About Kannada University

Kannada University was established through the Kannada University Act 1991 established at Hampi, in 1991.The demand for such a University was there in Karnataka since the mid 1980s but it took a while before it got established. Towards this effect, the Government of Karnataka established a commission under the chairmanship of Sadashiva Wodeyar. This Committee after consulting various intellectuals, education experts, political thinkers, social activists, literary personalities and representatives of people came out with a report and recommended the establishment of the much-needed Kannada University. Initially, its campus was established at stonemantapas of Hampi, but later on in 1994, the campus was shifted to Vidyaranya. There are two more satellite campuses: one in Badami (125 Kms away from Hampi), an historical place, where the Department of Sculpture and Visual Arts is located; and the other at Kuppalli, the birth place of the poet Kuvepmu, where the Kuvempu Research Centre is located. The present campus of Kannada University spans a hilly terrain of 700 acres situated amidst a natural forest and beautiful lake. The special feature of the Hampi campus it that it is located on a valley setting with fairly thick vegetation preserving many of the indigenous tree, shrub and grass species. A small brook runs through the campus. The campus is named Vidyaranya after the 'founder-Guru' of Vijayanagara Empire. It also means the forest of knowledge. The newly constructed buildings of Kannada University blend into the ambience of the architecture of Hampi historical structures. The University authorities have very thoughtfully selected these ridges for constructing various buildings. The architecture of some of these buildings is also noteworthy, as it has taken many elements from the vijayanagara diction of architecture. Some of the buildings are named after key personalities of the medieval empire, like the Kriyashakthi which is the name of administrative building. Kriyashakthi was an important guru in the history of Vijayanagara Empire and it means ‘The Power of Action’. Another notable features of the institute are the buildings of the Tribal Studies Department which have been constructed keeping in view the tribal housing structures. In short the campus has several unique features of its own, adopted from the natural and historic-cultural heritage of the region.

Single evaluation is adopted in the case of UG courses (in Music and Visual Arts), while double evaluation (if necessary, a third one), comprising one internal and one external evaluation, is followed for PG courses. In the case of the Ph.D. Programme, the University adopts, like most others, two external and one internal evaluation. The process is completed by open defence. The University adopts both central and door evaluation and question papers are set unit-wise in order to cover all prescribed topics in respective papers. Apart from this, the evaluation procedures incorporate regular assignments and seminars by the PG and Ph.D. students; bi-annual evaluation Ph.D. students on the basis of written notes presented by them etc., thus bringing in it elements of regularity and continuity in evaluation procedures.

Facilities at Kannada University

Hostels - The campus has a provision for some faculty quarters that are temporarily used as hostels for students.

Libraries – Akshara meaning ‘Alphabetic Letter is the name of the main library building. It is located on the first floor of a large building. The library is well maintained and has a total collection of about 45,000books. It subscribes to 37 journals in English and 31 journals in Kannada. The library has also a good section for manuscripts including an audio-video section. All departments in the university also have their own, small, libraries, which are used for references sources by both the faculty and students.

Prasaranga - Prasaranga is the publication department of the university. Apart from publication of scholarly works it has taken up publication of textbooks of science and social science in colleges. The First and Second Pre-University Social science and Science textbooks have been translated in Kannada for the larger benefit of local students. These have helped a large number of students as it happens to be the language they are most familiar with.

Journals - The Kannada University also publishes various journals: Kannada Adhyayana (Kannada Studies), Mahila adhyayana (Women Studies), Janapada Karnataka (Folklore of Karnataka), Budakattu Karnataka (Tribal Karnataka), Karnataka Adhyayana (Karnataka studies), Namma Kannada (Our Kannada, devoted to Kannada Linguistics) these have been not just journals but platforms for the scholars who are working in these areas. These journals are first of their kind, as for the first time specialized journals are brought out in Kannada. In order to reach the non-Kannada audience, the University is bringing out a journal in English "Journal of Karnataka Studies", the first issue is under preparation.

Periodicals - Along with these scholarly journals Prasaranga publishes periodicals of the University like Vijnana Sangati (A Companion to Science), Pustaka Mahiti (Book-information), Cheluva Kannada (University news-letter).

Distance Education Centre - The University has a Distance Education Centre for spreading knowledge to a wider section of the society. The Centre offers about 12 post-graduate diploma courses, two post-metric courses and one certificate course.

Sports Centre - There is also a small sports centre on the campus with facilities available for indoor and outdoor games for both students and staff.

Computing Facilities - The main administrative building of the University has a computer unit operating with ten computers. A few Departments are also provided with a computer each.

Information Centre - The Information Centre of the University is a unique centre which is seldom found in the university system elsewhere. The centre provided free information on the university and the state of Karnataka.

Social Work - The University has adopted a school in the neighbourhood with an aim of developing the local communities. The university also gives counselling to Grama Panchayats and Zilla Panchayats as part of its extension activity.

Sculptors and Painters Camps - The Department of Sculpture and Painting organises sculptors and painters camps at National and International levels. This provides a good occasion to staff and students to keep abreast of the latest developments in the contemporary art scene. Traditional artists are also involved in regular teaching work and this enables the students to become familiar with traditional techniques of the area. Both teachers and students exhibit their works at state and national levels and have won several awards in painting and sculpture. Alongside with this, research activity has been given full importance. The topics covered include prehistoric to classical traditions of the area.

Girisime – Girisime is the name of the tribal village which is a mini campus. It houses the department of Tribal studies. The buildings, or rather hut-like structures in this mini-campus, are modelled on the houses of different tribes of Karnataka.

Museum - The University has a large museum which displays both archaeological materials collected from various places in north Karnataka and also a folk section containing fishing and hunting items of some of the surviving simple communities.

Funds - The University receives grants mainly from the state Government and some small assistance from the central government as well. The research projects are taken up with an assistance of funding agencies such as UGC, ICSSR, ICHR, Central and State Sahitya Academy, Kannada development Authority, IGNCA and such others. The University has set up a permanent fund with the donations from NRIs, which are used for research, development, publication and spread of knowledge. The University makes some allocation of funds to each department for research and holding seminars/workshops.

Remedial Coaching - The under privileged SC/ST students are given remedial coaching.

Bhuvana Vijaya - Bhuvana Vijaya means ‘The abode of Victory’, it is the name of the indoor auditorium for academic and cultural activities.

Pampa Sabhangana - Pampa Sabhangana is the local name of the Pampa Seminar Hall. It is named after the Poet of the first available epic of 10 th century in Kannada Literature. It is use for intellectual deliberations on various issues in the form of seminars, conferences, workshops, special lectures all through the year.

Navaranga – Navaranga means ‘Nine Colours’ which is the name of the open-air auditorium resembling Greek theatre situated on the banks of the lake.

Helipad - The university campus has a helipad bed of its own and it is used for receiving high dignitaries.

The minimum duration for PG courses is two years (2 years) and four years is the maximum duration from the date of admission to the course. Candidate has to take readmission if he or she does not complete the course in two years.

Admission to M.A Courses is done as per the criteria of Rule1 and Rule 2. Candidates who have completed three-year graduation course can apply for PG courses (Rule1). Any graduate who has not studied the Cognate Subjects offered for PG courses can take admission. However, such candidates are required to clear the Master Preparatory Programme conducted by the Directorate of Distance Education, Kannada University, Hampi.

Master Preparatory Programme

This test is based on PUC text and includes objective type questions for 100 marks. This test is held on October 16 th 2015 at the Kannada University Campus. Candidates who have scored 35 marks are only eligible for the admission to M.A programme. This test enhances the knowledge of the candidates and introduced with the sole objective to meet the nation standard.

Rule-2 Graduates in respective disciplines

Candidates seeking admission under Rule-2 need to pass the eligibility test. For example, a candidate who has passed BA can take admission to M.A in any of the subject he has studied in his/her graduation.

How to get admission in Doctor of Philosophy?

Eligibility Criteria

  • Master's degree in the concerned subject with a minimum of 55% marks or CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks , from 55% to 50% , or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.

Admission Procedure

Admission is generally offered on the basis of an interview , which is supplemented by a written test if necessary. The Institute will invite a limited number of candidates for a written test and interview based on the academic records, statement of purpose, etc. The final selection will be mainly based on academic credentials, written tests, and/or interviews. The written test is generally based on the topics related to general aptitude (logical reasoning, analytical and numerical ability, etc.), writing skills, and basic courses of various disciplines at the undergraduate level. Candidates who do not qualify in the written test need not appear for the interview. The reserved category candidates will be given due relaxation in cutoff marks as per the norms.

Entrance Exam Syllabus-  The entrance test will cover questions on general knowledge, aptitude, and the concerned subject /discipline in which admission is sought.

How to Pay Ph.D. Entrance Exam Fees? 

Candidates can pay fees either online or offline mode. Complete details of payments is given below:

  • Online Mode-  Deposit the requisite fee of Rs. 5,000/- (Rs. Five Thousand Only) through Net-Banking/Debit/Credit Card after Registration in University Bank Account.
  • Offline Mode-  Deposit the requisite fee of Rs. 5000/- (Rs. Five Thousand Only) in any branch of Punjab National Bank throughout the country on the same working day. (Bank Service Charges will be extra)

Interview- Candidates who pass the Written Test and candidates who are exempted from the Written Test shall be required to appear for an interview to present/discuss their research proposal/area of interest.

Ph. D Course Work guidelines

  • As per UGC Regulations 2016: After admission in Ph.D., a research scholar shall be required to undertake coursework for the minimum period of one semester.
  • Candidates required to complete the coursework during the initial one or two semesters.
  • The women candidates may be allowed a relaxation of two terms/semesters in case of maternity.
  • 75% attendance for coursework classes in required.
  • Teaching work per credit is 12 hours/week . (This may include lectures, seminars, and tutorials).
  • Candidates already holding M.Phil Degree or those who have already completed the course work in M.Phil may be exempted by the Department from the Ph.D. coursework.

Stage-wise Operating Procedure for Ph.D.-Programme

Intake Admission

  • Test on General Research Aptitude and Subject Competency after submitting the Examination Fees
  • Personal Interview After Qualifying Examination

Ph.D. Registration

  • After qualifying the entrance test, Checking of Eligibility and Document Verification
  • Submission of 1st year Course Fee after Document verification and accessing Eligibility of Registration

Course Work

  • One Semester Course Work including 90 hours of Mandatory Contact Hours (Minimum 75% Attendance Compulsory)
  • All Ph.D. candidates have to appear in the PhD-Course work Examination and has to score more than 60% marks failing which the course work will be repeated in next semester.

RDC or DRC (Research Degree Committee)

  • After successful completion of Course Work, Guide will be allotted to candidates.
  • Candidate has to appear for Presentation of Topic and Research Proposal within 12-24 weeks after Course work results compulsorily otherwise a penalty of 5000/- will be imposed on the candidate.
  • RDC presentation will be held in the supervision of External Examiner (Subject Expert).
  • Finalization/Modification of the topic if any is to be submitted within 8 weeks of the date of RDC, otherwise candidate has to reappear in RDC by submitting the penalty of 5000/-
  • Evaluation of Modification of the topic will be held and the letter of RDC with the final topic will be published and will be sent to the candidate as well as Guide/Supervisor.

Semester Wise Progress Report - I-II

  • After topic approval from RDC , the Candidate has to present his work within 12-24 weeks of the date of finalization of the topic. This presentation will be internal and will be held in front of the University subject expert and Guide.

Semester Wise Progress Report - III-IV

  • After Completion of research work , the candidate has to present his/her work in front of External Examiner (Subject Expert) and has to defend his work.
  • This pre-thesis presentation must be held in between 36-48 weeks of the finalization of the topic.

Pre-thesis Submission

  • Candidate has to submit his/her complete thesis in the Examination cell with a Plagiarism report in spiral binding (2 hard copies) and 2 CDs/DVDs (soft copies).
  • Research Advisory Committee will also, check the plagiarism before sending it to evaluators.
  • After getting an evaluation of the thesis and correction/Modification if any, the final date of Viva/Defence will be notified to the candidate as well as one of the thesis evaluators as External Examiner.
  • Candidate has to submit his/her thesis in hardbound (6 copies) to the Examination cell on or before the date of the final defense.

Modes of Ph.D. Program: 

All the PhD programs may be offered as full-time or part-time

Full-Time PhD Programme:

  • Candidates in full-time mode are expected to do research work in Campus and should be available during working hours for curricular, co-curricular, and related activities.

Part-Time Ph.D. Program:

  • Any faculty member of the University possessing the minimum prescribed qualifications can apply in the prescribed form to work on a part-time basis for a Ph.D. degree.
  • Employees with a minimum of five years of experience in Government, Local Bodies, recognized Institutes, Public Sector Undertakings, and Non-Governmental Organizations, provided the candidate has experience in the relevant field of research for at least three continuous years out of five years of service and published, at least, two papers in standard journals or reports/monologues/ book of the equivalent standard or a patent registered, in the concerned subject/area of research.
  • For part-time Ph.D. candidates have to submit the No Objection Certificate (NOC) stating that he/she is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis, before submission.

Note: In case of candidates working outside the University area, a Co-guide duly recognized by the University may be permitted, if necessary, in addition to the University Guide / Supervisor on the recommendation of the Doctoral Committee.

Students can apply directly through online mode on the university's official website. Candidates must follow the following Steps while applying online Application Form.

  • Visit University Website
  • Find the notification page
  • Click on the application online for M.Phil Ph.D. Entrance Exam Button.
  • Fill all the required details in the columns.
  • After that upload a passport-size photo (size not more than 200kb).
  • Re-check all the details filled in the application form and then click on the submit button.
  • Now Proceed to pay the entrance cum registration through an available mode of payment.

Note:- After Successfully Submission of the application form, a student must download their application form.

  • Examination Fee of Rs. 5000/- 
  • Tuition Fee of Ist Year 40,000/- at Interview Time
  • Ist Year Pending Fee of 40,000/- before Course Work Examination,
  • Guide Fee and Synopsis Submission Fee of 30, 000/- fee before RDC,
  • 2nd Year Course Fee of 40,000/- (Starting of 2nd Year or 3rd Sem)
  • 2nd Year Course Fee of 40,000/- (Starting of 4th Sem)
  • 3rd Year Course Fee of 40,000/- (Starting of 3rd Year)
  • Thesis Submission Fee of 10,000/- 
  • Examination and Accommodation fees of 8000/- at the time of Course work Examination
