In earlier days, people who passed away left their assets and memories behind. But now, in the world of social media, people also leave a Facebook account. Whether it's your grandma who passed away or a close friend, they are most likely to have an account on Facebook.

Anyone can take advantage of the content and account no longer in use. But what can be done to avoid it? Facebook allows its users to memorialize or remove a deceased person's Facebook account. You just need to follow a few simple steps.

How to Get a Facebook Account Memorialized

A memorialized Facebook profile becomes a platform for people to remember their loved ones. You can share their memories and talk about them. Once an account is memorialized, it gets “Remembering” in front of the name.

A memorialized account can be created by the designated legacy contact. However, if there’s no legacy contact, Facebook automatically memorializes the account of the person it knows has passed away. No one can log into that account, but legacy contacts can accept requests, add posts and manage privacy.

To get a Facebook account memorialized, follow these steps:

  • On top, you can find information related to memorialized accounts. Scroll down to enter the required information. In the Who Passed Away section, enter the profile URL of the deceased person.
  • Facebook requires proof that the request you are submitting is genuine. You need to attach Documentation of Death issued by an authentic source. Users can upload a PDF or image. Documents available in hard copy can be uploaded by taking a picture. You can also convert these images into PDFs with the right software .
  • Enter your email address, so Facebook can contact you. If the deceased user mentioned a legacy contact, they have the right to delete the account if needed. Otherwise, a memorialized account will stay on Facebook to be remembered.

Once the account is memorialized, Facebook notifies its legacy contact or the loved one who requested the report. The process takes some time, so you must remain patient.

If your case is genuine, Facebook allows you to hold a fundraiser and let people worldwide help you manage money for the deceased person. Use valuable tips to make your fundraising campaign a success .

How to Get a Facebook Account Removed After the Person Dies

For some people, having a memorial account of the deceased person is a way to keep them in their thoughts, but others might think the opposite. Request an account deletion beforehand if you do not wish to keep your information online after death.

Only a legacy contact can request Facebook to remove an account whose owner has passed away. When someone puts their account on Delete After Death , it automatically removes all personal data like posts, photos, and messages from Facebook. With this feature, your legacy contact does not have the right to maintain the account.

Facebook takes accounts of the deceased very seriously and ensures their wish to memorialize or delete the account is followed. This is why it is mandatory to provide Facebook with genuine documentation.

Here are the steps on how to get your deceased loved one’s account removed from Facebook:

  • In the Full Name section, enter your official credentials.
  • Add your email address currently in use under the Your Contact Email section. Facebook might contact you and acquire more details if needed.
  • After that, enter the deceased person’s name as written on their Facebook profile. It can differ from the name mentioned on their death certificate. This is why Facebook recommends using your actual name when creating a profile.
  • Copy the URL from their Facebook profile and paste it under the Link (URL) to the Person's Profile section. To copy a URL on mobile, go to the deceased person's Profile , tap the three dots, and under Profile Link , select Copy Profile Link .
  • Choose the reason why you are requesting the removal of this account. Facebook also entertains special requests only after the account has been memorialized. Tap the I Understand check box.
  • Enter the documents required by Facebook to confirm the death of that person. It can be an original death certificate. For those who do not have access to a death certificate, you can provide anything like a birth certificate, power of attorney, or an obituary. Here is a list of the acceptable documentation needed for Facebook account deletion .
  • Choose an image or PDF depending on the document you were issued. Make sure they are authentic and come with a state seal for assurance.
  • Under When Did They Pass Away , select the date of death.
  • Press Send .

Facebook takes a couple of days to review a request. After that, the account will be deleted if you can satisfy Facebook that the person has actually passed away.

If your account is to be deleted, the legacy contact will be able to download the Facebook account data to save what's necessary.

Get Your Loved Ones Memorialized or Removed From Facebook Once They Die

When people pass away, their Facebook account is still left running. Users must appoint a legacy contact in their life. This contact has access to their content and posts.

As a legacy contact, you can get that person’s account memorialized. This means that the account stays there for people to remember the one who passed. You can post content from that account as well.

However, if the deceased wished not to remain on Facebook after death, their legacy contact can get the account removed. We discussed both methods to help you make a sound decision for the one who is no longer in your life.

How to memorialize someone's Facebook account

Take the reins of your loved one's memorial page.

facebook report a death

What happens to someone's Facebook account when they die? Well, if they had the foresight to designate a legacy contact prior to passing away, Facebook will hand the reins of their account over to their designated contact upon proof of their death. But what if your loved one -- like the majority of young, invincible social media users -- never got around to getting their social media affairs in order?

If one of your Facebook friends has passed away and their account is still active, here are your options.

Legacy contacts

Legacy contacts are named by the account holder prior to their death -- a family member or a friend who will be able to manage the person's memorialized account when they die. Legacy contacts can post a pinned post at the top of the deceased user's Timeline, respond to new friend requests, and update the person's profile picture and cover photo. They can also, with the deceased user's permission, download an archive of the user's photos, Timeline posts, and profile information.

Legacy contacts cannot log into the deceased user's account and see any of their private information, such as Facebook messages. They also cannot remove the user's past posts, photos or friends.

legacy-1.png

To choose a legacy contact, open up your Facebook account and go to Settings > Security > Legacy Contact . Click Edit , type in your friend's name, and click Add .

legacy-2.png

You will have the choice to send them a message about your choice immediately -- click Send to send them the message, or click Not Now if you'd prefer they not know about your decision. You'll need to eventually tell them, of course, because they will need to ask Facebook to memorialize your account when you die.

legacy-3.png

Once you've chosen a legacy contact, you'll see the option to allow them to download a copy of your Facebook account under Data Archive Permission. To allow your legacy contact to do this, click the checkbox and click Close .

If you do not choose a legacy contact before you die, nobody will be able to manage your Facebook account -- but they can still memorialize it.

If your friend has passed away without setting up a legacy contact, you can still request that Facebook memorialize their account using this form . You will need to provide the person's name, approximate date of death, and optional proof of death (such as a link to an obituary).

A memorialized account will have the word "Remembering" in front of the person's name, and will not show up in Facebook ads, "People You May Know," or send out reminders on the person's birthday. Memorialized accounts cannot be logged into, so memorializing someone's account also prevents the account from getting hacked.

If you're an immediate family member, you can request that the account be deleted instead of memorialized. To do this, use Facebook's Special Request for Deceased Person's Account form . You will need to provide the deceased person's full name, email address, date of death and the URL of their Timeline. You will also need to provide proof that you are an immediate family member -- you can do this with a birth certificate, death certificate, or proof of authority.

Who Should Post a Death Announcement on Facebook?

A designated immediate family member is the ideal person to create a death announcement post for Facebook. Once it's posted, others are then at liberty to share the post as long as the creator makes the post public and says it's okay to share. The people planning the funeral will have all the correct and current information, which is why they should create the post.

Who Should You Post a Facebook Death Announcement For?

It's best to only post a Facebook death announcement for someone who had a Facebook account while they were living. If the person had a Facebook page, you'll be able to reach their entire network of friends and family. If they didn't have a Facebook account, they may not appreciate you using that medium to share their personal information, even after death.

When Should You Post a Facebook Death Announcement?

You may want to share a death announcement as soon as you hear the news, but it's best to wait a day or two. You want to ensure all close family members and friends have been notified in a more private way before sharing the news publicly.

Tips for Writing a Facebook Death Announcement

So, what do you write on Facebook when someone dies? Keep in mind that a death announcement is not an obituary. It's a short note to inform others of the person's death and provide information on how people can learn more about services.

Have Good Intentions

The intention of sharing a Facebook death announcement should always be to inform. If you're just looking for sympathy or attention, you shouldn't create a post. No matter your feelings about other people, this is also not the time to block people from seeing the post.

Start With a Sad News Warning

People read Facebook messages at all hours of the day and night, so it's a courtesy to add a warning before the actual announcement. This way, if someone is heading into work or an important meeting, they can wait and read the news later if needed. A simple statement like, "Be advised, this post bears sad news" will work.

Keep It Short

Your message can include around 63,000 characters at the maximum on Facebook, but sharing the actual death news in the second sentence ensures people see it without opening the entire message.

Keep It Concise

Since this isn't an obituary, you don't need to include the story of the deceased's life. Essential information to include is:

  • Full name of the deceased
  • Date of death
  • Cause of death (specific or general)
  • Links to more detailed information such as an online obituary or memorial site
  • The date, time, and location of services if they have been planned (otherwise, add a statement that more information is forthcoming)
  • Permission to share the post (or not)

Stay Somber and Respectful

A Facebook death announcement is not the place to use a bunch of emojis. Keep the tone of your message elegant and somber. Start the notice with an opening statement such as, "It is with great sadness our family announces the death of..."

Use Text to Share the Message

While you can share photos, memes, and videos or even do a Facebook Live, it's best to share the news using only text. This ensures people see the whole message, and they can go back to reference it if needed. You can include a photo of the deceased after your text, but make sure it is just of the deceased.

Check Your Post Privacy

If you want others to share the death announcement post, you need to make sure your post is public. If you want to be the only person sharing it, make sure the post is private and ask that others make requests for you to share it rather than sharing on their own.

The family asks that you share these posts if you have access to Amanda's social network that we do not.

Memorialized Facebook Pages

Facebook has a great feature that allows a deceased person's page to remain on the site as a memorial.

  • You can appoint a legacy contact while you're living who will be responsible for managing your memorial page after your death.
  • You can also choose, while you're living, to have your Facebook page deleted after you die.
  • If you don't make either choice, your page will automatically be memorialized when Facebook learns of your death.
  • A memorialized page shows the word "Remembering" next to the deceased person's name, so everyone knows it's a memorial page.
  • You can also create a group page on Facebook to serve as a memorial page for a deceased loved one.

Sharing Sad News on Social Media

Social media is a normal way many people communicate today. You can use websites like Facebook to share both happy and sad news with a wide network of people. Keep in mind how you approach obituaries, funerals, and sympathy cards, and your post will surely be appropriate. If you didn't include funeral details in your death announcement, you may want to make a separate funeral announcement .

Whether you share posts on Facebook often, periodically, or not at all, you may wonder what happens to your account after you die.

Will it exist forever and ultimately cause confusion? Whose responsibility is it, if anyone’s, to notify your network and the world that you’re no longer living?

Jump ahead to these sections:

  • Step 1: Familiarize Yourself with Memorialization

Step 2: Go to Memorialization Settings in Settings

Step 3: choose a legacy contact (or become one), step 4: clean up the account, step 5: serve as legacy contact, requesting memorialization on behalf of someone else, choosing to delete a facebook account, can you un-memorialize a facebook account.

Memorializing a Facebook account is a way to keep your account active after you die. Instead of your Facebook name as is, memorialization changes it to read “Remembering” plus your name. The name change makes it clear that you have passed to your Facebook friends and anyone searching for you.

Tip: If you are the executor for a deceased loved one, figuring out social media accounts and other aspects of handling their unfinished business can be overwhelming without a way to organize your process. We have a post-loss checklist  that will help you ensure that your loved one's family, estate, and other affairs are taken care of.

How to memorialize a Facebook account step-by-step

Step 1: Familiarize Yourself With Memorialization

Once a Facebook account has been memorialized, it will not come up in ads, in suggested friends for “People You May Know”, or birthday notifications.

Keep in mind that it’s not possible to un-memorialize an account, which we describe in further detail later.

Under the “Settings” tab on Facebook, you will find “Memorialization Settings.”

In this section, you can familiarize yourself with memorialization, read frequently asked questions , and appoint a legacy contact. You can read more about how to create and update a legacy contact on Facebook in our guide.

A legacy contact will not have total autonomy over your page’s content. A legacy contact is sort of an administrator to help other friends and loved ones keep your memory alive.

You may appoint someone on your friend list as a legacy contact at any time. They’ll be notified that you chose them. It’s not currently possible to add someone as a legacy contact if you aren’t friends on Facebook.

What if you’re chosen as a legacy contact and don’t want to be one? Send your friend a message or talk to them in person. The two of you can come up with another friend capable of being a legacy contact or another solution.

You may already audit your social media accounts and check your friend list from time to time. Or you may choose to clean up your Facebook account as a precaution or “just in case.” If you’re not already doing this, try to block out time for an annual or semi-annual cleanup.

You can also help out a parent or older relative who may be less familiar with social media.

During the cleanup process, you can add or remove friends, delete photos or pictures, and edit personal details.  It’s also a good time to choose a legacy contact if you have not already.

What if you want to remove something from an account that is already memorialized? You can remove certain content, but content that violates Facebook’s community standards.

If you’re a legacy contact and accept this responsibility, what can you do when someone dies? As a legacy contact, you’re able to:

  • Change the person's profile picture and cover photo.
  • Write a pinned post on the timeline.
  • Respond to new friend requests.
  • Change who can see and who can post tributes. Tributes are posts that add to the memorial of the person.
  • Delete tribute posts.
  • Change who can see posts that your loved one is tagged in.
  • Remove tags of your loved one which someone else has posted.
  • If the account holder turned on timeline review, the legacy contact will be able to turn off the requirement to review posts and tags before they appear in the tributes section.

If you notice a deceased friend or a loved one’s account is still active and hasn't been memorialized, you can make a request. Facebook won’t share the account login details with you, but they can add you as a legacy contact upon request.

How is this done? First, you’ll have to submit proof that the person passed away.

If you choose to submit such a request, make sure that you also reach out to the person’s next of kin, if possible, to make sure that you’re the appropriate choice. Family members may wish to have the person’s account deleted instead, and it’s best to honor these wishes.

How to delete a loved one's Facebook account

When you pass away, you can opt for having your account automatically deleted. Instead of a page, your friends and family can instead create their own group to share memories.

If you’re managing an account as a legacy contact and it becomes overwhelming, or there is some other reason you wish to delete an account, you can do so. You’ll have to contact Facebook and submit proof of your authority and relationship to the person, as well as an obituary or memorial letter about the person.

If for some reason your account or a loved one’s has been memorialized on accident, you should contact Facebook, first and foremost. Once an account has been memorialized, it is not typical to reverse this action unless there's a good reason. Due to heightened security and privacy measures, account hacking is less likely than before.

After all, Facebook doesn’t even provide legacy contacts with the login info of the deceased person. If you want to share your Facebook password with a loved one after you die, we recommend using a password manager .

Facebook is One Piece of Your Online Legacy

A memorialized Facebook account is just one part of an online legacy. It’s likely that Google searches will yield other details about any person’s life.

If you choose to memorialize a Facebook account, it may give you peace of mind to create a space for those in your network. They will likely have an easier time staying in touch, keeping the memory of the deceased alive, and leaning on one another in times of sorrow.

Choosing to delete your account or a loved one’s instead is fine, too. Perhaps you found another solution for an online memorial , or you don’t see the need for one. Memories of the deceased can live on just as vividly online as they can in the hearts and minds of those who love them.

Before you memorialize or delete a loved one's account, you may want to consider preserving their digital photos. Read our guide on how to download all Facebook photos for more.

How to Announce a Death on Social Media + Examples

Photo of author

Today we’re going to talk about what to post when someone dies. If you’ve lost a loved one, how do you know when it’s the right time to share the sad news with the world on social media? And what do you say?

Or perhaps you know someone who has lost a loved one, and you want to show your love and support. When announcing a death on Facebook (or Twitter, Instagram, or other social media), what is okay to post? What should you say, and what sort of etiquette should you follow?

Learn everything you need to know here. We’ll also include plenty of examples of Facebook posts to share when someone dies.

Etiquette for Announcing a Death Online

In this modern age, most families choose to announce the death of a loved one online, often via Facebook or other social media. Just a couple of decades ago – before the Internet and social media became so central to how we communicate with each other – when someone passed away, an obituary or death notice was published in the local newspaper. Extended family, friends, and neighbors would read when and where the services would take place so that they could attend. These days, the same thing is done, just through social media more so than newspapers.

Before we go any further, let’s make one thing clear: you shouldn’t announce a death anywhere if you aren’t the next-of-kin or immediate family. The only exception would be if the family requests you to be the one to announce the event. Even then, it is a good idea to inform other close family members and close friends personally – don’t let them read about it as they’re scrolling through photos and status updates. It’s just the right thing to do.

Once the news of the deceased person has been made public by the immediate family, then you have the freedom to share the funeral information with your circle of friends, express your grief, pay tribute to the departed, and send a sympathy message to others in the family.

While it’s not common, sometimes immediate family members will not want any details regarding the service to be made public, whether it be due to the cause of death, to avoid family drama with distant relatives, or what have you. In this case, the directing funeral home will not publish an obituary or any service information, perhaps not even the deceased’s full name or date of death, and no one is expected to share it. As an alternative to sharing your sympathies publicly online, you could instead make a phone call, text, send a private message, visit in person, or mail a sympathy card with a handwritten note or words of comfort. These are all different ways, outside of social media, you can still show you care.

A good way to know if you should post or not: if the funeral home has published the services (meaning the funeral will not be private), it is okay for you to share them, as well.

  • Make the death announcement public only after sharing personally with close family and friends
  • If you’re not the immediate family, wait until the news is public before sharing anything
  • You can share memories, photos, and stories, but for the initial announcement keep it simple
  • Pay tribute to their life and legacy while being respectful of their memory
  • Do not bring out grievances, failures, or embarrassments
  • Share the funeral information if it is a public funeral, such as with a Facebook obituary post
  • It’s ok to ask others to share photos and stories with you, as often time the best way is through social media posts

Responding to a Death Announcement

Timing. Wait until the family has announced the death publicly before you express condolences or a memorial tribute. You don’t want close relatives to hear first from you.

Comment publicly. Reply to the grieving family’s Facebook post (or other social media post) with an expression of condolences – it means a lot to the family’s grieving process and only takes a moment.

Urns Made in the USA

Large Planturn Cremation Urn in Elm & Pecan

Message privately. If you’re close to a grieving family member, also be sure to send your condolences in a text message.

Be respectful. Focus on the positive by honoring their memory.

Avoid drama. Do not air grievances, make jokes, or share embarrassing stories.

Be careful with humor. Be sensitive to the wider family; your “inside joke” might be meaningful to someone who is a close friend, but it’s the wrong thing to share if it may offend or upset others who do not understand the context.

Share memories. Send photos, videos, and stories with the family

Visit their memorial page. If they’ve created a memorial website , write your condolences and share memories there.

Use discretion. Be aware and respectful of private information. Remember to only include information that anyone would be comfortable sharing with a few hundred people

Review before posting. Think your response through and make sure it is appropriate, respectful, and free from any spelling or factual errors.

What Not to Include When Posting About a Death

Before we take a look at examples of what to say on Facebook when someone dies, is there anything in particular you should avoid saying? First, it may be best not to include any details as to the nature of the death, any private or personal details, or anything else the family would not want posted for the world to see. When in doubt, simply reach out to them and ask.

Also avoid making the post for someone who passed away about you and your feelings, or a similar loss that you have experienced, rather than the deceased and their family. It’s a fine line to walk, especially when you are also on a grief journey over the loss of someone special to you, but it’s what etiquette dictates. Check and double-check that your post is emotionally mature and appropriate.

Finally, don’t make a post on social media about the death of a loved one, just to leave it at that. Attend the funeral or memorial service, personally follow up with the grieving person or family to ensure that they are doing okay, and check in occasionally after the fact. Posting on social media is nice, but really making an effort to be there for those who are grieving will go a long way in showing them just how much you care.

Death Announcement Posts & Examples

When it comes to posting about death on social media examples, there are three essential categories:

  • Death announcements
  • Memorial tributes
  • Condolences

Death announcements , death notifications, or posts about death in any regard must be made by the immediate family. Using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram can be a perfectly acceptable way to announce that someone has passed away, but if you are not the closest one to the decedent (spouse, parent, adult child), remember to wait to post your tributes, condolences, or any other information until you know the family has made the news public.

If you are the one making the death announcement on social media, here are some helpful things to include in your bereavement post:

  • Date, time, and location of the funeral service, memorial service, or celebration of life
  • Date, time, and location of the visitation or viewing/scattering ceremony/graveside service
  • Link to the online memorial page (this is often hosted on the funeral home’s website)
  • Link to a GoFundMe or other platform for service fund donations
  • Charity or organization to donate to in lieu of flowers
  • Photo(s) of you and your loved one together in happier times
  • Any other pertinent information the public can know

Now let’s take a look at some social media death announcement examples for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter posts. Keep in mind that the same words and principles apply to all social media platforms.

Facebook Death Announcements

  • It’s hard to find the right words to say this. My heart is breaking as I announce that my Uncle Jonas has died. He was a light to all who knew him. He will be laid to rest on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Bleeding Heart Cemetery in Detroit. The time is TBD.
  • The Declan Family is saddened to announce the loss of their father, Sam. The visitation will be held Sunday from 1-3 pm at Langley Funeral Home in Cavalier. Cremation will follow. • The funeral arrangements for James Aven are pending at Beck Funeral Home in Benson, North Dakota. Click on the link for more information: www.beckfuneralhome.com
  • The death of a family member is never easy, especially when it is your child. My son was the light that held back the darkness. My life will never be the same without him. He was truly a hero and his death will be felt by everyone he’s left behind.

P’nut the squirrel, beloved pet and internet sensation, euthanized after being seized by ny state.

P’nut the Squirrel, of internet fame, has been euthanized after the pet was seized by New York state earlier this week, according to the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The 7-year-old gray rescue squirrel, commonly referred to as P’Nut on Instagram , Facebook and TikTok , was put to death, along with Fred the raccoon, so that the animals could be tested for rabies, according to a statement from the agency obtained by WETM .

A photo of Peanut in a tiny felt cowboy hat.

P’nut’s guardian, Mark Longo, took to Instagram to memorialize his beloved pet in a video.

Through tears, Longo, with his girlfriend at his side, said, “P’nut was the best thing that ever happened to us.”

Peanut, just a little guy, fits cozily in a baseball cap.

“RIP MY BEST FRIEND. Thank you for the best 7 years of my life. Thank you for bringing so much joy to us and the world. I’m sorry I failed you but thank you for everything,” Longo wrote in a caption to the post announcing P’nut’s death.

Longo also asked fans for financial help for a “legal battle” and for his nonprofit P’Nut’s Freedom Farm .

The DEC claims that P’nut, who was notably docile and friendly over the course of his very public-facing life, bit one of the investigators on the hand while being confiscated from his Elmira home on Wednesday.

Peanut had a healthy appetite and was known for munching on waffles.

“In addition, a person involved with the investigation was bitten by the squirrel. To test for rabies, both animals were euthanized. The animals are being tested for rabies and anyone who has been in contact with these animals is strongly encouraged to consult their physician,” the DEC statement read, according to WETM.

P’nut was rescued by Longo, after the Connecticut native witnessed the animal’s mother hit by a car.

The resilient and adorable P’nut inspired Longo to move to upstate New York last year and found P’Nut’s Freedom Farm, an animal sanctuary and rescue operation.

On Wednesday, P’nut and Fred the raccoon were seized by the Department of Environmental Conservation after multiple anonymous complaints about wild animals living in the Longo house.

“Well internet, you WON,” Longo wrote in a caption after the animals were seized. “You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness.”

“To the group of people who called DEC, there’s a special place in hell for you,” Longo added.

In a statement to The Post on Wednesday, the DEC said it was responding to complaints of a rabies vector species that was in the home, namely Fred the raccoon.

Liam payne dead at 31 after fall from buenos aires hotel room, liam payne one direction star dead at 31 ... fell from hotel balcony.

  • Exclusive Details

Remembering Liam Payne

3:33 PM PT -- Sources close to the situation tell TMZ ... Liam Payne and his girlfriend Kate Cassidy arrived in Argentina on September 30, posting several social media posts together showing them having fun on vacation. We're told she left Argentina on the 14th. Liam stayed behind, and checked into the CasaSur Palermo Hotel.

We're told someone at the hotel called 911 to report an "aggressive" male at the hotel today ... which lines up with what witnesses told us about Liam's behavior in the lobby.

Liam Payne is dead after a fall from his hotel balcony in Argentina ... TMZ has learned.

The former One Direction singer died Wednesday evening. Several witnesses at the hotel where he was staying in Buenos Aires tell us Liam fell from his room on the 3rd floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel. We do not know if it was intentional or accidental.

TMZ has seen a photo showing Liam's body on the deck at the hotel with tables and chairs nearby. You can clearly see his tattoos -- a clock on his left forearm, and a scorpion on his abdomen -- which helped us confirm early reports from witnesses.

We're told this happened shortly after 5 PM in Buenos Aires, and that Liam had been acting erratic in the hotel lobby earlier -- he smashed his laptop, and had to be carried back to his room.

Police and other first responders are all around the hotel now ... and authorities have put up a red tent over the body as they begin their investigation into Liam's death.

He had been in Argentina recently for a Niall Horan concert earlier in the month, and the 1D bandmates actually reunited at the show.

Liam was only 16 years old when he joined One Direction ... and the group became the biggest boyband in the world after their 2010 launch on "The X Factor." The band ultimately broke up in 2015, and he was considered one of their main songwriters.

As we reported ... Liam revealed in June 2021 that he struggled with alcohol and prescription drug addictions at one point when One Direction was on tour, and things got so bad he had "severe" suicidal thoughts.

Earlier this week, there were reports about Liam's ex-fiancée Maya Henry alleging he'd left her after asking her to get an abortion. Her attorneys had been trying to send him a cease-and-desist letter to stop contacting her.

It's unclear, at this point, if that triggered his erratic behavior at the hotel.

Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus dies at 95

ATLANTA ( WANF /Gray News) - Bernie Marcus, co-founder of Home Depot, the home improvement retail chain that changed the American business landscape, has died. He was 95.

The Home Depot announced his passing on Tuesday morning.

“The entire Home Depot family is deeply saddened by the death of our co-founder Bernie Marcus. We owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to Bernie,” they said in a statement. “He was a master merchant and a retail visionary. But even more importantly, he valued our associates, customers and communities above all. He’s left us with an invaluable legacy and the backbone of our company: our values.”

Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus appears on "Cavuto: Coast to Coast," with anchor Neil...

Born in 1929 and raised by his Russian Jewish parents in Newark, New Jersey, Marcus went to work at age 13, abandoning his ambitions to become a Harvard-educated doctor to eventually earn a degree from Rutgers. He worked briefly as a pharmacist before entering retail sales.

By the mid-1970s, Marcus was an executive at Los Angeles-based Handy Dan Home Improvement Centers. There he met Arthur Blank. After the two were fired in April 1978, their friend and business associate Ken Langon convinced them to open a business.

Together, Marcus, Blank and Langone founded The Home Depot , and opened their first-ever two stores in Atlanta on June 22, 1979.

Within two years The Home Depot went public. Today the retail chain has more than 2,300 stores in North America.

In a statement, Blank said he was “heartbroken” at the news.

“Today, I’ve lost a father-figure, mentor, brother and business and life partner,” he wrote. “While this loss is profoundly painful, I am grateful for the close to 60 years we spent together, navigating challenges and celebrating successes, and I am honored to have been part of Bernie’s remarkable life.”

Marcus retired from actively working at The Home Depot in 2002, and then donated more than $200 million from his personal fortune to build the Georgia Aquarium , one of the world’s largest. Since it opened in November 2005, the aquarium has become one of Atlanta’s top tourist destinations.

In 1999 and in conjunction with writer Bob Andelman, Marcus and Blank co-wrote “Built From Scratch: How a Couple of Regular Guys Grew The Home Depot from Nothing to $30 Billion.” The book was released to coincide with The Home Depot’s 20th anniversary.

In 2009, Marcus was inducted as a Georgia Trustee by the Georgia Historical Society and the governor’s office.
