'Indian 2' Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad; Find Out From Viewers' Words

After a long wait, Kamal Haasan and Shankar's ambitious film 'Indian 2' is hitting the screens worldwide on Friday, July 12.

It is a sequel to 'Indian 2' which was released in 1996. The latest instalment is much bigger than the first part. Another part of the movie will be released next year.

Kamal Haasan returns as Senapati, an anti-corruption crusader and vigilante who had killed his own son in the 'Indian'. The latest flick has Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, SJ Suryah, Bobby Simha, Brahmanandam, Samthuthirakani among others. It also features the late Vivekh and Manobala.

The film has Anirudh's music, Ravi Varman's cinematography and Sreekar Prasad's editing.

Story: In 'Indian 2,' the sequel maintains the excitement of its predecessor while continuing the core theme of fighting injustice. The storyline picks up where "Indian" left off, with Senapathy, a former freedom fighter turned vigilante, returning to combat widespread corruption in the country.

Spurred by public demand, Senapathy reemerges to champion justice, teaming up with a young man who exposes corrupt politicians through internet videos.

The trailer opens with scenes depicting widespread crimes and scams across India, narrated by a woman's voice that highlights issues like unemployment and corruption. Siddharth's character reflects on his childhood hero, Senapathy, who has been in hiding but returns dramatically.

Senapathy takes on corrupt businessmen and enemies, engaging in intense fights and using disguises to outsmart them. When questioned about his methods, Senapathy defends his forceful actions as necessary to save the nation, in contrast to Siddharth's character's preference for Gandhian nonviolence.

Venky Reviews: #Indian2 is an outdated and tedious movie. Though the movie tries to give honest messages, it's done in a boring way with no proper emotion and drama at all.

Shankar tried to repeat the screenplay of his old movies but fails to recreate the magic big time. All of the emotions are completely artificial and feel like a serial drama. The film had a good start for about 20 minutes along with Senapathys entry but continues to go down hill after that.

The grandeur and production values are nice. Anirudh had no scope to give an impactful score. While you can atleast sit through the first half, the second half doesn't give you that chance. Disaster! #Bharateeyudu2

#Indian2 Strictly Average 1st Half!

Film starts off well with building an emotional set-up but then goes down a predictable and routine path. So far reminds us of Shankars old screenplay structure but the routine screenplay style makes it less impactful. Needs a good 2nd half #Bharateeyudu2 Kamal Hassan is doing well. Grandeur and Production Values stand out in the first half. Anirudhs BGM is pretty ineffective so far.

Sai Reviews: Better second half but that really is not saying much. Shankar delves into the plot and Siddharth's arc is interesting but it's dunked in loads of syrupy melodrama and messy action. Shankar stages everything with as much grandeur but the outdated-ness is felt sorely. Everything feels like a sore ripoff of a Tamil blockbuster 10 years ago. It's unapologetically lavish and Herculean, yes, but at the cost of the entire movie? Where's the substance? Not really looking forward to this second half. The Sivaji reference halfway was more entertaining than the entire movie. Alr people have begun comparing it with Darbar and Annaatthe here, so yk the level at how much it's disappointing

Chonik: Done with show of #Indian2 #Bharateeyudu2, 2nd half was very disappointing. Though the idea behind movie is good, it was delivered in a bad & boring way. The setup was completely wasted, & Shankar sir lost his touch. As a big fan of his work, I was very disappointed.

Kalki 2898 AD (Hindi) movie review: Nag Ashwin offers a chaotic sci-fi epic; stellar 2nd half redeems a dull beginning

Kalki 2898 ad (hindi) movie review: nag ashwin's film is a heady mix of mythology, science, action and fiction that works in parts..

Kalki 2898 AD (Hindi) movie review: Bring a South and North crossover film, and it's enough to get the movie goers excited. Kalki 2898 AD enjoyed all the pre-buzz for its superlative action, VFX, storyline and what not... but the 3-hour long film turns out to be rather chaotic and complicated, and it confuses you more than you can comprehend. We've seen enough and more 'good vs evil' stories in India cinema, so the basic outline of Kalki 2898 AD is nothing extraordinary. You didn't understand the trailer? Wait till you watch the film, you might just come out of the theatre still feeling the same - not understanding it one bit!

A convoluted plot

Writer-director Nag Ashwin's wild and wicked premise of blending reality with fiction tests your patience. At first, it might look like a great idea to start the film with the climax of Kurukshetra battle where Ashwatthama was cursed by Lord Krishna to live till eternity to understand his mistake yet give him a chance at redemption. But as the story progresses, and more fictional elements take over, you realise how lame it actually is to have such a convoluted plot that it almost becomes impossible to absorb it.

Six thousand years after the Kurukshetra battle, we are taken to an absurd world with three fictional places — Kashi, Complex and Shambala. Each with a purpose. But what's that? We don't know. All that's told to us is that Kashi is the only city that exists and it's ruled by Supreme Yaskin ( Kamal Haasan ), an evil force that operates from Complex (an inverted pyramid hovering over the city). Yaskin wants a serum from a fertile woman.

Here enters an impregnated lab subject SUM-80 aka Sumathi (Deepika Padukone), who escapes from Complex, and bounty hunter Bhairava (Prabhas) is out to catch her along with his AI droid sidekick BU-JZ-1 aka Bujji (voiceover by Keerthy Suresh). He encounters Ashwatthama ( Amitabh Bachchan ) who must protect and rescue Sumathi at all costs, as she is bearing the unborn child, Kalki, the tenth avatar of Hindu god Vishnu, who is believed to have descended to earth to protect the world from evil forces. That's the core of Kalki 2898 AD, but it stretches a little over three hours.

An overdose of action

The first half is an absolute snoozefest with so many dull scenes and mindless action with laser guns that you wonder why on earth are these people fighting. A little more focus on human drama would have been better here. There are characters that come and go, and you can't figure what's unfolding on screen in those action sequences one after the other.

Even as the first half gets over, we don't know what the story is, where it is headed and what are these characters up to. It's the second half that intrigues you and has some exhilarating scenes. The action sequences between Prabhas and indestructible Amitabh Bachchan are brilliantly choreographed and form the highlight of the film. Especially, their face-off in the last 20 minutes helps the film to redeem itself to an extent.

A visual spectacle

A visual spectacle by all means, Kalki is equipped with world-class VFX that doesn't disappoint. With sets mounted on a huge scale, there are spectacular sequences of large structures, mid-air action and robotic characters that add to the sci-fi drama. Kudos to Djordje Stojiljkovic for a brilliant cinematography.

Even when visually, everything is working fine, Kalki suffers from an inconsistent pace, and looks patchy at several places. There are times you are invested in a character or a scene, and the screenplay abruptly shifts to a different track altogether.

Also, there is a series of cameos — Vijay Deverakonda, SS Rajamouli, Mrunal Thakur, Dulquer Salmaan, Ram Gopal Verma, among many others. But you don't care less when the story is so weak and the screenplay, so scattered.

The performances

Prabhas might have been sincere in whatever he does onscreen, but there's no depth or substance in his character arch. Firstly, he gets the most underwhelming entry scene and then to see him do lame comedy and crack jokes that don't land, I felt bad for him. Saaho and Radhe Shyam had already done that damage, Kalki didn't need to again put him in that caricature-ish space.

Deepika is convincing and holds her ground, though she has very little to do in terms of dialogues and action. She is mostly being rescued by someone or the other but her screen presence makes you feel her pain. Kamal Haasan is there for barely two scenes but his prosthetic makeup makes it worth the talk. Trusting the makers when they say Part 2 will have more of him.

Saswata Chatterjee as Commander Manas and Anil George as Counsellor Bani have pivotal roles, but never standout. And it's best to not even discuss about Disha Patani's sidekick role that only added to the boredom in the first half.

Amid all this, it's Amitabh Bachchan's performance that truly bowls you over and leaves a lasting impact. For his age, the kind of rigorous action he does on screen, and that outer exterior of an 8-feel tall man that he walks with, is outstanding.

Filled with references

Nag Ashwin seems to have picked several nuggets from Bollywood, Hollywood and other south language films, and you can't help notice these references. The labs in Complex and Yaskin's serum injecting scenes remind you of Vivek Oberoi's Kaal from Krrish 3. Prabhas pushing a button on his shoe and flying in the air is another version of Hrithik Roshan's Krrish.

Refugees and rebels in Shambala praying collectively to a holy tree instantly paints a visual from Avatar. And a fight sequence with Punjabi song in the background proves that Arjan Vailly hangover from Animal continues.

In a nutshell, Kalki is a heady mix of mythology, science, fiction and action that works in parts, but for most of its runtime, you feel you have been sitting in the theatre for days. All I can say it, if I manage to survive this, you may want to give it a shot only for its scale, visual appeal and watching Amitabh Bachchan pack a punch.

MS DHONI : THE UNTOLD STORY MOVIE REVIEW

The magnum Opus we've all been waiting for! Directed by Neeraj Pandey, the film features Sushant Singh Rajput, Disha Patani, Kiara Advani in the lead along with Bhumika Chawla and Anupam Kher among others in critical roles. So did the film win the match? Find out.  

What is the film about? Without any need of mentioning, the film is a commentary on the life of the man the nation celebrates and holds responsible in every single match. Probably, it is also a portrayal of the religious fanfare the game of cricket wields in India.  

What works? Everything works to the detail. Special credits to the director for not compromising on the technical details. It was commendable to see Sushanth's face masked into original match and ceremony footages. All cheers to the cast, Sushanth seemed to easily step into the shoes of Dhoni. The script and screenplay deserve applause for celebrating the struggles of a sportsman. More than anything, it's the subject of the film, the man and his incredible journey that have worked in this film. Love you MSD!  

Well? Overall, the film is a celebration. A celebration of one man’s triumph that leads the nation to its victory. It’s a celebration of all the people behind him. It’s a celebration that is sure to leave you feeling euphoric after watching the film.

SONGS REVIEW

MS Dhoni is an upcoming biographical film starring Sushanth Singh Rajput, Disha Patani and Anupam Kher in lead roles. Music for the film is composed by Amaal Malik.  

Singer - Armaan Malik

Lyrics - Manoj Muntashir.  

The album begins on a relaxing note with a thought provoking number rendered par excellence by Armaan Malik. Manoj Muntashir’s lyrics are quite inspirational and speak of life’s truths on a lighter note. The song has all the makings of a road trip number with its swift guitar touches and progressive rhythm. The electric guitar solo in the first interlude is another good experiment by the composer.

Lyrics - Manoj Muntashir  

The trance mode continues with a beautiful solo sung by the talented singer Palak Mucchal. Despite the resemblance with Shreya Ghoshal’s vocals, she manages to pull off this wonderful composition in style. The chord progression is quite captivating and keeps the listener engaged throughout. The interludes maintain the feel good factor in gripping fashion.

Jab Tak  

Singer - Armaan Malik.

It is time for some inspiration and pace with another fantastic number sung by Armaan Malik. For quite a while Bollywood songs have had mesmerizing lyrics and this song is no exception. The trance-like guitar strums and string section does the job quite effectively. The song is a modern emotional ride in the midst of everything melodious and pleasant.

Phir Kabhi   

Singer - Arijit Singh 

A laid back unplugged track in the velvety vocals of Arijit Singh arrives next in supreme style. The song would remain a highlight of this album for its refreshing honesty, innocence and brilliant presentation. The lyrics score full marks once again and Arijit Singh carries the entire song on his shoulders with his magical vocals. The deep philosophical aspect of the lyrics is another worth mentioning aspect.

Singer - Siddharth Basrur.

A paced up inspirational track is mandatory for any sports based film and this song makes complete justice to the theme with fiery electric guitars, live drumming, and breathtaking attitude. Siddarth’s vocals have a tinge of sultriness along with power and impact. The song has all the makings of an inspiring sports number with the trendy attitude topped over it.

Jab Tak (Redux)  

The alternate version of the most subtle composition arrives again with additional layers of electric guitars- this time with more vigor and pleasantness. The song creates a captivating ambiance which has been missing in otherwise loud Bollywood numbers of the current age. The interludes are soft, soothing and at the same time make their presence strongly felt.

Padhoge Likhoge  

Singer - Ananya Nanda & Adithyan A Prithviraj

Lyrics - Manoj Muntashir   

A quirky element occurs in the finale with a fun-filled number sung in the innocent vocals of Ananya Nanda and Adithyan. The song breathes freshness and stunning innocence throughout. The percussions are essentially folk-based and would appeal to the masses quite well. This song gives the album a fun aspect in terms of peppy music.
