The PhD is normally a three-year course of full-time study, culminating in a thesis of no more than 80,000 words, based on original research on a focused topic. It is also possible to pursue the degree part-time over five years.

The Faculty of Divinity is one of the largest centres for theological research in the UK. There are 22 University Teaching Officers, covering six core areas: Christian Theology, History of Christianity, New Testament, Old Testament, Philosophy of Religion and Religious Studies. Information about academics and subject areas can be found under ' People ' and ' Subjects ' on the main site menu.

The Faculty's research environment is internationally respected and admired, supporting a balance of individual research initiatives and larger-scale collaborations. It provides an ideal setting, rigorous and supportive, for research to flourish. It has close links with external research institutions, including the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities ( CRASSH ), Tyndale House , the  Von Hügel Institute , and members of the Cambridge Theological Federation , including research centres such as the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide , the Faraday Institute , and the Woolf Institute .

The faculty’s research culture is focused around a range of senior seminars , which meet regularly during term time. Here, academics from Cambridge and elsewhere read and discuss papers. There are nine senior seminars, covering the six subject areas listed above, plus Hebrew, Jewish and Early Christian Studies, Patristics and World Christianity.

Alongside these seminars there is also a wide range of informal reading groups. A  list of reading groups  can be found under the 'Research' section of the main menu. The faculty also has a number of endowed lectures which see leading academics visiting the faculty.

The University has exceptional research collections. The nearby  University Library  (UL) has more than eight million print items and numerous unique archives. The colleges each have their own collections and archives, often housing manuscripts of national and international importance. The library of  Tyndale House  contains a collection of relating to contemporary Biblical Studies of international renown.

Study for a PhD involves working closely with an individual supervisor. Prospective students should consult the list of University Teaching Officers . Some members of the wider academic community in theology at Cambridge also supervise PhDs.

Information about all postgraduate degrees of the University of Cambridge can be found via the postgraduate admissions page  of the Graduate Admissions Office, the central body which deals with all graduate applications for the whole University. The set of pages on the PhD in Theology and Religious Studies is here .

In advance of your application, you must contact a potential supervisor regarding your potential dissertation.

You should submit your application to the Postgraduate Admissions Office following the guidance on that admissions page.

All applicants must submit a  research proposal  of around 1,000 words and a  sample of written work . Written work should total no more than 12,000 words.  Click here for advice on writing a research proposal.

Applicants for the PhD will usually have completed a master's degree in theology or religious studies (such as the Faculty's own MPhil ), or one with a substantial theological component. Where a candidate is transferring into theology or religious studies from a different discipline, the Advanced Diploma and/or the MPhil, may be a necessary preparation for further postgraduate work.  You should raise the question of whether you are adequately prepared for the research you wish to undertake with a Faculty member in your chosen area of study.

CHRISTOLOGY: DIVINITY AND HUMANITY OF CHRIST

Profile image of Jean-Marie Sumo, PhD

Abstract Since the time of the early church and centuries thereafter, Christian theology in general has always acknowledged the authority of Scripture. However, despite this general acknowledgment, there have been several antagonisms as far as theological understanding and interpretation of the Scriptures are concerned, especially those concerning the attributes of God the Son, Jesus Christ. In this paper, I will treat the theological understanding of Christology, how we apprehend the simultaneous human and divine natures of Jesus, in conversation with selected scholars of our time, because of the very broad interest theologians have manifested toward the subject of Christology. I will therefore focus on Christ's divinity and humanity in one person. I have also found that it would be relevant to lay emphasis, by detailing on the divine attributes and the Trinity, Jesus Christ being the second person of the Trinity. My choice of Christology comes from the fact that developing a Christology apology from the Scriptures rightly divided, should demonstrate the centrality of Jesus Christ in all Christian theological reflection, He being the source of light and the savior of humanity. This is the reason it is important for me to seek to answer the fundamental question that has been heard since the time the first Apostles went out to spread the good news of the kingdom of God. Because of the existence of many skeptical, even of some limited believers, the pertinent question "Who is Jesus" deserves more attention than ever before, at a time when biblical confusion has invaded humanity’s thoughts. The need for clarification on this area of Christology is as significant as to even hear the disciples who walked with Jesus asked: “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:41)

Much debate has centered on the pre-existence of Jesus Christ throughout church history that the argument has caused much division. The argument itself is even multi-faceted. The whole argument centers on Jesus’ existence before he became human as the Second Person of the Trinity. Scripture not only clearly teaches that Christ existed prior to his humanity, but also implies the pre-existence of Christ throughout the Gospel accounts and Epistles.

It is the purpose of this paper to suggest a revision of the Wesleyan doctrine of sanctification along trinitarian lines. Wesleyan thought has tended to polarize toward one or other of two positions - placing a stress either on the Christological or on the Pneumatological aspects of sanctifying grace. In part this has been a historical question. Attempts have been made to establish the position of John Wesley in regard to the use of "pentecostal" and "pneumatological" language in reference to entire sanctification. But it has also involved the very real task of keeping the doctrine alive among the Wesleyan people, saving it from the fate of becoming a mere historical curiosity. An attempt may be made to demonstrate the basic compatibility of these competing historical views when applied to the task of constructive theology, though this is not the task I wish to attempt here. Whatever may turn out to be the case regarding the appropriateness or otherwise of pneumatological language in reference to sanctification when historically considered, the current resurgence of interest in trinitarian theology may provide us with a means of overcoming this polarisation, and also of advancing the tradition in a constructive manner. The basic thesis which this paper will test is that a trinitarian revisioning of the Wesleyan doctrine of entire sanctification can provide us with a future for this doctrine, and help us to overcome tritheistic tendencies in its current formulation.

I intend to look into two sections of CD IV/1 and another from CD IV/2 that Barth affirms the non-assumptus and to put it in the context of these sections. I will argue that despite Barth's pastoral and ethical concerns for the affirmation of the non-assumptus, there are some problems that the doctrine of the fallen human flesh and the sinlessness of Christ pose for the hypostatic union. These problems are further articulated in his doctrine of the Communicatio Gratiarum in which the communication of graces to the human nature as discussed by Barth, may divide the natures and thereby suggest an implicit Nestorianism. I am not saying that Karl Barth was Nestorian, but that maybe his doctrine of the Communicatio Gratiarum, used to protect the Son from sin, may have unintentionally separated the natures. This study will progress in four steps. First, I will explain Barth's understanding of the self-humiliation of the Son in light of the event of Jesus Christ's solidarity with us. Second, I will discuss the issue of sinlessness and the antecedent life of the Son as it relates to the fallen state of Christ and the grace of God in the incarnation. Third, I will evaluate those proposals in light of Karl Barth's doctrine of the Communicatio Gratiarum. Finally, with the aid of Thomas Aquinas's categories of Grace of Union and Habitual Grace, I will propose a mild corrective to Barth's doctrine of the non-assumptus and impeccability based on a few perceived missteps in Barth's formulation.

177 Theology Research Paper Topics for College Students

theology research paper topics

Theology is the study of the spiritual, the divine, and religious beliefs. Studied in colleges and universities, theology explores the human faith and reveals what it means to have a balanced look at religion as a whole. The purpose is to learn more about a religious tradition and not just find religious topics to write about. Theology can be biblical, systematic, historical, and practical. Biblical theology involves the use and interpretation of the Bible. Systematic theology explains theology as a comprehensive unit. Historical theology probes the past to inform the future. Practical theology establishes a certain truth as an act of practice. Yet, theology can also be political, seeing how religions continue to shape political decisions. In short, theology can be many things. So, in this article, we provide different topics on theology, from practical to political. But before you dive in, quickly check how to outline a theological research paper.

Brief Theology Research Paper Outline

From ideation to paper, writing a theology paper has never been easy. However, it’s also not exactly difficult. If you want to know how to write a theology paper, you’ll need not just the will to write it but also tips and outlines. Here we have provided tips for clear theological writing. Read on.

  • Introduce The first attempt at writing a theology research paper is to introduce your topic. Of course, you can’t clarify what your reader does not know about. Often, you are tempted to assume your readers have prior knowledge but do not fall into that trap. Always think your reader is dealing with a new topic so you can better introduce the topic.
  • Use headings Headings make your paper appealing and straightforward. Good titles make your professor smile and ensure a better grade. If you don’t know how to go about your headers, check the style guide. Also, be mindful of headings that do not capture the content.
  • Keep a good topic sentence A topic sentence highlights your main idea. Usually at the beginning of a paragraph, it informs your reader what to know about the section. Without a good topic sentence, your paper might be lost.
  • Research The body of your paper contains the outcome of your research. Your study must be detailed and concise. If you make a claim, you have to prove it. Do not just research and write, thinking your reader will fathom what you are saying. Do your research in sync with your sources.
  • Conclude Your conclusion should capture your thesis. A very good conclusion does not leave anything in the body of your thesis out, especially the important parts. Your topic sentences should also inform your conclusion.
  • Use sources It’s impossible to write a paper filled with your opinions only. No doubt, you’ll source views from others and incorporate them into your study. Whatever the opinions and wherever you source them, you should reference them correctly.

Now that you’re familiar with the process of outlining a theology research paper, find below exciting theology topics to choose from for a successful theology thesis.

Hidden Debt Revelations

How reliable are public debt statistics? This paper quantifies the magnitude, characteristics, and timing of hidden debt by tracking ex post data revisions across a comprehensive new database of more than 50 vintages of World Bank debt statistics. In a sample of debt data covering 146 countries and 53 years, the paper establishes three new stylized facts: (i) debt statistics are systematically under-reported; (ii) hidden debt accumulates in boom years and tends to be revealed in bad times, often during IMF programs and sovereign defaults; and (iii) in debt restructurings, higher hidden debt is associated with larger creditor losses. The novel data is used to numerically discipline a quantitative sovereign debt model with hidden debt accumulation and an endogenous monitoring decision that triggers revelations. Model simulations show that hidden debt has adverse effects on default risk, debt-carrying capacity and asset prices and is therefore welfare detrimental.
