newspaper essay in english

Importance of Newspaper Essay: 500 Words

Introduction:.

Newspaper is an important media. Its role in the making of the nation or the state cannot be denied. Newspaper lays emphasis on democracy by way of representing public opinions quite objectively. Its approach is certainly impersonal. Objective criticisms of state affairs lead the public to choose the right ways and to uphold the right ideas.

Importance:

Social, political, economical, and other changes take place due to the awareness of the people of a state or a country. And newspaper enables people to be aware of all phenomena which are happening in the country and abroad. Besides, newspaper presents the past and the present days, thereby helping us draw a contrast between the past and the present world. By this way, newspaper helps people predict the future.

Thus, reading of a newspaper strengthens one’s consciousness of the world. If one negates the newspaper, there is little doubt that he or she must retard gradually. The utility of newspaper is not only informative but also constructive because it presents diverse, contradictory views to form a general and well-accepted opinion.

Newspaper is also a common medium of advertisement. Popular brands use to promote their product through newspaper advertisements.

Disadvantages:

But unfortunately, most of the newspapers have now become commercial. Advertisements have been quite oddly covering most of the pages of a newspaper. Political issues and news have been disproportionately highlighted. The news of scientific discovery and the narrations of the lives of the scientists have not been emphasized in the newspaper.

Consequently, reading of newspaper nowadays seems to be rather dull and boring. Even the reporting often misleads the public. What is most ignominious is that some of the leading newspapers are now politically biased. It causes bad effects to the mind of people. People, therefore, begin to lose faith in newspapers. A certain kind of chaos is now being created because of the subjective reporting and unjustifiable information.

Conclusion:

The most hideous consequence of this commercial attitude is that readers of newspapers are now divided. Certain newspapers uphold certain political views in order to draw the attention of certain people. None can begin to read a newspaper with the strictest sense of objectivity. But without the presence of proper media, no nation can progress well. Therefore, the editors of newspapers must be aware of the fact that they are not only doing business but also doing noble jobs in the making of the nation.

Long and Short Speech on Newspaper

Speech on newspaper – 1.

Good Morning Students – How you all are doing?

I hope everyone enjoyed their winter breaks as much as I did. After this break, I am sure no student will be in a mood to study and since it’s your very first class after the break, I would like to take it easy and reintroduce you to your books slowly and gradually.

So today instead of studies I would like to talk about the importance of newspaper. Newspaper because it’s a good source of knowledge for all of us, but sadly I don’t find many of my students reading newspaper. It’s not merely a paper scroll which is dropped into our homes every single morning. They are indeed of great importance since the time they got introduced to humanity. It’s during the time of British Raj and until now; newspapers are considered a great medium of spreading awareness and sharing news about day to day happenings. Newspapers significantly act as a revolutionary medium to make announcements.

These days, we come across various regional and local newspapers as well as national dailies that are read by people from across the country from every section of our society. Newspapers are printed and circulated in nearly all the major languages, such as Hindi, English, Tamil, Bengali, Kannada, etc in our country. As far as the content of the newspaper is concerned, it covers different genres other than daily events in order to cater to the interest of the diverse readership. In fact, much to the interest of the readers, many agencies have added weekly magazines with their newspapers.

Newspapers hold a sweeping presence in our lives as with the help of which we remain aware about the latest political, national as well international developments and burning issues. This allows us to gain knowledge on every possible aspect – whether it’s economic, entertainment, cultural, political or social issues from across the globe. Many companies as well as organizations resort to print media such as newspapers in order to make public announcements regarding job opening or any other important detail. Commercial advertisements and endorsements that get printed in the newspaper receive a wide mass reach wherein people get to know about the latest launch of the products in the market.

Newspaper therefore acts as an industry-consumer interface that enables them to forge a healthy bond. Besides, newspapers carry an editorial segment where readers get a platform to express their views regarding any issue. Through this therefore one gets a huge platform to voice his/her concerns, views, exchange ideas as well as build up communication.

Thus, newspaper is that essential entity which is required by people from all sections of the society. Then why my students should remain deprived of it? Try to build your habit of newspaper reading on a regular basis and experience a healthy change in yourself. Also, encourage this habit of newspaper reading in your peer group and engage in discussions and debates for your intellectual growth.

This is all I have to say. Thank You!

Speech on Newspaper – 2

Hello Everyone – Warm Greetings to all of you!

I, Sourabh Shukla, your host for today welcome you all to the 21 st celebration of Indian Express Newspaper. Friends, as you all know that our team has been able to achieve its annual sale target; it is quite a victory for all of us. So considering the importance of today’s day, I would like to deliver a short speech on newspaper elucidating about its importance in our day to day lives.

Newspaper has become an indispensable part of our lives. Of course digital evolution has impacted the sale of newspaper, but people who realize its importance still purchase and read it. And as per Wikipedia, India is the biggest market for newspaper across the globe and more than 100 million copies are being sold every day. And despite the fact that internet has got a strong hold on people’s lives, the digital version of newspaper, i.e. eNewspaper is still being read by the people on their mobile phones and tablets in order to stay updated.

Now, let us know what important role do newspapers play in our lives. If I talk about the importance of newspaper in education, it really helps in strengthening the education sector by giving students practical examples of what they study theoretically. For instance, if students are studying about the impact of demonetization – its pros and cons – then teachers can put forth some real life instance from the newspaper. Through the medium of newspapers, students can understand the actual impact of demonetization on people’s lives and society at large.

One more example could be that in higher secondary classes, if Political Science students learn about the important role that a country’s prime minister plays; the teacher can effectively teach them so by drawing examples from the life of our current prime minister and throwing light on his day to day activities. And knowledge about his day to day activities can be gained through newspaper. Thus, I strongly feel that newspapers play a significant role in the progress of practical education.

Other than this, students derive a lot more benefits from the reading of newspaper, such as they can enhance their vocabulary. Irrespective of the stream they are in, whether it’s Political Science, Economics, Hindi or any other subject, students can easily find terminologies and content according to their stream and interest. Like we have “economic page section” in the newspaper for Economics students and there is also an editorial page for literature or Political Science students.

Other than improving their vocabulary, the habit of newspaper reading also increases the general knowledge of people and spread awareness about the latest trends in different parts of our country and world for that matter. What’s more?

Even you can find a whole section devoted to jobs/career, career pages, etc which are published weekly and help students to remain aware about various exams, jobs and career-related opportunities.

So the daily exercise of newspaper reading never goes waste and it does prove fruitful in many ways. This is all can be said.

Speech on Newspaper – 3

Hon’ble Principal, Vice Principal, Teachers and My Dear Fellow Students – Warm Greetings to all of you!

Now that the assembly has come to an end, I – Sakshi Kalra – Student of Class IX (A) would like to take this opportunity in order to talk about the important role that newspapers play in our lives. Newspaper is a crucial part of modern civilization. It is usually considered as a record of the day to day happenings or what you may call current events. However, the role of a newspaper goes much beyond that and is not merely relegated to a record keeping exercise. Do you know when newspaper was introduced into the world?

Well, the first time newspaper appeared after Guttenberg came up with the invention of printing press. And the first Indian newspaper was India Gazette. It was in the year 1744 that it got published. Since then the distribution of newspaper has only increased. It has in fact become a mark of the modern day civilization.

Now, newspaper has become a medium or platform for giving voice to public opinion. Different news items get published in newspaper in order to cater to the needs of a diverse range of population. People from every section of society read it – whether it’s a businessman, working people, lawyer, doctor, engineer or politicians – thus it should serve everyone’s purpose. For instance, through newspapers lawyers come to know about what is happening in the judiciary whether any political or social injustice has been meted out to anyone.

Businessmen also read newspapers and collect information related to commerce and trade in the country and overseas. Teachers and students get closer through the medium of newspaper. It serves as a medium of learning and teaching.

Even politicians find newspaper quite useful for voicing their political opinion to the people. M.K. Gandhi revised Young India in order to express his opinion about the independence of India.

It is newspaper that boosted the morale of the people and brought them together in order to fight for Indian Independence. When any news of crime or corruption gets published in the newspaper, then police become pro-active. The government also keeps a track of things through newspaper and at the time of public grievances, the government earnestly puts in efforts to redress them.

Since the role of a newspaper is to show truth to its people without taking sides, it thus should be free from any partiality or bias. It should act as potent force for strengthening the pillar of democracy. But unfortunately, in the pursuit of truth and for depicting complete transparency, journalists often have to face the brunt. Do we not come across such news of journalist being insulted, tortured or terrorized and even often getting killed by the antisocial elements present in our society? Newspapers are more than not set on fire before they reach their readership.

Editors are given bribe to portray right thing into wrong or wrong into right. Politicians are also seen expressing their rage against a piece of news wherein honest journalists often face persecution. Hence, I strongly feel that the lives of journalists should be made secure and immoral people should be punished.

Speech on Newspaper – 4

Dear All – I welcome everyone to the speech ceremony of today.

I, Akshat Khanna, your host for today would like to address my speech around the growing importance of newspaper. But prior to that, let me ask you all the definition of newspaper. How would you define a newspaper?

Newspaper falls into the category of print media and is defined as a repository of national as well as global level of news. It is a printed material whose primary objective is to update its people with the latest events and happenings. Information comes to us through newspaper from every possible direction, i.e. east, west, north and south. Despite revolution in technology and a huge shift from print media to digital media, the modern world of today still finds itself incomplete without the presence of newspapers. Thus, newspaper is not merely a printed, folded paper, but it’s an important document that contains important information, news, latest happenings, advertisement, review, etc. Newspapers can be called the world’s ears and eyes.

Even till date in the world of smart phones and tablets, for some people their morning doesn’t begin without having a newspaper to read in their hands. It’s not possible to imagine a day without a newspaper because then how will people update themselves in the morning. Newspapers are therefore an important part of our daily lives.

Newspaper provides us with information on every possible subject, such as Science, Art, Sports Business, Crime, Fashion, etc. Every column in a newspaper is thus of extreme importance. It makes us aware not only of what is happening in our country, but in other countries as well. Then, there is also a column for health that aims to spread awareness about the development of health. As far as entertainment is concerned, there is a column for crossword puzzle, comic cartoons as well as astrological facts. Newspapers also come with columns for matrimony, job vacancies, etc.

The newspapers are replete with advertisement as it’s an excellent source of earning for the newspaper agencies. So newspaper reading is a good habit and should only be encouraged. And if you do not possess this habit then you should try and cultivate it for an obvious reason that it brings greater awareness about what’s happening around and globally.

On the other hand, newspaper provides employment to thousands of people and is a good source of income for many – not only for the agencies, but writers, editors, marketing team, etc. In fact, those who sell or distribute newspapers on the street or road find it a source of earning their livelihood. Newspapers are printed in all the main languages so that you don’t have to change your language preference to be able to read a newspaper. In some schools, there is a rule that every morning one student should read out a piece of news to its peers.

So no matter how busy we are in our lives, we should never cut down on our habit of reading newspaper and consume content from it as much as we can.

Reading a newspaper is the beginning of the morning for many; it is an excellent source of information regarding sports, geography, science, entertainment, and many others, but after digitalization, the use of newspapers is getting lower day by day. We can say that the importance of newspapers is being underestimated in this modern world but are you aware that newspapers are essential to our lives in many ways?

Those days the newspapers were censored by the government due to the foreign news and the prices. After a few days, when the English government removed the censorship, newspapers started selling in London and many other cities, and by 1830, the newspaper was printing more than thousands of copies at Low prices.

We all know that during 1700, India wasn't an independent country, and this is why during this time period, when the world was busy making new updates, every good thing which came into the country was slow to reach, and the British Government introduced it according to their own convenience (although they were giving lesser profits to Indians they bought many goods). The news was exchanged on numerous pages much before that.

The Bengal Gazette, however, is the first fully-formed newspaper. As the early newspapers were published in English, they served no purpose for the general population and were solely an outlet for the British.

After that, Bengali newspapers like Sudha Varshan, Kesari, Vande Mataram, etc., were edited to struggle against the British and were banned by the government, but till then, the Indian public learned how to use this service to communicate with each other and have profit.

Newspaper is loved by various people as it is part of their morning schedules but not only for that, and it is really beneficial in many ways. Here are some main points in the benefits of newspaper daily.

Even if newspapers have numerous advantages, there are a few drawbacks to anything helpful to us, and this is why even newspaper has an issue which is as follows:

Today's newspapers not only serve as a source of information in various fields, but they also give some credit to members of all social groups. Both local and international newspaper features stories on athletics, entertainment, academics, and controversies. There are additional publications of pieces on humor, literature, spirituality, and other topics. Each newspaper publishes all that without fear, whether it's a piece of significant information on the administration or a big commercial secret. Additionally, news from Bollywood and Hollywood is given extra attention, and so many papers have a specific page for it.

This may amaze you, but the newspaper plays an important role in the growth of the education system in various countries as it represents a lot of practical examples and information for students regarding what they learned in books.

Teachers can use newspaper articles to explain various theories of economics and politics to their students.

Students gain practical information from utilizing news articles as examples since they can learn more about the topic from the newspaper. Since the news is popular and has connections to many real-world applications of the academic areas. It is also beneficial for students who are preparing for various competitive exams.

Newspapers have a crucial role in educating us about the world. They raise our awareness of and familiarity with current events. People now instantly receive news on their smartphones and computers as the world becomes increasingly digital. As a result, they choose digital news above newspapers.

I think the newspaper is one of the essential products for the student as it gives them many benefits such as increasing vocabulary power and current affairs. Students who face issues with English Vocabulary will be benefited from reading English newspapers.

Students who are learning Economy or Political Science get all the latest updates and information regarding their subjects with the help of newspapers. In contrast, Hindi students can learn different new words and use those words with the help of newspapers. In short, they can get information regarding their subjects and interests with the help of a newspaper; even a Newspaper has separate portions for it, just like an economic page or fun pages for kids, games, quizzes, and other useful stuff for the students, it also has weekly blogs for the students of literature to help the literature students.

Starting to read the newspaper helps students not just with their academics but also with their basic knowledge, understanding of local culture, and awareness of current events.

In addition to this, weekly newspaper sections such as career pages, career points, jobs/careers, etc. help students learn and gain an understanding of various occupations, tests, and career-related concerns.

If we are talking about the importance of newspapers in India for small business owners and shopkeepers, it is part of daily life for many. It helps them in understanding the current economies, what are the latest market costs, new laws by the government, and other government information. It helps them understand market demands and what the supplies are, and further details regarding the markets. Also, during their free time, they use it as the best time pass.

In newspapers, there are different special blogs for homemakers in both Hindi and English Newspapers where they can learn about new ideas to decorate their houses and new recipes to cook. They can also buy the weekly magazines coming with the newspaper, but the most exciting part which excites these housewives is the content regarding how they can improve and beautify these recipes.

New working professionals need to be careful and well aware of whatever is going on in the world so that they don't leave behind in the world of competition and the newspaper helps a lot in this. So anyone, no matter what profession they work in, should get knowledge regarding whatever is going on in the world regarding their field, and this helps them in getting more chances to be paid well and earn more job opportunities.

No doubt a newspaper is needed for politicians as most of the newspaper is covered with the most important news and what the politician as a public representative wants to convey to the public and at the same time get information about public opinion, which is very important for any politician to proceed further with their plan. They also learn about a specific region's concern and what other politicians are doing locally around the nation.

Additionally, it aids in their own political brand development and placement inside the republic.

Newspapers are one of the main components of city life for elderly people. They have grown up reading newspapers. They gain a better understanding of how individuals, societies, and nations are faring in the present. What was it like for them as children?

Now they are in a position to apply their expertise and experiences to assist the younger population, their individual family, and societies deal with the issues of the day. For senior citizens, the newspaper serves as a kind of companion. When they feel lonely or bored at home, it aids them in passing the time.

News articles have varying effects on readers. Others use the news to learn lessons, many use it to gain general knowledge, some find it hilarious, and some are using it as a source of joy.

However, only teachers can perceive why something is happening; for example, only economists, professors, or experts can grasp if there is a financial crisis in the nation. They can direct kids using this knowledge. Additionally, they can demonstrate strategies for dealing with different economic situations.

Because of this, I believe that if teachers read the news, they can keep kids up to date, enhance their education, or train them how to face potential financial, social, and personal troubles.

One of the largest industries in the world is newspaper publishing. Publishers of newspapers make money from advertisements and by selling these newspapers. They work really hard to bring such news and write it and thus it is very necessary for them to sell their hard work and earn money from it.

The management, publishing, reporting, advertising, marketing, designing, and other aspects of the newspaper industry include a variety of people. Publishers of newspapers also provided jobs for various posts.

The people deserve to know what the administration is doing; hence the newspaper is crucial. What new regulations exist? What recent legislation was approved by a leader of a political party? Media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy as it brings to light where government policy is lacking.

People will be better able to comprehend their politician's political philosophy and position on many issues, such as what the administration is doing to boost GDP, by doing. Which political party is considering what type of move, etc. Individuals can comprehend past, present, and future government operations by reading about such events in the news. Because of this, we should consider the newspaper to be essential for the principles of democracy.

While internet marketing is widespread and is highly efficient and focused nowadays, traditional advertising, like newspaper advertising, is a way for businesses, companies, and political leaders to reach out to the general public in the context of advertising and marketing campaigns.

For many people, it provides a job and a source of money. The newspaper occasionally serves as documentation and proof of events. The supply of information and statistics that aid in boosting a nation's citizens' knowledge and understanding is the most crucial.

The news these days includes unique entertainment items in addition to the news. The newspaper Includes articles on the entertainment world, and people get to know a lot of information about upcoming movies, experiences & like dislikes of their favorite actors and actress, etc. It also includes news related to the sports world and articles on different sports personalities.

Newspapers are essential to our daily lives because they provide data and information from around the world. A newspaper is a crucial tool for information on scandal and injustice. Politics, social concerns, sports, the economy, movies, and the stock market are the main themes of broad interest in the newspaper.

Newspapers are a type of mass media that speak out about societal concerns like dowry and child labor and also about government policies and international news. Newspapers also provide information on upcoming movies and television series, as well as a database of cinemas with movie schedules. The extent of a newspaper's commitment to accuracy and honest journalism determines its integrity and reputation. In the end, it is the least expensive and most effective weapon, and the significance of newspapers can be seen.

We don't get bored as a result of it. If you don't think you'll need it, If You won't need any company if you have a newspaper in your hands.

The Dying Habit

Sadly, despite its countless benefits, reading the newspaper is becoming a dying habit. People nowadays rarely read newspapers because they can get real-time information on their mobile phones and computers. They also avoid picking up the newspaper because technological devices are more convenient for them.

Furthermore, in recent years, everything has become extremely convenient and quick. You can stay up to date on what's happening in different regions of the world as it occurs. People no longer read newspapers because they believe they are simply being reminded of what they already know. Furthermore, they do not have to wait until the next day to read the newspaper about current events because, thanks to the internet, they can obtain it right away.

It merely goes to show how passive and sedentary we've become. The only requirement is that everything be served on a platter. As a result, we must not allow this to become a dying habit, as newspapers are incredibly reliable sources of information. Without these, there will be very few people left to verify the facts and information we're given.

Even though social media and other electronic media are far more easily accessible, let us not forget the importance of reading the newspaper and inculcate this habit of reading in our children so that they continue with the legacy.

Wedding Toasts: How To Write A Father Of The Bride Speech

You’ve walked your daughter down the aisle, and have just watched her marry the love of her life – now it’s time to make your father of the bride speech. This is such a big day, full of love and happiness, and a brilliant father of the bride speech can make or break the evening (so no pressure!).

But, there is probably a lot you want to say – and you’re likely wondering ‘how can I condense years of pride and affection into a short but great father of the bride speech?’ Never fear, we’ve got loads of useful tips and tricks to make your toast the cherry on top of an already amazing day.

What should you include in a father of the bride speech?

With loads of memories and stories about your daughter (and her partner) that you could share, getting your ideas on paper is the hard part. But, there are a few core elements that are always included in all the best father of the bride speeches that can give you somewhere to start writing.

We’ve even put our suggestions in an order for you to follow – consider this a father of the bride template from us to you!

Start by thanking the guests

It’s pretty standard practice to thank your guests for attending during a father of the bride speech. Whether the wedding is for 20 or 200 people, everyone has made an effort to be there, so you should take some time to recognise that in your speech.

Of course, while you can thank the wider guestlist more generally, make sure to call out certain people by name. These include your daughter and her new spouse, your partner, your new in-laws, bridesmaids and groomsmen, and other close family members involved in the wedding – basically everyone that has been a key contributor to making the day a success.

We recommend starting your speech with any thanks, but keep it fairly short. You don’t want to bore your audience before you’ve properly begun your father of the bride speech.

Praise your daughter and the person she has become

As the father of the bride, your speech is a time for sharing stories and memories of your daughter. From when she was born and her childhood, to stories of her as she grew, this is the time to share silly memories and tell everyone how proud you are of her.

Stuck for ideas? We suggest picking out some of your favourite qualities of your daughter to share with the wedding crowd. This is your time to be honest and make your father of the bride speech unique. Everyone can say a bride is beautiful, or funny – you don’t want people to think that you’ve copied some random father of the bride speech off of the internet.

Instead, you have insight into the woman she is, (who she really is), so share something quirky and original to tailor your father of the bride speech specifically for her.

Maybe you’re proud of how much she cares about family, her determination and ambition, or even that she can recite a specific scene of her favourite film! Whatever you choose, make sure to keep it light, positive, and personal to celebrate her on one of the biggest days of her life. Aim to have people laughing and crying in equal measure – and don’t be afraid to shed a tear yourself.

Share memories of the couple

Of course, the day isn’t just about your daughter – it’s also about her partner. So, make sure you spend some time talking about the new member of your family. This could be with funny stories about how they met, the early days of their relationship and how you felt on meeting them for the first time, or stories from the present.

Like with your daughter, make sure they know you’re proud of the person she has chosen to spend her life with. Remember, you’re not losing your daughter to someone, you’re gaining more family!

We suggest spending most of your time talking about your daughter and her partner on their wedding day – that way you’ll have the rest of the wedding party eating out your hands with an emotional, funny, and brilliant father of the bride speech.

Give some words of wisdom or advice

Whether it’s a quip about dealing with some habits of your daughter, or how to make her favourite treat, the best father of the bride speeches always have some advice for the couple.

Some lighthearted teasing and funny advice is bound to get some laughs, and you can then switch the tone with some more serious words of wisdom for the happy couple. Offering some tips about marriage, or even just reminding the couple that they can always come to you for help and advice, is a great way to start rounding off your father of the bride speech.

End with a toast to the happy couple

Now you’ve done the hard part – but don’t forget you want to end strong. That’s why you should finish off your father of the bride speech with a heartfelt toast to the newlyweds. This is the time to round up everything you’ve said, (maybe slip in one last joke), and raise a glass to your wonderful daughter and her new partner.

Then it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of the celebration safe in the knowledge that you delivered a brilliant father of the bride speech.

Things to remember

Using our father of the bride speech template above is a surefire way to make sure your speech stands out and makes the best impression on the other wedding guests. But, we do have a little more advice for you…

  • Introduce yourself : make sure everyone knows who you are before you get into your father of the bride speech. Remember to introduce yourself, and even slip in a small joke to help you (and the crowd) relax.
  • Do NOT embarrass your daughter : this is her wedding day, so maybe keep some of the more embarrassing stories for another occasion. We’re not saying you shouldn’t include some funny stories, but make sure they’re ones she will laugh along with as well.
  • Don’t force funny : peppering your father of the bride speech with some jokes is one thing – but don’t try to shoehorn jokes in for the sake of it. Stories and memories will tend to get some laughs anyway, which will make your speech feel much more natural.
  • Speak from the heart : part of writing the best father of the bride speeches means speaking from the heart. Be honest and genuine, and there won’t be a dry eye in the house when you’re done.
  • Tell your daughter you love her : this is an obvious one, but sometimes you can get swept up in the details and forget the simple things. Whatever you say in your speech, don’t forget to tell your daughter you love her.
  • Keep it short : weddings are a celebration! So, you don’t want to drone on and on until people are bored stiff. Keep your father of the bride speech to about 10 minutes max – although six to eight minutes is even better.
  • Practice : keeping to time, and making sure your speech feels smooth is hard. Spend some time practising before the big day (and don’t be afraid to keep some cue cards with you if you need them).

The historic event took place on 18 September 2014 and saw more than two million people (55.3%) vote No and 1.6 million (44.7%) vote Yes. Then first minister Alex Salmond stood down following the defeat.

Former first minister Alex Salmond has told Sky News he started to write his concession speech after the first result was declared in the Scottish independence referendum 10 years ago.

The historic event - which would have seen Scotland break free from the rest of the UK - took place on 18 September 2014 and saw more than two million people (55.3%) vote No and 1.6 million (44.7%) vote Yes.

Clackmannanshire was the first to return a result and recorded 19,036 (53.8%) votes for No and 16,350 (46.2%) for Yes.

Known as the "Wee County", the local authority area often reflects the opinion of Scotland as a whole.

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Salmond said: "So, when I saw that result, I started to write my concession speech."

Although Dundee, Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire showed "thunderous support" for Yes, it was not enough.

Following the defeat, Mr Salmond stood down as first minister and SNP leader and was replaced by Nicola Sturgeon.

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon hold copies of the White Paper after it was launched at the Science Centre in Glasgow. The Scottish Government has published its white paper on independence, outlining how it believes a Yes vote in next year's referendum could pave the way for a new era for the nation.

Reflecting 10 years on, Mr Salmond said the campaign for independence started from behind.

He said: "Nobody gave us a chance at the start.

"I always reckoned if we got to the positive side of the argument, if we claimed the positive side for Yes, which in itself is an affirmation, then once we got into the campaign, I thought we'd pick up ground, and so we did."

Mr Salmond believes the Yes side "nudged ahead" with around 10 days to go, but the huge public support effectively mobilised the No voters to take action.

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond as he meets with Scots and other European citizens to celebrate European citizenship and "Scotland's continued EU membership with a Yes vote" at Parliament Square in Edinburgh.

Speaking about the "infectious" atmosphere at the time, he said thousands of people turned up to campaign, joking it was "impossible to do the shopping".

He added: "So, it was a very exciting period, and I thought we'd just about make it. I thought we'd just done enough.

"So, it was a big disappointment, of course it was."

First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond chats to school children at Strichen Primary School in Strichen, as polls have opened on a historic day for Scotland as voters determine whether the country should remain part of the United Kingdom.

Mr Salmond is now the leader of the Alba Party.

Despite the UK Supreme Court ruling in 2022 that the Scottish government cannot legislate for indyref2 without Westminster approval , he does not believe independence is as far away as it's ever been as there has been a "seismic change" since the campaign was launched in 2012.

Mr Salmond is calling for campaigners to mobilise now to return a majority pro-independence Scottish parliament in the 2026 election. From there, a strategy should be put in place to "face down Westminster with the democratic will of the Scottish people".

He said: "All we have to do is reconfigure the political furniture so as that mass of Yes support finds a political expression."

The politician said it would be better for the movement if a number of pro-independence parties are elected but not actually in government.

He explained: "You don't want people not to vote for independence because, you know, they're fed up with half-built ferries or daft bottle schemes or self-identification , or whatever it might be.

"You want people to vote for independence because they want self-determination and respect for the nation."

Mr Salmond noted how the Better Together No campaign, dubbed "Project Fear", said "all sorts of dreadful things" would happen to Scotland if the Yes campaign won.

He said: "You know, we wouldn't get into Europe. Nobody would talk to us. That Scotland would somehow drift off and end up at the North Pole or whatever. All these dreadful things were going to happen."

However, Mr Salmond said the No campaign never claimed the SNP was not fit to run the Scottish parliament due to its past record.

Mr Salmond said that situation has since changed.

He said: "Because of the mistakes in governance, let's put it that way, over the last five years, the SNP have got this albatross round their necks of their record in government.

"And if that becomes a hindrance to the independence campaign, then it becomes a problem."

And then there's the Police Scotland investigation into the SNP's funding and finances.

Dubbed Operation Branchform, the long-running probe is linked to the spending of around £600,000 raised by supporters to be earmarked for Scottish independence campaigning. It is understood there have been complaints the ringfenced cash has been used improperly by being spent elsewhere.

Peter Murrell, Ms Sturgeon's husband and former SNP chief executive, was charged by police earlier this year in connection with the embezzlement of party funds.

The investigation has also seen Ms Sturgeon arrested and released without charge, alongside ex-party treasurer MSP Colin Beattie. Ms Sturgeon continues to deny any wrongdoing.

Mr Salmond said the police probe "certainly overhangs" and "casts a shadow" over the party but is not the "main source of problems".

Citing the SNP's recent record in government, he said the controversial Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill "alienated a great number of people in the women's movement".

Mr Salmond said: "And for the life of me, I don't understand what all that was about. I mean, even if you thought that was a hugely important issue, you wouldn't divide a country just when you're trying to take it to independence.

"You'd say, 'oh well, you know, we'll discuss that after independence'."

He added: "If the SNP were the only thing on offer, that would be a problem. Luckily, they're not the only party on offer and I think we can overcome that problem."

Mr Salmond said there has been a lot of talk over the years, but not a lot of action.

He said: "I haven't seen a sustained campaign for Scottish independence from the SNP for 10 years."

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon they launch a paper today at Alexander Denis coach manufacturers outlining the nations key economic strength as an independent country.

Mr Salmond said a clear strategy is required so people know the direction the movement is going - in the past it was "let's get a parliament, let's get into government in the parliament, then hold a referendum and become independent".

Mr Salmond said he was a "betting man" and believes "Scotland will be independent in the next 10 years".

He said the Alba Party would happily cooperate with the SNP to get the job done.

Mr Salmond said: "That's what matters for Scotland. What we do with the independence, what we do with that self-determination, well, I think, we would govern Scotland well and wisely."

And as for any future blunders, he said it will be the nation's "own mistakes" that they can do something about.

Mr Salmond added: "I don't say that Scotland would be a land of milk and honey, but we would be a land of oil, gas and renewables and that would stand us in good stead."

The SNP was contacted for comment.
