La Vuelta 2024 – Teams and riders

  • Presentation
  • The Team in pictures

This team actually holds the record for the most participations at Spain's Grand Tour of cycling. Their 37th consecutive Vuelta will see some of the best names in their team compete. Valverde Alejandro obtained an incredible victory in 2015 at Vejer de la Frontera. Riders such as Jose Luis Laguia, Pedro Delgado, Abraham Olano, Pablo Lastras, Maria Jimenez are only some of the ones who contributed to the victory tally than comprises over 50 partial triumphs.

Their 6th Vuelta is close and that's great for a young team that was established in 2011. They fusioned with Radio Shack 5 years ago and one significant victory in La Vuelta is Chris Vuelta's 1st place in the general classification. The team also has a total of 6 stage victories to their name. In 2015, Van Poppel, Frank Schleck, and Jasper Stuyven won three different stages.

Tinkoff is a 2015 podium holder at Vuelta a Espana. Rafal Majka was 3rd in the general classification. Tinkoff was established in 1998 using a Danish license.

Their first victory at Vuelta took place in 2005 with Nicki Sorensen. Undoubtedly, huge victories are linked to the name of their leader - Alberto Contador - who won the 2012 and 2014 editions. Another prominent name is Carlos Sastre, who was on the podium in 2008, 2007, and 2005.

Chris Froome won the Tour de France in 2013 and 2015. He took podium in the Vuelta 2014 and even confessed his preference for the Spain Grand Tour. As part of Team Sky, he also took podium in 2010, with his teammate Bradley Wiggins. Among the names you need to remember when betting we can mention Chris Sutton, Chris Froome (in 2011), Kiryienka Vasil (2013), and Roche Nicolas (in 2015).

One of the most prominent names in the Netherlands since the mid 90s is now getting ready for its 19th participation of the Vuelta. Their only absence happened in 2002. Rabobank was the first sponsor of the team, but Belkin (in 2013) and LottoNL-Jumbo (in 2015) took over.

The team has won for the last time in 2007 through Denis Menchov. World Champon Freire Oscar won the stages that arrived in Logrono, Santiago, and Reinosa in the same year. Bart Jan Lindeman won at La Alpujarra last year.

Established in 2009, this team is heir to Tinkoff's first project. It debuted in the Vuelta in 2010 and showed an impressive fighting spirit ever since: impressive mountain climbs, fast sprinters and great tactics. Joaquim Rodriguez is their best climber. He was on the podium three times in the final classification of the Spain Grand Tour of cycling. Rodriguez was close to be a champion in 2010, 2012, and 2015. He has 9 stage triumphs. Dai Moreno (2013 and 2011) and Menchov denis (2012) are two other key cyclists.

Their best performance in 2015 was Tom Dumoulin's fight against Astana, when he could have become the first Dutchman to win the race. The squad debuted in 2011 and has a few partial victories in the Vuelta. Their win in Madrid last year brought their total number of victories to 10. Marcel Kittel, John Degenkolb and Warren Barguil are prominent names in their team.

The only African team at this edition will be competing for its 3rd consecutive time. Formerly a Professional-Continental squad, Dimension Data took over MTN-Qhubeka. A notable name in their team is 24-year-old Louis Meintjes who obtained the 10th place in the 2015 Vuelta's final general classification. However, their best rider is Kristian Sbaragli, the sprint winner who dominated the stage at Castellon de la Plana.

This team put Australia on the map of pro cycling and has been competing in the World Tour since 2012. The team is managed by Gerry Ryan and Shayne Bannan and has 7 partial victories in just 4 years. Aussie Simon Clarke became King of the Mountain in 2012 and showed that he has what it takes to win. Michael Matthews is the second rider who won two stages. Caleb Ewan did a first great week last year for Orica, while Esteban Chaves finished 5th in the general classification, becoming a great revelation at the Vuelta 2015.

One of the longest-standing sponsors in the World Tour peloton is now up for a new edition of the Vuelta a Espana, the 14th one to be more exact. The Belgians debuted in 1998 under the name Lotto-Mobistar and only changed their name in 2005. Their history goes back to 1985 though, with current Marc Sergeant as a team member.

The Lotto-sponsored team had experts all the time, but their first victory arrived in 2008, when Van Avermaet won against Rebellin and Flecha. Their best edition is 2010, when Philippe Gilbert sealed his talent and was named World Champion. Adam Hansen is another prominent name in their team, the man who impressed everyone in the final stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2014.

A classic international name in the cycling world, they will compete in the Tour of Spain for the ninteenth time. Their debut took place in 1993 (!) and have never missed an edition this century. The flashy fuchsia and blue outfits will again be worn by the Italian cyclists of Lampre Merida.

The team has 18 partial victories, starting in 1993 with a win by Sergei Outshakov from Ukraine. Recent notable past performances include the unforgettable stage in Madrid when Ruben Plaza did an impressive work in 2015. Tiralongo has the best ever position of this team in the general classification (2009).

Their leader is Michel Thetaz and this year they will come to Spain for the 3rd time. La Vuelta 2020 will be the last three-week race for them, after they announced in May that IAM Cycling will definitely conclude its sponsorship. They have no victory in the Vuelta, but Reynes Vicente was really close in 2014. He has the best classification among his team mates in 2015. Pro tip for bettors: Aregger and Reynes are the only riders in this team to have ever completed each stage of La Vuelta.

This French team got into the pro peloton in 1997, their debut in La Vuelta happened in 2005. The riders only missed the 2011 event since then. Past performances include the most sought after triumphs by climbers three years ago in the 2013 La Vuelta: Kenny Elissonde (at Angliru) and Geniez Alexandre (at Peyragudes). Pinot Thibaut has the best classification in the Grand Spanish Tour, with the 7th place.

One of the regular teams present at Vuelta is coached by Patrick Lefevere. Past performances include 11 stage victories, and about 45% of them were obtained by world champion Bettini Paolo. Notable cylists in their team are Tony Martin (2014), Stybar Zdenek (2013), and Cataldo Dario (2012). Only two riders have made it to the top 10 in the general classification, and that happened almost 10 years ago.

Another team that was invited to participate in Spain's Grand Tour this year. The French team is coached by Jean Rene Bernardeau and is formely known as Bonjour, Brioches La Boulangere, Europcar, and now Direct Energie. The team has always been comprised of dedicated cylists such as world champion Laurent Brochard, Sylvian Chavanel, or Pierrick Fedrigo. In 2020, Direct Energie will compete in La Vuelta for the 11th time. Their debut took place in 2005, and their best general classification happened last year - Romain Sicard is responsible for that.

One of the oldest teams in the standings, Cofidis is a regular partipant in the Vuelta, having missed the Tour of Spain only in 2000. The French always come with powerful line-ups and fight for good positions in the general classification. They have a total of 14 partial victories, and 5 King of the Mountain triumphs, including 4 with spectacular cylist Moncoutié. Cofidis has an incredible history behind, with some of the most amazing finales of this sport, and Moncoutié was part of most of them. The victory tally was increased in 2014 by Dani Navarro.

Their team leader is Vaughters Jonathan and they only got accepted in the World Tour a few years ago. The team was sponsored by Garmin at the beginning, but Cannondale took over in 2015 when the Italian and US squads fusioned. Cannondale Team boasts a heterogeneous line-up, and their riders come from all over the world. This year's formula debuted in Vuelta 2009, obtaining exceptional results. However, Andrenw and Martin Talansky have the all-time best position of a Cannondale team member in the Tour of Spain, both with 7th place.

A seasoned team in La Vuelta's history, Caja Rural-Segures RGA competed in Spain for the first time in 2012. This year, they received one of the four invites and they want to achieve the same goal from last year - if not better. Antonio Piedra managed a spectacular debut campain in Tour of Spain at Lagos de Covadonga. Notable past performances include King of the Mountain victories in 2014 and 2015. David Arroyo finished in twelfth place last year at Vuelta.

Founded in 2010, this yeam grew slowly as well, but got the support of team Endura and its current name was found in 2014. Raplh Denk is the star of Germany's team and they have already competed in 3 Grand Tour, debuting in the 2012 Giro d'Italia. Their first Tour de France took place in 2013. Bora-Argon only has one participation in La Vuelta, and Leopold Konig managed to be among the first 10 in the general classification at the time. They were now invited to compete at La Vuelta 2020.

Formerly known as Phonak, BMC grew slowly but steady with each passing season. The small U.S. team that competed only in national championships went international at did at amazing job when it sign up Philippe Gilbert, Greg Van Avermaet, Cadel Evans, or Samuel Sanchez. They competed in La Vuelta 2011 for the first time in the Tour of Spain and they only took a victory in 2012. Gilbert also managed a victory in 2013 in Tarragona. In 2015, BMC Racing Team won the Team Time Trial and the 14th stage in Alto Campoo. Their best performance? Sanchez Samuel placed 6th in La Vuelta 2014.

Astana is the team who won La Vuelta in 2017 and they will be back this year to conquer the general classification. Fabio Aru was their winner last year. The team had impressive performances at Giro d'Italia in 2014, where Fabio Aru won the first place. The magnificent developments of the Vuelta race in recent years allowed Astana Pro Team to have triumphant finishes, including in the Andorra stage.

The French from AG2R La Mondiale are a long-standing team of the pro peloton and they have conquered many summit finishes in their 3-week race participations. The team leader is Lavenu Vincent, who has an experience of more than twenty years in cycling. Domenico Pozzovivo and Nicolas Roche have obtained top 10 positions in the final classifications of La Vuelta in 2013 and 2010, respectively. Spaniard Luis Arrieta won the last second stage in the Tour of Spain in 2006.

BORA - hansgrohe goes all out for the Vuelta a España 2023: Vlasov, Kämna, Higuita and Uijtdebroeks part of strong lineup

The BORA - hansgrohe team has unveiled its '8' for the Vuelta a España 2023 in which it is taking a very balanced team that includes Colombian Sergio Higuita , Aleksandr Vlasov , Lennard Kämna and Cian Uijtdebroeks into the mountains.

The German team repeats Nico Denz , who won 2 stages in the last Giro d'Italia and will surely try to win more. For the overall, men like Lennard Kämna, Cian Uijtebroeks or Aleksandr Vlasov will surely have a lot to say. The competitive team is completed by Jonas Koch , Emmanuel Buchmann and Ben Zwiehoff .

The key will be the strategy to follow, taking into account the large number of rivals that will fight for the overall. Maybe they will opt for Uijtebroeks to fight for a top 10 and play with Kämna and Vlasov to try to win stages as well as a likely GC focus. We will find out from this coming Saturday, September 26, the day that will give the starting signal for the great Spanish stage race.

Team presentation 2024: Bora – hansgrohe continues to develop

11 December 2023 by Michael Behringer

Giro d'Italia 2023 teams

Cycling: Numerous season victories and top 10 placings in the overall ranking of all three major state tours speak for a successful season for Bora – Hansgrohe. Nevertheless, the German WorldTour team wants more. Primoz Roglic will be in the squad in 2024.

Bora – hansgrohe celebrates 23 wins this season

The development of the German team Bora – hansgrohe is almost unique in modern professional cycling. Started in 2010 as Team NetApp, after the name change they made the leap to one of the best WorldTour teams in 2017 at the latest with the signing of Peter Sagan. Successful in the classics and the stage chase, the Raubling racing team has finally developed into a strong GC team over the past two years. Jai Hindley won the Giro d'Italia in 2022. In 2023, Bora – Hansgrohe wanted to build on this success. This didn't quite work out, as no Grand Tour had a rider on the overall podium at the end of the three weeks. Lennard Kamna finished ninth overall at the Giro d'Italia and Jay Hindley, and Alexander Vlasov seventh overall at the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana. Nevertheless, the only German WorldTour team can look forward to a total of 23 victories this season. Thanks to Nico Denz, Jai Hindley, Jordi Meeus and Lennard Kamna Stage victories were achieved in all three major national tours. What is particularly pleasing, however, is the development of Cian Uijtdebroeks. The Belgian rode a fantastic Vuelta and finished just one place behind captain Vlasov. The only question is whether he will also drive for the Raubling racing team in 2024. Because Jumbo – Visma recently announced that he wants to join the Dutch. Bora – hansgrohe denies an agreement.

2024: Roglic strengthens the GC team

In order to have a say in the overall ranking of the Tour de France in the coming season, Bora – Hansgrohe has decided to do so without further ado Primois Roglic obligated. The reigning winner of the Giro d'Italia has already won the Vuelta a Espana three times and, now 3 years old, is still considered one of the strongest classification riders in the peloton. With Daniel Felipe Martinez Another strong mountain rider joins the team. The Spaniard Roger Adria and the German Emil Herzog should still have enormous development potential uphill. Sam Welsforf comes from DSM and is considered a classic sprinter. He replaces in the squad Sam Bennett, who turns his back on Bora – Hansgrohe after just one year. In addition, the Austrians leave Patrick Conrad and the German Nils Politt the team, as well as the Dutchman Ide Schelling and the Italian Matteo Fabbro. This means that the character of the team changes again without the goals having to be updated. Bora – hansgrohe remains a strong team on almost every terrain, but the focus is increasingly being placed on the overall standings. For the first time, they want to finish on the podium at the Tour of France. With this squad, this plan seems realistic.

Vuelta a España 2024 preview: Full schedule and how to watch men's cycling Grand Tour race live

Discover the key things you need to know about this year's edition of the men's cycling Grand Tour stage race around Spain and the Iberian Peninsula, which starts on 17 August in Lisbon, Portugal.

The UCI World Tour road cycling stage race season kicks back into full swing this weekend after a break for the Olympic Games with the third and final Grand Tour of the men's season: the 79th Vuelta ciclista a España , the Tour of Spain .

This year, it runs from Saturday 17 August through to Sunday 8 September, and will cover over 3,300km (over 2,050 miles) of racing across 21 stages in southern Europe's Iberian Peninsula. The race begins in Lisbon, Portugal , the second time the Spanish stage race has begun in its neighbour after it hosted La Vuelta's first ever international start in 1997, and ends as is traditional in the Spanish capital Madrid .

Of the 21 stages, two are individual time trials, eight are classed as high mountain stages, five as medium mountain stages, five as hilly or uneven stages, and just one as a flat stage.

Sepp Kuss of the USA (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) is the defending champion and returns to lead of his team, looking to become a repeat winner of the race. The three-time champion Primoz Roglic of Slovenia, who won for Visma from 2020 through 2022, is also in the race for Bora-Hansgrohe .

A total of 176 riders from 22 teams will take to the start line in Lisbon on Saturday aiming to make it to the finish line in Madrid. This is what you need to know about this year's La Vuelta.

Vuelta a España 2024 riders to watch

Aside from both Kuss and Roglic, who between them have won four of the last five Vuelta general classifications (GC), there are some strong contenders on other teams, including from home Spanish riders.

INEOS Grenadiers are handing the race leadership to home hope Carlos Rodríguez , while his compatriots Mikel Landa (Soudal - Quick-Step) and Enric Mas (Movistar Team) will also be expected to do well.

It remains to be seen whether Movistar opt for a dual-pronged strategy, with 2016 winner Nairo Quintana of Colombia back in their team. The same can be said of UAE Team Emirates, who have two bona-fide leaders in Adam Yates of Great Britain and João Almeida , who will want to do well on his three home stages in Portugal.

Other GC hopefuls include Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Tokyo 2020 Olympic road race champion Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), and Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek).

However, neither the Paris 2024 Olympic road race and time trial champion Remco Evenepoel nor Giro d'Italia and Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar are racing.

Key stages of the 2024 Vuelta a España

With just one flat road race stage included in this year's Vuelta parcours, the peloton has a lot of climbing ahead of it over the 21 stages.

Four districts of Portugal and 20 provinces of Spain in nine autonomous communities will play host to the race, which has a total of nine uphill finishes at altitude.

Many of these finishes are well-known in the recent history of the race: the Alto de Moncalvillo, which welcomes the end of Stage 19, made its debut in 2020 on a stage won by eventual champion Roglic; on the very next stage this year the race will end on the Picón Blanco, which made its first Vuelta appearance in 2021.

Other climbs, meanwhile, such as the Lagos de Covadonga, have formed part of many stages in the tour's past – although, for the first time this year, a stage will end on the majestic climb, which sees ramps of up to 16 per cent in gradient.

The nine stages with hilltop or mountaintop finishes are:

  • Stage 4, ending on the Pico Villuercas at 1550m altitude, with an ascent of 14.6km at an average gradient of 6.2 per cent and maximum climbs of 20 per cent;
  • Stage 6, ending in Yunquera on the Alto de las Abejas at 728m altitude, with an ascent of 8.9km at an average gradient of 3.9 per cent;
  • Stage 8, ending on the Sierra de Cazorla at 1056m altitude, with an ascent of 4.8km at an average gradient of 7.1 per cent and maximum climbs of 20 per cent;
  • Stage 12, ending at the Estación de Montaña de Manzaneda at 1488m altitude, with an ascent of 15.4km at an average gradient of 4.7 per cent;
  • Stage 13, ending on the Puerto de Ancares at 973m altitude, with an ascent of 7.5km at an average gradient of 9.3 per cent and maximum climbs of 15 per cent;
  • Stage 15, ending on the Cuitu Negru at 1847m altitude, with an ascent of 18.9km at an average gradient of 7.4 per cent and maximum climbs of 24 per cent;
  • Stage 16, ending at the Lagos de Covadonga at 1069m altitude, with an ascent of 12.5km at an average gradient of 6.9 per cent and maximum climbs of 16 per cent;
  • Stage 19, ending on the Alto de Moncalvillo at 1491m altitude, with an ascent of 8.6km at an average gradient of 8.9 per cent and maximum climbs of 16 per cent; and
  • Stage 20, ending on the Picón Blanco at 1498m altitude, with an ascent of 7.9km at an average gradient of 9.1 per cent and maximum climbs of 18 per cent.

With just a single truly flat stage, this race is not one for the pure sprinters. There is no team time trial on the race this year, and unlike many recent years where the final stage has been a procession into Madrid, the 2024 Vuelta a España ends with an individual time trial , allowing for late changes to the GC standings.

Vuelta a España stage 8 Live - Medium mountain day with sharp uphill finish

Vuelta a españa: primož roglič wins stage 4 to seize race lead.

Van Eetvelt second and Almeida third in fragmented summit finish

How it Unfolded

Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) showed his crash injuries from the Tour de France were well behind him as he rocketed to victory on stage 4 of the Vuelta a España on Tuesday.

Roglič prevailed atop the Pico Villuercas after 170.5 kilometres of racing, narrowly out-pacing Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) who celebrated too soon and lost the sprint. João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) was third.

On a searingly hot day, the peloton waited to chase down the day's breakaway until the final 5 kilometres. Roglič was up front and ready for any attacks, but waited until the very last to make his move.

"It was tough - the heat, and for me now coming a bit back," Roglič said, adding that he is still struggling with his back injury.

"I felt definitely the back already after some hours. But I have to see, hopefully it doesn't get worse."

Roglič said nobody asked him to try for the stage win, he just felt he had to after his team controlled the race all day.

"It was not actually the main objective of today. When you see the guys riding hard in this heat, I'm happy to finish it off."

Roglič now leads the Vuelta by eight seconds over Almeida, with Enric Mas (Movistar) third at 32 seconds, but insists he's going to stick to his plan to "just to go day by day".

Defending champion Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike) lost 28 seconds and trails in 13th overall as teammate Wout van Aert gave up the red leader's jersey.

It was a sweltering day for the first major mountain stage of the 2024 Vuelta a España, and it started with an aggressive battle to make the day's breakaway. A move came first from Joshua Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers), Lorenzo Germani (Groupama-FDJ), Mauro Schmid (Jayco-AlUla), Luca Vergallito (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Simone Petilli (Intermarché-Wanty), with Bruno Armirail (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Eduardo Sepulveda (Lotto Dstny), Harold Martin Lopez (Astana) and Antonio Jesus Soto (Kern Pharma) chasing close behind.

Dylan Teuns (Israel Premier Tech) and Xabier Berasategi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) bridged across but all of the attacking groups came together on the first climb, the category 2 Puerto de Cabezabellosa (100.1km, average 4.9%) with only a small lead on the peloton.

The race came back together before the day's breakaway began to take shape ahead of the summit. At the front were Bruno Armirail (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Sylvain Moniquet (Lotto Dstny), Mikel Bizkarra (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Pablo Castrillo (Kern Pharma) and Filippo Zana (Jayco-AlUla).

Moniquet led over the summit with Zana and Bizkarra behind, and the five riders were allowed to go free by the peloton but were given a maximum lead of 3:30 before Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe began to bring the gap down because Armirail was threatening to take the race lead, having started the day in eighth place overall, 31 seconds behind leader Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike).

Moniquet took the maximum points on the category 1 Alto de Piornal after 54km of racing to move into the virtual lead of the mountains classification

The breakaway's lead melted in the heat of the valley, dropping under two minutes halfway into the stage, but began to go out again as the five leaders reached the third climb, the category 3 Puerto de Miravete (8km at 4.5%).

Armirail attacked 700 metres before the summit and the injection of pace brought their lead back out to three minutes.

However, Armirail attacked again, bringing Castrillo along for the ride, and the pair left their three companions well behind with 38km to go.

That lead began to vanish in the closing kilometres, however. At the intermediate sprint with 15.4km to go, Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) pipped race leader Van Aert to earn the maximum points, closing the gap to the Belgian in the green jersey competition to six points.

With 10km to go, the two leaders had just over a minute with much more climbing still to come.

A reduced bunch blasted onto the concrete section of the ascent with 5km to go just seconds behind the two leaders.

Roglič set the pace in the final 4km but Felix Gall (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) made his move on the steepest stretches but could not resist the pace set by the Slovenian.

Inside 3km to go, Gall lost touch, leaving Roglič alone with Enric Mas and Lennert Van Eetvelt (Lotto Dstny) at the front.

As the gradient eased, João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates), Matthew Riccitello (Israel-Premier Tech), Gall and Mikel Landa made it back to the leaders.

Landa launched first but was overtaken by Van Eetvelt, but Roglič showed his quality and snatched the win.
