3535266 - Understanding the handling of Material Document Numbers.

The purpose of this Knowledge Base Article (KBA) is to provide comprehensive information pertaining to the functionality and key aspects of Material Document Numbers within SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition. 

Environment

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition 

• Number ranges interval settings can be reset once a new fiscal year has started. Details are described in SSCUI 103896.
• Material Document Numbers are drawn from intervals based the semantic Physical Inventory Posting, Material documents for goods movements and inventory differences, Material documents for goods receipts (see SSCUI 103896)
• Material Documents cannot be changed or deleted in SAP. They can only be archived.  See online help .  Details on how to correct the material document posting is described here .
• The impact on stock changes is only determined by the Posting Date in UTC of the material document.
• Material documents can only be posted in 2 active periods, which are controlled by Fiori App Close Period (MMPV) or Close Period for Product Master (F4619).
• The CreatedOn timestamp of the material document indicates when a posting has been created in the system in UTC (for Example see Fiori App F1077 Material Documents Overview).
• Currently the Material Document Numbers are retrieved in blocks from a central number provider (Number range object) and are consumed by each posting instance separately. This may also contribute to the fact that the numbering does not reflect the sequence of postings (in addition to the boundary conditions mentioned above).

Note: A material document is immutable which means it can only be archived but cannot be deleted nor adjusted after posting. The system supports however a correction of a posted goods movement by offering a reversal function via app Material Documents Overview (F1077).
