is an example of that.

Our first edition drew over 100,000 visitors, most of whom came from Saudi Arabia - something that is especially noteworthy given that it took place just as pandemic-era restrictions were beginning to be eased. Our inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale [2023] in Jeddah too, was incredibly successful in drawing in local communities, with the vast majority of the 600,000 visitors we welcomed being Saudi Arabian.

"Our inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah was incredibly successful in drawing in local communities, with the vast majority of the 600,000 visitors we welcomed being Saudi Arabian. This showed us that there is an engaged, curious audience eager to participate in cultural discourse"

This showed us that there is an engaged, curious audience eager to participate in cultural discourse and this lesson remained at the front of our minds whilst planning our upcoming contemporary art biennale. For this second edition in fact, we made sure it remains inextricably connected to our national context, and so it has been incredibly inspiring to me to witness curator Ute Meta Bauer’s incredible wealth of knowledge and experience. She travelled all over the Kingdom with her team to learn and open new conversations, learnings that were then interweaved into the essence of this edition.

Another lesson we took from our inaugural editions is the value of public programs. For this edition, we have designed rich and intensely educational masterclasses, workshops and specialised talks. These are intended to forge new opportunities for encounters and dialogues, offering audiences new ways to discover a diverse range of artistic practices. It’s an expansion of the work we began in December 2021 - and an important step in our ongoing journey.

How did the evolution of the 2024 Biennale happen over time, in terms of identifying Ute Meta Bauer as curator and developing the concept ‘After Rain’? The Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale exists to spark new perspectives - perspectives that come about from research and a strong connection to current global and local cultural discourse. Ute Meta Bauer has a wealth of experience working in a range of different contexts. Throughout her career, she has been interested in collaborative modes of working, as a curator and in collaboration, as a framework for artistic practice.

presentation on saudi arabia

This approach, combined with her perspective working from Singapore, gave her a sensitive, nuanced view of the Saudi context; the histories of contemporary art here, and the importance of framing a transnational, cross-cultural narrative for the Biennale. Along with other members of the curatorial team, Ute conducted a series of research trips across Saudi Arabia to meet with artists and other creative practitioners whose work is rooted in highly specific places. This informed the curatorial framework of the Biennale and led to the selection of its title, After Rain . The title is meant to evoke a feeling of growth and renewal, specifically the particular smell that comes from the ground after a rain shower. In Saudi Arabia, where human life has always been closely tied to the natural surroundings, this feeling has special resonance. The title also refers to the exciting changes taking place in Saudi Arabia, which is in full evidence in Riyadh as well as in Diriyah. Working with an exceptional international team of curators, Ute has shaped an artistic direction for the Biennale that is inclusive, strongly multisensorial and multifaceted.

What aspects of the Biennale are you personally most looking forward to? I don’t want to give away too much – I’d like your readers to come and visit! - but I will say that I am especially excited to see our local communities engage and connect with the range of international perspectives at this edition of the Biennale. We’re bringing artists from around the world to Diriyah, while also giving Saudi artists a platform with visibility. In its second edition, the Biennale has taken on an even wider resonance, that builds on the success of our inaugural exhibition two years ago. At its core, the Biennale is meant to create new connections and foster dialogue across contexts and cultures, so giving Saudi audiences a chance to experience art from around the world, as in, bringing art into their daily lives - is a highlight of our work, and something that I can’t wait to see continue to evolve.

"Unlike many other biennales, The Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale should offer visitors an opportunity to explore a wider experience of Saudi creativity beyond the exhibition"

presentation on saudi arabia

Talking about the JAX district hosting the Biennale - what makes this area especially suited for the Biennale? How have works been integrated into the landscape? Underpinning our approach as a Foundation is the re-imagining and repurposing of urban spaces into venues for culture and creativity. JAX is a perfect example, as a former industrial space transformed into a home for creativity, it offers a remarkable context for us. It’s important that not only should the Biennale unfold in an existing space that has been adapted to a new use but also, unlike many other biennales, it should offer visitors an opportunity to explore a wider experience of Saudi creativity beyond the exhibition. So, the repurposing of JAX reflects the layers of history underpinning creative practices in Saudi Arabia today. Also, there are artist studios located alongside the Biennale’s exhibition galleries, adding to the district’s energy as a dynamic incubator.

Diriyah is also home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of At-Turaif, a former royal residence of the House of Saud and seat of the First Saudi State, and the Wadi Hanifa seasonal riverbed. JAX offers views of Diriyah, an eloquent statement of the growth of the birthplace of Saudi Arabia as a whole. In this wider setting, the Biennale’s site embodies a forward-looking transformation that remains rooted in the past, as well as in the natural environment.

presentation on saudi arabia

There was a huge amount of interest locally during the Islamic Arts Biennale with record visitor numbers. Do you anticipate similar audiences for this event and how have you been interacting with the local community? And how do you contextualise and present works in unfamiliar forms or from foreign artists? Since April 2023 we have been producing the ‘Biennale Encounters’ program, for this edition specifically, to connect members of the public with artists and other creative practitioners through talks, workshops, and other events. The program is specifically meant to engage with local audiences and invites them to explore the Biennale’s content and the ideas that will be on view. We have welcomed over three hundred participants so far, which speaks to the steps we have taken to create an inclusive environment where members of the community can feel close to the Biennale’s exhibition and activities. This is a Biennale for everyone - it is free of charge and designed to be friendly and accessible, and as such, we’ve designed talks, masterclasses, workshops and activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. The perspectives on view at the Biennale and in the accompanying public programs create a ‘safe space’ for audiences to learn, ask questions, interrogate the world around us and connect with each other.

What do you hope that this Biennale, which focuses on themes of nature, environment, will achieve in terms of highlighting ecological issues in the Kingdom? The Biennale’s title and curatorial theme emphasise the connection we all have to the natural environment. We experience this connection on a deep, almost intuitive level through our five senses. By remaining sensitive to this relationship, we can ensure that the ecological issues of our time are always at the forefront of our thinking and actions. Saudi Arabia is home to a range of different ecosystems, including the shores of the Red Sea, deserts, and river valleys. The variety of landscapes here has fostered different ways of living and different histories. Many of the Saudi artists included in the Biennale draw from their home environments to form distinct perspectives on the past, present, and future of our relationship with the natural world. If we consider these perspectives together and alongside visions of nature and human society from around the globe, as the Biennale invites us to do, we will be thinking in terms of ecology and sustainability in a range of contexts, no matter how small.

Paris presentation

FIFA unveiled details of Saudi Arabia's bid to host the 2034 World Cup on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 in Paris. Growing Together, the official slogan of the bid received the full support of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

We are working together to materialise Saudi Arabia's dream of hosting the FIFA World Cup into a tangible reality - according to our official bid book, said Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Minister of Sport and President of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

These plans will combine our rich football heritage with our deep passion for the game and ensure Saudi Arabia's success as the first nation to host a 48-team tournament in one country - he added. Yasser Al-Misehal, president of the Saudi Football Federation, said it was a natural step in the development of Saudi football and the sports sector.

Riyadh, the main city of the championship

Stadiums beyond this earth

Saudi Arabia, known for its natural resources, is placing importance on infrastructural and technological development. Hosting the World Cup is an opportunity for it to show a new face - an open, dynamic and innovative country. The plan includes five cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar, Abha and the futuristic NEOM project.

A key element of the bid is the stadiums - as many as 15 of which are to be used during the tournament. The vast majority of these venues are to be redesigned or extensively upgraded to meet the highest global standards. Riyadh, the country's capital, is where the biggest events are planned, including the opening matches and the final. In Jeddah, known for its beautiful beaches and modern buildings, a stadium with unique architecture will be built to be a symbol of the new Arabia.

Saudi Arabia has unveiled its bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, with as many as 15 stadiums included. Here is a brief description of each of them:

King Salman International Stadium, Riyadh (new stadium) - This spectacular new stadium will have the largest capacity in Saudi Arabia and will become the main sporting venue and home of the national team.
