First of all: what is it, exactly?

Mixed media art involves mixing different creative mediums to create work that incorporates two or more art forms. For example, you can add sculpture to your painting, or draw on top of photography prints. Mixed media is all about breaking the boundaries between different art forms.

Artists need to look at everything as a potential canvas. If you are a traditional artist who works with oil-based paints, for example, perhaps you could try painting on a woodblock, or a piece of furniture, or found objects like books or antique toys. You can print out your creations on different materials and paint over them, or paste them onto a form to create a mixed media sculpture. These mixed media creations also make a wonderful addition to your art portfolio .

When starting your first mixed media creation, feel be to be playful—and get messy! The goal is to learn how the mediums can interact with each other, so don’t be afraid to experiment. It’s better to go too far and pull back for your next piece than to be too timid and never know what the mediums you use are capable of. As Ernest Hemingway said, “Write drunk and edit sober.” The same goes for making mixed media art!

From alcohol-based paints to salt (!), Pinterest is the place to browse innovative techniques and open your mind to the mixed media art possibilities. Once that dried, I applied Meyspring Pigment Powders mixed with Pebeo Varnish , layering colors to build visual depth. Next, I enhanced the textural drama by adding Paint Couture Glaze, which settled beautifully into the textured crevices. To add a sparkling finish, I sprinkled glass glitter into the crevices of the cracks, catching the light and enhancing the piece’s dimensional quality. Finally, I sealed and highlighted these textures by carefully applying epoxy resin around the raised areas. This combination of mediums—texture medium, pigment powders in varnish, paint glaze, glass glitter, and resin—exemplifies how mixed media can transform a simple wooden panel into a dynamic, texturally rich artwork.

Each element in a mixed media piece serves a purpose, whether it’s to add color, create depth, introduce texture, or encapsulate a moment. The freedom to experiment with materials like fabric, paper, wood, and metal in conjunction with traditional paint or drawing mediums allows for endless creative possibilities. Section 1 of this course introduces you to Elli Milan’s Abstract Realism style, developed through decades of artistic practice. Get hands-on with her mixed media collage method, beginning with layering collage papers and textures. You’ll transition to painting with acrylics before finishing up with oil paints.

In Section 2, you’ll use water and inks to create a stunning painting with Dimitra Milan. She starts with tips on finding and creating source images so you’re empowered to paint anything you imagine. Mixed media is such a broad, all-encompassing topic that it is easy to become overwhelmed before you even start experimenting. During Introduction to Mixed Media, Stephenie Hamen will take the mystery out of mixed media and help you get started making art.

In this class, Stephenie will cover all the basics and teach you how to lay out a mixed media art piece, step-by-step and item-by-item. You’ll learn about common materials and how each media within the piece works and interacts with the others. 

You’ll learn how to:

• Create a collage base on canvas
• Affix crayon wax and beeswax to a piece
• Use stencils to add texture and/or imagery
• Add texture with gesso

I liked that the instructor endorsed the idea of using items that you have onhand; repurposing old books and other items to use until you really know where your style lies. Teach Your Students to Add Layers of Meaning With Mixed-Media Portraits

It can be difficult to come up with new ideas for portrait lessons. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with the yearbook-style graphite drawings so many of our students complete. But what if we could make things a little more exciting? One way to do this is to help students explore various drawing mediums by assigning a mixed media portrait.

His lesson example, seen below, got a great discussion going among course participants who immediately began to think of ways it could be adapted for middle school and elementary students.

Joseph developed the lesson by thinking about how he could push students beyond neutral angled portraits. By pushing the envelope, Joseph found he was able to achieve greater engagement and “buy in” from his students. Furthermore, encouraging the use of mixed media in layers helps teach students about the essence of each material.

Here’s how to present a similar lesson to your students.

To complete this lesson, it’s helpful if your students have a grasp of the elements and principles..

Tilstra starts all of his courses with this foundational information. He says, “All of my classes get a dose of the Elements and Principles at the beginning of the semester. It does not matter what class it is. Even the advanced classes need a refresher when the year starts. My philosophy is that the Elements and Principles are like the canvas we artists stretch our work over. Without the Elements and Principles, the work has no substance. I want my students to have a strong foundation built on these basic concepts when they leave my class and go on to college.”

After your students have a good grasp of this foundational knowledge, it’s time to dive into some art history. For this lesson, Tilstra chose Surrealism. After students have some background knowledge, they can begin creating their portraits.

Requiring different layers makes students think about their artwork in a deeper way.

Joseph required the following three layers in this assignment.

• A background with pattern and a surrealist element
• A portrait taken from an interesting angle
• A personal symbol layered over the top of everything

Of course, you could add or subtract layers depending on your students’ needs or adapt the lesson in other ways. For instance, at the elementary level, you could have students cut out their photos and collage them on top of painted backgrounds.

In this particular work, Joseph juxtaposed a blue sky that depicts deep space with a flat pattern built from geometric shapes in the background. The use of colored pencil and markers in these areas further emphasized the contrast between the two.

Joseph intentionally filled the space on the page with his portrait so it remains the focal point of the piece. Notice the beautiful values he achieved in the portrait by beginning with a black and white colored pencil drawing under a colored layer. Finally, Joseph considered personal symbolism and added a fish to complete this layered mixed media work.

Using Mixed Media Art Lessons to Engage Students

Thanks for joining us for another of our free art lessons for kids . Today we are discussing ways to use mixed media art to develop engaging lessons for young students in Hillsboro and across Portland.

Why Do Kids Love Mixed Media Art Lessons?

Mixed media art is a fun, creative way to engage students with art styles, techniques and materials. With access to a range of art supplies, children are encouraged to experiment with colors, textures and shapes as part of a broader concept.

A mixed media art project typically involves layering materials to create an appealing artwork. Of course, for younger students not used to working with an array of materials, the final piece could lose its form. However, through the process of experimentation, children learn about problem-solving and how colors and textures complement each other.

Following structured lessons also encourages experimentation within certain boundaries. For example, limiting a project to three materials helps a child think about how the items will work well together. Students must employ creative thinking, visual-spatial skills and controlled risk-taking to build a cohesive piece.

Examples of Mixed Media Art Lessons

All you really need to create an engaging mixed media art lesson is art supplies and a concept. Here are some easy ideas to get you started.

• Mixed media painting – Follow our guide on mixed media painting with Carolyn Pettitt .
• Nature project – Collect leaves in different shapes and sizes, add paint and layer them onto a canvas.
• Animal art – Combine beads, paper clips, buttons and other supplies to create a cat, butterfly or other animals.
• Seasonal designs – Cut out Halloween or Christmas images from magazines and integrate them with an original painting.
• 3D art – Use Play-Doh, yarn, buttons and other simple materials to build a 3D sculpture.
• Science project – Create a solar system artwork using paints, canvas and polystyrene balls.

Mixed media is the use of a variety of media in a work of art such as paint, collage, and graphite. Over the course of the last 5 years, I have taught mixed media to hundreds of artists in my Sausalito studio. I am excited to offer this class on-line so join wherever you are in the world.

Beginners welcome to my online mixed media art workshop..

The class is broken down into 12 bite-size video modules (plus 5 bonus modules) so that you can apply what you learn to your artwork and then move to the next class when you are ready. An illustrated, detailed booklet is provided as a resource to accompany the course guiding you to success.

When I was age 10, I loved painting. Every Saturday, I walked a mile to take a class at the Art League in Oak Park, Il. The time would fly by as I was in the flow. My art was colorful and free. At age 12, I had a critical teacher and I stopped painting and my creativity went into hiding. To paraphrase Julia Cameron from her book The Artist's Way, if you really want to know what you are supposed to do in life, look at what you loved as a child. After 20 years running a successful cooking business, I sold it in 2017 to focus full-time on my art practice. I took an art class and was the worst one in the class, but committed to getting better and got an art studio in the ICB Building. I wanted to reclaim something that had been dormant my whole life. It has been a true homecoming. Many of my students report this same kind of story - that they loved art as a child but lost sight of it for various reasons.

Prepare the panel.

In Module 1, you paint your panels and learn why house paint is often used in mixed media which is a great way to make your art budget go further.

Making Your Own Scraps

Making your own scraps allows you to break free since you are not painting directly onto your work. In this module, you will learn to make your own scraps with the squeeze bottle, stamps, stencils, rubbings, pastels and graphite. Then incorporate these scraps into your work.

Collage and Paint

In Module 3, you will learn to lay down papers in a no-think, free, intuitive manner.  You will learn best practices for getting your papers down flat with no bubbles. You will also learn techniques and tools for applying paint.

Design & Composition

We will review elements of good design.  If you follow these tips successfully, you will make better work. Then you will learn how to use your phone to see if your design is working and you can test out moves before you put them into play.

Creating great texture is important in mixed media work. In this module, you will learn a few techniques to age your work and excavate into the layers previously created.

Image Transfer/Washes/Marks

In this module, we will focus on image transfers (transferring a magazine image onto your work).  You will also learn about stamping, washes, tissue paper, drips, and making great marks using graphite, Woodys and acrylic markers.

Getting Unstuck

I have witnessed students getting stuck when they are in their analyzer and are thinking too much. In this module, I will discuss why you may be stuck and provide a roadmap and exercises for getting unstuck.

Finishing Touches

In this module we will review ways to know when you are finished with your piece. We will discuss a few finishes to bring your piece to perfection!

MORE 4TH GRADE MIXED MEDIA DONUTS!!

Students learned about the artist wayne thiebaud and his artwork for inspiration on this lesson , this art lesson took (4) 40 minute art classes to finish..

Students were introduced to Wayne Thiebaud and viewed a PowerPoint on some of his artwork and learned about his life. Students folded a sheet of heavyweight tagboard in half horizontally, to create a crease to separate the table from the wall for their picture. They then drew various types of straight lines, (creating different lines from the wall and table the donut would be on) and colored in their stripes with a thick layer of oil pastel.

Students finished up their oil pastel background and if there was time, started drawing their donut.

Students painted the top section of their papers with one color liquid tempera paint and then immediately used a texture comb (using a recycled cut gift card) to scrape some of the paint off, creating new lines on their artwork and texture. They repeated the same process on the bottom half but painted using a different color. Once finished, they were left to dry until the following art class.

Students glued on half of a cut paper doilie along the crease. They drew a donut on separate 4×6” paper and colored with markers or colored pencils, then cut the donut out and glued on their doilie. For a final touch, students added puffy paint sprinkles all over their donuts to add even more texture!

One of my all time favorite lessons for 4th grade!

• Describe what else can you do to add to the artwork that doesn’t involve glue? i.e. paint, draw, color etc. 
• What qualities are unique to mixed media vs. drawing, painting etc by themselves?

The fabulous thing about Mixed Media Art is that it can literally be done by any age group and with numerous types of supplies many of which you may already have, or can easily acquire for free!

The main idea here is encouraging play and layers. I also encourage my students to choose a focal point. My example at the top is the kitten. It is the first thing your eye is drawn to and makes the rest of the scene make sense.

Use words from magazines etc, but also use a marker. It is important to have something drawn or written by hand. This adds a whole other dimension to the artwork.

Most importantly, have creative fun!

Draw a surrealist landscape that includes:

• Depth - background, middle-ground, and foreground
• At least three trees
• All objects should look three-dimensional and realistic in appearance
• Drawing should be surrealistic in nature - dream-like subject matter

Media to use:

• Black illustration board
• Oil pastels
• Colored pencils

Visual characteristics of surrealism are:

• The element of fantasy
• Metaphysical atmosphere
• Dreamlike imagery depicting mysterious environments and landscapes
• Representation with almost photographic precision. Hyper-realistic rendering of form and volume
• A distortion of reality with contradictory elements and random associations
• Eccentric, shocking, and mysterious
• Eerie creatures and fantastical forms from everyday objects
• The use of the visual form to express and translate the unconscious
• Experimental techniques and forms such as collage, mixed media, doodling, etc.

WI State Standards:

• AA Cr11h Plan: Formulate original concepts by practice, experimentation, and revision. (planning/experimentation)
• AA Cr12h Make: Create works of art that introduce students to media, care of tools, and basic craftsmanship skills. (skills)
• AA Pr10h Develop Meaning: Curate a body of work incorporating personal, historical and contemporary art to communicate one or more points of view. (aesthetics / communication)

Learning targets:

• Use planning (sketching) to develop a unique outcome
• Create an original artwork
• C ombine multiple media to achieve an aesthetic effect.
• Learn about surrealism
• Create an art piece in surrealistic style
• Exercise drawing trees
• Learn to paint with bleach
• Learn to achieve a necessary value using bleach over a black surface
• Learn to apply highlights and shadows on a black illustration board

in a nutshell

1. Standard AA Cr11h ( planning /experimentation) : Start with sketching. Come up with a theme that would involve trees. Draw thumbnails of multiple ideas and approaches. Consider transforming trees into something else. This is your most creative part of the assignment.

2. Standards AA Cr12h ( skills ) : Make sure you use all required media in a proper way. Practice it, experiment with it. Application of the media is important to achieve a realistic (surrealistic) feel.

3. AAPr10h (aesthetics/ communication ) : Make sure there is a "twist" in your landscape that communicates "surrealism"!

Research and sketching

Standard AA Cr11h ( planning /experimentation) :

Spend 2-3 hours sketching surrealist landscapes.

Your landscape should include:

• At least 3 trees
• Depth: FOREGROUND, MID-GROUND, and BACKGROUD)
• Landscape should be surrealist

Final sketch should look realistic, but "with a twist". Create a dream-like reality.

Research surrealists and their artwork for inspiration.

Sketch should be turned in as a part of the grade.

Standards AA Cr12h ( skills )

Draw your landscape on a black illustration board.

Your drawing should be based on your sketch.

Use HB or H pencil:

• very fine lines

Add as many details as you can at this point.

Standards AA Cr12h ( skills ) :

Use a regular household bleach to lighten up some areas, to support the light source, and to create textures.

Use a small scrap piece of the same type illustration board as your drawing to practice the bleaching technique.

Use a brush or a cotton swab to apply bleach.

Make sure you wash brush really well after you are done to prevent the bristles to deteriorate.

Give it some time for the bleach to "eat" the color. It may take up to a minute or more.

The lightness of the bleached area will depend on the amount of bleach applied.

Always let one layer (or wash) dry completely to reveal the actual color before you apply a next layer.

Make a cup of diluted bleach for the areas that you want to be lightened gently.

Start with water, then add a little of bleach.

You can control the intensity of the bleach power by adding more water or bleach.

Different manufacturer illustration boards will result in different bleached color.

It depends on the dyes that were used in the process. So always try the czme brand scrap piece as your main drawing.

Some boards are more resistant to bleach than others.

Bleach strength may vary as well. So always try first!

You can use bleach to add texture to your trees.

You can emphasize this texture later with colored pencils.

colored pencils & oil pastels

Use color pencils for coloring details and backgrounds.

You won't be able to use oil pastels for small areas and stay precise.

Leave oil pastels for the foreground textute or simple backgrounds.

Keep in mind that you can use oil pastels over colored pencils, but not the other way around.

• Use small pencil strokes
• Blend and mix multiple colors
• Strokes should not be obvious - they should support the form of the object and its texture

Apply colors, values, and textures to the trees - make them look round.

Each tree and its parts should have at least 3 values:

Treat each part of a tree as a cylinder - apply values to support the "roundness" of the tree and its parts.

Do not outline your objects - use value contrasts and shadows .

Keep the light source and light-and-dark pattern consistent throughout the drawing.

Make sure that if your light is coming from the right, all shadows should be on the left, etc.

That should be applied to all objects.

Apply colors, values, and texture to the leaves.

Remember how to draw tree? ( here )

• Tree crown should be three-dimensional, not flat.
• Tree crown can be any color

Details will make your drawing a success.

Use oil pastels to color close-up objects.

Pastels are also great for foreground or background.

• Oil pastels should create contrasts and color blending.
• Use only small strokes when working with oil pastels
• Use at least 2-3 colors for each shape
• Use oil pastels to support the forms (different values) and textures (strokes)

Heart Art – Mixed Media Lesson

Jim dine is an american pop artist. he did a series of painting of everyday objects including things like hammers, robes, & hearts. this project is loosely inspired from jim dine’s heart paintings., i wanted a valentine’s day art project that incorporated hearts & art history, so learning about pop art & dine’s was a great combination. we also reviewed repetition (patterns), warm & cool colors. watercolor & crayon resist paintings are always fun to do.

Supplies: 12×18″ tagboard, oil pastels or crayons, watercolors, ruler

• Draw a heart that goes into all 4 sections.
• Use a black oil pastel to outline the heart, then use your finger to smudge the pastel toward the background.
