What Does an Art Therapist Do?

Art therapists conduct art therapy sessions with individuals and groups to improve clients’ physical, emotional or cognitive well-being. Art therapists consider their clients’ goals and objectives to design and carry out therapy sessions or programs based on observations and interviews with family members, among other factors.

To assess their clients’ needs, art therapists use artistic processes such as sculpting, drawing and painting to draw conclusions and make recommendations. After developing an individualized treatment plan, an art therapist guides their client through artistic self-expression to promote recovery from a specific challenge.

Art therapists work with clients in various settings, including schools, prisons, shelters, hospitals and nursing homes.

Art Therapist Salary

According to Payscale , the average art therapist earns around $50,000 per year. Art therapists earn about 23.6% less than the average annual salary for all occupations nationwide, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics .

In 2021, the American Art Therapy Association (AATA) released a member demographics report showing a large salary range for art therapists. The most common salary range reported (33.1% of respondents) was $50,000 to $79,999 per year.

What’s the Difference Between an Art Therapist and a Counselor?

The terms “therapy” and “counseling” are often used interchangeably. This is an understandable misconception since both practices involve trained mental health professionals who help clients navigate mental health conditions and other issues. However, art therapy departs from counseling in a significant way.

Counselors typically use talk-based sessions to help their clients cope with challenges and develop positive skills and behaviors. Art therapists provide a more integrative approach, helping their clients express themselves visually or symbolically through the creative process that art allows.

Additionally, counselors often have a more narrow focus and address singular issues such as substance abuse, behavioral disorders or mental health. Art therapists typically assist in improving their clients’ physical, cognitive and emotional well-being holistically.

How To Become an Art Therapist

Earn a bachelor’s degree.

Your bachelor’s degree should include significant coursework in both studio art—which includes drawing, painting, sculpting and other creative mediums—and psychology.

Earning a bachelor’s degree in art therapy is the most direct way to become eligible for an art therapy master’s program, but only some institutions offer a bachelor’s degree in art therapy. Alternatively, you might double major in psychology and art, or you could major in one subject and minor in the other.

Earn a Master’s Degree

Ultimately, a master’s degree in art therapy or a mental health discipline is required before you can become an art therapist. These programs often take two years to complete and require an internship and advanced art therapy coursework.

Complete Experience Hours

After graduating with a master’s degree in art therapy, you can pursue the Registered Art Therapist (ATR) credential or the Board-Certified Registered Art Therapist (ATR-BC) credential, after first earning the Provisional Registered Art Therapist designation (ATR-P).

These credentials are administered by the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB). ATR and ATR-BC candidates must complete between 1,000 and 1,500 hours of direct client contact using art therapy, but ATR-Ps can apply for their credential before completing these hours. We’ll go into more details on professional credentials in the next section.

Apply for Credentialing and Licensure

The ATCB oversees testing and credentialing for art therapists. The ATR and ATR-BC credentials are the most common for art therapists, with the ATR-BC being the highest-level credentialing option.

Most states do not offer professional art therapy licenses, but the following do, according to AATA :

• Connecticut
• Mississippi
• Washington, D.C.

In addition, Texas, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Utah regulate art therapy under other professional licenses. Licensure details differ by state, so if you live in a state that requires art therapists to become licensed, make sure to check its specific requirements.

Professional Credentials for Art Therapists

The ATR is the primary credential for art therapists and comes with a stringent set of education and experience requirements. An art therapist must become an ATR before they can become an ATR-BC. As of July 2024, ATR candidates must hold ATR-P status before applying.

ATR candidates must have completed at least 18 semester credits in studio-based art courses at the undergraduate or graduate level. A qualifying visual arts portfolio may count for up to six studio art credits.

Prospective ATRs must have a master’s degree or higher and have completed significant coursework in mental health and art therapy content. Mental health coursework must include the following areas:

• Psychopathology/abnormal psychology
• Psychological assessment
• Human growth and development
• Counseling/psychological theories

And graduate-level art therapy coursework should cover the following:

• History or foundations of art therapy
• Theory of art therapy
• Techniques of practice in art therapy
• Application of art therapy with people in different treatment settings
• Art therapy assessment
• Ethical and legal issues of art therapy
• Social and cultural diversity as it pertains to art therapy
• Standards of good art therapy practice
• Group art therapy
• Systems in art therapy

Candidates whose graduate degrees do not meet all requirements may complete the mandated coursework outside of a degree program.

Internship or Practicum

Credential candidates must complete a practicum or internship within a graduate-level academic course. The ATCB requires at least 700 hours of a supervised art therapy internship or practicum, including at least 350 hours of providing art therapy services directly to individuals or groups.

If an ATR-BC or Art Therapy Credentialed Supervisor (ATCS) teaches a candidate’s internship/practicum course, this reduces the number of client contact hours required for licensure.

ATR-P Certification

The ATR-P is a transitional step toward the ATR credential. This designation allows recent master’s graduates to demonstrate to potential employers that they are on the path to earning the ATR while they complete required experience hours.

To qualify for the ATR-P, candidates must complete a qualifying master’s program, preferably one with accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or approval from AATA. Other programs require an education review as part of the application process. They must also have an ACTB-credentialed supervisor.

Art therapists can renew the ATR-P for up to five years while they accrue supervised client contact hours to qualify for the ATR.

Client Contact Hours

After earning their graduate degrees and obtaining ATR-P status, candidates seeking ATR credentialing must complete client contact hours. Candidates who completed their internship or practicum under a current ATR-BC or ATCS need at least 1,000 hours of post-education work with clients using art therapy. At least 100 of these hours must be supervised, but supervision hours can now be done virtually.

For candidates who did not complete their internship or practicum in a course taught by an ATR-BC or ATCS, the ATCB requires 1,500 hours of direct client contact using art therapy. At least 150 of these hours must be supervised.

Becoming an ATR-BC

This is the highest credential an art therapist can earn. Current ATRs do not need to complete additional education or experience prerequisites to become ATR-BCs, but they need to pass the Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCBE). The ATCBE is a national exam that tests candidates’ comprehensive knowledge of the clinical skills and theories applied in art therapy.

Top Skills for Art Therapists

In addition to expertise in studio art and mental health, an art therapist should have a handful of core soft skills.

Communication

Verbal and nonverbal communication are essential aspects of the therapist-client relationship. It’s imperative for art therapists to be able to connect meaningfully with their clients. This connection can help with building trusting relationships and creating a safe space for artistic expression, especially when clients struggle to share their emotions verbally.

Familiarity With Art

Art is a broad field that includes various disciplines like drawing and painting, sculpture, graphic design and photography. Art therapists should be confident in a variety of artistic practices to meet their clients’ varying needs. Fortunately, the educational pathway to becoming an art therapist often includes courses covering artistic ability and art history.

Active Listening

Active listening is different from passive listening, which allows clients to share their thoughts without disruption. Active listening involves the ability to ask pertinent questions for clarification or more details and restate what a client has said to ensure the therapist understands the client correctly.

Active listening is particularly crucial for clients who struggle to communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively when dealing with various challenges and emotional obstacles. Active listening allows the therapist to understand the depth of their client’s emotions, build rapport and tailor a treatment plan.

Having patience with clients communicates an art therapist’s care for their clients’ needs, especially as clients may struggle with expressing their emotions. Further, each client enters art therapy on a unique timeline and may not make progress as quickly or smoothly as expected. Unmet expectations and impatience can often result in frustration or even annoyance on the therapist’s part, which can be detrimental to client growth.

So You Want to Be an Art Therapist, Part Six: Should I Get a Doctorate?

Is it idealistic, a form of madness or a ponzi scheme—or all of the above.

Almost every week I am asked "should I get a doctorate?" by a master's level student or new professional. And "what kind of doctorate should I get?" Or "how about an art therapy doctorate?" Finally, "I want to teach [because I can't find an art therapist job I can stand for the next 20 years], will a doctorate help?" These questions are the subject of this final installment of "So You Want to be an Art Therapist." As King Lear said, "oh, that way madness lies"...well, maybe not in every single situation, but it's complicated.

I have a doctorate--- a PhD in research psychology. My choice of degree was based on several factors. First, I really did want to learn as much as possible about research, having watched art therapists fumble at it [myself included] for many years. I also did not need another license to practice so PhD or PsyD in clinical psychology did not make sense for me because getting paid just a little more per hour would not have been cost-effective. Since I have already studied art therapy extensively, it also made no sense for me to enroll in a program that bestows an art therapy or expressive therapy doctorate. My PhD program allowed and encouraged me to integrate art therapy research within my coursework and dissertation, plus I learned a lot more by stepping outside my comfort zone. Finally, I did not have to take out any loans in order to study; I was fortunate to have an employer pay my tuition. But as for an increase in salary, I don't really think it has made any difference except that maybe I sell a few more books these days.

So, should you get a doctorate? If you are interested in art therapy, is it a wise investment to get a doctorate in art therapy or some other field? And will you be able to become a professor and teach art therapy in higher education ? But before I give you my opinion, you don't want to miss this gem of a film on getting a doctorate in clinical psychology:

Okay, I hope you took a few minutes to watch this film because so much of it is pretty accurate. It's not about art therapy per se, but in my experience, it mirrors a lot of why many people decide to go for a doctorate and the realities involved in investing both time and money into any graduate study. As the professor tells her advisee, your friends and your four cats will not call you doctor if that is what you are hoping for as an outcome. Nor will you necessarily make more money than you are making at a master's level and possibly you will not feel better about yourself, post-graduation.

What most of my colleagues are expecting as their end games via doctoral study generally falls into two areas. First, most want to find a position teaching in higher education after graduation---oh, this is where the madness lies. In recent years, the odds of landing a tenure track full-time teaching gig in higher education have decreased tremendously. So much so that some educators are calling doctoral degrees a "Ponzi scheme" on the verge of collapse because there are so many PhDs competing for fewer and fewer academic jobs. Meanwhile universities keep taking in students at increasing numbers; after all, students equal more tuition and/or extra cheap labor teaching introductory courses or assisting graduate programs. To some extent whether you land that academic job will depend on your degree title [see more about that below], but "buyer beware" if you are expecting a doctorate to lead you down a path to a guaranteed assistant professorship. It may only increase your chances of teaching more courses as an adjunct professor or lecturer at low pay and without health or other benefits; remember, those tenured professors in your doctoral program are not retiring any time soon and many of them are working in academia well past 70 years and older these days.

The second mantra my colleagues oft repeat when considering doctoral study is this: "I want to conduct art therapy research because the field needs evidence-based studies." Art therapy does need much more research and evidence-based or outcome studies in particular. Is it helpful to have a doctorate to undertake this? Yes and no. Having a PhD does not guarantee that you will be able to obtain research grant money nor is it completely necessary to conduct meaningful research. I have many masters level art therapy colleagues who have carried out some really fine research on pain management , asthma, sexual abuse , psychological trauma and psychosocial treatment of cancer; they simply worked under a principle investigator [PI; generally an MD or research scientist] and helped design and conduct the studies. But of course, going to a really good doctoral program at a research-oriented university can be a game-changer for those who want in-depth learning experiences in the area of research design.

So should you still go for a doctorate? Certainly, especially if you enjoy learning, are okay with long hours away from family and friends, and you don't go into too much debt. And if you are willing to accept a challenging job market and relocation [I hear that Kansas is always looking for professors]. On the more optimistic side, your doctoral study will give you more time to learn more about something you are really passionate about and provide a framework and mentorship for advanced study. So here is my short list of recommendations:

Get a PhD, PsyD, or EdD . In other words, get a standard, recognizable degree unless you are going to get something like a DSW [doctorate in social work] or DOT [doctorate of occupational therapy], two well-recognized professional fields.

Go to a university rather than a college or institute program . If you are really interested in learning how to design and conduct research, go to a university for your doctoral degree. A college or institute will not have the necessary connections or research faculty to really provide in-depth experiences. A university associated with a teaching hospital or medical school is the best choice if you can find one that suits your specialty area. And while many doctoral students are entering fast-track programs with limited residency, don't be afraid of a brick and mortar program that requires more residency; the isolation of independent study works for some, but others find that self- motivation to complete papers and projects is extremely difficult.

To my masters level art therapy colleagues, you already received a degree in art therapy, so take a look at a different degree title for your doctorate . I know many will disagree, but I don't think it is in your best interest to get yet another, higher level degree in art therapy unless you know that you will find employment, have the financial means, or your employer is paying for your program. It's just too risky, given that it is not clear that art therapy is recognized profession [see previous installments on credentials and education].

If you need a sure bet , consider a PhD or EdD in counselor education . If you have read the first several installments in this series, you might remember that art therapy has hitched its academic wagon to the field of counseling. Many graduate programs will be looking for individuals with doctorates in counselor education because the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs [CACREP] has required that its accredited programs employ those with counselor education doctorates in the near future. Even programs that are not CACREP accredited will be looking for faculty with this degree title because of counseling licensure laws in some states. My guess is that either there will be many art therapy programs looking to hire art therapists with counselor education doctorates or counseling graduate programs will be interested in your dual expertise in counseling and art therapy.

Finally, interview recent graduates from the programs of study that interest you before you make a decision. It's hard to say how it applies to art therapists who are considering a doctorate in a mental health field, but it will give you some insight into the current challenges.

About the Event

Join Magdalena V. Karlick, M.A., Phd-c, ATR-BC, LPCC, on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, 7 – 9 pm ET for a virtual Continuing Education session.

Community care is a fundamental human need . It is with our  chosen families  and communities that we find common language, experience, acceptance, and celebration. The visceral sense of belonging reduces anxiety and increases the sense of  being seen ,  being safe , and  having purpose . It offers connection, guidance, mentorship, relief, and mirroring. 

When we lose our inherited communities – whether based on how we dress, who we love, or the life choices we make – it is a deep rupture. For our clients, this loss is complicated. They may lose their family network they grew up with or the cultural communities they relied on. Or they may feel hurt and betrayed, for example, when a dear family member refuses to use their pronouns or doesn’t respect their existential belief systems.

The loss may also be compounded by outright hate or violence. Or it may be followed by a continuous barrage of confusing mixed messages (“I love you” and “Your being is wrong”); or unrealistic expectations, like conversion. These responses are complex and traumatic.

In this continuing education session, we will explore the experience of belonging and some of the factors that limit this internal and interpersonal experience. We will discuss practices of inclusivity as it relates to representation, language use, and nervous system regulation. We will use somatic awareness techniques and art supplies to explore our felt sense of belonging. In addition, we will explore the relationship between cultural humility and the experience of belonging as it pertains to the facilitation of art therapy in a variety of settings.

This session describes and discusses cultural humility as a foundation for community success in a variety of settings where Art Therapists work.

Magdalena V. Karlick, M.A., Phd-c, ATR-BC, LPCC, (she/her) is an art therapist, educator, and doctoral candidate in the Expressive Arts program at the European Graduate School, focusing on exploring the “aesthetic responsibility of the facilitator to the group” through various methods of arts-based research.

Her new podcast “ Belonging & Boundaries: An Arts-Based Approach ” launched February 2024. It features interviews with educators in the art therapy, creative arts therapy, and expressive art therapy fields.

Magdalena is the owner of  Our Imaginal World , an organization that provides individual and group therapy, arts-based supervision, post graduate education, community health consultation for agencies, as well as commissioned art installations. Magdalena has been an educator in the art therapy, expressive arts, and counseling fields since 2012, focusing on cultural humility, somatic awareness, ethics, group dynamics, and creative arts techniques. Currently, she teaches for the Kint Institute in NYC, a post-graduate creative arts therapy and trauma training in-person program. For a number of years, she was the Art Director for Tomorrow’s Women, working with Palestinian and Israeli youth during an international summer camp intensive in New Mexico, and co-created a trauma therapy support network for staff and alumnae of this program during the most recent outbreak of violence. She also offers arts-based supervision to art therapy interns, dependently licensed art therapists and counselors who are pursuing independent licensure in New Mexico, as well as art therapists in training around the country who are completing their hours towards the ATR-BC. Magdalena has received training in  Somatic Experiencing, Sandplay, and Psychodrama , and weaves these understandings of group, symbol and body into her classrooms, work with clients, and supervisees. In her workshops, Magdalena tailors content and experience to meet the needs of the community or organization that has contracted her services, including stress reduction, relationship building, conversation strategies, cultural humility practices, equity and inclusion, and rebuilding group norms. Since 2006, she has lived in O’Gah P’Ogeh Owingeh, the unceded territory of Tewa-speaking people, also known as Santa Fe, New Mexico. Magdalena is passionate about social justice, responsibility in leadership, and using the creative process to communicate stories and integrate understanding. She has been involved in multiple cross-cultural global art exchanges and plans to continue to collaborate globally. She is a cis-woman and queer mama with two children.
