Choosing the right essay topic is foundational to crafting a compelling and insightful essay, affecting reader engagement and the quality of writing.

Understanding the different types of essay topics (persuasive, narrative, descriptive, expository) helps align your topic with the essay's purpose and objectives.

Brainstorming and considering factors such as personal interest, audience appeal, and resource availability are critical steps in selecting an appropriate topic.

Narrowing down your topic list is essential; it involves evaluating each potential topic against key factors to find the most suitable one.

Academic, creative, narrative, opinion, and persuasive essay topics each offer unique opportunities for exploration and expression, catering to various interests and objectives.

Effective research techniques, utilizing tools like Google Scholar, and organization strategies such as mind mapping and outlining are vital for developing your essay topic.

Overcoming writer's block through finding inspiration, switching perspectives, and staying open to new ideas is crucial for maintaining momentum in the writing process.

Fine-tuning your essay topic to ensure clarity, specificity, and alignment with your assignment's scope can dramatically enhance the quality of your essay.

Seeking feedback on your essay topic and thesis statement from peers and instructors can provide valuable insights and lead to significant improvements.

The process of selecting, developing, and refining an essay topic is an iterative one that requires curiosity, creativity, and an open mind.

The journey of crafting an engaging and insightful essay begins with selecting the right topic. This choice is more than just a matter of personal preference; it's about finding a subject that resonates with your audience, aligns with your academic or creative goals, and provides ample scope for exploration and argumentation.

A well-chosen topic not only captivates your readers but also enriches your writing experience, making the process of researching, brainstorming, and drafting the essay more enjoyable and fulfilling. With this comprehensive guide, we aim to equip you with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the maze of potential essay topics and select one that promises a compelling and insightful read.

At its core, an essay topic serves as the foundation upon which your entire essay is built. It provides a focal point around which your arguments, narratives, descriptions, or analyses are structured. But what makes a good essay topic?

An effective essay topic does more than simply provide a subject to write about; it shapes the direction and structure of the essay, guiding your research, argument development, and writing style. It acts as a promise to your readers, offering them a glimpse into the insights, stories, or arguments they can expect to encounter as they delve into your essay.

Understanding the various types of essay topics can help you better align your topic with the objectives of your essay. Here are the main categories:

Persuasive : These topics require you to take a stance on a particular issue and persuade your readers of your position using evidence and reasoning.

Narrative : Narrative topics ask you to tell a story, usually from a personal perspective, that conveys a certain theme or lesson.

Descriptive : With descriptive topics, the goal is to paint a vivid picture of a person, place, event, or object, emphasizing sensory details.

Expository : These topics are focused on explaining or analyzing a concept, phenomenon, or process in a clear and logical manner.

Each type of essay topic opens up different avenues for exploration and expression, allowing you to tailor your approach based on the essay’s purpose and your personal interests.

Through this section, it becomes clear that selecting the right essay topic is a nuanced process that involves understanding not only your essay's objective but also the different types of topics available. Providing a solid foundation, this understanding is crucial as we delve further into how to choose the ideal essay topic.

The significance of selecting an apt essay topic cannot be overstated; it is the bedrock upon which a compelling narrative or argument is built. How then does one navigate the myriad options to zero in on the perfect topic? Below we elucidate strategies that can streamline this decision-making process.

Understanding the purpose of your essay is the first critical step. Is it to inform, persuade, narrate, or describe? Aligning your topic with this purpose ensures cohesiveness in your writing, allowing for a more targeted approach to research and composition.

Brainstorming is a powerful technique to generate a plethora of ideas without the constraints of critical judgment. Techniques like mind mapping or free writing can be particularly effective, encouraging a flow of ideas from which you can later select the most promising ones.

When sifting through potential topics, consider:

Personal Interest : Writing about something you're passionate about can be both motivating and rewarding, leading to a richer, more engaged essay.

Audience Appeal : Consider what your intended readers might find intriguing or valuable, ensuring relevance and engagement.

Resource Availability : Ensure there is ample material available to research on your chosen topic. Lack of information can stall your writing process.

Once you have a list of potential topics, evaluate each against the factors above. Narrowing down to the most suitable topic involves a balance between personal interest, resource availability, and audience appeal. This refined list becomes the fertile ground from which your perfect essay topic will emerge.

Diving into specific categories to explore popular essay topics can spark inspiration and give you a direction for your writing journey.

Argumentative Essay Topics : These could range from the implications of social media on society to debates on climate change policies. Engaging with current societal issues can provide a rich tapestry for argumentation.

Compare and Contrast Essay Topics : Exploring the similarities and differences between historical periods, literary works, or theoretical concepts can yield insights into the nuances of your subject matter.

Cause and Effect Essay Topics : Topics like the impact of technology on human interaction invite exploration of the connections between phenomena, encouraging deep analysis.

Sources such as Kibin offer extensive lists of topic ideas across these categories, providing a useful resource for writers seeking inspiration.

Creative and narrative essays offer a canvas for personal expression, allowing for exploration of:

Personal growth experiences: Reflecting on milestones or challenges can offer profound insights.

Historical events through a personal lens: Personalizing history can provide a unique perspective on well-trodden paths.

In an era dominated by information (and misinformation), topics that encourage critical thinking about technology, environmental issues, and politics are both relevant and engaging. Websites like ProCon.org can offer balanced views on controversial issues that make for compelling persuasive essays.

Once you've selected a topic, the next step is to delve into research and development. Effective strategies include:

Utilizing academic databases, credible websites, and primary sources can provide a strong foundation for your essay. Tools like Google Scholar offer access to scholarly articles across various disciplines.

Organizing your thoughts and research findings using mind maps or outlines can clarify your essay's direction. This visual organization can highlight connections between ideas, facilitating a more coherent argument or narrative.

A well-crafted thesis statement defines the scope of your essay, providing a clear argument or premise that guides your writing. It acts as a beacon, keeping your essay focused on the central theme or argument.

Writer's block can be a significant hurdle in the essay-writing process. Strategies to overcome this include:

Finding Inspiration : Sometimes, stepping away to seek inspiration elsewhere — be it a walk in the park or a change of environment — can help refresh your perspective.

Switching Perspectives : Revisiting your topic from a different angle or considering the counterarguments can unlock new avenues of thought.

Ensuring your topic is clear and specific, adjusting the scope to fit your assignment, and seeking feedback can refine your essay topic, making it ready for the writing phase. This fine-tuning process is essential for honing your topic into a focused and engaging subject for your essay.

By meticulously selecting and refining your essay topic, you set the stage for a compelling and insightful essay. Remember, the journey of writing an engaging essay begins with the first step of choosing the right topic. Embrace the process, and let your curiosity and creativity lead the way.

Renowned Enlightenment philosopher Baron de Montesquieu is most recognized for his significant contributions to political theory, especially the notion of the separation of powers. His 1748 treatise "The Spirit of the Laws" contained an explanation of this concept and served as the foundation for contemporary democratic administration. The authors of the US Constitution were influenced by Montesquieu's theories regarding the allocation of governmental powers, and his ideas are still relevant in today's political discourse. The English Civil War, a seminal event in British history, was not the result of a single cause but rather a complex interplay of political, religious, and social factors that built up over time. However, one event that stands out as a critical catalyst for this conflict was King Charles I's attempt to arrest five members of Parliament in January 1642. This dramatic episode not only symbolized the escalating tensions between the monarchy and Parliament but also set the stage […]

The Principal Author of the Declaration of Independence

Despite the fact that it was written by a group of people, Thomas Jefferson is recognized as having written the majority of the Declaration of Independence, one of the most important documents in American history that signifies the start of the country's independence. Jefferson played a key role in articulating the colonies' complaints against British rule and in laying the theoretical groundwork for the nascent republic. The Continental Congress assigned a group of men, including John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger […]

The Architect of the Stanford Prison Experiment: a Psychological Inquiry

Few experiments in the field of psychology study have provoked as much discussion and thought as the Stanford Prison Experiment. This contentious study, which looked at how people behave when they feel they have authority and power, was carried out in 1971 and was led by Stanford University psychologist Dr. Philip Zimbardo. The experiment's significant ramifications and moral dilemmas are still relevant in psychology and other fields. Born in 1933, Dr. Zimbardo had always been captivated by the dynamics of […]

The Disturbing Portrayal of the Klan in “The Birth of a Nation”

"The Birth of a Nation," directed by D.W. Griffith in 1915, is widely regarded as a seminal work of cinema because of its inventive methods and epic narrative. But its racist overtones and depiction of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) have generated a great deal of controversy and discussion. The Klan is portrayed in the movie as both the heroic defenders of Southern society and as an essential entity that must be in place to defend white civilization against the […]

The Social and Moral Goals of the Temperance Movement

A coalition of religious leaders, social reformers, and concerned citizens saw alcohol as a threat to society's moral fabric and well-being, and together they created the Temperance Movement, which was a significant social and political force in the United States and other parts of the world during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The movement's main objective was to reduce alcohol consumption and ultimately lead to its prohibition. Fundamentally, the Temperance Movement aimed to improve both individual lives and society […]

How “Impressionism” Became the Name of an Art Movement

The term "Impressionism," a label now synonymous with one of the most celebrated movements in art history, has an intriguing origin that reflects both the movement's innovative spirit and the critical reception it initially received. Essay Topic Generator

book notes

What do you do when you know what type of essay you need to write but can’t think of a proper topic? Answer: Come to our Essay Topic Generator and let us create the kind of topics you need to get started.

Need to write a controversial essay? Select that type from the drop down menu and click on the Generate Topic button!

Need to write an argumentative essay? No problem—we’ve got that covered as well!

Need to write a compare and contrast essay but don’t know what to write it about? You’ve come to the right place. Let’s see how it works!

How to Use Essay Topic Generator

Our essay topic generator is simple to use. You start by selecting the type of essay you will be writing. Options include: controversial essay, persuasive essay, personal narrative, and many more.

Once you’ve selected the type of essay you want, just click on the big blue Generate Topics button. Your first result will give you a topic idea followed by a proposed Essay Title.

For example, let’s say you have to write a controversial essay but can’t think of a topic. Select controversial essay from the drop down bar, and click the blue button. The first result you receive might be a topic on gun control. Gun control is a controversial topic in America, right? See how simple it is?

Well, say you don’t want to write on gun control—no problem. Hit that blue button again. You’ll get another result—maybe abortion as a topic. Abortion is a super controversial topic and would be a great subject for a controversial essay. But maybe you don’t want to write on that either. So smash that button again! We have hundreds of topic ideas and we’re sure you’ll find one that strikes your fancy.

Choose Your Essay Type

Essay topics.

Okay—so what? You’ve got a topic. Now you have to explore that topic. What’s that mean? It means you have to get to know the topic and understand it before you can expect to write about it. The topic is basically just a broad field for you play in. But in order to connect with your reader, you need to narrow the field. Think of your topic as a ballpark and connecting with your reader as a series of bases that have to be tagged before you can make it home. The topic tells you which ballpark you’ll be playing in—but you still need to step up to the plate and put the ball in play for your audience to care.

So how do you put the ball in play? That’s where our suggested Essay Title can help. It might strike you as a bunt or, meh, as a single. Or you make get one that strikes you as a double or a triple—or maybe one that even looks a like a homerun. It doesn’t really matter because a title is about putting the ball in play. You’re narrowing the focus and just trying to reach base in most cases. Once you’re on you can think about how to get from first to second or from second to third. The end goal is to make it to home plate. But the title is where it starts. It gets you thinking in the right direction. That’s why we don’t just stop at generating a topic idea for you. We also give you a great title to think about. So keep hitting that blue button and generating more results for yourself until you find one that fits!

From Essay Topic to Essay Title

The  essay topic  gets you in the right ballpark, the essay title lets you put the ball in play, and now you have to round the bases—i.e., write your essay. What are the steps to doing this? How do you go from topic to title to writing? Think about the bases on the base path. What shape do they make if you trace a line from home to first to second to third and back to home plate? They make a diamond shape. That’s why it’s called the baseball diamond. Now consider the writing process as a similar shape that you need to create. You’re creating a diamond for your reader and it is basically a step by step process just like rounding the bases.

Need help coming up with a title? Try our  essay title generator.

First, you need to touch first base. Let’s say first base is where you brainstorm using the title you’ve been provided. For example, if you like the title, “Should Public Schools Allow Teachers to Carry Weapons?” you can brainstorm the pros and cons of teacher carry schools. What would be the benefits of having armed teachers in public schools? What would be the drawbacks? What would be your preference if you were a student in such a school? Jot down your answers to these questions. There! See? Now you’re on first base.

Let’s get you over to second. Reaching second base is about pulling those ideas together and giving them some shape. This is where you want to start creating an outline for your essay. You bring these ideas together and arrange them in a way that makes sense. Your outline should start with an introduction that tells what you’ll be looking at in the essay. Then create a section for each point you want to cover: a section for the pros, a section for the cons, and a section for your personal view. Then follow that up with a conclusion that reiterates your points. There you go—that’s an outline!

Now you have to get to third base. Easy—start writing! Follow your outline to stay in the base paths and before you know it you’ll be rounding third and heading for home. To get to home plate all you need to do is go back and edit your essay!

Additional Title Information

You’ll notice that once you hit that big blue button we don’t just give you a topic and a title. We also give you Additional Info. This is where we provide with some more tips to think about when you got to make your outline. For example, with an essay on gun control, you might want to give both perspectives by arguing for one side and then writing a rebuttal. So pay attention to the Additional Info that we offer because it will help you round those bases.

Our Essay Topic Generator is a great way for anyone with writer’s block to get ideas on a topic. Click on the type of essay you need to write by selecting it from the drop down bar. Then click on the Generate Topics button. We’ll give you a topic that fits the type of essay you’re writing. We’ll also give you an essay title to help you get started with the brainstorming process. Finally, we’ll hit you up with some helpful additional info that you can use to flesh out your outline and round the bases towards writing your essay. Hey—no need to thank us! That’s why we’re here: we know that when it comes to writing, every little bit helps.

How to write the perfect college essay

Writing an essay for college admission is not just about showcasing your knowledge; it’s about telling a story that reflects your identity, aspirations, and the value you can bring to a college community. Whether you’re starting an essay or aiming to conclude an essay , here are steps to ensure your essay stands out:

Understanding the prompt

Before you begin writing, understand the academic writing prompt thoroughly. Make sure you know what the question is asking and how you can address it in a unique way that showcases your strengths and experiences.

Choosing your topic wisely

Select a topic that resonates with you and allows you to share something personal and significant. Know which common college essay topics to avoid, and instead, choose unique college essay topics that allow your personality and voice to shine through.

Crafting a compelling introduction

Your introduction should hook the reader and set the tone for the rest of the essay. Start with an anecdote, a surprising fact, or a thought-provoking question to draw the reader in.

Developing a clear structure

Organize and format your college essay with a clear essay structure , including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph should support the main thesis outline of your essay with evidence and personal reflections.

Showcasing your voice

Your essay should sound like you. Use your own voice and avoid overly formal language. The goal is to make the reader feel as though they are getting to know the real you.

Being honest and reflective

Be honest in your writing and reflect on your experiences. Admissions officers can tell when a student is being genuine versus when they’re saying what they think the college wants to hear.

Proofreading and revising

After you’ve written your essay, take the time to do essay proofreading and edit your essay if necessary. Look for grammatical errors , check for flow, and make sure your essay is clear and concise. It can be helpful to have someone else read your essay to provide feedback. You can also use tools like essay checkers to make your work easier.

Avoiding taboo topics

There are certain college essay topics to avoid, such as those that are overly controversial, inappropriate, or cliché. Choose a topic that is meaningful but also appropriate for a diverse audience.

Some examples of essay topics to avoid include:

1. Grandiose tales of heroism that seem exaggerated or implausible.

2. The story of your achievements without reflection on the journey or challenges.

3. Controversial topics that do not contribute to a positive discourse or understanding.

4. Overly polarizing political or religious topics that may not resonate with the reader.

5. Cliched volunteer experiences that don’t reveal anything unique about you.

Ending with impact

Your conclusion should wrap up your essay without simply summarizing what you’ve already said. End with a reflection on how the topic has shaped you or how you’ve grown from the experience.

Your college essay is more than an assignment; it’s a canvas for your experiences and dreams. Choose a topic that resonates with you, and let your passion shine through your words. And while AI essay writers can provide assistance with the initial stages of drafting, the real magic comes from your personal touch and insights.

To ensure your essay truly stands out, consider the expert editing and proofreading services offered by PaperTrue. Our team can sharpen your narrative, correct any linguistic errors, and enhance your essay’s clarity, allowing your unique voice to captivate the admissions committee. Happy writing!

👉 How to Choose a Persuasive Essay Topic for College?

The main secret of the successful persuasive essay is a compelling topic. Therefore, when choosing the right persuasive topic, follow these few simple pieces of advice:

  • Re-read the assignment . The task that you’ve received from your tutor can be of great assistance. You just have to read it correctly. Unfortunately, college students tend to underestimate the power of the question. Don’t make this mistake. Read your assignment carefully because it can provide clues on the topic to look for.
  • Brainstorm ideas. Before writing any paper, college students have to research. It will ensure the argumentative part of the persuasive essay. To understand what to examine, have an ideation session, and consider a variety of ideas. Picking the most appropriate one, you’ll see where to start your research. Try to find as many topics as you can. Free college essays collection is a good place to check out as a part of your session. You’ll be able to see what topics are already covered, and what you can expand upon. It will make your investigation and writing processes easier!
  • Don’t pick an idea if it’s too broad . You may think that in this case, you’ll have plenty of things to argue about. Well, maybe a bit too many. In your essay, you should cover an entire topic so that it sounds convincing. When the idea is too broad, you can’t fit every argument in one paper. So, specify your title. For instance, you want to persuade your readers to stay healthy. Then don’t investigate all the aspects of maintaining health. Focus on one specific issue. For example, explore the positive influence of sport on the general health condition of a human being.
  • Ensure that you have credible sources. In some colleges, even the smallest essays may require a list of references. Thus, make sure you have materials to research and later list as your sources. Remember: Good persuasive paper topics for college have to offer a wide variety of sources to investigate. So, if you are not confident in your materials, better change the title. It will prevent you from a lack of evidence to support your arguments.
  • Choose a topic of personal interest. We’re not compelling you to write something that you enjoy when it contradicts the assignment. But try to select an idea that doesn’t bore you from reading it out loud. It is always more pleasurable to write on a topic you are passionate about. Don’t miss your chance to make turn your essay writing process into an exciting activity.
  • Select something you have an opinion about, but open to debate. Your tutors can disagree with your position. Nevertheless, it is not a reason to give up. It’s the right time to show your critical thinking skills. State your position clearly and provide convincing arguments to support it. Show your readers that you can change your position if you see some compelling data. It can give you some extra credit. The best persuasion topics for college create an environment for debates and discussions.
  • Be unique! In colleges, the amount of papers done daily is enormous. Don’t make your professors read about the importance of waste sorting, for example, yet again. The topic of environmental protection is undoubtedly extremely significant. However: It is way too overused. The professors are tired of reading essays on the same issues again and again. Surprise them and stand out.

Finding an original topic for a persuasive essay is tricky.

Make sure to demonstrate the effect of the event and your understanding of why namely those events entailed the aforementioned result.

Persuasive Essays

Choosing a topic for essay when writing a persuasive one should be easy. Just think of a thing that you want to persuade somebody of and go into the endless world of writing. Nonetheless, when writing a persuasive piece, remember to infuse it with:

  • Ethos. Credibility & Ethics.
  • Logos. Logic & Reason.
  • Pathos. Emotions & Feelings.

These three points are a must-have in a persuasive text, as only the combination of heart, soul, and mind can bring success in convincing somebody of something.

Argumentative Essays

Many folks might claim that argumentative essays are the same as persuasive ones; yet, there is a slight bit of difference between them. While persuasive essays are written to persuade the audience regarding one particular point, the argumentative ones are there to actually prove that some already researched data is true.

Research Papers Essays

There is nothing hard to understand what a research paper is all about. Regardless of how obvious it might sound, you have to research something and make sure that it is delivered and construed to your readers in a succinct and understandable manner. The table below will help you understand the structure to follow.

  • Introduction
  • Body Part 1 / Problem
  • Body Part 2 / Methodology
  • Body Part 3 / Literature Review
  • Body Part 4 / Discussion
  • List of References

Editorial Essays

Writing editorials is a task for accomplished writers. Yet, if you’re a student, you have to be an accomplished writer and write editorials for your school, college, etc. So, what is an editorial essay? The answer is simple:

  • Often published on the front pages of newspapers, magazines, etc.
  • Might be unsigned, as it presents a common position of a group of people regarding one issue.
  • Infused with opinionated statements.

Introductory Essays

Sometimes, you have to write one text in order to be able to write the next one. Just imagine one essay serving as an introductory part of the next one. Here’s how it looks like:

Introduction Essay (Introduction, Body, Conclusion) -> Analythis, Synthesis, Summary -> Introduction of a New Paper.

Narrative Essays

Essay topics to write about are aplenty when it comes to writing a narrative – you just take a story and start narrating it. The only thing to remember here is that you have to follow a logical turn of events. That is, don’t start telling it from the tail, and don’t mix up everything in the middle.

Graduation Essays

This is one of the most memorable essays that you will ever write in your life. Without a shred of doubt, a graduation paper is all about analyzing an important part of your life, as a graduation essay sums up the fruits you gathered while studying. A graduation essay is also a personal statement you can use when applying for a college. Here are five rules to keep in mind for writing a successful graduation piece:

  • Define your admission offers’ preferences.
  • Keep it strictly personal.
  • Focus on the story of your life and not the history of your college.
  • Talk about the program you’ve chosen and the points of connection with it.
  • Crown it with a strong statement explaining your choice of the school.

Challenge Essays

We’ve all been through some challenges in our lives. Hence, we all have our own special essay topic to dwell upon. Challenge analysis assignments are all about self-analysis that leads to the understanding of oneself.

Literary Analysis Essays

We all study literature. Even if the scope of our research is quite diversified, there are surely some good essay topics to write about when it comes to crafting up a literary analysis essay. The only thing you have to remember when writing a literary analysis is to stick to the topic. Don’t stray away from the particular aspect of the literary work that you have to analyze.

Value Essays

There is nothing easier than writing a value essay. Just write an introduction, and then take it one value a paragraph. Explain your values, summarize them, and here you go – a solid values essay is ready.

Definition Essays

A definition essay is yet another type of a written work when the title speaks for itself. You have to define a term when writing it. Here is a roadmap for you to follow when writing a definition essay.

Choose a term to define and introduce it. – > Use more than one source of information. Stay critical and boost your credibility by citing sources. – > Remember to present the term in the introduction. – > Use your body paragraphs to unfold your idea for an essay. Represent the term from different perspectives. -> Do not forget about including proper examples to simplify the reader’s understanding of the essay topic.

Confirmation Essays

Sometimes, we all want to hear the great news. Confirmation essays or letters are mostly written to let people know that they have been admitted to a college, university, hired for a job, etc. So, when writing a confirmation:

  • Start with a greeting.
  • Justify the choice of this candidate.
  • Explain the steps to follow up in the process of being enrolled/hired.
  • Provide the deadlines for dealing with each of the steps.
  • Congratulate once again.

Experience Essays

Just like challenge essays, you have to share a story when writing an experience essay. Choose one, narrate it, and explain that impact it had on your life. Simple as that.

Story – Narration – Analysis – A+

Proposal Essays

Proposal essays are simple. They follow the general introduction-body-conclusion scheme, yet they are applied in particular situations.

  • When preparing for writing a large research paper;
  • When getting ready for a group project;
  • When preparing for writing a coursework.

All in all, a proposal essay always precedes a huge chunk of writing work that is waiting for you ahead.

Descriptive Essays

A descriptive essay is just like a narrative one, but here, you have to pay more attention to visual details. Make the readers see every detail of the concept, event, or anything else that you are trying to describe.

Describing a Place Essays

This type of essay falls under the same rules as a descriptive essay, yet, here, you have to describe a place in the most beautiful, yet the most understandable of ways possible. Topics for essays describing places are endless, it seems.

The scope of essay writing topics get significantly narrowed down when writing a SHARP essay, as this is a two-pager about Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention. While this is a program that was introduced to deal with such issues within the US Army ranks, it looks like those issues are way far-more-reaching. So, a successful SHARP paper identifies an issue and provides ideas on how leaders must address it.

Let’s Sum Up

As you can see, topics to write about for an essay are quite plentiful. When a professor gives you the freedom of choice, there is always something you can choose from. Yet, choosing an essay writing topic is easier than writing an essay, especially when you have never heard of the type of the work assigned.

Never be afraid of learning from examples and, what is more, never be afraid to ask a professional for help. You might have an idea for essay, but you might need somebody to help you implement it. That’s just the way this world works; there’s always something new to learn and master.

Yes, the examples that StudyCorgi delivers are completely free. Keep in mind, though, that these papers are meant for research purposes only.

Can I submit one of the essays as my own?

Absolutely not. This would be considered academic dishonesty. We’re strictly against it, and won’t support it in any way or form.

Is there a way to get an essay sample on a specific topic? Do you take requests?

We don’t take requests, but our database is quite large. Consider reviewing our selection every once in a while, as we post new essay examples regularly. You might just find what you need.

Can I send you an essay?

Yes, you can. There’s a page on our website you can visit and fill out a form to donate your paper. We’ll review it, and if it fits our requirements, the work will be published shortly.

How do you ensure the quality of these papers?

We have a team of editors who check all the papers that get submitted and make sure they contain a minimum of grammatical, stylistic, and factual errors. They also see whether those essays adhere to a particular citation style.

What topics do your papers cover?

It’s easier to say what topics we do not cover. Our database is huge, with tens of thousands of works, covering almost every study-related topic imaginable - from the simplest essays describing life experiences and points of view, to works on genetic engineering and microbiology.

How do I properly use the examples you provide?

You can use our samples as a source of inspiration or as part of your investigation into a topic. You can utilize the references in each sample as a starting point for your own research. If you want to use information from the essay itself, you should properly cite it in accordance with your citation style requirements. Looking for a reliable company that delivers top-notch work quickly and cost-effectively, look no further than GradeFixers. I was worried I'd get less than stellar results by going with an online paper-writing company. However, when my paper came back with an A+.

Helpful Features! GradesFixer has made a massive difference in my academic performance. I struggled to keep up with my classes, but with the help of GradesFixer, I understood my course material better, and my grades started to improve. Community Essay Examples

When crafting your college applications, writing strong essays is essential. Through your essays, you demonstrate who you are–from your values and passions to your lived experiences. Indeed the personal statement is the most common college essay. However, you will also likely have to write some supplemental essays as part of your college application requirements. One of the most common supplemental essay types is the community essay. This essay type is also known as a describe the community you live in essay, cultural diversity essay, or community service essay.

In this article, we will introduce several community essay examples. Most importantly, we’ll describe why they are considered college essays that worked. Specifically, we will share community essay examples from the two schools:

  • Princeton University
  • Columbia University

By studying these admissions essay samples, you can see what makes these college community essay examples strong and apply those same principles to your writing.

Reviewing Types of College Essays

Each school has different supplemental essay prompts for their college application requirements. However, there are a few types of essays that are most common. By becoming familiar with these essay types, you can begin to brainstorm and strategize what you will write about early on. You might start as early as sophomore or junior year in high school.

Now, let’s take a look at the most common supplementary essay questions.

Common Supplementary Essay Questions

1. why school.

A Why School essay is, as it sounds, about why you wish to attend a specific institution. The key to answering this prompt well is to be specific. You should identify examples of what you like about a school. Avoid general comments such as “it is a top school” or “it is diverse.” Share specific programs, professors, teaching approaches, cultural elements, or unique opportunities such as research or study abroad.

2. Why Major

The Why Major essay asks you to share specific reasons behind your choice of major and how it relates to your future goals. A strong response to a Why Major essay will highlight your specific motivations. But it will also connect those motivations to a school’s unique opportunities. For example, perhaps you wish to be a pre-law history major, and the school you are applying to offers law-related internships. By highlighting these specific connections, you draw a compelling connection between yourself and the school.

3. Extracurricular Activity

Many schools ask you to describe an extracurricular activity that is particularly meaningful for you. When responding to this question, do not feel limited to only talk about the most popular extracurricular activities for college applications, like clubs or sports. Consider all of the activities you do outside of school. Then choose the one that is most meaningful to you. Also, give specific examples of how you grew or made an impact within your extracurricular activities for college.

4. Community Essay

The Community Essay can have slightly different angles to it. But, the uniting factor is that the school wants to know how you engage with others around you. Some types of community essays are a describe the community you live in essay or a cultural diversity essay. In recent years, the cultural diversity essay has been a more common college application requirement.

Coming up, we will share a bit more about how to break down community essay prompts. We’ll also take a look at college essays that worked. By reading these examples, you’ll know how to approach these common prompts.

How to identify a community essay?

While community essays can have slightly different focuses, they all share the goal of learning about where you come from. A supplemental essay prompt might ask you to share more about your background via a group you are part of. This is likely a community essay. Indeed, a community essay can also be called a describe the community you live in essay, or a cultural diversity essay. Other college community essay examples focus on how you will contribute to a college campus. Finally, in a describe a community you belong to essay example, you will see that students highlight any community that is meaningful to them.

You may be wondering why so many colleges have community essays as a college application requirement. For one, many colleges use a holistic admissions process. This means they care about all aspects of who you are, not simply your grades and test scores. How you engage with your communities shows them your character and values. For example, a describe the community you live in essay example about visiting church every Sunday demonstrates your commitment to religion. Similarly, a cultural diversity essay helps colleges learn more about your cultural background.

Additionally, colleges want to learn more about how you will engage with their on-campus community. You’ll notice this important factor in the college community essay examples we will share. To some degree, how you have engaged with previous communities can be an indicator of how you will show up on their campus.

How is a community essay different?

As we mentioned, community essays can have slightly different focuses. Some prompts ask you to write a describe the community you live in essay. These types of community essays are more like cultural diversity essays.

Keep in mind that the word “community” can have many different meanings. A community can be your school, church, or neighborhood. It could also stem from your interests. For example, your dance or robotics team can form your community.

Some community essay prompts want to know specifically how you help strengthen your communities. These types of essays are considered a community service essay. Another term for community service is “civic engagement.” An example of civic engagement might be getting people in your cultural community to sign up to vote. Or, another could be helping with church fundraisers to ensure that your local community has the resources it needs to thrive.

In sum, the keywords you might see in a community essay prompt are “civic engagement,” “community service,” “serve your community,” “contribute to your community,” or “diversity.” No matter how it’s phrased, your essay should demonstrate the impact you’ve had on your community–whichever one you choose to highlight.

What are some examples of community essays?

In this article, we will share several community essay examples. Specifically, we will highlight Princeton essay examples and Columbia essays examples. Let’s look at these two colleges’ essay prompts.

The first Princeton supplemental essay prompt is a part of our college community essay examples and our cultural diversity essay examples. Here is the prompt:

Princeton Community Essay Prompt #1: Cultural Diversity Essay and College Community Essay Examples

Princeton values community and encourages students, faculty, staff and leadership to engage in respectful conversations that can expand their perspectives and challenge their ideas and beliefs. as a prospective member of this community, reflect on how your lived experiences will impact the conversations you will have in the classroom, the dining hall or other campus spaces. what lessons have you learned in life thus far what will your classmates learn from you in short, how has your lived experience shaped you  (please respond in 500 words or fewer.).

In this cultural diversity essay prompt, Princeton wants to know about your lived experiences. By this, they refer to any experiences that have shaped you profoundly. A lived experience can be a specific event, such as experiencing a car crash or winning an award. Or, it could be a set of experiences that resulted from life circumstances, such as being a first-generation college student or having taken a gap year .

This essay prompt will also lead to college community essay examples. Indeed Princeton wants to read about your lived experiences and how they impacted you. But, they also want to know how you will bring those lessons to the Princeton community, should you enroll . Also, note that this prompt mentions challenging ideas and beliefs via conversation. As you respond, look for ways to highlight how you have engaged in fruitful dialogue and how you would do so at Princeton.

To answer this prompt effectively, share specific examples. Additionally, be sure to answer all parts of the prompt.

Princeton has a second supplemental essay prompt that focuses on how you engage with your community outside of the classroom. The prompt is as follows:

Princeton Community Essay Prompt #2: Civic Engagement

Princeton has a longstanding commitment to understanding our responsibility to society through service and civic engagement. how does your own story intersect with these ideals (250 words or fewer) .

To answer this prompt well, you must highlight specific examples of how you have positively impacted your community. As a starting point, consider which of your communities you have most engaged with. How have you done so and what results did you have?

The Columbia Community Essay Prompt is another of our college community essay examples. It is a cultural diversity essay, as well. Here is the prompt:

Columbia Community Essay Prompt: A Cultural Diversity Essay

A hallmark of the columbia experience is being able to learn and thrive in an equitable and inclusive community with a wide range of perspectives. tell us about an aspect of your own perspective, viewpoint or lived experience that is important to you, and describe how it has shaped the way you would learn from and contribute to columbia’s diverse and collaborative community. (150 words or fewer).

While this prompt is similar to Princeton’s, it also references perspectives and viewpoints. In doing so, the prompt opens you up to share opinions or values that are important to you. You might consider highlighting values in your family or community that you either hold close or disagree with.

Note that Columbia also highlights the word “collaborative” in this prompt. This indicates that your cultural diversity essay should also show how you collaborate with others.

Which schools require a community essay?

In addition to Princeton and Columbia, many other schools have community essays as part of their college application requirements. Here are some other examples of community essay prompts:

In this UNC-Chapel Hill prompt , you must describe a specific example of how you made an impact on a community. The prompt reads:

The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill: A Community Service Essay Prompt

Discuss one of your personal qualities and share a story, anecdote, or memory of how it helped you make a positive impact on a community. this could be your current community or another community you have engaged. (250-word limit).

In responding, be sure to highlight what community you are referencing, the specific impact you made, and what personal quality helped you do so.

This prompt from UMichigan is a describe a community you belong to essay example, as well as a cultural diversity essay:

The University of Michigan: Describe a Community You Belong to Essay Example

Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it. (required for all applicants. 1,500 character limit.).

In addition to describing the community, make sure to share how you engage with it and what it has taught you. Remember that community is a broad term. So, for this prompt you can respond with any type of community in mind, whether physical or cultural. In contrast to the describe the community you live in essay, you do not have to be geographically close to the community you describe here.

Duke University: Cultural Diversity Essay Prompts

Duke offers students five supplemental prompts to choose from, of which they can reply to two. Of these supplemental prompts, four are examples of cultural diversity essays:

1. We believe a wide range of viewpoints, beliefs, and lived experiences are essential to maintaining Duke as a vibrant and meaningful living and learning community. Feel free to share with us anything in this context that might help us better understand you and what you might bring to our community.

2. we believe there is benefit in sharing or questioning our beliefs or values; who do you agree with on the big important things, or who do you have your most interesting disagreements with what are you agreeing or disagreeing about, 3. duke’s commitment to inclusion and belonging includes sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. feel free to share with us more about how your identity in this context has meaning for you as an individual or as a member of a community., 4. we recognize that not fully “fitting in” a community or place can sometimes be difficult. duke values the effort, resilience, and independence that may require. feel free to share with us circumstances where something about you is different and how that’s influenced your experiences or identity..

Each of these prompts is a slightly different type of cultural diversity essay, from sharing a range of opinions to not fitting in within a community. Choose the essay prompts that most resonate with you. And share specific examples that bring your cultural diversity essay to life.

In this Yale University supplemental prompt , you must choose a community that you feel connected to and describe why it is meaningful. Here’s the prompt:

Yale University: Describe a Community You Belong to Essay Example

Reflect on your membership in a community to which you feel connected. why is this community meaningful to you you may define community however you like. (400-word limit).

When responding, be sure to highlight what you have learned or how you have grown from this community. In contrast to a describe the community you live in essay, this essay can be about any community, near or far, that resonates with you. Indeed, the prompt gives you plenty of leeway in what you consider community.

When responding to the UC system prompts , you must choose four of the eight available personal insight questions. One of the PIQs is a community service essay prompt:

The University of California Personal Insight Question: A Community Service Prompt

What have you done to make your school or your community a better place, things to consider: think of community as a term that can encompass a group, team or a place like your high school, hometown or home. you can define community as you see fit, just make sure you talk about your role in that community. was there a problem that you wanted to fix in your community, why were you inspired to act what did you learn from your effort how did your actions benefit others, the wider community or both did you work alone or with others to initiate change in your community.

Similar to many of the other prompts, when answering this question, be sure to identify the specific impact you made on your community.

Now that we have looked at various examples of community essay prompts, we can explore community essay examples. Reading essay examples is a great way to get inspired to write your own college essays.

In each of the highlighted college essays that worked, note what the author did expertly. Rather than trying to copy their responses, topics, or ideas, consider how you can apply those same skills to your writing.

Princeton Community Essay Examples

In this section, we will highlight Princeton essay examples that respond to their two community essay prompts: a cultural diversity essay and a community service essay.

The first of our Princeton essay examples responds to the following Princeton prompt:

Princeton Essay Examples #1: Cultural Diversity Essay

Now, let’s take a look at a student’s response to this prompt focusing on lived experiences.

Princeton Essay Examples #1 Student Response

I have spent most of my life living in a 41% minority town of 1.8 square miles called Highland Park, NJ. This typically overlooked town has introduced me to a diverse array of people, and it has been the main influence on my life experiences and core values.

In the face of distinct cultures and customs, we forge a single identity as Highland Parkers and come together to organize large community events. The most prevalent example is our highly touted annual Memorial Day parade, where we join together with neighboring New Brunswick to invite military service members, family members of our fallen war heroes, our legislative and congressional representatives, and our townspeople. Moreover, as our high school band’s vice president, I help organize and lead our ensemble into these performances with a positive and uplifting spirit. We communicate with the town government and arrange the performances every year to perform at the parade. The parade is an example of many of our large community events that serve as a unifying force for our diverse community, reminding us that we are fundamentally connected as one cohesive group, despite our differences.

As someone deeply interested in historical and political matters, I am well aware of the consequences that arise from dictatorial protocols that limit the freedom of speech and diversity of voices. From my experiences debating in Model UN conferences, I have grown accustomed to being able to present viewpoints from both sides of the argument, and I have learned to incorporate and respect the viewpoints of all sides of an issue before making up my own mind. For example, in a Model Congress debate, I found myself advocating for the interests of a state heavily reliant on traditional fossil fuels. While researching and articulating that perspective, I gained insights into the economic challenges faced by the states that are reliant on these resources. This experience not only broadened my understanding of the complexities surrounding environmental policies but also highlighted the necessity of considering diverse viewpoints for comprehensive decision-making.

My background and experiences have fostered in me a profound appreciation for the value of diversity, inclusivity, and the pursuit of knowledge. At Princeton University, I will seek to contribute as an active participant in the community, actively provide unique perspectives and insights, and respect and learn from others’ perspectives even if there are disagreements. I wish to partake in student government, which has like-minded peers who want to make a substantive impact, and also participate in service programs like the Civic Leadership Council. Also, I hope to increase my impact from the leadership positions I currently hold on the Red Cross club and teen mayoral advisory council using the platforms in Princeton. I look forward to making a positive impact on both the campus and the broader community.

Why This Cultural Diversity Essay Worked

In the first of our Princeton essay examples, the student successfully responds to all parts of the Princeton prompt. They begin by describing their community and sharing some details about its makeup. Indeed, the first sentence hooks the reader–it is unique and compelling.

Then, the student illustrates how they specifically contribute to their community each year by leading the high school band in the Memorial Day parade. They also highlight how their experience in Model UN shaped their appreciation for diverse perspectives. In sharing these two examples, the student demonstrates their leadership and open-minded thinking. Finally, the student ends by highlighting how they would use these values to contribute to Princeton’s community– by partaking in student government and Civic Leadership Council, among other activities.

In the second of our Princeton essay examples, the student responds to the second Princeton prompt which is:

Princeton Essay Examples #2: A Community Service Essay

Princeton has a longstanding commitment to understanding our responsibility to society through service and civic engagement. how does your own story intersect with these ideals (250 words or fewer).

And, here is a student’s response:

Princeton Essay Examples #2 Student Response

My first experience with the Red Cross was when my older sister was desperately trying to recruit people to join the club during the harsh COVID year. Things were so bad for the club that I, as a freshman, ran for the position of treasurer unopposed. My first blood drive experience was marked by masks, social distancing, and low turnout among blood donors. Even many donors who showed up ended up being turned away due to health-related issues. Needless to say, it was not the greatest first high school service experience, and I admittedly started to doubt if the time I spent on this front was worth it.

However, as we returned in person, things quickly turned around. As the vice president of the club, I helped recruit more than twice the club membership compared to the previous year, and our blood drives started to regain momentum; our blood targets have been exceeded every time since. Organizing and participating in blood drives has become a passion. It’s fulfilling, especially when I personally donate, to know that I’m actively serving the community and saving lives. I have realized that, despite my relatively young age, I am capable of making an impact through public service. I plan to continue my commitment to the Red Cross’s adult program and participate in service programs like Community Action at Princeton to serve the Princeton community and abroad.

Why This Essay Worked

In this admissions essay sample, we learn about a student’s volunteerism with the Red Cross as an example of civic engagement. This essay works for several reasons. First, it provides a specific example of the student’s civic engagement and demonstrates their impact by becoming vice president and increasing membership. Secondly, the essay provides an honest take on the struggles of this service experience, which lends credibility and authenticity to the story.

The student also demonstrates an important lesson learned. This aligns with Princeton’s values– that students can have a positive impact on society.

Columbia University Essay Examples

In this section, we will highlight Columbia essays examples that landed students admission to the prestigious Ivy League university. The first of our Columbia essays examples is written by the same student who responded to the first Princeton prompt above. Here’s a reminder of the Columbia prompt:

As you read the example below, notice how the student edited their Princeton cultural diversity essay to meet the prompt and lower word count for Columbia:

I have spent most of my life living in a 41% minority town called Highland Park, NJ. This typically overlooked town has introduced me to a diverse array of people, and it has been the main influence on my life experiences and core values.

HP has convinced me that we can build institutions that are strong and united while embracing a wide variety of voices and perspectives. It has shaped my core values of diversity and inclusion. An English teacher used to encourage me to talk in front of the class by saying even if I believed my thoughts were “dumb,” I could only enrich the conversation.

At Columbia University, I will seek to continue my contributions as an active participant in the community and look to actively provide unique perspectives and insights. Actively engaging in student groups such as ColumbiaVotes will be a big part of my experience.

The Columbia essay prompt only allows for a 150-word response. This could pose a challenge for many students. What makes this essay among the Columbia essays examples that worked is how succinctly it completely answers the prompt.

The response begins by hooking the reader with a relevant detail of the student’s community. Then, the student shares how this community shaped them by influencing their values of diversity and inclusion. Finally, the student shares how they would engage with a Columbia organization that also supports diverse viewpoints. Though short and sweet, this response clearly answers all parts of the Columbia prompt.

More Community Essay Examples

The final of our community essay examples is a community service essay. Let’s look at how student framed their service experience:

“I don’t believe that’s the best way to do this.”

The moment I thought this the first time I volunteered at my local soup kitchen was one that resulted in a drastic change. When I was informed of the way the food was being served to the public, the initial excitement that I had felt diminished. We were told that the plates would be served before anyone arrived and would remain in an area where people could pick it up and seat themselves. I felt that this method was impersonal and inconsiderate, and disappointment washed over me.

I turned to the people that were around me and discovered that they shared the same disapproval I felt. When we agreed that a change must be made, we exchanged ideas on how to present this to the woman in charge of the program. I suggested that we should serve each person one-by-one, and only give them the food if they wanted to/could eat it. They suggested multiple ideas, including that we should offer to seat them, hold their plates for them, continue to check in on them, and dispose of their plates once they finish their meal. We believed that this way would genuinely make them feel better and would allow us to get to know some of them personally. A simple smile and conversation could be enough to improve their day.

From this day on, the way in which the local soup kitchen serves our community has changed dramatically. This experience taught me the importance of speaking up for what you believe in. In a group setting, it is likely that there will be others who share the same end goal and are willing to contribute different ideas to achieve the goal. These different perspectives can allow you to see situations in ways that you previously hadn’t, and can result in better outcomes. It also showed me the importance of leadership.

If I had never spoken up about the way the food was being served, a change might have never happened. When you work in the group, the end goal may not be for the benefit of anyone in the group, but for others who are in need. This experience also showed me the beauty in doing good for others and making others happy, even through small things such as serving them food to their liking.

In this community service essay, the student shares their experience volunteering at a soup kitchen. Volunteering at a soup kitchen is not necessarily unique in the list of extracurricular activities for college applications. However, the student highlights several aspects of the experience that make it meaningful to them.

To start, the student shares their experience challenging the way that food was served. The student suggested that food be served directly to attendees in order to better connect with community members. Through this experience, the student learns about leadership and working with others to achieve a common goal. This specific example demonstrates the student’s collaborative values and compassionate way of thinking, both of which are great attributes to highlight in college applications.

How To Write A Community Essay

As we saw in the community essay examples, there are several hallmarks of college essays that worked. To write a good community essay, whether it be a community service essay, a cultural diversity essay, or a describe the community you live in essay, you must start by understanding the prompt. Once you have carefully read through the prompt, brainstorm examples from your own life that relate to it. Sharing specific details and examples will make your response stronger and more unique.

Additionally, showcase how you grew throughout your response. In each of the community essay examples we shared, the student discussed a skill or perspective they developed through their experiences. Finally, connect your response to the school you are applying to. If you are writing a cultural diversity essay, for example, demonstrate how you would contribute to the cultural diversity at that school, both inside the classroom and in your extracurricular activities for college.

Topics To Avoid In Your Community Essay

When writing community essays, there is technically no topic that you cannot discuss. However, how you discuss certain topics is important.

For example, in a community service essay, it is important to not come off as a savior of a community with less privilege than yourself. Similarly, if you are writing a describe the community you live in essay or a cultural diversity essay, you will want to avoid stereotyping any community. Speaking from your own personal experience as a member of a community is fine. However, generalizing your experience to the community at large can come across as insensitive to that community’s diversity. To avoid these pitfalls, have a variety of people read your community essay examples and look for these dynamics.

Additional Tips for Community Essays

We’ve highlighted the strengths in the community essay examples above. Now we will now share some more tips for making your community essays a strong part of your college applications:

Tips for Writing Community Essays

1. research the college.

When reviewing our college community essay examples, you will notice that students highlight specific clubs, programs, or groups on campus to which they will contribute. If you are specific, you demonstrate real interest in the school which adds strength to your college applications.

2. Tell a story

In each of the college essays that worked, students gave details that told a full story . This story incorporated where they come from and what they learned through their experiences. Rather than telling us who they were, the students used this particular story to show us.

As the college admissions landscape gets ever more competitive, students are sometimes tempted to read other students’ essays and copy ideas. Or, more recently, they may even want to use artificial intelligence to write their essays. However, AI and other students’ experiences won’t show admissions who you really are. Don’t worry about whether you have the best extracurricular activities for college or the most unique cultural diversity essay. Instead, talk about the experiences that truly matter to you. By being honest, you are more likely to come across as convincing and interesting. In each of our college community essay examples, students presented a true and well-thought-out response to the prompts.

How to Write a Topic Sentence? (Examples & Tips)

A topic sentence is an  important component of every well-structured paragraph . It introduces the main idea and sets the tone for the rest of the paragraph that follows.

Additionally, it is mandatory to structure introductory and supporting paragraphs for every kind of nonfiction writing, including ; essays, theses, blogs, articles, etc. So, perfecting the skill of writing strong topic sentences can be helpful to uplift your writing to the next level.

In this comprehensive blog post, we’re going to discuss useful tips and examples for writing a topic sentence.

What is a Topic Sentence?

A topic sentence refers to the first sentence of a paragraph that reflects its main points . The purpose of this sentence is to tell the readers about what information they are going to read in the rest of the paragraph. It usually comes at the start of a paragraph, though it can also be placed elsewhere.

A topic sentence is also known as;

  • Introductory sentence.
  • Focus sentence.
  • Opening sentence.

This introductory/topic sentence tells the readers that the paragraph is about the health benefits of doing regular exercise.

Tips to Write a Strong Topic Sentence

Here are some useful tips to help you craft compelling topic/introductory sentences;

1. Determine the Main Idea

As aforementioned a topic sentence is solely focused on the main idea or key point of the paragraph. So, before you begin to write the focus sentence, there’s a need to identify the main idea first.

Useful Tips:

Below are some tips to help you determine the main idea of a paragraph;

  • You should brainstorm the key points of a paragraph for which you’re going to craft the opening sentence. To do so, it would be helpful to jot down all the key details.
  • Now, we suggest creating an outline to logically organize these points.
  • Finally, narrow down to the specific idea that you think could enclose the essence of your paragraph.

, the focus/main idea might be that .

2. Start With a Hook

Let’s make your topic sentence compelling. For this, the next tip is to begin the opening sentence with a hook. By hook , we refer to the compelling/interesting statement that grabs the attention of readers.

Types of Hooks that You Can Include in A Topic Sentence:

Some commonly used hook types are lisG

ed below with examples for each;

  • A hook line can be a surprising fact or impressive data , like; "Did you know that just 6 minutes of reading a day can cut your stress levels by up to 68%?”
  • You can use a stimulating question as a hook statement, such as; " How can a simple , regular practice elevate your creative writing to the next level?”
  • You can address a solved mystery in the hook line; for example; “ What ultimately convinced the senator to change their mind?”
  • Also, you can use an anecdote or quote in the hook line, for instance; " Author Stephen King once said, 'Books are a uniquely portable magic.'"

3 . Write Something New and Interesting

Include something interesting and attention-grabbing in the introductory sentence. Avoid using statements that are obvious that everyone knows. So, to craft a topic sentence, write information in a new and unique way.

Tip: Avoid casual and unnecessary words or phrases, but you are required to use compelling, interesting, powerful, and trendy terms to draw readers in.

4. Balance Between Specific & General

Ensure that your main sentence strikes a good balance between the specific/narrow and the general/broad. Don’t write the topic sentence around too broad or vague an idea that is impossible to cover in a single paragraph.

Similarly, you shouldn’t write a too narrow statement that has nothing much to say in the supporting sentences.

Instead , you should maintain a good balance and write an idea that is neither too generic nor too specific. Below is an example of such a topic sentence;

✔️ “Incorporating technology into classroom learning can enhance student engagement and understanding without overwhelming traditional teaching methods.”

Pro Tip: Also, choose a particular writing style/tone of your paragraph in the sentence; Persuasive, Informative, Descriptive, Formal, etc . You should choose this according to the overall writing style of your content.

5. Write Concise and Clear

Another effective tip that can help you write a good topic sentence is to use concise and clear wording. You should write a sentence that is succinct and to the point. Also, it should convey the main idea clearly without any jargon, complexity, or unnecessary details.

All in all, you should aim for brevity and maintain a smooth flow in your paragraph.

For Examples:

Error-free and Innovative Way to Write a Topic Sentence

Following all the above tips are sufficient to help you write a good topic sentence. However, it may consume a lot of your time and effort, especially when you’re compiling them for long-form content with several paragraphs.

Call for Applications: The 2024 Essay Competition on the topic “Digitalization of Armed Conflicts”

  • Republic of Moldova
  • Learning and teaching IHL
  • New technologies and warfare
  • Cyber and information operations

The International Committee of the Red Cross in the Republic of Moldova (ICRC) is proud to announce an essay competition on the theme Digitalization of Armed Conflicts . The competition seeks to spotlight that, applied in the spirit in which they were designed to protect and function, the Geneva Conventions can rise to the modern challenges of today’s armed conflicts.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, a moment of recommitment towards IHL. The Geneva Conventions were adopted in 1949 and are now universally ratified. They represent a universal acknowledgement that war needs rules to limit its devastating impact. In an often-divided world, when parties respect the law, lives are saved, humanitarian actors are enabled to provide aid to affected populations and the principle of humanity is upheld.

At the same time, new challenges such as cyber warfare have become reality in contemporary armed conflicts. We, therefore, encourage students to approach the topic from various perspectives, such as: What are the ethical challenges of using cyber operations in warfare? How can technology be used responsibly in armed conflicts so as to ensure civilian safety? How can the global community work together to reduce the risks of cyber warfare? How does international humanitarian law protect humanitarian workers from cyber warfare? How can media reporting on military cyber operations help raise awareness about civilian risks during armed conflicts? These are examples, and participants are welcome to choose one of these questions or explore other related topics in their essays.

In today’s world, that is increasingly polarized and where international commitments are being challenged, the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law embody universal humanitarian values that preserve lives and dignity. What the world needs more than ever is a more robust adherence to the Geneva Conventions. This is where the students of today - the future generations of professionals - step in. We at the ICRC support the students in exploring, engaging and debating with the ethical and humanitarian issues arising from armed conflict so that they are able to play their role of re-affirming the enduring relevance of IHL, the deep-rooted respect for human dignity, both in peacetime and in the midst of armed conflict. Doris El Doueihy, Head of Delegation, ICRC, Chisinau

To participate, students must submit their essays along with a copy of their identification and proof of enrollment in a university programme (undergraduate or masters). These documents must be received by the ICRC Chisinau Delegation no later than 31 October 2024 at 23:59 . Submissions can be sent by email to [email protected] or by mail to Bulgara Str. 23, MD-2001, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. Participation in the competition is individual, collective work is not accepted. Essays can be written in Romanian, Russian or English. Winners will be informed in the last week of November 2024 and invited for an awards ceremony scheduled for early December.

The winning entries will be selected by a panel of IHL experts chosen by the ICRC. Participants will be assessed on their logical arguments, the depth to which they develop their answers, structure and demonstrated knowledge of the subject matter.

The winners will be notified by the end of November 2024 and invited to an awards ceremony.

The 1 st prize essay:  an internship at the ICRC in Chisinau ;

The 2 nd prize essay:  a day spent at the ICRC in Chisinau and attendance of an ICRC event on IHL ;

The 3 rd prize essay:  ICRC IHL publications

Certificates of participation will be provided for all submissions that are not disqualified.

The Drivers of Post-Pandemic Inflation

Post-covid inflation was predominantly driven by unexpectedly strong demand forces, not only in the United States, but also in the Euro Area. In comparison, the inflationary impact of adverse supply shocks was less pronounced, even though these shocks significantly constrained economic activity. With output already weakened by these unfavourable supply conditions, any attempt by the European Central Bank to further mitigate the demand-driven inflationary pressures---to maintain inflation near its 2-percent target---would have severely hampered an already anaemic recovery.

Smoking ban in pub gardens and outdoor venues being considered due to 'huge burden' on NHS, Starmer says

The government had already pledged to resurrect Rishi Sunak's flagship smoking ban, which was shelved before the election. But Sir Keir Starmer's government could now go further.

A ban on smoking in pub gardens and other outdoor venues is being considered because of the "huge burden" smoking puts on the NHS and the taxpayer, Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed.

The prime minister said ministers were looking at banning smoking in other places too, including outdoor restaurants and outside sports venues, hospitals, nightclubs and in some small parks.

Sir Keir confirmed the proposal on Thursday following a leaked report seen by The Sun newspaper.

He said: "My starting point on this is to remind everyone that over 80,000 people lose their lives every year to smoking, that's a preventable death, it's a huge burden on the NHS and of course on the taxpayer.

Smoking ban in pub gardens and outdoor venues being considered

"So, yes we are going to take decisions in this space. More details will be revealed but this is a preventable cause of deaths and we've got to take the action to reduce the burden on the NHS and reduce the burden on the taxpayer."

The plan has been welcomed by health campaigners who believe the measure would help protect people from the dangers of second-hand smoke.

But the proposal has drawn heavy criticism from others, with accusations of the government imposing on people's freedoms and being the "final nail in the coffin" of the hospitality industry.

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, said: "This raises the critical question: Are we on the brink of becoming a nanny state? What is next?

"While these measures may rightly be driven by public health considerations, they risk dividing opinion and imposing yet another regulatory burden on businesses already facing considerable challenges.

"At a time when our industry desperately needs the freedom to trade, the last thing we need is further barriers."

Mr Kill said many of the 6.4 million people who smoke in the UK "enjoy doing so in social settings like beer gardens".

"We must question whether such an approach is truly in the public interest, or whether it risks over-regulation at the cost of personal freedom and business viability," he added.

Kate Nicholls, chief executive of UK Hospitality, said a ban could cause "serious economic harm to hospitality venues" as she cited the "significant" number of pub closures after smoking was banned indoors in 2007 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 2006 in Scotland.

She said it would also affect hotels, cafes and restaurants and called on the government to talk to the hospitality industry before any laws are passed.

"It must also assess whether such a ban would achieve its aims of meaningfully reducing smoking or simply relocate smoking elsewhere, such as in the home," she added.

A number of Conservative MPs also spoke out against the plan, despite their own plans to curb smoking for younger people, with shadow health secretary Victoria Atkins posting on X: "We want to protect our children from taking up smoking and vaping. Our smoke-free generation legislation was designed to do that.

"Stopping adults from smoking in the open air, however, was not part of our plans. Labour is putting our hospitality sector at risk in the process."

Reform leader Nigel Farage also told one newspaper he would "never go to the pub again if outdoor smoking was banned".

But the chief executive of Action on Smoking Health (ASH) Deborah Arnott said: "The priority is to get the bill back in parliament and put on the statute book, to end smoking for the next generation and curb youth vaping.

"ASH would support the inclusion of powers to extend smoke-free laws outdoors, subject to consultation."

"However, it's also important to ensure that there are still outdoor areas where people who smoke can smoke in the open air, rather than inside their homes."

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: "We do not comment on leaks.

"Smoking claims 80,000 lives a year, puts huge pressure on our NHS, and costs taxpayers billions.

"We are determined to protect children and non-smokers from the harms of second-hand smoking.

"We're considering a range of measures to finally make Britain smoke-free."

A smoking ban inside of pubs and other enclosed public spaces and work places was brought in by Labour in 2007.

According to ASH, in the year after the new law was imposed, there was a 2.4% reduction in hospital admissions for heart attacks and a 12.3% reduction in hospital admissions for childhood asthma.

This Labour government has previously said it would resurrect Rishi Sunak's flagship smoking ban , which was shelved before the election.

The King's speech at July's opening of Parliament promised to reintroduce the legislation to increase the age at which people can buy cigarettes progressively.

Under the proposed smoking ban, a 14-year-old today will never legally be able to buy a cigarette.

In the speech, Labour also laid out plans to impose limits on the sale and marketing of vapes.

My Son and Gus Walz Deserve a Champion Like Tim Walz

The Walz family at the Democratic National Convention.

By Tina Brown

Ms. Brown is the author, most recently, of “The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor — the Truth and the Turmoil."

The sight at the Democratic convention on Wednesday night of Tim Walz’s 17-year-old son leaping to his feet, with streaming eyes, a hand to his chest with a cry of “That’s my Dad” was heart piercing.

As the mother of Georgie, a 38-year-old on the spectrum who still lives with me, I recognized him immediately as one of “ours,” a sweet, unfiltered, slightly bewildered-looking young man who wasn’t quite sure what was expected of him in this epic moment of political adulation.

Gus Walz has, according to his parents, a nonverbal learning disorder, A.D.H.D. and an anxiety disorder, all of which they regard not as a setback but as his “secret power,” that makes him “brilliant” and “hyperaware.”

I know exactly what they mean. One of the joys of my life in the social churn of New York is living with a son whose inability to read the room makes him incapable of telling anything but the truth. Once, as my husband, Harry Evans, and I left a pretentious social gathering in the Hamptons, Georgie told the host sunnily: “Thank you very much. No one spoke to me really, so it was a very boring evening. The food was OK. I doubt I will come again.”

“I have never been prouder of you in my life!” shouted my husband in the car. How many times have all of us wanted to say that as we gushed about the fabulous time we just hadn’t had? Then there was the moment he went up to Anna Wintour at one of my book parties and asked if she was Camilla Parker Bowles. And the time at the intake meeting for a supported work program, when the therapist asked Georgie, “Has anyone ever molested you?” “Unfortunately not,” he replied. Georgie teaches me every day how much we depend on social lies to make the world go round. His sister — his forever best friend — and I feel so lucky to have him in our lives. So did his dad, who died in 2020.

And yet for people who are different and have no support, the world can be bleak. Their loneliness can be agonizing. Some people assume the school days are the hardest, but it’s the years after that are the social desert. Having a friendly, forgiving workplace to go to is critical. It’s often their only taste of community and what makes them such reliable and rewarding employees. The work from home movement has been a killer for people with special needs, often depriving them of the only social connections they have.
